subscribe to my documentary. this is news live from berlin and it is day one of britain's future outside of the european union after night time celebrations among those who voted to leave the country finds on the morning after that the hardest part of brecht's it may be yet to come. also coming up more and more countries evacuate their nationals from china and made a global scramble to curb the spread of the new coronavirus plus 2 vote shy democrats hoping to call witnesses and president trump's impeachment trial are defeated in

the senate clearing the way for trunks almost certain acquittal in the coming days . i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program after years of high stakes political drama since it voted to leave the european union and britain is out of the block at the stroke of midnight brussels time the u.k. ended nearly half a century of membership in the e.u. but brags it is still not a done deal the 2 sides now embarking on an 11 month transition period and the difficult work of finding the terms of a deal relationship. ringing in the changes a recording of big ben bond in bret's it at the prime minister's residence in downing street just up the road celebrations began over britain's exit from the

e.u. in parliament square with this passion but the country is still britain by the sea something prime minister boris johnson try to counter with a positive message for the future. as the government my job is to bring this country together take us what the most important thing to say tonight is that this is not but the beginning of the bracks it is like nigel who fought a long campaign to take the u.k. out of the e.u. set triumphalist tone. i made history. of trade moving in there's 3 i think. as the day dawned on a new u.k. the newspaper headlines marked the moment in history and almost half a century of e.u. u.k. corporation but the nation is far from united some voice their sense of loss it's a great tragedy. for my life

a bit in your opinion my father my grandfather fortune was in europe we thought that was all over we thought we would be one continent peace. and harmony and now it feels to me that i can have a war that was a fearless peaceful as it should be while others felt for the vigor what some called freedom or excitement returning to the days before the e.u. . i feel absolutely delighted it's probably one city. and i feel that's probably peculiar to my generation but if we lived in this time i'd move to push english it's undeniable that bret's it has expired. a huge division in british politics but this show of emotion and trying to diss me in the u.k. on this the point of departure from the e.u. indicates that the debate over its place in europe is far from settled. and as this video message projected on dover's white cliffs by pro remain pressure group led by

don't put it there is even now hope that perhaps the u.k. might one day. of the quick check now some other stories making news around the world demonstrators in algeria have marked 50 consecutive weeks of protest against the ruling elite to hear rock movements marches have drawn diminished crowds in recent weeks but friday's rallies saw a larger turnout calling for change and the removal of the army and politics. u.s. secretary of state my from payless held talks with the president of shell in the us alexander lukashenko in minsk washington in seeking to increase the influence in the former soviet republic at a time when relations between belo reuss and russia are strained pale is the most senior u.s. official to visit the country in more than 2 decades. a turn now to the controversial middle east peace plan being proposed by u.s. president donald trump the plan is seen as favoring israel and on saturday it was
5:05 pm
rejected at a meeting of the arab league in cairo the palestinian president mahmoud abbas has gone further cutting all ties with israel and the united states including security relations the plan has also sparked protest among palestinians who also strongly rejected the plan proposes a palestinian state and recognition of israel said israeli settlements in the occupied west bank. let's bring in correspondent tanya kramer who's standing by with the latest now from jerusalem tanya how significant is this. well i think it is significant in the way that stopping the security coordination would change the situation on the ground in the occupied west bank now the threat or the warning off wanting to stop this kind of cordon nation this is one of the few tools i think the palestinian leadership has a kind of leverage. over the u.s.
5:06 pm
as well and that send so we have heard the palestinian president mahmoud abbas before threatening to stop security coordination so we have to wait and see whether this will be implemented right now but i also think what is significant today is the big support the palestinians got from this statement by the arab league the meeting of the foreign ministers in cairo and that show says not such a broad support among arab states because the initial reactions from individual arab states to the plan whereby that new to it but now this strong we reject this and what is this suspension of relations now tanya what is it likely to mean on the ground. well we're talking here about 2 different kind of relations on the one hand the palestinian leadership in ramallah has already cut of diplomatic ties with the trump administration back in december 2017 after the true celeb decision know
5:07 pm
what they're talking about now is to cut off also some of the security ties they had kept for example with the u.s. intelligence intelligence agencies on the other hand talking about the security coordination with israel this is a topic that's very controversial among palestinians there's a lot of public pressure for years already to stop that also by rival hamas because it's seen as you know supporting somehow the military occupation and the west bank so if they would go through this is certainly a very if for secure for this security establishment. trump has called this plan his vision for peace tanya why is it so unacceptable though to the palestinians well from palestinian point of few it takes more or less all the positions to israeli position so i mean there has not been much surprise
5:08 pm
because all the actions taken by the trump administration over the past 2 or rather 3 years have been in favor of israel now this plan falls actually if you read it it falls short of an independent sovereign a palestinian state that is what the palestinians of course aim for that wouldn't also have the whole of it is true so i'm asked the capital of their future state and on the other hand it would allow israel to annex parts of the occupied west bank town ukraine we're interested in thank you tanya whew hew. now to the united states where the senate has voted against hearing from witnesses in the impeachment trial of president doll trial senators voted $51.00 to $49.00 against the motion only 2 republican senators sided with the democratic member of the senate in an attempt to hear from witnesses including trump's former national security advisor the defeat paves the way for trump's likely acquittal and
5:09 pm
a vote set for wednesday are there any senators in the chamber wishing to change his or her vote if not the yeas are 49 the nays are 51. just after 11 days of marathon arguments republican senators all but very democrats hopes of removing president trump from the white house the battle centered around whether or not to subpoena new evidence and witnesses including former national security adviser john bolton new revelations from his forthcoming book seem to corroborate the charges that the president abused his office for his own political games. but with democrats in the minority in the 100 member senate their hopes of questioning bolton hinged on winning over a handful of moderate republicans. that hold died even before friday's vote when lisa murkowski announced i carefully considered the need for additional witnesses
5:10 pm
and documents but ultimately decided that i will vote against considering motions to subpoena with republicans and willing to budge democrats were left fuming if my republican colleagues refused to even consider witnesses and documents in this trial this country is headed towards the greatest coverup since watergate trumps defense argued that democrats had missed their chance by rushing the impeachment investigation through the house of representatives. you've heard from a lot of witnesses the problem with the case. the problem with their position is even with all of those witnesses it doesn't prove up an impeachable offense the articles fail. with closing arguments scheduled for monday republicans hope to have trump acquitted by wednesday bring in a swift end to what's been only the 3rd impeachment trial of a president in u.s.

history. now more countries are confirming cases of the new corona virus that has infected almost $12000.00 people in china and killed $259.00 those countries include sweden russia and the u.k. a military plane with more than 100 people on board has just landed in frankfurt these are the latest pictures from frankfurt airport germany is one of many countries that are evacuating their citizens from china in an effort to curb the outbreak the german government says there are no confirmed or suspected cases on board. of get more now we're joined here in the studio by our political correspondent simon young and simon as we've heard many countries evacuating their citizens from china and now we have germany doing the same in fact that plane we understand has just landed and so what happens next for the people on board so there's 124 people who have been brought back to germany by this military air bus and it's described as
5:12 pm
a precautionary measure none of those people 100 also german citizens and their families of various nations. none of them when they boarded the plane was showing any signs of coronavirus or being ill but they've come home in the 1st thing to do with them is to check whether or not they have developed any symptoms in the 12 hours or so they've been traveling and if that's the case they'll be taken straight to hospital otherwise they're going to be brought to a special facility where they can be kept in quarantine for a couple of weeks. do we know anything more about this you know where they exactly they're heading well it's a military base playschool gammas home about 100 kilometers from frankfurt where the plane landed and it's been set up specially to deal with this group so they'll be put in individual rooms they'll be kept as comfortable as is possible in a military base being looked after incidentally by volunteers and of course it'll
5:13 pm
be a stressful couple of weeks for them while they wait out that period this virus is to be about $10.00 to $12.00 days. because they won't be able to have meetings with any family members that they have not already waved and of course they don't know if there are about to get ill and the german health minister interest some of the sort time ago let's just have a listen to what he had to say about some shoots in order to protect the evacuees themselves their families and also the german population it's important we ensure nobody is infected in the month. it is. there is an incubation period of up to 2 weeks for these fires during which no symptoms are yet visible body infection may still be present in order to be able to exclude these quarantine is necessary joining this period which in the case of these individuals coming to germany now they will be quarantined but i want to talk with you separately because
5:14 pm
there are there are some confirmed cases however already in the country bring us up to date on the earth is so there are 7 confirmed cases but it's not a widespread outbreak because these are role of people connected with one particular company in bavaria this was a company a motor industry company that was had a visit from a couple of its employees from china and so it seems that they sat around and waiting table for a couple of hours and as a result they've this group anyway who ended up showing symptoms so you know it's just another example of the way that this disease can spread and the german government is saying it wants to be cautious and to take measures because of course at the moment in germany there isn't any sort of need for widespread along and the government is looking at every report it carries to make sure that people are given
