i'm melissa chan and welcome to news asia thank you for joining us it's been 7 years since the violent gang rape and murder of a 23 year old woman in delhi the story made international headlines and sparked massive nationwide protests in india the college student and her male friend were brutally attacked on a bus it were beaten with an iron bar the woman raped repeatedly and then dumped by the side of the road she died from her injuries 2 weeks later it led to the tightening of the country's rape laws the 4 men convicted of the crime worse scheduled to hang this weekend those executions are now delayed. we have. as well in delhi for more of this process has taken so long there must be a sense of frustration from people and of course there has been so much outrage but
2:32 pm
i wonder has that outrage also meant division in the country most definitely release of the fact that this process has taken 7 long as has been frustrating not just for the victim's family but for people across the country brought us just bored out into the streets 7 long years ago and justice is only being delivered now according to many but this also indicates one of the key problems in india which is the gear shows they should be that which the judicial system moves now the caseload is very heavy in indian courts and the judges in these courts are not as many so this has been a key problem one of the points which has been causing the visions or the thought in this case is that all who have spoken out against capital punishment are seen as favoring rapists but they have pointed out that just in the ring captured by michelin it will not change what is seen as india's or the seen as an appalling of

india speech yaki and that more in heaven changes changes from the roots are needed to fix this problem now justice for one doesn't mean justice for all i understand that quite frequently cases come up of brutal rapes in the country still. well definitely melissa just months after this fruitless gang rape in 22 hour india tightened its 3 applause and made them much more strict but we continue to short of qualifying incidences where young children are being raped and elderly women are also being raped just recently there was a brutal gang rape and failing ghana in which the offend those the offenders were actually shot down by the police and this tree is a lot of controversy as such as well but this brings me back to the point that some detractors of capital punishment are making critics are making about the current reforms in india which is that simply giving capital punishment a meeting out meeting out these harsh measures is not going to solve the problem
2:34 pm
that we must dial back to the root of the problem which is perhaps the inherent patriarchy that tribes in india and one such group was actually trying to shift the onus from women onto men and asked the question what exactly are men and boys doing to ensure that the women are not subjected to the continuous and massive amounts of gender based violence we have seen in india and the visited one such groups efforts in indian school with us in the suburbs of new delhi to find out exactly how they're trying to involve boys in the empowerment of women. this is not a usual school before 7th grade thing. the questions he's being asked are more open ended than usual a man should have to final say in every decision made in the house the trainer says he has to choose do you agree do you disagree or are you on the side of.

the 12 year old boys run to their corners. one group says both parents should have equal see. a few others see the older wiser one should hesitantly indicating the man. there are no wrong answers. the goal of the session is to provide an open platform to talk about the notions of sex and gender that these boys have grown up but topics that are rarely brought to the trainer follows up with simple questions . is bearing children the only role of a woman. is it physically possible for women to do the work that men do. ajeet has been attending these sessions for 3 months now he says he has learned a lot about the importance of equality at home at work and in school. i want to tell my father that he should never be evolved with my mother and i can do my share of the chores at home just like my sister. got it there's

a lot of. this is what the center for equal to going to include in the n.g. all that runs these sessions is hoping for. that engaging boys at this age will encourage empathy and respect in the long run. i want to mark that one today the boys are talking about the unpaid work of their mothers the need for women to participate in decision making and for men to help out at home and this is an important 1st step. she change will be an uphill task while many men and women rallied to strengthen india's laws on rape. there has been a backlash by those wild it that the new rules now discriminate against men the. men are being wrongfully accused under these a little but already told us like there is a women's commission we need a men's commission true that the. rules are good but they're very often misused in most cases the women take on jew advantage. in my love for the.

even those who are innocent and sometimes hold out for their needs to be stronger investigations and protections from in. the us worse is them starts only. as the boys and girls keep to themselves. then notions of the other can be heavily biased. in another school the workshops are just beginning the boys are calling out the differences between men and women men can wear what they like women must come home on time men can endure more pain them and don't enter politics . between arts but it's a boom and physically unable to do any of these things. slowly but surely the perceived differences are starting to disappear you know. michelle i want to follow up and ask this was an engineer so how many classes are they putting out how many
2:38 pm
classes are there across the country there are a 1000000000 people it looks like the journey will take a very long time families of this and cio is dealing with 15 schools and around new delhi and they're continuing gauging with these boys for over a year but they are of course hoping that this gets picked up by the government so that these programs can spread across the country so far and also steps being taken by the men's rights activists definitely think that this could be an important way to go to address gender based violence and. well thank you. there's unrest in hong kong but not the usual we have seen over the past few months though this still involves public dissatisfaction with the government it's about corona virus and the fact that officials still have not chosen to shut its borders

hong kong has have strong memories of the sars epidemic of 2003 and they want to see more action from authorities this is what it takes to find a face mask in hong kong long early morning queues no guarantees just rivets then maybe some in stock. as the doors open these people are unlucky with the number of coronavirus cases growing facemasks a largely sold out many say they're taking their safety into their own hands concerned authorities here often enough. how they would see after sars we understand how serious this could be so many experts have already urge the government to take more action the chief executive kerry lamb just wouldn't listen . i'm not happy not enough is being done. or is all i can do is stock up on face masks and avoid crowded areas where they feel. a number of borders
