hoping that trump will give it the green light to annex the jordan river valley a move sure to spark conflict with the palestinians and. backyard. gloves on may have a new government but the protesters who've brought down the old one haven't gone away we will find out what it is that they want now. i'm sara kelly welcome to the program it may be the 1st person to person infection of coronavirus outside of asia and it is here in germany officials say that a man contracted the virus from a chinese colleague at a conference of their confirmed cases of the viral outbreak in europe have so far involved patients who have recently been to china here's why. this is where the 1st
5:02 pm
person in germany confirmed both corona virus was infected it was at a company training event here in the southern state of bavaria a week ago a chinese colleague attended it but after her return to shanghai she tested positive for the virus. according to local health authorities a german colleague then started showing flu like symptoms at the weekend. to. test was carried and yesterday evening the results came back positive for the. people who are the patient is now being monitored in hospital doctors say he is awake responsive and without a fever also and he's have said further protective measures have been put in place its people it's in kentucky with women the focus now is on the people who were in contact with the chinese women who live on the people who had contact with the infected or german especially close contacts when talk health officials say the man

is in an isolation room and is doing well. and let's get more now we are joined by dr john epstein he is a disease ecologist in new york and the vice president for science and outreach at eco health alliance welcome to the program john and thank you so much for joining us to share your expertise how prepared are developed industrial countries like germany for example at the united states where you are currently to deal with outbreaks of such diseases. i think generally speaking industrialized countries are are pretty well prepared and pretty well resourced to deal with epidemics like this the public health infrastructure specifically in germany is excellent and this is evidenced by the early detection of this single case there was evidence of transmission between person to person and that case was isolated identified and is being watched and contacts of that person are being watched as well this is exactly the right approach and i also know from personal experience i have colleagues in
5:04 pm
germany there are excellent hospitals and laboratory facilities in germany in fact the diagnostic test was supported through development by a scientist in germany so i think it's going to be fine and the important thing is to be able to detect cases early and isolate them ok you mentioned early detection you mentioned identifying isolating what more can be done to prevent the virus from from spreading. well what we know about coronaviruses useful in particular is spread through respiratory excretion certain rochlitz when you cough or sneeze allow it to spread from one person to another so the important thing is for people who are sick and suspected of potentially being exposed to this virus perhaps to travel to china should stay home not go to work not going to public places people should be vigilant about hand washing and yes masks can help but it should really be considered a last liar to say that sitting here and washing and social distancing from people who go with this virus are the most important things ok john you're actually going
5:05 pm
to stick around with us to talk a little about another aspect of the story but 1st we're going to find out because other than germany more than a dozen countries have confirmed cases of the virus in china the death toll has jumped to 100 with more than $4500.00 cases confirmed scientific studies suggest that each infected person passes the virus on to 2 or 3 other people on average entire city is already under quarantine and now the government has asked people to delay foreign travel for millions worrying and waiting is the new normal. the love and support that's most needed in china right now the news popping up on the phone service mostly too worrying so of the scenes in some cities and the virus at peace and to woo hon checkpoints everywhere with a lockdown in place streets of completely emptied out to see a woman for me and. when we face a new type of virus of which

a lot is still unknown. a lot of people may feel anxious when. psychologists have been deployed in hospitals to treat patients yet high level and experts are there to instruct people on how to protect themselves and then melton commission here on her own all good info beijing says it has to situation under control images released by the state media show that supermarkets have sufficient supplies and prices are stable but some dismissed those images as propaganda this student from thailand in holland has such a different experience it's very difficult to find out if you want to buy it right now because this is a shortage everyone wants. but it's already too late you know it's very hard quartz regs are reversed said watching it while your shirt well jacket one. jacket

3 layers and a red mask and a regular doodles. trapped at home some people have followed an online call chanting who hum do your best from their windowless. small gestures to lift people's spirits like this light show in one flashing words of encouragement everyone here is waiting and hoping that life in the city can soon return to normal let's get back now to disease ecologist john epstein who is still standing by for us in new york dan what is it about the corona virus that's making it spread so quickly. well coronaviruses as we mentioned earlier spread through respiratory excretion so coughing and sneezing and like any respiratory disease those tend to be the most easily transmissible people are in public places they cough they're infected they're setting virus into the environment and lots of people can get exposed at once given thing that's added to this we're still
5:08 pm
learning a lot as a spiral epidemic on full is how usually the spreads from person to person has a lot to do both with the virus itself and the population that are exposed to it's we're watching to see how quickly and easily this spreads we're also learning about the full spectrum of how severe this viral disease can be from mild or even asymptomatic cases all the way to severe cases and when people can be infected without showing signs of sickness and still spread the virus that makes it particularly difficult to control and mirth so trying to determine if that's the case with this virus let's talk a little bit more about controlling it i mean how soon do you think an effective vaccine could be developed. there are back in development and the challenge with vaccines it's not going to be an immediate tool that's available so in the short term we really have to rely on the for a traditional means of control which is awareness early diagnosis surveillance and isolation of cases to really limit spread but there is an organization the
5:09 pm
coalition for epidemic preparedness and innovations are stepping that is dedicated to helping support the development of vaccines including one for coronaviruses they put about 50000000 dollars out to 3 different groups may say that they could have a vaccine development ready for trials this really is 16 weeks so there is one coming and we will probably see it used in this epidemic but how effective it will be remains to be seen so these ecologist dr john epstein joining us from new york thank you so much and you. well spreading almost as rapidly as the coronavirus itself is false information about it peter bell the dog joins us now with more on that so i mean we have these incorrect claims spreading on social media what are they well we're seeing a pattern that on fortune's become all too familiar in situations like these were seen no false and misleading information this kind of sprinkle with conspiracy theories they're being spread to tens of thousands not millions of people on social
5:10 pm
media. it's to sow confusion and to foment fear and cement hatriot really one example is you know the chinese eating habits that have been blamed for the outbreak the chinese as you may know in some parts of the country in particular are known to eat wild animals and so when it was reported that the virus may have come from bats videos like these started circulating they falsely claim that the outbreak started because people who hunt back now there are several things wrong with this batsuit is not a thing. these videos are in fact from the pacific island nation of palauan where bats she was considered a delicacy. chinese scientists believe that the virus came from bats but they made no connection to 2 soup this particular kind of soup and what may be most troubling is really that what these videos are doing is they're perpetuating this racist stereotype. that's especially in the western world still pretty widespread that because they different things are somehow dirty and so if they carry this virus
5:11 pm
it's basically their own fault and but are there examples are there well one example is or one claim is just that things are much worse we see these also quite often so really blowing up the numbers hundreds of thousands dead millions infected obviously we know at least right now is not true. one claim of particular that's picked up steam has been fueled by the popular you tube conspiracy theorist jordan savoring that sweet that he posted last week he called the coronavirus a quote fat. and then went on to note that a patent had been filed in 2015 for the corona virus it is true that a patent was found in 2015 but it was for a different strain of corona virus and it wasn't it was you know filed to try to develop a vaccine. to to combat this avian corona virus that's not what we're looking at here presumably also it's important remember the corona virus is not one disease it's a family of viruses including sars so despite these claims being patently
5:12 pm
false we're seeing them spread by tens of thousands particularly the socal and to doctor so people who believe that vaccines are somehow bad for your health. they're picking up on this on this conspiracy theory to say well it's the government that's behind it they created the virus to basically as a plot to force people to get vaccinated. it's part of a broader pattern that is to sow mistrust in government very government not a lot of people right now rely on to for news and for information about how to deal with the situation often these false claims are surprising successful what can people do to protect themselves against misinformation like this well one basic just don't trust everything you see online that is true always a not just in this situation several health ministries we're seeing have really stepped up and are being very active in debunking these false information so australia malaysia singapore the u.s. . tech giants facebook twitter you tube are trying to kind of stem the flow
5:13 pm
of false news they're trying to guide users to more reliable sources of information at the end of the day though i think there's really emphasizes again that the a lot of you know of this false information is still making it through and so these social media platforms or many rely on for news. they can really situation like that help make health care even scarier. thank you thank you much. let's take a quick look now at some other stories making news around the world in syria tens of thousands are fleeing intensified fighting in the northwestern province of idlib they're heading for the turkish border with russian backing government forces have increased their attacks on the jihadist groups that control the region. the british government has confirmed that it will allow chinese telecom conglomerate huawei to have a role in building 5 g. networks in the u.k. the u.s. had pressured the u.k.
5:14 pm
to block huawei on security grounds. israel's attorney general has officially indicted prime minister benjamin netanyahu on corruption charges it comes after netanyahu dropped a last ditch attempt to gain immunity in parliament the decision to charge the prime minister paves the way for a trial during the run up to elections on the 2nd of march. israel has announced that it is strengthening its forces of the jordan valley part of the occupied west bank ahead of the unveiling of u.s. president donald trump's middle east peace plan israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is in washington along with opposition leader benny gantz where they have been meeting with president trump he's expected to unveil his peace plan shortly while details of trump's proposals have so far remained a secret there's been speculation that it could give israel the go ahead to annex the jordan valley a move that analysts say is sure to fan the conflict with the palestinians.
5:15 pm
the jordan valley in the occupied west bank the area running along the jordan river bordering jordan is to teach equally important for both israelis and palestinians the fertile areas home to israeli settlements palestinian villages and many farms. at this israeli pepper farm you version is waiting to hear more about president trump's way forward. lots of things that don't need any one delay on a peace plan having said that we trust president trump and prime minister netanyahu that they will strike a good deal. expectations are particularly high among israeli officials that the trump plan could lead to the an extension of the jordan valley area that means it would officially become part of the state of israel as prime minister benjamin netanyahu promised during the last election campaign. i think it's a historic and dramatic moment for the state of israel. the adoption of israeli law
5:16 pm
in the jordan valley and the dead sea will give security personal security to the residents of the coastal plain and the people of israel. for decades israeli politicians have demanded that the jordan valley remain with israel as a security buffer as it eastern border with jordan this particular area makes up about a quarter of the west bank israeli say they cannot give up on the jordan valley 1st for teaching reasons palestinians say there cannot be a palestinian state without the jordan valley. in the palestinian village of battle our people are waiting to hear what the trump plan actually entail it's the leadership in ramallah of us not consulted because it has cut diplomatic relations with the trump ministration where he doesn't have the right he owns his own country that he can give to israel to britain to france to germany but he doesn't have the

right to just hand out land that isn't his it's not the property of his father that he can just hand out. skepticism also prevents among palestinians in east jerusalem the part of the city palestinians would like to see as their capital in a future state in 2017 trump recognized as the capital of israel many palestinians have no hope that his plan will take their interests into account myself this deal brings fear it's a humiliation because since 948 we've trying to establish our presence but we're just humiliated and we don't have any say in any decision making. you have to support that this deal of the century is being imposed on us anything that's imposed doesn't invite peace and invites war why because i as a human i ask for peace and you impose on me peace and your way so you are saying to me no the phrase i mean the little. people are counting down the time of.
5:18 pm
the trump plan one thing is all but certain that is the cause for the tensions in the region. let's get more now we are joined by correspondent tiny kramer in jerusalem tanya it must be said that there have already been quite strong reactions we saw some of them there in your piece to this unannounced peace plan tell us a little bit more about what you've been hearing. well i think 1st of all people do not really used this term peace plan especially not among palestinians palestinians have the sense that this is not going to be in their favor that their interests their narrative and their rights and not being taken into account given the actions taken by the term back ministrations administration in the last 2 or 3 years or so which was well seen in the favor of the israeli position and as you heard and the reports the israeli and the palestinian leadership has not been consulted they had
5:19 pm
cut off diplomatic relations after the trump decision on jerusalem so we understand there is an emergency meeting of the palestinian leadership tonight in ramallah about the same time that the plan is expected to be released at significant in a way that all the political factions and bite it also hamas given this bitter division between hamas who's ruling fatah stimulating and the west bank having said that also in israel there have been some reactions already especially among the writing the settler community and they have been saying that they couldn't agree to a plan that even mentions to notion of the establishment of a palestinian state there's been much speculation about what might actually be in this trungpa plan tanya what more do we know. yes he said a lot of speculation also a lot of unconfirmed leaks many in the israeli media catering
5:20 pm
a bit to the right wing voters of prime minister netanyahu saying it's more in favor of israel we have to wait and see in a short time we'll know more what he will be looking at is the paramita is that this plan or deal is being based on you know will it be based on the notion of 2 states with 2 peoples something that the international community has been lacking but then has an absolute case to buy and if the trump strange didn't at all how for example a palestinian state if it all will be defined you know it's about the borders and especially also about the status of 2 so them the question of refugees so all of these topics hopefully no more. time tanya kramer interest one thank you tanya. and we'll have live coverage of president trump his announcement of the details of that plan expected and about an hour from now but 1st we had to brazil where at least $54.00 people have died in floods and landslides caused by

accusations of corruption but the demonstrations are just as angry as the new government which at the new government excuse me which they accuse of keeping the same old elites in power well our reporter traveled to beirut where she spoke with one young protester who is fed up with politics as usual. was. that joe has been protesting on the streets of lebanon since october 17th. for her this is personal. when they weren't in my home and this is part of the why i remember the stuff between my school and university because i couldn't because it's so expensive this is part of the why i remember electricity being of a minute being capable of turning on the heat and when i was in my family this is right there when. she's not the only one failing economy white spread

lebanon sectarian system which protesters say hinders reform and fosters corruption isn't as simple as changing a government. the country has 18 officially recognized religious groups and they all have to somehow participate in government. parliament seats are divided among most of these groups even the 3 highest political offices are allocated based on religion the quota basis jim has roots in lebanon's history and was reinforced following the country's civil war and there are some like lawmakers alone the disagree with protesters and still see a need for the system. for their needs of course you know these are diversified societies and you need a minimum of safeguards to ensure everyone that they are being able to to get the
