donald trump also had a few surprises up his sleeve. please take this message back to us. he called venezuela's opposition the deaf one why don't know who was watching from the gallery the legitimate president of venezuela the best is yet to come thank you but his trauma drew to a close it was what was going on behind him that stole the show nancy pelosi ripping up his speech the bitter feud between the 2 boiling over once again. while president trumper frayne from talking about impeachment and not bringing it up at all but it's on everyone's mind with a vote in the senate taking place today on whether to remove him from office earlier had the chance to catch up with our correspondent in washington d.c. publicly ileus and i began by asking him whether was expecting to be exonerated.

well 1st it was somewhat of a surprise that he did stick to script because the president not to stick to script but it is pretty clear that he is going to be found not guilty or he won't he won't be impeached for these. pietschmann articles or he won't be found guilty in the stroke trial i should say and the senior republicans have stood behind him despite coming out saying that he didn't act appropriately that some senior republicans but he will be cleared and the question is really next is how it's going to impact him among republicans and democrats in this election year will it have an impact on them will it mobilize democrats to go out and vote later this year and you know really what are the feelings among republicans heading into the election in november so of course this year there are many questions left unanswered from this i don't think it's the end in many respects of the impact of what this impeachment

to an election here in germany that is sending shock waves through the political landscape for the 1st time to mainstream parties have joined forces with the far right to elect a regional leader tomas kemah here a politician from the pro business free democrats was elected state premier of thuringia with the help from the conservative c.d.u. and the a.v. well until today germany's mainstream parties have long refused any cooperation with the anti migrant anti e.u. party. even thomas kennedy seemed dumbfounded by his election as the ranges state premier last fall his business friendly free democratic party had barely managed to top the 5 percent hurdle his victory was secured with votes from the far right alternative for germany party. that's been met with shock by parties that led to

previous state government. because this is this is a rupture of the political landscape the mainstream conservative parties the christian democrats and the free democrats have forged a coalition with a group led by fascists you could see this was a coordinated maneuver for the incan chemical only entered the race in the 3rd round of voting the previous state premier. had lost twice as did his opponent coast of kenya a rural mayor who had been appointed by the far right can afford to emerge from the 3rd round without any votes those who supported him in the 1st 2 rounds apparently voted for chemical the 3rd time around but now he faces major challenges the new state leader has no platform and no team so he will not work with the state leader elected with help from the. period and. it's the end of the term for germany's 1st ever left party state premier. and he's still in shock. and so are

a lot of people in the political establishment they're also in shock let's find out why exactly our chief political correspondent linda crane is tracking this story very closely why is this being described as a political earthquake here in germany belinda. well 1st of all because all forms of political cooperation with the far right if the have until now been viewed as politically taboo and they've been viewed that way also by the business friendly free democrats the new state premiers own party and by the christian democrats unglue medical's party and yet now these very 2 parties mainstream parties appear to have coordinated their voting in the 3rd round with the far right which suddenly deserted its own candidate on mass to support mr cameras in doing so the 2 mainstream parties lend a particularly rabid branch of the a.f.d.
6:13 pm
party an air of legitimacy and there's a 2nd reason as well which is that mr cameron represents a party that barely scraped into the state parliament just barely breaking the 5 percent hurdle so he now would be heading up the state government many voters in through india will surely be saying and that's democracy and that's one reason why we are now hearing politicians at national level including paul syriac the general secretary of the c.d.u. saying it is time for new elections in let's listen. it didn't stim and relying on votes over v.a. if that's no basis for a stable government that is no basis for a mainstream politics let me be very clear about that the city use will not produce a paid in a government that rests on a foundation of a decent point the best thing for it to reinjure would be fresh elections. so
6:14 pm
malayan that what happens next if the engine doesn't hold new elections are we likely to see the a of d. join the state government well we are hearing important voices calling for those new elections but if they don't occur no mr cameron is saying that as premier he absolutely will not govern with the day he's quite adamant on that point and in fact his preferred coalition partners would be the christian democrats the s.p.d. and the greens nonetheless it is logical to ask what the far right would be looking for in return for having helped him get into office for having loaned him their support and if his minority coalition proved unstable would a newly emboldened far right possibly flex its muscles once again those are key questions now as this goes forward chief political correspondent linda crane
