on film features in a new exhibition in basel. and far from the usual kitsch cuckoo clocks as a protest against one german city's housing crunch. you probably know the fairy tale hansel and gretel but this is gretel and hansel a new horror movie that delivers all the terror of the original grimm brothers tale and then so the sister and brothers lives take a turn for the worse when their father abandons them in the woods on the orders of their wicked stepmother. their town has a way of getting into your head. even before you. somehow you just never. know when i think. it's a story we all know but never like this see children. should also smiles of bacon. grateful in hansal goes back to the dark roots of the original german grimm

brothers fairy tale to concoct its tasty tears. to hungry children lost in the woods come across a house filled with food. but danger lurks within. or in some. boring heavily from recent poor hits like the witch director hospital perkins is a new twist to the old tale it's a story that has scared everybody for hundreds of years. test that. has hate for you to start something you can't stop. in a feminist the which tries to convince grateful and clears only one thing little bullets are good for. this is left.
11:47 am
and dover's your film critic scott rock's fur is here with me now scott i have to ask you you said in our report this is a feminist take is there a new feminist agenda which is eating little boys that i missed something yeah yeah it's not really postmodern feminism i mean maybe it's pretty modern of how it isn't yeah i definitely don't think this this is being advocated by modern feminist groups but the way the director approaches the story is quite interesting he sets up this just world as being credibly male dominated and that the girls like great a lot worth nothing in this world and then she goes out to the woods she meets this witch who is the most powerful person much more powerful than any man she's ever met rice which becomes sort of a i don't know a mother like figure to her and she teaches her about as we would say de toxic masculinity should ensure that over her brother who seems so sweet now he's going
11:48 am
to turn to a horrible man and he's going to abuse her and subjugate her and so forth and so ok the solution to to to eat eat a little boy's probably wouldn't be advocated by most but but very interesting even some maybe some maybe some who knows but of course you have to also understand the the director of good perkins he's the son of a psycho actor anthony perkins so it could be that he's just trying to work out some issues you know we don't we're just we're actually going to have a little look at the movie psycho later in the show 1st though in the last decades we're talking about the grimm brothers these stories have been so watered down for children in the last decades what kind of details from the original story have they brought back here yeah they've all sort of the really gruesome elements of the of the story so you know the horror of like these kids being cast out basically to starve in the woods which is in the in the original tale and also really the bloodiness of it the way the needs of the witches eats children and the way she comes to her bitter end you know spy. you know. but what i find interesting is also
11:49 am
the changes of the directors made i mean the main one in the original tale the kids are about the same age here he makes gretel much older and 16 the kid much younger may clear the gravel it's gretel story she's in charge and she's the hero ok so that's why it's gretel and hands one of these are german stories it strikes me that we're here in germany why aren't there german movies and t.v. shows based on the grim brothers' tales yeah i mean it has so many things in german culture goes back to the war before world war 2 germany had made a lot of horror movies like nosferatu goal novels created the horror film genre but after that the idea of the holocaust the idea of turning horror into entertainment lost its losses taste and still is very taboo the only film i can think of that takes elements of the group brothers and does a different thing with it is the netflix series dark which isn't about the grimm stories but it uses some elements of the sort of the dark danger of the woods and

so forth but that's basically the only one grimm's built the sort of foundations of these fairy tales but it's up to a non germans mainly americans and then i read this to this witness who is in ireland gretel and handle had cinemas this week thanks so much scott for coming on the show and and talking about sources of cinematic inspiration artist edward hopper's quiet uncanny paintings of american life have influenced filmmakers from alfred hitchcock to david lynch a new exhibition of harper's works of the phone as shown by a now and switzerland includes a 3 d. movie about his paintings by german director of invent us now hopper died more than 5 decades ago but his psychologically charged canvas is still make our brains feel all tingly even today. there's a sense of foreboding in the pictures of edward hopper what exactly is going on here. is something panned about to happen.

who are these people and what are they waiting for the pictures are very much like stills from a movie. or wonder that so many great film directors have found inspiration here. the museum for. near basel in switzerland managed to get grim vendors on board to make a 3 d. short film to accompany their major show. in its venders brings the pictures to learn from and reflects on the stories they could be telling stories of solitude and melancholy. when vendors drops by and causes quite as they're. very foggy what

questions come into your head when you see this picture of this one in. the floggers the question is clear what is she waiting for what can she see she has pure expectation of that's the crazy thing about hopper pictures or do they always demand that you see the next picture you want to take the story further yourself you have to fight at the edge goodmans over. a major theme in this show papa's landscapes the framing is narrow but if you let george thoughts run with the picture it soon becomes faster on the tracks in front of the house so you. things go further what you can't see is often more importance. to the artist and would hope have to say about his inspiration.

from hope and hope as pictures oh most unbearably mysterious it's really there's a wonder that hitchcock laugh at them so much over that they influence throughout the film because the director alfred hitchcock in that spooky house from psycho. out. the most. horrible events took place of course and would hop out provided the template. now many artists could make a sunny day sunny day look as creepy as edward hopper did but now we're going to move from harper's rambling country houses to the big city to crowded apartment blocks and this next artist takes his inspiration from big apartment buildings
