this is d.w. news live from berlin and in his state of the union address president trump tells americans you've never had it so good. the american adventure of patients only just begun and my fellow americans the best is yet to come. but the democrats speaker of the house is sitting just behind the president makes it clear what she thinks of his speech. also coming up out china likes the world to see its efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus and the reality body
2:01 pm
bags left lying near to patients who purport of the work of a brain video blogger and citizen journalist plus the fascination of abandoned buildings do look at it a new trend in photography that finds life and they decay as nature takes back its own. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program u.s. president donald trump has hailed what he called the great american comeback in his annual state of the union address to congress in a speech covering a wide range of issues he celebrated america's booming economy that's his main platform in this election year trump also touting his moves on a range of signature foreign policy issues including trade deals and pressuring nato allies to increase military spending the speech comes amid the backdrop of his
2:02 pm
impeachment trial in the senate. as don't know trump made his way to the podium it was clear he had the support of his republican party. but as they chanted for more years there was no escaping the fact that this hell since democratic controlled impeachment wasn't mentioned but president trump appeared to snub house speaker nancy pelosi the most powerful elected democrat by refusing to shake her hand. and this was to be his show 3 years ago we launched the great american comeback tonight i stand before you to share the incredible results jobs are booming incomes
2:03 pm
a story poverty is plummeting crime is falling confidence is surgery and our country is thriving and highly respected again. i from the economy to trade foreign policy to defense donald trump in short he was sent to stage america's enemies are on the run america's fortunes are on the rise in america's future is blazing bright. the years of economic decay are over. donald trump also had a few surprises up his sleeve. we'll take this procedure back to you. he called venezuela's opposition leader one why i don't know who was watching from the gallery the legitimate president of venezuela the best is yet to come
2:04 pm
thank you but this trauma drew to a close it was what was going on behind him that stole the show nancy pelosi ripping up his speech the bitch a feud between the 2 boiling over once again let's get more now on the speech to give us the european perspective we're joined by teri schultz and brussels welcome terry what do you think leaders on this side of the atlantic will make of his speech and whether any new messages there i think sarah that most european leaders woke up this morning probably a bit nervous about what might have been said in the state of the union because you know no matter what was previewed or released in early transcript or what they expected him to say you never know with in the middle of the speech president trump would break out and say he decided that you know he was going to impose 25 percent tariffs on european cars or quit nato war or cut off intelligence sharing because the europeans plan to use while way in 5 g.
2:05 pm
technology he's so unpredictable that not even his closest allies can say that's not going to happen so i think the fact that europe played a very very tiny role in this speech he didn't speak much about europe at all just one mention about nato probably left european leaders relieved that they don't have to deal with messes this morning coming out of the state of the union speech let's talk a little bit more about the foreign policy that he articulated because he talked about nato claiming to have convince allies to increase their defense spending but have a listen. we are also getting our allies finally to help pay their fair share of raise contributions from other nato members by more than $400000000000.00 and the number of allies meeting their minimum obligation has more than doubled he is sending a message to nato allies to europe here your reaction terry he is sending a message but it's the same message that they've been hearing for years and it
2:06 pm
actually was much softer than normal i mean he has sometimes used this defense spending speech to claim that you know germany is captive of russia and all kinds of other other accusations but this time he simply misstated in the way he normally mis states what's going on with nato defense spending and that is that these aren't contributions from nato allies this is defense spending this is spending on their own militaries and in fact it is true that under trump pressure nato allies have spent more faster than they might have otherwise but it didn't start with him it started in 2014 before he came to office so this is something that nato allies have heard before and again it wasn't as critical as he usually is so i think i think european leaders are probably relieved so given that terry i mean given that assessment what do you think european leaders need to take away now from the speech . it is important and i'm certain that they all are parsing the speech looking for
2:07 pm
clues to china policy mideast policy afghanistan policy all of these things that they very much need to keep their fingers on the pulse of u.s. u.s. intentions so it's not that the speech is not important it's just that you're didn't play a leading role in any of it and i think that this very much a speaks to the fact that this is an election year and that's something that everyone on this side of the atlantic is keeping such a close eye on it's no secret that europeans would likely prefer to see another leader someone with whom they could get a fresh start and perhaps have better relations but this speech is being watched for the popularity among the public and to see if it truly is it has this lays out a president reelection campaign teri schultz with a view from brussels thank you terry. a good quick check of some other stories making news around the world turkish authorities say that at least 21 people have

not independent make. we are a phase where it's an epidemic. and we will try to distinguish the transmission in each of these sites hong kong wants to show it serious about stemming the spread of the virus the territories to crew ship terminals will soon be shut down as part of its response to the crisis. and for more we go to charlotte charleston pil our correspondent in hong kong who is at the harbor there and charlotte and we'd like to ask you what is happening with the passengers on board that quarantined cruise ship because we heard that there was a man taken from the hong kong cruise liner into the ambulance after a coronavirus check. well this is clearly going to be a very anxious wait for the passengers on board this cruise liners they're facing an additional extra nights now quarantine in this cruise ship now what they don't
2:13 pm
know at this stage is exactly how long they will be there authorities have not said how many more nights they could be facing here. but we do know is that several of the crew members were displaying symptoms they've now been taken off the ship and are being tested for that new coronavirus we also know that on board this ship on a previous trip there was 3 people from mainland china who were then diagnosed with the new coronavirus and it is that which is causing so much concern for people on board the ship every now and then we hear announcements telling people to thanking people for their patience saying it's not clear when they'll be allowed to disembark that testing is being carried out every now and then people coming onto the balconies just behind me just to have a look around just to see what's going on looking at the press pack reporting as the situation unfolds so what is the mood there given all about charlotte and how
2:14 pm
much of a risk is hong kong really facing from the coronavirus. well everybody here has very painful memories of the saw as far as back in 2003 which almost 300 people lost their lives in a in a densely populated city kong with such close ties to mainland china this is an area where this virus could spread very quickly and of course everybody knows that it could take up to 2 weeks before people displaced sentence that is causing a great deal of war here that is exactly why i carry am encourage people today to stay at home to not go out unless necessary to wear face masks while people that we've spoken to say that they ideally want all of the borders with mainland china now to be close it's for that reason the medical staff are on strike at the moment demanding just that saying hong kong needs to take as many preventative measures as possible to stop the spread of this virus carry lamb and mounting today further
2:15 pm
