researches find an innovative way to feed cows and cut greenhouse gases in kenya. i've been to school and that's the business britain exits the european union tonight but it's not the end of breaks it this is where the fun begins in the coming months both sides will have to negotiate a new relationship during the transition period and africa is looking on a new opportunities in the days leading up to breaks that leaders of $21.00 african nations turned up to london for the very 1st u.k. africa investment summit jones and co for britain to be their investment partner of choice he highlighted deals worth billions of pounds in which british companies are providing anything and everything from street lighting in nigeria to environmentally friendly breweries in kenya but british trade with africa is only 2 percent of its total and britain's way behind china dozens more african presidents attended the last china africa summit all the gatherings russia holds with the

continent. well let's have a close look at how the u.k. sizes up to other economies when it comes to trade with africa it was far behind the confidence biggest 3 trading partners the european union china and the united states with just a fraction of total e.u. trade with africa and 2018 so with $19000000000.00 in official development united kingdom has been one of the easily contributors of development funding of which africa gets a big chunk it was 2nd only to germany and the city of london is the most significant financial center for a few african businesses outside the continent more than 100 african companies with a market capitalization exceeding 160000000000 a listed on the london stock exchange so what does the ukase exit from the e.u. mean for africa my colleague. is here to talk about exactly that 1st of all start with trade and investment between you the u.k.

and africa. what's going to happen they think well i mean of course we saw the u.k. africa investment summit which is just mentioned and of course a lot of deals were mentioned where you know announced at that particular summit so they wanted to go to start the year with a bang when it came to trade with africa and the host of increasing their trade stuff the u.k. government has been increasing their trade stuff on the african continent by around 20 percent in like 23 countries if i remember correctly and they are trying to get as many people on the ground and trying to do as many things so we're going to hear a few more announcements probably going along in the year but in terms of what it how it compares to trade with africa from you know china or the u.s. with africa it's way behind and it's going to have to do a lot of catching up ok so we've talked a lot about the u.k. and it's a fit as far as africa goes what about the e.u. well the e.u. it's going to be interesting to see how the e.u. of course copes without the u.k.

the u.k. is a big contributor especially to the your can development fund in terms of money it's one of the biggest 3 it was you know france germany and the u.k. and they going to be losing a lot of money so things are going to change in the u.k. table basically you going to have france and germany being the 2 biggest donors and the african country that might want to get something done at the e.u. table might need to be speaking with those 2 countries so that's what's going to be interesting from the e.u. perspective there are any clear winners in this rage a clear winner is we can say it's complicated maybe that's the best way to say it i spoke with a couple of experts about this and what's interesting is of course seeing how things play out on the e.u. level whether it's germany or france taking more charge and how african countries can leverage their relations with those particular countries of course that the u.k. level it depends on what kind of relationship they have with the u.k. government that's you know of course boris johnson's government if they can impress

them with what they're doing and their priorities then things might actually play to the advantage so there are opportunities there but it remains complicated thank you very much to part it nice to know. well it was 4 years ago that a majority voted to leave the european union in that break that referendum in. the majority one of the opposite it shares a border with e.u. member states spain which was hotly contested at times but everyone is now going for hominy clearing a german residents of gibraltar. yani smock font is on his way to work on a mild sunny morning the german ex-pat believes in spain but is employed in gibraltar 15000 workers commute across the border like this every day. you have the best of both worlds of good british salary in pounds and the spanish lifestyle that my family and i are fond of. john is works for the

betting company lotto land the business has customers everywhere including the e.u. a competitor has already relocated many jobs to the tax haven malta and e.u. member state not all that just continuing to grow in gibraltar though and the boss says he's not worried i think net net there's been very little change in the gaming industry said we have no intention to move we have a license that 8 or 9 jurisdictions including multinationals from the culture of european facing business but we don't have the stuff that and we've no intention of moving significant stuff the minister of finance doesn't see it as a threat to gibraltar as future 92 percent of its financial services business is conducted with the u.k. the bigger issue is the border with spain when you got 1415000 people crossing the front in the morning to come into work and back in the evening it's a lot of people so we need to be sure that we have put in the time and the effort as we want to to ensure that there is no disruption to the fluidity which is
