this is the w. news live from berlin and britain wakes up to a new era after its official exit from the european you'd get in a divided country the drawn out divorce brings happiness for some and heartbreak for others while the final settlement is far from clear. also coming up to vote side democrats hoping to call witnesses in president trump's impeachment trial are defeated in the senate clearing the way for trump's almost certain acquittal in the coming days.

i was there kelly welcome to the program after 3 years of high stakes political drama since it voted to leave the european union britain is out of the block at the stroke of midnight brussels time the u.k. ended nearly half a century of membership in the e.u. but gregg's it is still not a done deal the 2 sides now embark on 11 months transition period and the difficult work of finding the terms of a new relationship. bringing in the change is a recording of big ben bomb didn't brick sit at the prime minister's residence in downing street but the country is still riven by the it's you. know you celebrating presence exit from the e.u. in parliament square did so with a fierce passion. and for some britain had been set free.
12:02 pm
expression really like. this. i think. the so called breck's it is like nigel for russia to force a long campaign to take the u.k. out of the e.u. it was an historic day the decades he held a minority view but with presence exit he led the celebrations at the nation's departure. was. i made history i'm. ready to move in the movie history i was but the nation is far from united in joy at the move. e.u.
12:03 pm
supporters gathered outside the scottish parliament here in adams and in other parts of the u.k. there was sadness a majority of scots voted to stay in the e.u. but their voice is being ignored in westminster. i think it's because i'm a 62 percent of us fortitude and then in europe some are being dragged out against our will it's absolutely a disgrace. sorrow in brussels to him and in other cities on the continent young britons rallied their future less certain and their vision of a nation at home in europe seemingly defeated. i. think. if. the think you can even think to even think. rex it has exposed a huge. in british politics but the show of emotion and trying to listen in the
12:04 pm
u.k. on its point of departure from the e.u. indicates that the debate over its place in europe is far from settled. and joining me now is the mass with standing by in london where it is day one after brags that bear get what is the mood like on the streets there well sorrow these feelings that have been displayed last night these patriotic feelings by the brick city is who feel that they have finally broken free and overjoyed but also the sadness of the remain as to where are holding candlelight vigils here next to parliament square while the wreck city is we're celebrating these deep feelings are not going to go away i think it's a little bit like you are either for this one football team wolf or the other but there is no not much in between and for boris johnson to bring the country together it is going to be a big toss i brought you some newspapers also to give
12:05 pm
a flavor of what's going on the fruit bricks a daily express is gushing patriotically saying our time has come then the sun. that's also what. is looking more for it and saying make leave no it was so joining in with prime minister boris johnson's message of trying to move forward and bring the country together but indeed it's not an easy task for boris johnson and his government at all it is not an easy task indeed but you know he has promised to make brags that what he calls an incredible success so what are the next steps for the u k. he has a long to do list there is 1st of all their relationship with brussels he only has 11 months time to look forward look to the future a new free trade agreement with brussels a lot of experts say that this is not enough time and that there is still
12:06 pm
a risk that the u.k. will leave the european union with out india at the end of this so-called transition period which is going to last until the end of the year so there is still a huge danger that there will be huge economic consequences if that indeed happens too he has to work on that and he has to he has promised that he levels up the country say a lot of people in the north of england in particular have voted for greg said because they feel forgotten they feel somehow left behind and he has promised to put money into these regions huge infrastructure projects so there is a lot of work i had for boris johnson to do that and there's also a lot of a lot of work to be done because we have to say to him to heal the soul of this nation which has been so polarized by this issue does the prime minister appear to have a plan. he hasn't really given any details we know that a lot of the remain is the pro europeans are very bitter about still very bitter
12:07 pm
about all the laws in the e.u. campaign as they see it and also about the brutality with which is johnson has gotten rid of his enemies and of the pro europeans in his own party so yes there is a lot of work to do to get these people together and to really rally the old british you know. what the british always been good has been quite pragmatic and to get on with things so this is the best hope i think that johnson has at the moment mass in london thank you. well let's get a quick check now some other stories making news around the world police and she lay have fired water cannon and tear gas at anti-government protesters in the capital santiago protesters responded by throwing rocks at vehicles have been demonstrating for greater social equality since october. demonstrators in algeria
12:08 pm
have marked 50 consecutive weeks of protests against the ruling allowing the hill rock movements marches had drawn diminished crowds of recent weeks with friday's rallies a larger turnout calling for change and the removal of the army is a vote in politics. to the united states now where the senate has voted against hearing from witnesses in the impeachment trial of president donald trump senators voted $51.00 to $49.00 against the motion only 2 republican senators sided with the democratic members of the senate in an attempt to hear from witnesses including trump's former national security advisor and his defeat it paves way for trump's likely acquittal in a vote set for wednesday are there any senators in the chamber wishing to change his or her vote if not the eighty's or 49 the nays are 51 after 11 days of marathon arguments republican senators kerry
12:09 pm
democrats hopes of removing president trump from the white house the battle centered around whether or not to subpoena new evidence and witnesses including former national security adviser john bolton new revelations from his forthcoming book seem to corroborate the charges that the president abused his office for so political gain now i can speak. but with democrats in the minority in the 100 member senate their hopes of questioning bolton hinged on winning over a handful of moderate republicans that hold died even before friday's vote lisa murkowski announced. i carefully considered the need for additional witnesses and documents but ultimately decided that i will vote against considering motions to subpoena with republicans and willing to budge democrats were left fuming if my republican colleagues refused to even consider witnesses and documents in this trial this country is headed towards the greatest coverup since watergate each
12:10 pm
meant trumps defense argued the democrats had missed their chance by rushing the impeachment investigation through the house of representatives you've heard from a lot of witnesses the problem with the case the problem with their position is even with all of those witnesses it doesn't prove up an impeachable offense the articles fail. was closing arguments scheduled for monday republicans hate to have trouble quit it by wednesday bringing a swift end to what's been only just 30 pietschmann trial of a president in u.s. history. so let's put this into perspective now we're joined here in the studio by rachel rizzo she is a us political analyst welcome to the program thanks for joining us what do you see the message of this vote last night in the senate i mean i think the message is really that the president of the united states really has carte blanche to do
12:11 pm
whatever he wants and i think it's really concerning that the democrats couldn't even get the 4 senators they need to vote with the democrats to call witnesses and so i think it gives you a really good sense of where the republican party is right now it's the party of trump what does that say about the state of democracy in the country why i think this is a concern for everyone who cares about the u.s. constitution i mean the fact is the president used his office to pressure of foreign leader and i think the questions you have to ask are what message does this send to our allies and partners abroad and what message does this send to the united states public and future presidents so now we have this vote coming up on wednesday i mean this is all eyes are really on this moment because this is where the big decision is going to be made you know all the lists are expecting right now that that trump will in fact win this that this will be a favorable outcome for him everything else will be a surprise with absolutely everything else wouldn't just be a surprise it would be
12:12 pm
a shock so the democrats would need a super majority in the senate to vote to remove term from office that means that they'd have to get 20 senators to switch sides and vote to remove him and like i said before the fact that they couldn't even get the 4 senators they needed to call witnesses in the trial really gives you a sense of what to expect on wednesday and the fact is any sort of outcome besides an acquittal would be a huge. surprise for everyone and very very unlikely a massive defeat for the democrats it's a huge win it's a huge defeat for the democrats i mean i think that they probably knew from the beginning that you know given the state of the republican party the likelihood that the president would actually be removed from office was pretty slim but just to see where this has gone is you know this hasn't gone great for the dems in the beginning it doesn't bode well for the election certainly absolutely not and this is going to be really good news for trump going into the election he's going to use
12:13 pm
this to his advantage he's going to feel emboldened he's going to feel vindicated and he's going to use this to rally his base now the democrats are going to do the opposite they're going to say listen if you care about the future of this country if you care about democracy it's time to move transfer off from office and so this might end on wednesday the trial might end on wednesday but this is going to follow the whoever the democratic nominee is and president trump all the way into the november election partisan politics on full display during this impeachment trial of u.s. president donald trump rachel is with the analysis us political analyst joining us thank you thanks. well china says that the number of people infected with the new corona virus has topped 11000 on friday officials reported 45 deaths from the outbreak bringing the total to 259 and more countries are confirming cases including sweden russia and the u.k. now in germany a 5 year old child is believed to have contracted the virus from the parents
