influence on film features in a new exhibition in basel. and far from the usual kitsch cuckoo clocks as a protest against one german cities housing crunch. you probably know the fairy tale hansel and gretel but this is gretel and hansel a new horror movie that delivers all the terror of the original grimm brothers tale and ben so the sister and brothers lives take a turn for the worse when their father abandons them in the woods on the orders of their wicked stepmother. parents how has a way of getting into your head. even before you're. somehow you just never. know is when i think. it's a story we all know but never like this children. she doesn't smiles and they can. grate a little in huntsville goes back to the dark roots of the original german grimm
10:46 pm
brothers fairy tale to concoct its tasty terrors. to hungry children lost in the woods come across a house filled with food. but danger lurks within. who are in so. boring heavily from recent poor hits like the witch director of hospital perkins there's a new twist to the old tale it's a story this has scared everybody for hundreds of years there are. teflon that. has had a chance to start something you can't stop. in a feminist touch more detail which tries to convince grateful and clears only one thing little bullets are good for. this is left. to me.
10:47 pm
and dover's your film critic scott rock's fair is here with me now scott i have to ask you you said in our report this is a feminist take is there a new feminist agenda which is eating little boys that i missed something yeah yeah it's not really postmodern feminism i mean maybe it's pretty modern of how it isn't yeah i definitely don't think this this is being advocated by modern feminist groups but the way to direct your approach is the story is quite interesting he sets up this does world as being credibly male dominated and that the girls like great all are worth nothing in this world and then she goes out to the woods she meets this witch who is the most powerful person much more powerful than any man she's ever met right which becomes sort of a i don't know mother like figure to her and she teaches her about as we would say day talks like masculinity should consider that over her brother who seems so sweet
10:48 pm
now he's going to turn to a horrible man and he's going to abuse her and subjugate her and so forth and so ok the solution to to to eat eat a little boy's probably wouldn't be advocated by most but but very interesting even some maybe some maybe some who knows but of course you have to also understand the the director of good perkins he's the son of a psycho actor anthony perkins so it could be that he's just trying to work out some issues you know we don't we're just we're actually going to have a little look at the movie psycho later in the show 1st though in the last decades we're talking about the grim brothers these stories have been so watered down for children in the last decades what kind of details from the original story have they brought back here yeah they brought out all sort of the really gruesome elements of the of the story so so you know the horror of like these kids being cast out basically to starve in the woods which is in the in the original tale and also really the bloodiness of it so the way the needs of the which is an east children and the way she comes to her a bit around. no spoilers but. but what i find interesting is also the changes that
10:49 pm
the directors made i mean the main one in the original tale the kids are about the same age here he makes gretel much older and 16 the kid much younger me clear the gretel it's gretel story she's in charge and she's the hero ok so that's why it's gretel and hands one of these are german stories it strikes me that we're here in germany why aren't there german movies and t.v. shows based on the grim brothers' tales yeah i mean it has so many things in german culture goes back to the war before world war 2 germany had made a lot of horror movies of films like nosferatu goal novels created the horror film genre but after that the idea of the holocaust the idea of turning horror into entertainment lost its losses taste and still is very taboo the only film i can think of that takes elements of the group brothers and does a different thing with it is the netflix series dark which isn't about the grimm stories but it uses some elements of the sort of the dark danger of the woods and

so forth but that's basically the only one grimm's built the sort of foundations of these fairy tales but it's up to a non germans mainly americans and then there is this to this witness to in ireland gretel and handle had cinemas this week thanks so much scott for coming on the show . and talking about sources of cinematic inspiration artist edward hopper's quiet uncanny paintings of american life have influenced filmmakers from alfred hitchcock to david lynch a new exhibition of harper's works at the phone i assume bio now and switzerland includes a 3 d. movie about his paintings by german director of invent us now hopper died more than 5 decades ago but his psychologically charged canvas is still make our brains feel all tangled even today. there's a sense of foreboding in the pictures of edward hopper what exactly is going on here is something bad about to happen.
10:51 pm
who are these people and what are they waiting for the pictures are very much like stills from a movie. or wonder that so many great film directors have found inspiration here. the museum funded sean bell near basel in switzerland managed to get vim vendors on board to make a 3 d. short film to accompany their major harper show. in its venders brings the pictures to learn from and reflects on the stories they could be telling stories of solitude and melancholy. when vendors drops by causes quite as they're. better fodder what
10:52 pm
questions come into your head when you see this picture of this one in. the fog is the question is clear or 2 she waiting for what can she see she is pure expectation and that's the crazy thing about hopper pictures for they always demand that you see the next picture you want to take the story further yourself if the fight at the edge could moves over. a major theme in this show papa's landscapes the framing is narrow but if you like george thoughts run with the picture it soon becomes fast to the tracks in front of the house so you. things go further what you can't see is often more importance. to the artist and would hoppa have to say about his inspiration.
10:53 pm
from hope and hope as pictures oh most unbearably mysterious it's really this a wonder that hitchcock love him so much over that they influence throughout the film makers the director alfred hitchcock and that spooky house from psycho. and now. the most die hard will eventually break of course and would hop up provided the template. now many artists could make a sunny day sunny day look as creepy as edward hopper did but now we're going to move from harper's rambling country houses to the big city to crowded apartment blocks and this next artist takes his inspiration from big apartment buildings

which is rather unusual considering that he makes cuckoo clocks. bleak concrete apartment blocks as far as the eye can see keynotes him a man has an appreciation for this kind of aesthetic he's exploring frankfurt seeking inspiration for his art. these cuckoo clocks are inspired by this architecture and an artistic form of protest highlighting the lack of affordable housing in frankfurt today but they're also a homage to the prefab apartment blocks so many people call home. fittingly ghetto symon calls this quirky take on traditional black forest cuckoo clocks cuckoo clock. published before hand

i saw my 1st cool clocks by hand but that was really difficult because these buildings in the windows are extremely symmetrical since he lives. he works with great precision paying attention to the smallest details like transforming tiny buttons into minute satellite dishes. creates limited editions of $25.00 cuckoo clocks each. apartment blocks symbolize germany and so do cuckoo clocks so it's a sin to be osis of them both they both go together very well and that's possible sick would. he do appreciates many things that others consider ugly during inspiration from apartment blocks and from buildings with a unique history. like the a.f.e. tower that once belonged to the university of frankfurt but was demolished in 2014

. it. also finds inspiration in brutalist architecture from france and the u.k. . was. his cuckoo blocks meanwhile are highly sought after he sells them around the world for $3000.00 euros a piece. talk them over my ask buyers to send me a picture of where they placed the clock and sometimes they live in these swank the religious they put the prefab cuckoo block on their walls it's really funny and bogus to post it. that's the irony of the success story. kiddos latest project meanwhile involves creating homes for indigenous birds and insects. he's even developed an eco insect hotel. inspired by the housing
