gassed. managed by from. coming to life. in a state of the union address president tells americans you've never had it so good the american adventure has only just begun and my fellow americans the best is yet to come. republicans cheer and chant 4 more years of the democrats speaker of the house sitting just behind the president makes

clear what she thinks the pizz speech leave life in washington also coming up coronavirus confirmed to cruise ship at least 10 people on the ship florentine off the coast of japan have tested positive for the credit virus all those $4000.00 people on board could be stuck on the ship for 2 more weeks for a passenger who dissent park in hong kong diagnosed with minors. and the rare moments when the children of live can just be children we visited an orphanage taking care of youngsters who've been of their homes as syrian government forces had bands on the last rebel school. hello i'm terry martin good to have you with us president donald trump has delivered this year's. state of the union address it was a speech celebrating
7:02 am
a wide range of the president's policies topped off at times with spectacle reminiscent of his reality t.v. background but the biggest issue not covered in the 80 minute speech impeachment trump opened the speech to congress and the u.s. public by saying he had ushered in an american comeback including a booming economy the president also touted his moves on a range of signature foreign policy issues including trade deals and pressuring nato allies to defense spending. so let's take a listen now to how the speech began 3 years ago we launched the great american comeback tonight i stand before you to share the incredible results jobs are booming incomes are so. poverty is plummeting. crime is falling confidence is surgery and our country is thriving and highly

respected again. we have team coverage of the state of the union speech joining me from capitol hill is our washington bureau chief alexander phenomena and with me here in the studio is reporter d.p. reporter william no glucotrol thank you to you. let's start with you presidents typically use the state of the union address to tout their own achievements what does trump seem to be most proud of. the u.s. economy president donald trump focused in his state of the union address on the u.s. economy praising his role in goshi new trade agreements and reducing regulations and when he talked about growing the economy about stock markets being
7:04 am
about the record low unemployment he made clear that he is taking credit for it and of course to democrats in the chamber and they disagreed and they protested and the atmosphere in the chamber was actually quite tense. well the campaign promise of course back during the last election was to make america great again his speech that he delivered on capitol hill seemed to say i've delivered on that promise but his term isn't over and he might very well get another one did the president give any indications of his policy priorities moving forward well as alexander said what he focus on the most is economy and that is where he's going forward because every indication is that the economy is doing well and people are doing better they're still not where they need to be but they're doing better whether he can really take credit for all that also as alexander mentioned is very much an open question partly yes partly no but he also wants to give
7:05 am
a little bit to everybody that was very clear in this speech is really his opening shot you might say in an official beginning to the 2020 campaign of his read of himself really really inserting himself into this he was you know attracting his base keeping his base with him by going after hard on immigration and guns a 2nd rights and also abortion the hot button cultural issues he was also attracting the working class i'm talking about health care which has broad support across party lines american voters want health care of some kind that's cheaper and more accessible and also talking about prison reform an educational opportunities which tends to poll very well with black americans so we're seeing trump trying to paint a very broad picture as he tries to attract voters in his 23 reelection campaign well we can't forget of course that this year's state of the union speech was taking place against a background of an impeachment trial with democrats trying to remove trial from office and the tensions between trump of the democratic house speaker nancy pelosi
7:06 am
were on display for everyone to see. just before his address the present trump parent rebuffed speaker pelosi attempts to shake hands with him and then just as the president is finish up finishing up his speech this extraordinary scene and suppose he's standing up and demonstrably ripping up her copy of the president stressed while he is standing in front of her the lectern many people including the white house interpreted as a deliberate sign of disrespect towards president trump. and i suppose he said in an interview that she ripped up her copy of the speech because she couldn't find one page with truth on it we know that washington is divided the country is divided ripping up the speech was hugely symbolic wasn't it it was quite symbolic she she went on to say it was the courteous thing to do for
7:07 am
what she called a manifesto of mistruths and let's not get bogged down in the the personality wars of trump and close it is as you know very symbolic it's also very. dangerous for the country let's not forget nancy pelosi is not just a democrat or any old congresswoman she is the speaker of the house the leader of democrats in the house the leader of congress of congress the lower house assets the 3rd in the line to the president were gone as a party the president the speaker of the house have to have some kind of communication some level of seeing eye to eye if there is an important if there's a military strike planned if there is some major policy about to be announced by the president the speaker the house is traditionally involved in those conversations that is privy to a lot of what the president is thinking on policy and fact they haven't spoken to each other stuck tobar is not a great sign for the united states being able to move forward on any number of issues hugely polarized there in washington alexandra pelosi did make
7:08 am
a very bold gesture there by tearing up that speech what did you make of it do you think it showed more results on the democrats' side or desperation. i would say result and i would also see is a very symbolic gesture of course. her ripping up her copy of the president's speech was criticized by the white house and also by a republican lawmakers who accused her or of dishonoring the chamber however we have to say that we couldn't expect this state of the union address to be a business see usual when we consider that we are seeing this we saw the state of the union address after 6 months of impeachment proceedings and only if you months before the next you asked presidential election or getting back to the speech itself president trump had
7:09 am
a lot to say about trade as part of his foreign policy agenda let's take a listen. on fair trade is perhaps the single biggest reason that i decided to run for president following nafta is adoption our nation lost one in 4 manufacturing jobs many politicians came and went pledging to change or replace nafta only to do so and then absolutely nothing happened but unlike so many who came before me i keep my promises we did our job. job done according to trump and xander the president obviously is happy with his own accomplishments concerning trade the economy and the stock market or american voters equally happy. well that's of course remains to be seen next november but of course we have to say that the president was successful negotiating new trade deals and new trade
7:10 am
agreement with mexico and canada however here critics say that this new deal replacing the old nafta deal is not very different from the old one and he is also making progress negotiating with china he just signed a new the 1st phase one the u.s. china deal however here we have to add that this is just the beginning because many issues that are controversial in the trade relations between china and the you as have to be resolved issues such as intellectual property property protection for transit technological technological transfers so there is still a lot of potential contentions contentious issues on the way to a real trade agreement between the u.s. and china ok well of course foreign trade is foreign policy staying with foreign
7:11 am
policy the president also talked about nato claiming to have convinced allies to increase spending defense spending here's how he put that we are also getting our allies finally to help pay their fair share very very proud of you should from other nato members by more than $400000000000.00 and the number of allies building their minimum obligations has more than doubled. well what do you think leaders on this side of the atlantic whether we're talking military leaders in nato or just heads of state heads of government what do you think they'll make of the president's speech any new messages for them oh i would say that no news is good news given a lot of what trump has said about his traditional allies over here on the european continent it should be noted of course that this this push to get nato allies to
7:12 am
increase defense spending give more commitments to nato went back to 2014 when obama was president there was broad agreement then at the nato summit to raise to this 2 percent limit and that's been steadily increasing since 2014 donald trump has really turned the screws on that to ensure that those budget commitments would be continued to met but that is something that predates him as many of these policies that he takes credit for now have he's building on a lot of the past despite him trying to or at least saying he's dismantling it and of course there's a long tradition of presidents taking credit for what their predecessors have done absolutely the center this is an election year of course we get a taste of how trump will approach his reelection bid. yes this was definitely an election speech and the fact that president trump focused on the economy is also very telling because this is his strongest arguments to get elected in his state of the union address to he addressed his face but he
7:13 am
was also trying to extend his base and it was very telling also very telling that he didn't mention 2020 democratic hopefuls but he addressed them by criticizing his democratic rivals for their alleged socialist policies and ideas. ok leave it there xandra xander from naaman in washington our washington bureau chief thank you very much and william no glue cropped the reporter in studio with us thank you both for your analysis. well earlier and after a day of chaos iowa democrats have finally begun releasing some results from monday's caucuses presidential hopeful peter a buddha chad is in the lead followed closely by bernie sanders with just over 60 percent of results announced the counting process was plagued with problems
7:14 am
including a faulty app that was supposed to make the tally faster and easier instead results are still delayed more than a day later the caucuses were the opening event in the 2020 electoral calendar democratic voters across the country will choose a nominee who's almost certain to face off against president all trump in november we still don't know when the full results from iowa will be. now at least 10 people on a cruise ship quarantined off the coast of japan have been confirmed positive for the corona virus they were tested after a passenger who disembarked in hong kong was diagnosed with the illness in hong kong itself medical workers began a 3rd day of strike action to fight try to force the government to seal the border with mainland china the territory was hit hard by the sars virus 18 years ago and the new coronavirus is fueling a long arm and anger. hong kong's health workers are angry they want the
