their services to and from china. president trump on bail says mideast peace plan alongside the israeli prime minister in washington it would hand israel control of more disputed territory for one reason the palestinians immediately rejected it. plus a final vote to seal bread said as a european parliament prepares its vote on britain's of parcher from the blocked date of you catches up with a british member of the e.u. parliament to strive not to look back in anger. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us israel's president has addressed german parliament in berlin to mark 75 years since the liberation of the auschwitz death camp we've been rivlin attended a special session in the bundestag at an annual event to remember the victims of nazi germany he warned of the rise of anti-semitism in europe echoing germany's
12:02 pm
president who sat at the evils of the past or returning in a new guy. and let's bring in our chief political editor michelle accuser she's been following all of this for us at the bundestag. this commemoration is being held as we said against this backdrop of rising anti-semitism in germany and elsewhere tell us how important this is. well that's very much been the tone of all the speeches we've heard so far we also heard from the president of german parliament. he said that there can be no healing by being silent about auschwitz and that projection into the future by germany's president. steinmeier who said that if you want to understand those crimes meaning there's nazi crimes in particular auschwitz is crimes those routes that lead to the gates of our spirits and if you follow them
12:03 pm
back they lead right into government offices back then just around the corner from here in berlin and that's been the overarching concern that the lessons have been theoretically learned that the speech is the words are spot on but that the rise of populism in the rise of anti-semitism and racism is a concern so let's just get a sense of that and listen to that sound bite from franklin. eventually i wish i could say with conviction especially in the presence of our guests from israel that we germans have understood. the become it is not how could i say that when hate and incitement are spreading when the poison of nationalism is again seeping into public discourse in germany as well. it's becoming how could i say that when it's risky for someone to wear
12:04 pm
a yarmulke. and i haven't made this up jews high menorahs. so the real concern here that the lives of jews here in germany once again being impacted by them not being able to show that open the and that is a deep concern that is shared also by the survivors who i had the opportunity to talk to yesterday. that they may be bearing witness that the lessons might not be learned in the future and michelle what did you hear the israeli president say. well quite clearly he also said that he was grateful for those special relations between germany and israel that germany was doing
12:05 pm
a lot he actually called german chancellor angela merkel representing the free world at the same time a clear warning from him saying that if jews can feel safe in the country where the holocaust happened they can't feel safe anywhere else in the world and also criticism from him about the real politics of today he referred to brawn here saying that iran was a tangible imminent threat for the israeli state clearly a sign that israel wants more solidarity on this very issue of the iran nuclear deal with germany where europe are really on the opposite end of the spectrum of how to contain iran they want to revive the iran nuclear deal and israel the united states believes there is absolutely no point in that so but also sign that both states can really bear criticism that germany is allowed to criticize israel and at
12:06 pm
the same time the israeli president also highlighting here that he's thankful for the strong stance that germany is taking against anti semitism in germany and worldwide now michel that you were just in auschwitz as you said for the ceremonies marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp how is the focus of these commemorations gradually shifting with time. well you couple of years ago it was still about also getting hold of this very last perpetrators still alive for some reason and through lack of action also political sides have been able to hide from their responsibility this year 75 years later where those survivors a very few although 200 actually were present at that commemoration in auschwitz while speaking to them they really feel the weight of responsibility on their
12:07 pm
shoulders not just to tell their story but to get across to the younger generation and that's also what is echoed in these speeches here that it's all about seeing the signs of the rise of anti semitism or any form of racism and that that all can lead to auschwitz again as one survivor put it in the commemoration. didn't fall from the sky and if the young generation isn't careful it won't even see the next our streets fall from the skies so clear shift they're looking into the present taking a hard look at the present and looking into the future i did have his chief political editor for us at the blunder stark thank you. now hundreds of foreign nationals are being evacuated from the chinese city of the epicenter of the corona virus outbreak more cases of the virus have been confirmed in china the death toll has risen to over 130 australia says its citizens who are
12:08 pm
being brought home from china will be quarantined on an offshore island at 1st and some airlines including british airways have suspended all flights to and from china. for 206 japanese workers based in this was they most welcome britain. a flight that brought medical supplies to the chinese province fighting to contain the coronavirus delivered them back to safety in japan the 1st of some 650 japanese citizens to be repatriated 100 soil i spoke of the situation they were thankful to leave behind. him sincerely relieved to have returned on this chartered flight were difficult to travel while we were there it was a worrying situation which was changing all very quickly through. a strike the also plans to bring patch read the most vulnerable of it $600.00 nationals we will be standing up christmas all in there's
12:09 pm
a quarantine area will be transported to christmas all and with all we will also be putting in place the met which will be travelling there to provide the medical support and that will be supplemented as necessary by the defense support which can assist the united states and south korea also both working to move the citizens out of china as the international community mobilizes china is grinding to in these standstill in beijing the streets are deserted subway stations largely empty. you know if it's to sit up i did a cottage hospital go on around the clock a chinese national health commission says it expects the outbreak to continue spreading and reach a peak in 10 days' time. and here in germany authorities have confirmed 4 cases of the coronavirus all 4 people are employees at the same auto supply company it's believed they fell ill after a seminar with a colleague from china the infected individuals have been quarantined in
12:10 pm
a hospital way they are receiving treatment meanwhile germany's health minister says there are plans to evacuate around 100 german nationals from will by play. in the fall but we need to be vigilant and prepared but we should maintain a proper sense of scale for example the 4 patients in germany are having just mild symptoms thank goodness we now have the genome sequence for the virus that was published on twitter and the 1st rapid test was developed here in berlin so gradually we're learning more about the virus and now let's get more on the story now derek williams from good of you science is with us here in studio hi derek we have the german health minister on there saying we need to be built vigilant but we also have to have a proper sense of scale here so how dangerous is this virus really when the one virus so far has proven to not be as as deadly as either sars or me mers the other coronaviruses that it's closely related to sars kills about 10 percent of the
12:11 pm
people who get it mers kills over 30 percent of the people who get it so the mortality rate with this with this new virus is much much lower than that is certainly under 5 percent so that's that's the good news that said however on the other hand it i mean the good news being that it doesn't also appear to kill normal healthy adults it's mostly also affecting people with compromised immune systems and certainly also the elderly however that said it does it is a serious disease and and the seriousness which with a lot that's in many ways very similar to. pneumonia and so it has to be treated and so the question is is to what extent are healthcare providers going to be overwhelmed if really thousands and thousands and thousands of people get it all at once and that's what we're seeing efforts to contain this virus ramping up and scientists in australia now say they have grown a version of this virus in a lab how could that help stop the virus well it's very important to have have livestocks of the virus for it for a number of different reasons 1st of all that help in testing when you're testing
12:12 pm
for vaccines it helps you for it selectivity and specific city the specific the specificness of being able to to target vaccines that that will actually also that are within that that that area of corona virus prevention so it's important to have it it's also important because in the course of of testing vaccines you have to be able to do a lot of it is animal testing so you have to be able to infect the animals that you're testing your vaccines on with the virus for that you need stocks of virus also another aspect of it is that it's not clear that everybody is actually contract ing that is easy and so the numbers that we have and of people who might have contracted it or are still pretty big and so you might you would also be able to do what's called antibody testing if you have a live virus you can do some antibody tests you can provide antibodies that testing that tells you how many people have actually had it and that will of course improve the statistics will know more about how many people are getting it and how long and
12:13 pm
how many people are actually showing ok so that's an important step at the same time there are companies scientists working on a vaccine if you look at the sars outbreak it took several months to develop a vaccine what is the timeframe we're talking about here well that the timeframe what's interesting is that as you said it's as we said earlier this corona virus is closely related to sars and murders and so so we're not starting from scratch. what's interesting though is in fact seen development is not coming up with a vaccine it's the testing in. the vaccine that actually takes a lot of time because you have to make sure safety is going to be obviously paramount and so the testing of the vaccine in animal models is going to take a great deal of time and then obviously when you have the problems with production ramping up production after you've proven that you have a safe vaccine and so we're not talking about a coup it's not a question of days or weeks we're talking about certainly months or possibly even years all right derek williams from science thank you very much now to some

east alongside israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu now under the proposal palestinians would gain statehood but they would also give up largest stretches of land so let's take a closer look at this plan 1st of all let's look at the current map of the region that's been released by the white house you see here that israel is in dark orange and the palestinian controlled territories the west bank and gaza here are in yellow on the map so let's take a look at what donald trump is calling his vision for peace his plan for peace in the middle east and as you can see here it grants vast tracts of disputed land including the jordan valley to israel and it retains these are controversial spots that you see on the map these are israeli settlements within palestinian tory territory now the palestinians would receive these parcels of land you see here in the south but critically jerusalem would be the undivided capital of israel palestinian president mahmoud abbas has denounced the plan. president trump and
12:16 pm
prime minister netanyahu pushing their international peace plan but they've both got troubles at home and impeachment hearings against trump a continuing in the senate and on tuesday yes and you know he was formally charged with bribery and fraud but there was no mention of interest or scandals at the white house. under this vision jerusalem will remain israel's undivided very important undivided capital. but that's no big deal because i've already done that for you right. we've already done that but that's ok for too long far too long the very heart of the land of israel where our patriarchs prayed our prophets preached and our kings ruled has been outrageously branded as illegally occupied territory well today mr president you are puncturing this big log.
12:17 pm
you are recognizing israel sovereignty over all the jewish communities in judea and samaria large and small alike. this is what donald trump says a future palestinian state could look like the map he tweeted chose palestinian areas into green but the west bank and gaza connected by a tunnel he said east jerusalem would be the capital of the state of palestine the palestinians have already made it clear this isn't a plan they're prepared to back or read on hold of this i would like to say to trump and the whole wanted to know that jerusalem is not for sale. well court and all our rights are not for sale. but not for a bargain anymore your conspiracy not.
12:18 pm
this new plan will need to move quickly israeli officials say netanyahu plans to ask for cabinet approval on sunday to make the proposed new quotas a reality. let's get some perspective on this story now we have baker with us he's a political consultant who has worked closely with palestinian leaders akram thank you for joining us here and i'm here what do you make of this peace plan how does it how much does it really shift the situation well it's not a peace plan it's absolute abdication of all of our palestinian rights it is a deal done between netanyahu and trump which just exemplifies the right wing extremist views that are propagate in the world today is that he said it's completely denouncing essentially a palestinian state but it does of course allow for palestinian land and a capital in east jerusalem no it doesn't it is 1st of all they're not disputed
12:19 pm
territories they are illegally occupied territories. as we heard the israeli prime minister of foreign direct and they are illegally occupied territories and it gives israel and gives the right wing of israel and the united states and the evangelical right when you the christians and every single thing they want and it's giving the palestinians some vague promise of becoming a bantustan because that's exactly what they're getting if you look at that map it kind of looks like south africa in the 19 $170.00 s. and eighty's ok well you said in an interview on t.v. that essentially israel does already claim or control all of this land already and that palestine essentially doesn't exist on the maps of does it not confirm the situation that doesn't exist so in my opinion let's thank donald trump. for finally giving the death knell to the so-called peace process which i was involved with 30 years ago from 30 years ago till today we're talking about the same things israel controls all of palestine and all israel and the problem is that
12:20 pm
this is going to continue and if this is going to formalize it then bring everybody and 2 into one state and we'll call it call it is roll call of palestine but to become a democratic state where there's 11 man one woman one vote donald trump has said he's open to negotiation so what options are there for palestinians at this point and not in my opinion the only option the palestinians have is and i've been calling on this for quite a while and maybe this is the time that they'll finally do it is to absolve to dissolve the palestinian authority it is nothing but a sham there should be no so-called security cooperation with israel israel rules that area they occupy that area they should be responsible for all of the palestinian people in the population living within these territories we cannot give them any more figleaves it's the only way to do this otherwise this is a fast track to war or genocide ok you'd say that would be the solution going
12:21 pm
forward how do you feel about the reactions that we saw from germany for example from europe fairly muted we did see the u.k. say that they welcome any step towards a solution that means peace between israelis and the house in which i actually hold western europe just as much responsible for what's happening right as if they're just going to say oh we protest or it's mute or we're not going to do anything they are the ones who are perpetuating this israel's largest trading partners not the united states it's with the european union so what should germany the european union living in to put their foot out and hit israel work has to say there are costs there you have to be held have to be held accountable for their policies which are going against everything in the european constitution rights all right that's all we have time for at this moment akram baker a political consultant who has worked closely with a palestinian leader's thank you for joining us here to give you. now you're watching news still to come on our show we'll show you at the steer the celebrations for cut short by our road stricker causing controversy in the
