hoping to call witnesses in president trump's impeachment trial are defeated in the senate clearing the way for trump's almost certain acquittal in the coming days. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program after 3 years of high stakes political drama since it voted to leave the european union britain is out of the block at the stroke of midnight brussels time the u.k. ended nearly half a century of membership in the e.u. but gregg's it is still not a done deal the 2 sides now embarking on an 11 month transition period and the difficult work of finding the terms of a new relationship. ringing in the changes a recording of big ben sit at the prime minister's residence in downing street just

up the road celebrations began at the britain's exit from the e.u. in parliament square with this passion but the country is still driven by this is something prime minister boris johnson try to counter with a positive message for the future. as the government my job is to bring this country together and take us what the most important thing to say tonight is that this is. but a beginning. but bracks it is like nigel for a long campaign to take the u.k. out of the e.u. set triumphalist tone. that i made history and. the rage is moving in there's 3 i think. as the day dawned on a new u.k. the newspaper headlines marked the moment in history and almost half a century of e.u. u.k.

corporation but the nation is far from united some voice their sense of loss it's a great tragedy. all my life i've been in your opinion my grandfather fought in wars in europe we thought that was all over we thought we would be one continent keys. in harmony and now it feels to sort out going to have a war that was a fearless peaceful as it should be while others felt for the vigor what some call freedom or excitement returning to the days before the e.u. . i feel absolutely delighted. and i feel that's probably my generation but if we live to move to push a place it's undeniable that breaks it has. a huge division in british politics but this show of emotion and tribalism in the u.k. on this the point of departure from the e.u. indicates that the debate over its place in europe is far from settled. and as this

video message projected on dover's white cliffs by pro remain pressure group led by don't put it there is even now hope that perhaps the u.k. might one day. get a quick check now of some of the stories making news around the world palestinian president mahmoud abbas has cut all ties with israel and the u.s. including security relations it follows washington's middle east peace plan where least this week which abbas and palestinians have rejected the plan proposes a palestinian state and recognition of israeli settlements in the occupied west bank. demonstrators in algeria have marked 50 consecutive weeks of protest against the ruling elite the hill rock movement's marches have drawn diminished crowds in recent weeks but friday's rallies saw a larger turnout calling for change and the removal of the army's role in politics

. u.s. secretary of state my pompei o has held talks with the president of fellow reuss alexander lukashenko in minsk washington is seeking to increase its influence in the former soviet republic at a time when relations between bella bruce and russia are strained pump aoe is the most senior u.s. official to visit the country in more than 2 decades. hj more countries are confirming cases of the new corona virus that has infected almost $12000.00 people in china and killed $259.00 those countries include sweden russia and the u.k. several countries have restricted travel to and from china in an effort to curb the outbreak many governments are also evacuating their citizens including sri lanka indonesia and germany a military plane bringing more than $100.00 people home is on its way to frankfurt . for more let's bring in correspondent simon young who is joining us here in the studio and simon many countries as we heard evacuating their citizens
4:06 pm
from china and now in germany to tell us a little bit more about this effort as you mentioned this german military air bus is on its way left. this same city at the center of this outbreak. leave this morning german time and it's been a little bit delayed it was due to land for refueling in most go but couldn't have the authority is didn't want to land there so that was done in helsinki instead. according to the latest information it should be pretty much coming into land pretty soon in frankfurt and of course the question really the purpose of this exercise is to bring these people back make sure they're out of danger the german health minister spawn as has been speaking today and he said that none of these people have so far been recognized as having any symptoms they don't believe there's any sick people on board but this is
4:07 pm
a precautionary measure and we can listen to a little bit more of what the health minister was saying. about some shoots in order to protect the evacuees themselves their families and also the german population it's important we ensure nobody is infected as the month. see it is. there is an incubation period of up to 2 weeks for this virus during which no symptoms yet feasible but in fiction may still be present in order to be able to exclude these quarantine is necessary during this period. ok so they will be heading toward quarantine but where exactly are they so this is a military base again this time about 100 kilometers from frankfurt and it's called buildings their accommodation block set up it's not previously being used but it is set up for this obviously being a military base it will be functional but i think they're saying comfortable enough there are $128.00 separate rooms there and the significance there 128 passengers
4:08 pm
we're told on this plane most of them about 100 of them of german nationality but the rest of their family members of different nationalities so they'll be kept there for a couple of weeks is the minister said and you know they'll be divided into groups so that if there are any signs of infection they've infection can be contained and obviously if that happens then that group of people would have to stay in quarantine a bit longer containment of the infection is already an issue in germany there are some confirmed cases out there that's right there are 7 confirmed cases so far but it's not a widespread outbreak all of these cases are connected with one company in bavaria a motor industry company which had a visit from a couple of its employees from china and so they all sat around the table a long meeting and i think that's how this infection has spread in that particular case those people are obviously being looked after the german government's overall

approach is to say any suspected cases must be reported want to be aware of what's going on and if anything we want to be cautious rather than on the cautious that's the posture at this time of the thank you senator. to the united states now where the senate has voted against hearing from witnesses in the impeachment trial of president donald trump senators voted $51.00 to $49.00 against the motion only 2 republican senators sided with a democratic member of the senate in an attempt to hear from witnesses including tom's former national security adviser a defeat paves the way for trump's likely acquittal in a vote set for wednesday or any senators in the chamber wishing to change his or her vote if not the yeas are 49 the nays are 51. just after 11 days of marathon arguments republican senators all but very democrats hopes of removing president trump from the white house the battle
4:10 pm
centered around whether or not to subpoena new evidence and witnesses including former national security adviser john bolton new revelations from his forthcoming book seem to corroborate the charges that the president abused his office for his own political games. but with democrats in the minority in the 100 member senate their hopes of questioning bolton hinged on winning over a handful of moderate republicans. that hold died even before friday's vote when lisa murkowski announced i carefully considered the need for additional witnesses in documents but ultimately decided that i will vote against considering motions to subpoena with republicans and willing to budge democrats were left fuming if my republican colleagues refused to even consider witnesses and documents in this trial this country is headed towards the greatest coverup since watergate
4:11 pm
trump's defense argued the democrats had missed their chance by rushing the impeachment investigation through the house of representatives. you've heard from a lot of witnesses the problem with the case. the problem with their position is even with all of those witnesses it doesn't prove. an impeachable offense the articles failed. with cancer arguments scheduled for monday republicans hope to have trump acquitted by wednesday bring in a swift good to what's been the lead to certain pietschmann trial of the president in u.s. history. so let's put this into perspective now we're joined here in the studio by rachel rizzo she is a us political analyst welcome to the program thanks for joining us what how do you see the message of this vote last night in the senate i mean i think the message is really that the president of the united states really has carte blanche to do whatever he wants and i think it's really concerning that the democrats couldn't
4:12 pm
even get the 4 senators they need to vote with the democrats to call witnesses and so i think it gives you a really good sense of where the republican party is right now it's the party of trump what does that say about the state of democracy in the country why i think this is a concern for everyone who cares about the u.s. constitution i mean the fact is the president used his office to pressure of foreign leader and i think the questions you have to ask are what message does this send to our allies and partners abroad and what message does this send to the united states public and future presidents so now we have this vote coming out once i mean this is all eyes are really on this moment because this is where the big decision is going to be made you know all the lists are expecting right now that trump will in fact win this that this will be a favorable outcome for him everything else would be a surprise when it absolutely everything else wouldn't just be a surprise it would be a shock so the democrats would need
4:13 pm
a super majority in the senate to vote to remove term from office that means that they'd have to get 20 senators to switch sides and vote to vote to remove him and like i said before the fact that they couldn't even get the 4 senators they needed to go. hall witnesses in the trial really gives you a sense of what to expect on wednesday and the fact is any sort of outcome besides an acquittal would be a huge surprise for everyone and very very unlikely massive defeat for the democrats it's a huge win it's a huge defeat for the democrats i mean i think that they probably knew from the beginning that you know given the state of the republican party the likelihood that the president would actually be removed from office was pretty slim but just to see where this has gone is you know this hasn't gone great for the dems in the beginning it doesn't bode well for the election certainly absolutely not and this is going to be really good news for trump going into the election he's going to use this to his advantage he's going to feel emboldened he's going to feel vindicated
4:14 pm
and he's going to use this to rally his base now the democrats are going to do the opposite they're going to say listen if you care about the future of this country if you care about democracy it's time to remove transfer off from office and so this might end on wednesday the trial might end on wednesday but this is going to follow the whoever the democratic nominee is and president trump all the way into the november election partisan politics on full display during this impeachment trial of u.s. president donald trump rachel is what the analysis of us political analyst joining us thank you thanks. well the weekend's going to see the action kicked off here in berlin on friday but there wasn't much to cheer in the capital as heritage and shock of played out in a drab and nil nil draw now care to coach your conclusions men tried to liven things up in the 2nd half by introducing record signing christophe. but the 23000000 year old man couldn't find a dream debut goal to break the deadlock results leave shaka in 6th place and

heritage down in 13. now it's the australian open where women's final where the american sophia kennedy stunned 2 time major winner garbin year muguruza to grab her 1st grand slam title can put immense pressure on the spaniard after.
