how songs. are to job. searching songs like that don't go away stay with us for all time it's. time to. start over and. you're watching news asia coming up awaiting execution in india the man behind a violent rape that captured global headlines are yet to face their punishment plus . how the people of hong kong are handling both coronavirus fears and their continued political struggle with the government. and the mission of boarded the japanese billionaire looking for lunar love says she'll now fly solo to the moon.
3:31 pm
i'm melissa chana welcome to news asia thank you for joining us it's been 7 years since the violent gang rape and murder of a 23 year old woman in delhi the story made international headlines and sparked massive nationwide protests in india the college student and her male friend were brutally attacked on a bus they were beaten with an iron bar the woman raped repeatedly and then dumped by the side of the road she died from her injuries 2 weeks later it led to the tightening of the country's rape laws the 4 men convicted of the crime worse scheduled to hang this weekend those executions are now delayed. we have to be should judge while in delhi for more than we should this process has
3:32 pm
taken so long there must be a sense of frustration from people and of course there has been so much outrage but i wonder has that outrage also meant division in the country most definitely release of the fact that this process has taken 7 long as has been frustrating not just for the week to this family but for people across the country brought us just bored out into the streets 7 long years ago and justice is only being delivered now according to many but this also indicates one of the key problems in india which is the fear shows they should be that which the judicial system moves now the caseload is very heavy in indian courts and the judges in these courts are not as many so this has been a key problem one of the points which has been causing divisions also in this case is that doors who have spoken out against capital punishment favoring rapists but
3:33 pm
they have pointed out that just in the rink after punishment will not change what is seen as india's rape culture what is seen as an appalling up in the s.p. tree aki and that more in heaven changes changes from the votes are needed to fix this problem now just as for one doesn't mean justice for all i understand quite frequently cases come up of brutal rapes in the country still. well definitely melissa just months after this brutal gang rape in $22.00 india tightened 3 applause and made them much more strict but we continue to show the fire fighting incidences where young children are being raped and elderly women are also being raped just recently there was a brutal gang rape and failing ghana in which the offend those the offenders were actually shot down by the police and the street is a lot of controversy as such as well but this brings me back to the point that some
3:34 pm
detractors of capital punishment are making critics are making about the current reforms in india which is that simply giving capital punishment of meeting our meeting out these harsh measures is not going to solve the problem that we must dial back to the root of the problem which is perhaps the inherent patriarchy that tribes in india and one such group is actually trying to shift the onus from women onto men and asked the question what exactly are men and boys doing to ensure that the women are not subjected to the continuous and massive amounts of gender based violence we have seen in india and we visited one such groups efforts in indian school with us in the suburbs of new delhi to find out exactly how they're trying to involve boys in the empowerment of women. this is not a usual school before 7th grade thing. the questions he is being asked are more open ended than usual a man should have to final say in every decision made in the house the trainer says
3:35 pm
he has to choose do you agree do you disagree or are you under side of. the 12 year old boys run to their corners. one group says both parents should have equal see. a few others see if the older wiser one should hesitantly indicating the man. there are no wrong answers. the goal of the session is to provide an open platform to talk about the notions of sex and gender that these boys have grown up but topics that are rarely brought. the trainer follows up with simple questions you know is bearing children the only role of a woman. is it physically possible for women to do the work that men do. ajeet has been attending these sessions for 3 months now he says he has learned a lot about the importance of equality at home at work and in school.
3:36 pm
i want to tell my father that he should never be violent with my mother and i can do my share of the chores at home just like my sister. got theirs i was not ok. this is what the center for equal to going to include the ngo that runs the sessions is hoping for. that engaging boys and this each will encourage empathy and respect in the long run. i want to mark that one today the boys are talking about the unpaid work of their mothers the need for women to participate in decision making and for men to help out at home and this is an important 1st step. change will be an uphill task while many men and women rallied to strengthen india's laws on rape. there has been a backlash by the doors while that the new rules now discriminate against men. men are being wrongfully accused under these little party totus like there is a women's commission we need
3:37 pm
a men's commission to that the. rules are good but they're very often misused in most cases the women take on jew advantage. in my love for the. even those who are innocent and sometimes hold out for their needs to be stronger investigations and protections from in. the us worse is them starts only. as the boys and girls keep to themselves then notions of the other can be heavily biased. in another school the workshops are just beginning the boys are calling out the differences between men and women men can wear what they like women must come home on time men can endure more pain them and don't enter politics. between artists but is a woman physically unable to do when you have these things. slowly but surely the perceived differences are starting to disappear you know. michelle i want to follow

up and ask this was an engineer so how many classes are they putting out how many classes are there across the country they are a 1000000000 people it looks like the journey will take a very long time so many service and show is dealing with 15 schools and around new delhi and they're continuing gauging with these boys for over a year but they are of course hoping that this gets picked up by the government so that these programs can spread across the country so far no such steps being taken but the men's rights activists definitely think that this could be an important way to go to address gender based violence and. as well thank you. there's unrest in hong kong but not the usual we have seen over the past few months
3:39 pm
though this still involves public dissatisfaction with the government it's about corona virus and the fact that officials still have not chosen to shut its borders hong kong has have strong memories of the sars epidemic of 2003 and they want to see more action from authorities this is what it takes to find a face mask in hong kong long early morning queues no guarantees just rebids there may be some in stock. as the doors open these people are lucky with the number of coronavirus cases growing facemasks a largely sold out many say they're taking their safety into their own hands concerned authorities here aren't doing enough. how they would see after sars we understand how serious this could be so many experts have already urge the government to take more action the chief executive kerry lamb just wouldn't listen . not happy not enough is being done. all i can do is stock

up on face masks and avoid crowded areas. a number of borders with neighboring mainland china have now been closed high speed rail services and ferries suspended toll groups ended and individual travel permits no longer issued . authorities say they are monitoring the situation carefully but many have slammed these new restrictions is it effective. some flights are still operating major land borders still open. many fear that cripples atthis to stop the spread. buses like this one continue to arrive bringing people from mainland china here into the heart of hong kong and it's exactly this which many say needs to be stopped. is feared the number of cases in hong kong may already be higher than the we can suggest many say closing the

border completely is now the option was too little too late expression and the golden carrot to stop the spread of these d.c. corona virus disease it has cost according to most of the professionals and almost this is a lost child just for us to stop the stress medical professionals are among those calling for borders to be closed warning that failure to do so puts the safety of the public and their colleagues at risk. i think this deal very easy for those. potentially sick patients to come down to a home even you don't shut the border completely priest shortened your hours of opening but days to ignore a request suggestion unless the demands of met many medical staff are threatening strike action as next week once again this is

is really happening great britain is leaving the european union after 3 years of tough negotiations deeply divided country media much more for a few generations remaining. time to say good bye our briggs's special edition. on t.w. . britain goes it alone what will happen to one of the world's top economies where the u.k. leaves the e.u. tonight trade talks will be tough but they could also be new opportunities. for the rising economic might of india propel the brits forward post brings it despite the u.k. having always balked at an e.u. indian trade deal due to fears of a migration. also coming up markets tumble as the w h o declares the coronavirus
3:45 pm
a global emergency some say the warning comes to light. i've been for so long let's do business tonight at midnight sprint and will exit the european union but this is not the end of break that this is where the real fun begins because in the coming months both will have to negotiate a new relationship during this transition period and time is not on their side. it's a race against time. the u.k. and the e.u. have until the end of 2022 to find their new post brecht's that relationship and there's still a long way to go so one of the issues that need sorting trade is the biggest one i thank the trade relation between the 2 how are we going to trade with each other are we going to have tariffs or are we not going to have targets in the way that we have changed goods and services that's going to be i think the biggest thing to do a successful outcome on this key issue will depend on the u.k. agreeing to the call.
