questions about what china is telling the world a blogger and citizen journalist who says beijing is not being honest about his efforts to fight the disease and he says he has the video to prove it plus breaking political taboo here in germany for the 1st time 2 of the country's main street parties have teamed up with the far right if deep ours to elect a regional leader. it's good to have you with us we begin with a plane crash in turkey a plane carrying $177.00 people has crashed into a field and broken apart after skidding off a runway at an airport in istanbul miraculously turkish authorities say there are no food. but now at least 120 people have been reported injured some passengers
8:02 pm
were able to escape from the wreckage of the pegasus airlines aircraft themselves emergency crews evacuated us. are going to get the latest now jones he is on the story for us and is deb or good evening to you dorian so what more can you tell us i mean are there still passengers there trying to get away from that plane well according to local media reports all the passengers have now been removed from the plane old oh we do have images still of the rescue workers still combing through the the broken plane that they break into 3 parts we understand that says people are still being taken to nearby hospitals clothing to the gulf over $120.00 people now in hospital cover media reports none of believe most believed to be in serious condition although there are reports suggesting that the pilot copilot in
8:03 pm
a serious way it is remarkable though that no one was killed given the fact that the images that are coming out across social media of the plane hitting the runway and appearing to be on fire and all the pictures of each of the fuselage it cell phone thought that was put out by rescue workers despite those images it does appear that no one has been killed near where we're looking at live pictures right now dorian of what remains of the plate it is a miracle that people were able to walk away from. talk about what we know about a possible calls for this crash i mean we understand that the weather at the time was not favorable. absolutely istanbul is in the grip of a winter storm for just the strong winds driving rain icy rain very difficult flying conditions according to the governor the plane coming in to land dropped something between 30 and 40 meters heating the runway very hard and there were
8:04 pm
major problems for the plane decelerating images show that one of the engines appeared to be on fire as it went along the runway it careered off the runway breaking into 3 parts and then flipping over the minister of transport says that according to traffic control recalled records the earlier part of that was coming to land a very very strong tailwinds making landing extremely difficult so it does appear that the weather is a major factor in these this crash but it is still very early days of calls and dorian we understand that this accident comes just a month after another pegasus plane skidded off the runway in istanbul at the same airport there were no deaths or injuries in that incident that happened on january 7th but doesn't this 2nd accident now bring the safety of this airline this is a low cost airline doesn't it bring that safety into question. well there are similarities for sure and again the weather bad weather was blamed on
8:05 pm
that incident although it wasn't as serious as this one the plane was remained intact but pegasus airlines even though it is a low cost airline is has a very good safety record it says has new planes has a good record of the kind of pilots that you operate this is seen as a very successful and very profitable operation and up until now there hasn't really been any questions on its safety record that given the fact that we've had 2 very similar incidents in the space of a month will undoubtedly there will be scrutiny on the allies and also the airport itself which is running at nearly 100 percent capacity istanbul is a very important center for planes and they sampled is extremely busy so there will be questions there about the way the plane airport is being run. jones with the latest on that crash at an airport in istanbul dorian thank you. well staying in turkey officials are dealing at this moment with another disaster at

a vindication for the democrats and house speaker nancy pelosi the trial was a travesty with republicans in the majority the outcome was never really in doubt their leader in the senate mitch mcconnell made it clear at the start he would not be impartial and that this was a political process democrats argued exactly the opposite it's not personal it's not political it's not partisan it's patriotic. the house of representatives told the senate to try the president on 2 charges 1st abuse of power they said chum pressured ukrainian president brought to me as a lenski for dirt on a political rival using military aid as a bargaining chip. the 2nd charge or article of impeachment was obstruction of congress this for blocking testimony and documents sought during the house investigation some republican senators called trump's actions improper but echoed

his lawyers saying there wasn't enough to remove him from office it doesn't prove up an impeachable offense the articles fail. a senate vote last week against calling witnesses meant a swift tends to the process democrats wanted to coach arms form a national security adviser john bolton is a published book reportedly backs up the charges that the president abused his office for political gain. defense said the people should get the last word in the election this november most polls show fotis evenly split on whether or not trump should have been impeached and removed from office as election day approaches both sides say the impeachment trial solidifies day convictions. well for more now i'm joined here at the big table by u.s. politics analyst nicole rand verge she is with the german council of foreign relations
8:11 pm
decodes good to see you again so we've got this pivotal this verdict is going to be here today on today and what's interesting is that we even have republican senators saying yes trump is guilty as charged what he did was shameful but they will not vote to convict how do you explain that to the rest of the world it's difficult to explain that. the republicans have not changed their mind i mean they consider the whole process as something inappropriate at this time and then not convinced by him the evidence that has been laid down so and they will vote the way they announced it and the way it was clear for many weeks so we don't we don't see a change of mind even after the evidence was that they vote that there was some wrongdoing and what also will not change the fact that he is he remains impeached president as the speaker of the house nancy pelosi said he'll always be an
8:12 pm
impeached president regardless of the conviction or acquittal today will that be a stain on him as he heads for reelection in november it will be definite in. good for his goal because such a stain stays on him but more importantly as well it influenced the way people vote and we're looking at a very small percentage of people who are in the size of those who would vote for him with vote for him with or without the the impeachment discussion of those who are not when not shamed they'll pinion but this very small group might now sing differently about the president president and this is the group. in the election campaign will matter the most we're getting breaking news right now the u.s. senator from the state of utah mitt romney will reportedly vote to convict trump so here you have one of the republicans in the senate saying that he will vote to convict and have the president removed but still the numbers are not there of
8:13 pm
course for the majority that is required there the 2 thirds majority. let's look at what's happening this week we've got this upcoming election that we talk about that event but we've also seen what happened in iowa with the our iowa caucus the debacle there with the results and still not being completely out we've got good poll numbers for trial. is are things looking up for trump despite. the impeachment word well he seems to be very much at ease with himself 1st of all because. somehow the show went and an organized democratic party or at least in an all going to group off a possible challenger is so he must be quite satisfied with that and in his state of the union speech he elaborated on the successes off. of his governance and find that even though he accentuated some of the numbers since
8:14 pm
talking about the economy which is doing better than you know it has been many years it's not quite true its top i think 2.9 percent it's going a little down under clinton it was more than 4 percent except the rating but from this point a few it's a good start into this year which will be very important for the election what about what we saw in the book in my state of the union address we had the speaker of the health committee pollution he she offered to him to the president to shake us here and he ignored her that at the end of his speech we saw. they're ripping the text of the president's speech for all the world just see what does this tell us i mean this is this is really palpable political division is about as bad as they get i totally agree because it shows not only that the whole country is divided but it shows that the political. the political division is very clear in

the house and in the senate and. it also has so much drama to it that one should wonder how you know on the working level people have will cooperate so most likely there will not much happening on the legislative side not elections because there has to be an agreement with the majority in the house of the democrats yeah exactly for any legislation to be passed that is true to the corridor with the german council of foreign relations to go as always we appreciate your insights thank you thank you. well known to china says that the number of people infected by the new strain of the corona virus has topped 24 hours and almost 500 have died several cities in china are on lockdown notably the city where the virus was 1st detected. efforts are being made there to test and treat patients but it seems that not all is going as smoothly as the chinese government wants its people and the

associations are on high end as well. things looked rather different in the run up to last year's grand prix but plans for this year's event may now be up in smoke. the shanghai sports general association has instructed all sporting bodies to suspend events until the coronavirus strait is over formula one bosses will meet this week to discuss the viability of the race which is scheduled to take place in april but with athletics and formula events elsewhere in the country already having being cooled off and the coronavirus death toll rising to shanghai growing 3 looks in serious doubt. here in germany that is sending shock waves across the country for the 1st time to mainstream parties have joined forces with the far right party to elect a regional leader thomas

a politician from the pro business 3 democrats was elected for mayor of the eastern state of turin jia with the help from the conservative c.d.u. and the f.t. until today germany's mainstream parties have long refused any cooperation with the anti migrant anti e.u. party. yes even thomas kennedy seemed dumbfounded by his selection as the range of state premier last fall his business friendly free democratic party had barely managed to top the 5 percent hurdle his victory was secured with votes from the far right alternative for germany party. that's been met with shock by parties that lead to previous state government. is this is this is a rupture of the political landscape the mainstream conservative parties the christian democrats and the free democrats have forged a coalition with a group led by fascists you could see this was a coordinated maneuver. chemical only entered the race in the 3rd round of voting
8:20 pm
the previous state premier. had lost twice as did his opponent christophe kinda fatah a rural mayor who had been appointed by the far right kinda fatah emerged from the 3rd round without any votes those who supported him in the 1st 2 rounds apparently voted for a candidate the 3rd time around but now he faces major challenges the new state leader has no platform and no team so he will not work with the state leader elected with help from the far right it's a good period and it's the end of the term for germany's 1st ever left party state premier. and he's still in shock. we want to bring in our chief political correspondent melinda crane good evening to you did this. while. set off a minor political earthquake here in germany. that's right well 1st of all
8:21 pm
because germany's mainstream political parties until now have considered any form of cooperation with the right wing a.f.d. to be off limits politically taboo and that includes both the chancellors christian democrats and the business friendly free democrats mr kennedy's party now suddenly those 2 parties appear to have coordinated their 3rd round voting today with the far right party the f.t. and i must say that the chapter into ringing is a particularly rabid far right chapter so by doing so these mainstream parties have lent an aura of legitimacy to the a.f.d. party and they also open themselves up to questions about what the f.d.a. might be expecting in return that's reason number one reason number 2 mr cameron represents a party that barely scraped into the regional parliament and which barely made the

5 percent vote hurdle so many through the region voters will be asking is it to mock received that he now would lead the state government and for that reason we are hearing a lot of calls for the state told the elections and that's very good point to be the decision this vote also has to implications at the national level the social democrats who are in a coalition government with the conservative c.d.u. that's the party of the german chancellor angela merkel they are very upset about what has happened in that the cd you saw i did with the far right do you want you to listen to part of what the s.p.d. chairwoman said today. you know everyone who ran against the former state premiers knew they would have to rely on votes from the far right and whoever does that is distancing himself from democratic principles. so. we can't really underestimate here the potential is there a new crisis brewing now in germany's grand coalition government. well her
8:23 pm
counterparts in the christian democratic party at national level were very very quick to mirror those sentiments and to castigate the local branch of the c.d.'s you for breaching the taboo that i mentioned in fact the head of the c.d.u. of the defense minister and the great comic con said that this is a bad day for to ring dia and a bad day for germany she called for new elections in the state and so did the general secretary of the federal party the c.d.u. and the main question though is rather they will be heard by the regional party because in fact it said this evening that it's not inclined to follow their recommendations that very much makes it looks look like the national say to you doesn't have the local party under control and that certainly will prove a bone of contention in the coalition all right our chief political correspondent
