this is d.w. news live from berlin a mideast peace plan without the palestinians the u.s. president unveiling the plan alongside the israeli prime minister in washington it would hand israel control of more disputed territory one reason the palestinians have projected it out of that. also coming up there are now 4 cases of the coronavirus here in germany authorities and the various say those in fact that are all from the same company probably call it from a visiting chinese colleague to talk about that and the international evacuation

plans for foreign nationals and move on. and hong kong restricts travel from mainland china in a bid to keep the virus at bay there is another blow to a city already troubled by monks trust. i'm brian thomas a very warm welcome to our program u.s. president donald trump has unveiled his long awaited peace plan for the middle east at the white house israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu describing the proposal as quote the deal of the century but palestinian president mahmoud abbas has already denounced the plan which calls for a palestinian state with a capital in east jerusalem which also grants israel control of disputed land.
7:02 am
president trump and prime minister netanyahu pushing their international peace plan but they've both got troubles at home impeachment hearings against trump a continuing in the senate and on tuesday next and you know he was formally charged with bribery and fraud but there was no mention of either of those scandals at the white house under this vision jerusalem will remain in israel's undivided very important undivided capital. but that's no big deal because i've already done that for you right. we've already done that but that's ok for too long far too long the very heart of the land of israel where our patriarchs prayed our prophets preached and our kings ruled has been outrageously branded as illegally occupied territory well today mr president you are puncturing this big log.
7:03 am
you are recognizing israel sovereignty over all the jewish communities in judea and samaria large and small alike. this is what donald trump says a future palestinian state could look like the map he tweeted chose palestinian areas in talk green but the west bank and gaza connected by a tunnel he said east and jerusalem would be the capital of the state of palestine the palestinians have already made it clear this isn't a plan they're prepared to back or either hold or this i would like to say to trump and the. wanted to know that jerusalem is not for sale. well court and all our rights are not for sale. but not for bargaining your

conspiracy deal when not. if this new plan will need to move quickly is radio fishel saying netanyahu plans to ask the cabinet approval on sunday to make the proposed new quotas every hallett's. let's get more now with our correspondents tanya kramer in jerusalem and all of her salary in washington good morning to both of you oliver middle east peace is often called the holy grail of american politics is there a sense in washington that this plan can succeed where many others have failed. it's been many many presidents have tried their luck with very complicated field and there's therefore lot of skepticism right now in particular from democrats one democratic senator said that this plan if put into practice would diminish the prospects for a peaceful coexistence all israelis and palestinians in the region and we're now
7:05 am
essentially talking about a 2 state solution brian with only one state that was represented at the negotiating table and that of course was israel the palestinians were not included in the talks they were not invited to the presentation in the white house and in contras president talking about a win win all parts unity today and about a historic breakthrough which of course is anything but clear at this point in time tonya as we heard there from all over the palestinians were not on hand they've rejected this plan completely is there any chance that it's some point they might get on board with it. well i think it would be very difficult for the palestinian leadership to back this plan because it follows the israeli narrative is really needs for the security it doesn't really back the palestinian quest for self-determination for having a sovereign independent state it actually allows israel to keep most if not all of
7:06 am
to slim except for a few neighborhoods it also allows israel to start annexing parts of the west bank the settlements and the jordan valley so it falls short of an independent sovereign state this actually talk about living limited so friend and this is certainly not something the palestinians would back ok the palestinians looking at this very skeptically to say the least what about the israeli public do they back this plan especially its call for and asks parts of palestinian lands in the west bank. well there are many different opinions about that and there's also a lot of skepticism i mean from the more left leaning israelis you would you need a negotiated process which is based on the principle of 2 states 2 realistic
7:07 am
states with 2 people now among dividing especially the settlers settlers of course that's an absolute yes for an extension that's what they have been waiting for but no a big no to any notion of a palestinian state they have been some surveys about you know whether people would back an extension and there's a focus on the notion of unilaterally so nearly half of the public would not say if you need that to the next ation of some of the territories having said that the jordan valley there is a consensus among israelis that this should stay with israel but it could have serious repercussions also with because with relationship to it was jordan ok and the jordan valley is a very large corridor let's remind our viewers about that all or this announcement coming as a surprise can you tell us about the timing. rival president trump is under
7:08 am
enormous pressure with the ongoing impeachment trial here in the capital that is going to continue later today and of course what he's been doing here is to influence the media agenda covering that trial extensively right now so he's been very busy talk to entitle borsch in this presidential 1st at a big rally here in washington he traveled to the world economic forum in switzerland and now the middle east peace plan which of course in and of itself is a very important. point on a presidential agenda also as all forget we're in the middle of the election come pain with the iowa caucuses just one week away and then president trump is obviously really trying to cater to his voter base here in particular targeting evangelical christians that are very supportive of israel and that he needs for his reelection so he's really trying to paint that picture that he's the one getting things done and living up to his promises all over sell it for us in washington tom you kramer in jerusalem thanks very much to both of us let's

get you briefed now from the other stories making news this hour donald trump's legal team has concluded its opening arguments in the u.s. president's impeachment trial with an appeal for him to be swiftly acquitted his lawyers also attempted to marginalize former national security adviser john bolton whose testimony should the senate allow it or it could potentially incriminate the president. a powerful earthquake has struck in the western caribbean between cuba and jamaica shock waves sending people staggering into the streets the 7.7 magnitude quake was felt as far away as mexico and florida. in peru a judge has ordered the far right opposition leader go with maury back to jail for another 15 months judges of the jail term was preventative detention while investigators continue to probe allegations of money laundering and mori denies any

transmission in europe a man in his thirty's has tested positive for the corona virus in germany he's currently receiving treatment at this hospital in munich impotent. the patients doing very well has no fever currently has no more press pretorius symptoms. when i visited him he was awake he could talk and i can therefore say that his life is not in danger of. health officials say the now isolated man contracted the virus from a chinese colleague at a company training event here in this building in stanback near munich he began showing symptoms at the weekend his chinese colleague had traveled to germany from shanghai where she reportedly had contact with people from the wool hungry. the woman is now back in china where she tested positive for the virus herself. in 4

months we received this information yesterday and immediately informed the relevant authorities such as the public health department that i am from you and we also notified our employees. and we made the information public extend. health officials in bavaria said they were testing at least 40 people the 2 patients had had contact with their nieces left people in the area consent. this is said you get scared by this when something like this comes into our country. but germany's federal health minister says there is no reason for fia or panic yet. we are well prepared we will continue to be well prepared we take the virus very seriously but we must not become hysterical. there's no reason for sense of worry. as a precaution the minister said he would order eline pilots to pass on information
7:13 am
about the health of all passengers coming from china and to keep a record of their contacts in germany. and as an additional precaution even countries have started to back away sions from china are political corresponds front now in the studio more on that good morning hans german authorities saying there were guys in a flight to evacuate german nationals in who hunt province will these nationals are evacuated be quarantined upon their return something else really is now doing with hundreds of its nationals well what feels right in so doing is pretty drastic they're sending them to christmas island very very far off the coast of australia and want to keep them there for more than a week have no idea whether this is found in germany or elsewhere in europe at the moment the no plans public made public the official line is that when people are evacuated from china and reach me that they have to monitor themselves obviously people who show some symptoms of
7:14 am
a respiratory disease will in fact be hospitalized and isolated in hospital but those that have no symptoms are sent home basically and out told to monitor the temperature to see whether they have symptoms and only then will they be tested ok you know europe has open borders of course still to certain degree at least primarily what about other countries which are they other european countries are they also evacuating their citizens that you said there's no quarantine plans over europe and the european union has said that it is looking off to european union citizens in the region who. it is organizing to fly at the moment for people to be evacuated the 1st flight will get there today and it's likely that about $250.00 french that dozens will be evacuated on that flight and beyond that we don't know yet but there are inspection missions from the european union from germany as well on the ground in china who are assessing the situation and possibly will be
7:15 am
offering for the evacuation flights as i said the possibility of. putting people on the quarantine that has not been considered as far as i know so far ok no no german authorities are sounding very reassured they're saying there's no reason for alarm stay calm why are they so confident. well at the moment they're saying that there are not enough cases that have been confirmed in germany. to actually cause a huge outbreak of this sickness and also one has to say that as far as we know at the moment this disease is not as severe as for instance the saws infection some years ago which was more and more in fact of. at the moment people are saying what's more serious in fact is the common influence so that as more dangerous than this corona virus has some reassuring news in all of those odds thanks very much for that while the handful of cases here in germany are of course
7:16 am
minor in comparison to the havoc that the coronavirus virus is wreaking in asia as authorities are confirming more and more cases of the virus in mainland china hong kong's leader kerry lamb has announced plans to suspend all ferry and high speed rail links to the territory flights to china are also being cut in half and personal travel permits for mainland china to the city are to be suspended. so how's this all affecting a city already torn by months of protests trucks. joins us from hong kong good morning to you charlotte hong kong is imposed travel restrictions with china now what's the situation where you are. brian of course people here are starting to become very nervous the memories of the song's virus back in
7:17 am
2003 which left nearly 300 people dead here hong kong being one of the most badly affected by virus the memories of that still very fresh air very painful people wanting to take as many precautions as possible to try and spread the contagion of this virus here in hong kong now we know that schools have been closed into the middle of next month at least we've seen huge keys outside shops pharmacies trying to get a hold of face masks can sanitize the any sort of precautionary means that people can get that their hands on is now largely sold out in shops here is what people think as much as they can to try and avoid the spread of this virus a lot of people who are saying to just stay off the streets to remain in civil servants here been told that they can work from home as well a lot of public open spaces a closed events council of people here trying to take as many measures as possible
7:18 am
going forward ok what's the thinking in hong kong about the efficacy of these steps how effective can the travel restrictions be. a lot of people that we've spoken to who knows that they're not particularly reassured by these new measures that have been introduced people that we've spoken to say that they have come in fall so they're far too little and have cut that introduced far too late now authorities here say they're watching the measures they're watching is the situation. closely they say that these measures a very far reaching as we know high speed rail and network have been suspended haul flights have been cut but the fact is that they're all still borders that are open here in hong kong with mainland china buses for example we're at a bus station of the moment people arriving from the mainland and they'll continue to do so they want these measures come into effect so there's been a lot of criticism from medical professionals from ex-pats and a lot of crossed party criticism from people saying that in fact the board is need
