time by. the sound of fresh starts february 7th on t.w. . this is deja vu news live from berlin a deadly corona virus that's raising global concerns reaches germany the virus has now spread to more than a dozen countries in china where originated more than 100 people have died some 450 have been infected. and witnessing so the
7:01 am
world will never forget 75 years after the liberation of the auschwitz death camp the last survivors warned that despite the past 20 semitism is on the rise again. and basketball star kobe bryant inspired people around the world with his talent and with his vision investigators are now piecing together what caused a helicopter crash that killed him and 7 others. i'm brian thomas great to have you with us this morning well global concerns over china's deadly coronavirus are mounting as more cases are a dent to fight abroad germany has now confirmed its 1st case of the virus a man living in bavaria has been placed in isolation more than a dozen other countries are also reporting infections in china the death toll is
7:02 am
now surpassed 100 and travel bans and urban lockdowns have brought life for millions to a complete standstill. the love and support that's most needed in china right now the news popping up on their phones is mostly too worrying so of the scenes in some cities and the virus at peace and to war hun checkpoints everywhere with a lockdown in place streets of completely emptied out if you're a woman then me and you when we face a new type of virus of which a lot is still unknown. a lot of people may feel anxious when. psychologists have been deployed in hospitals to treat patients. and experts are there to instruct people on how to protect themselves and you can meld an ecosystem here on her own or her going phone call beijing says it has the situation under

control images released by the state media show that supermarkets have sufficient supplies and prices are stable but some dismissed those images as propaganda if this student from thailand in holland has such a different experience it's very difficult to find out if you want to buy it right now because this is a shortage everyone wants. but it's already too late you know it's very very base of the recession washing it well your shirt well jacket one. jacket 3 layers and a red mask and a regular doodle. trapped at home some people have followed an online call chanting hum do your best from there windowless. small gestures to lift people's spirits like this light show in one flashing words of encouragement everyone here is waiting and hoping that life in the city can soon
7:04 am
return to normal. let's get the very latest now with our correspondent mathias berlinger joining us from beijing good morning to you i'm a ts can you bring us up to date on date on what authorities are doing to get this epidemic in check yeah the authorities have gone from 0 practically 0 response to everything they can throw in within one week now as we have seen one and almost the entire province is locked and everywhere people are warned not to go out as you can see here behind me this is a fever clinic some people are queuing up there but it's not a lot i think here in beijing the number of cases is not that high yet but people feel very uncertain about what that means the number of infected cases the or fishel number is now 4500 that might not sound like a lot for
7:05 am
a country of 1400000000 people but it is double of what it was yesterday and we still do not know whether this numbers are accurate at all we have lots of reports that people have not been reported by oath or at least deaths have not been reported and people have been quickly buried without registering them as linked to this epidemic all of this is very hard to very fine but people are very anxious now and one woman i just spoke to told me that she sings that the citizens are probably better prepared for this epidemic then the government and they are now doing everything to avoid contact with other people to stay at home ok staying at home is one form of advice the government's giving beijing the government's also come out and told citizens to delay all travel abroad what's behind that what is
7:06 am
the directive exactly. well it's the same same that is behind. the locking down of the at the center of this epidemic the government things the less people travel the less that their disease can spread but what we know is that this comes did all these measures they came after the new year's holiday the busiest travel season in china had already started and on sunday the mail for one said just prior to the lockdown 5000000 people had left this city so what is needed now and this is what experts criticize is a lot of transparency is to identify cases as soon as possible because the people have already traveled they are ready out and the government is now trying to identify people who have traveled to 100 before trying to lock them down some people have been placed under house arrest after their travel we don't know how
7:07 am
systematic this is but it looks a lot like a panic reaction that is going on with the latest for us from beijing thanks very much for now well as we've heard there despite the quarantines in the travel bans china's put in place in factions from the virus continue to spread all scientists and pharmaceutical companies are racing to find a way to curb the coronavirus lessons learned from the sars epidemic that was nearly 2 decades ago may help them develop a vaccine china has begun testing in nature i.v. drug to fight the new corona virus that is spreading rapidly the medication known as aloof. prevents the virus from reproducing in effect slowing down the spread of the infection chinese health authorities requested the drug according to a spokeswoman for us from a company at the. scientists around the world are racing to develop
7:08 am
a vaccine against the disease chinese researchers were able to quickly identify and share the genetic sequence of the new corona virus allowing scientific research teams to get to work right away they hope to build on the dot and research get that curing to 2003 outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome all sauce the disease is also caused by a form of the koran or virus the research teams are pursuing several different approaches with global health agencies hoping at least one treatment will be ready for human trials within a few month. the new virus is not as deadly as most all sauce but scientists fear it could mutate into an even deadlier and more contagious variant. ok so how possible is that for more we're joined by fabienne schmidt from our science desk good morning fog and the latest numbers from china are causing
7:09 am
a lot of concern today almost a doubling of the number of cases in one day is the spread of this virus increasing in speed and reach. it's certainly is increasing in speed and reach because the virus is highly contagious there war some question about whether it really is contagious already during the beijing period which means before people scholz symptoms whether that is true or not it's clear that many people who are sick are staying home which also probably means that when we're talking about a force on $500.00 people have been infected this is probably a far too low figure because those people are staying home who are not that severely sick but still have serious symptoms but are healthy otherwise will probably never be registered and. there's a lot of focus right now on the development of a vaccine to deal with this how promising is that how long that process take.
7:10 am
the point is that basically there was never in history a case in which a vaccine had so much promise to be developed in such a short time we're now talking about 3 months american and chinese researchers hope that basically they will be able since the gene sequencing took place already to be able to develop a vaccine was in 3 months and already go into human testing then by summer it could be on the market the question that really is there is will the epidemic or if it turns to become a pandemic which it might. be is this going to last that long or is the vaccine going to hit the market when it's basically already too late now that brings us to the 2nd question we already heard in the report about h i.v. drugs that could be used to curb the virus that's the one hope that this is going to make the process
7:11 am
a little milder the 2nd one as an ebola drug that some researchers also consider as a potential cure for the virus which means if you have an infection already it makes the process a little bit smoother and your recovery fausta ok so a number of options out there thanks very much for that obviously from our science desk. if you break down some of the other stories making the news today new zealand's prime minister is an ardent is called a general election for september to grab global attention for her response to a terror attack last year but she's taken a hit in the polls as the country's economy struggles. lebanon's farland has passed a budget to address its massive debt and the hopes of protesters who blame politicians for widespread corruption and mismanagement demonstrators vowed to continue protesting until the parliament's brought down. u.s.
7:12 am
prosecutors say britain's prince andrew has been dodging their request for help in the case of the late sex offender geoffrey epstein the british royal had promised to assist investigation into epstein's alleged sex trafficking of minors and of multiple charges of sexual assault against epstein and his associates. well the last survivors of auschwitz have been gathering at the nazi concentration camp and what was once occupied poland now their numbers are growing ever fewer but many have returned there to bear witness that were joined by world leaders to mark 75 years and auschwitz was liberated by soviet troops in january of 1905 the final months of world war 2. reliving the horrors of aushev it. the agony
7:13 am
etched over his face. and yet despite the pain these holocaust survivors have returned to this film and death camp to remind the wold where anti semitism and racism can lead. in front of the gates of auschwitz known as the gates of death a commemoration ceremony in which delegates from $61.00 countries are taking part and $200.00 auschwitz survivors each with that terrible memories of what happened here i remember she was there to make it to women's trucks from the barracks to a guest chamber i can hear. screaming i can hear it in my
7:14 am
subconscious when i remember the infamous you know you. elsa baker who's blind was 8 when she arrived at auschwitz she was one of the 23000 sinti and roma people to put it here it isn't it for me to to be here and monks so many people who have suffered so blatantly perhaps even much more so than oh i and. i. i think. if you. don't know. it i'm upset. but in spite of the past anti semitism is on the rise again in 2020. we hear the same lies the nazis used so effectively in their propaganda they said
7:15 am
jews have too much power to control the economy and the media jews control governments jews control everything we have this madness online in the media and even within democratic governments. these brave men and women know the cost of anti semitism they can't they get. it already seems that too many listening put on. for more of this i'm joined now by john barrack who fall disharmonious for us yesterday john good morning to you the ceremony in auschwitz is very much about the last survivors as many of them left and what message were they bringing from auschwitz. i think it was clear that all of them were very aware of the fact that this may well be the last
7:16 am
the last time they go to our shifts to commemorate the liberation and there was a cut a particular poignancy in the in their message i think that it is the eternal message of. never again. but it was addressed i felt even if not always explicitly it was addressed particularly to young people we've seen a rise of anti-semitism across europe and north america in recent years which is quite horrifying and there is there was a sense not of this in a strange enough or of or of anger but an appeal an appeal for people to make more just society and to reject things like anti semitism and genuine the message very much directed at young people what do ordinary germans know today about auschwitz 75 years on well this is this is also warring aspects because in the 1960 s. the young generation of the time confronted their parents and grandparents about
7:17 am
what they had done during the 2nd world war and there was a popular cross roots movement in germany to find out what had been done to accept responsibility for the for the shoah the genocide of the jews. that with time has as weakened because inevitably it's 75 years ago and a lot of young people in germany are less interested as indeed across the world are less interested in what happened in the 2nd world war like there's an ongoing reconciliation between israel and germany for what happens only 5 years ago after monday's armani israel's president returned to berlin with the german president what's on their agenda today well today the israeli president is going to visit a school in germany and he's going to talk in a panel discussion with with high school students at the jewish high school at that if the sides also what i'm saying the emphasis is very much on on the young people it's young people who have to have to take the the the initiative ready to come to

combat anti semitism in society and tomorrow israeli president will address the german bundestag the parliament of the in a plenary session and he will do so. which is particularly poignant i think would have horrified nazis he will address the german parliament in hebrew ok john thanks so much will have more on that of course tomorrow john burke following this for a story thanks very much. well spoken at length to auschwitz survivors who risked their lives to help victims and you can find these videos at our website e.w. dot com as well as facebook and our fitter and instagram tweets in other news u.s. president donald trump says his plans to resolve the israeli palestinian conflict is ready and that will be unveiled today the president welcomed israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu and opposition leader benny gantz to the white house to disclose the details of his many's peace plan. but that plan has already been

rejected by palestinian authorities who say they were not included in its creation . the jordan valley in the occupied west bank the area running along the jordan river bordering jordan is to teach equally important for both israelis and palestinians the fertile areas home to israeli settlements palestinian villages and many farms. at this israeli pepper farm you version is waiting to hear more about president trump's way forward. lots of things that we don't need anyone to lay out a peace plan having said that we trust president trump and prime minister netanyahu that they will strike a good deal. expectations are particularly high among israeli officials that the term plan could lead to the annexation of the jordan valley area that
7:20 am
means it would officially become part of the state of israel as prime minister binyamin netanyahu promised during the last election campaign. i think it's a historic and dramatic moment for the state of israel. the adoption of israeli law in the jordan valley and the dead sea will give security personal security to the residents of the coastal plain and the people of israel. for decades israeli politicians have demanded that the jordan valley remain with israel as a security buffer as it eastern border with jordan today it's already controlled by israel as a result of the oslo peace accords 1993 this particular area makes up about a quarter of the west bank israeli say they cannot give up on the jordan valley 1st for teaching reasons palestinians say there cannot be a palestinian state without the jordan valley. in the palestinian village of

our people are waiting to hear what the trump plan actually entail it's the leadership in ramallah of us not consulted because it has cut diplomatic relations with the trump ministration. well he doesn't have the right he owns his own country that he can give to israel to britain to france to germany but he doesn't have the right to just hand out land that isn't his it's not the property of his father that he can just hand out. skepticism also prevents among palestinians in east jerusalem the part of the city palestinians would like to see as the capital in a few to state in 2017 trump recognized to roost as the capital of israel many palestinians have no hope that his plan will take their interests into account. this deal brings fear it's a humiliation because since 948 we've trying to establish our presence but we're just humiliated and we don't have any say in any decision making and. you have to

stop that that this deal of the century is being imposed on us anything that's imposed doesn't invite peace it invites war why because i as a human i ask for peace and you impose on me peace in your way so you are saying to me no the phrase i mean to the let. people are counting down the time of. the term plan one thing is certain there's a cause for the tensions in the region. well in the u.s. the national basketball association has postponed the los angeles lakers tuesday night game as a sign of respect for superstar kobe bryant bryant died on sunday in a helicopter crash authorities are now looking into why flight clearance was granted in spite of bad flying conditions his death of 41 has triggered an outpouring of grief worldwide. he was one of the superstars of the national basketball association playing for the los angeles lakers for his entire
