9:02 pm
to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and around the world well we begin tonight with what could very well be the last chapter in donald trump's impeachment saga in about one hour from now on capitol hill lawmakers in the republican controlled senate are expected to acquit the u.s. president in his impeachment trial trump is charged with abusing his power by withholding military aid to ukraine in exchange for dirt on democratic presidential candidate joe by today's vote will campaign historic intensely partisan trial that appears to only have hardened the country's political divisions for donald trump it's a vindication for the democrats and house speaker nancy pelosi the trial was a travesty with republicans in the majority the outcome was never really and doubt that leader in the senate mitch mcconnell made it clear at the stoute he would not be impartial and that this was a political process democrats argued exactly the opposite it's not personal it's
9:03 pm
not political it's not partisan it's patriotic the house of representatives told the senate to try the president to challenge its 1st abuse of power they said chum pressured ukrainian president brought to me as a lenski on a political rival using military aid as a bargaining chip the 2nd challenge or article of impeachment was obstruction of congress basis for blocking testimony and documents in the house investigation some republican senators called chumps actions improper but echoed his lawyers saying that wasn't enough to remove him from office it doesn't prove up an impeachable offense the articles fail. a senate vote last week against calling witnesses meant a swift ends to the process democrats wanted to cool chums form a national security adviser john bolton is
9:04 pm
a published book reportedly backs up the charges that the president abused his office for political gain. defense said the people should get the last word in the election this november most polls show photos evenly split on whether one should have been impeached and removed from office as election day approaches both sides say the impeachment trial solidifies de convictions. and for more on what is about to happen on capitol hill i'm joined here in the studio by my colleague no glue crofts so we have been here we're finally we're here we've been all morning to see things in for a long time now and it looks like the president is going to be cleared people around the world are looking at this and they're asking bill if he's going to be cleared the most was the whole impeachment process for one thing i think it's important to send about american law and how the american justice system in this
9:05 pm
case a political system works is it had comes out to a lot of interpretation of the law it comes down to a lot of precedent and past experience which gives lawmakers and in other cases judges a lot of leeway to make a decision if something is legal or not something was appropriate enough or not or something was was criminal or not and that's where we see democrats or republicans coming down on looking at the same set of facts they're not being a concrete law saying yes or no and giving senators the chance to interpret it themselves based on various historical precedents and i think that something is very important to look at was other countries such as germany where most law is very concretely written down and you just look at say well legal not legal and that's a very important distinction also to say that well this is a foregone conclusion why do it all people get acquitted all the time in court. laws on a regular everyday basis normal people are not talking about presidents that doesn't mean there should be a criminal justice system and also lots of evidence has come out to show and
9:06 pm
suggest strongly just trump's wrongdoing ethical wrongdoing in this is something that voters can take with them to the polls and consider in voting for trump or not that's right maybe maybe the election of him but some would say is the extension of impeachment if you will it has not been strictly partisan for example tonight the u.s. senator from utah mitt romney he's a republican saying he will vote to convict the president republican let's not forget the republican nominee against barack obama 2012 so certainly no love lost between democrats and mitt romney that's absolutely correct and he said it he said it best where this is not only about politics and policy he said i agree with 80 percent of what donald trump wants to get done in this country but this case rises above all that and it would be against his constitutional duty against what he says is a profoundly religious man it's a against his conviction with god to acquit donald trump although he is one of the senators who is not worried about being real that is one thing not up for
9:07 pm
reelection actually and i was mentioning he actually flipped one of the republican arguments on its side as republicans and saying we don't need to impeach donald trump voters will decide that he said well 1st of all the constitution says it's our job not the voter's job to decide impeachment and 2 it's not going to be the voters judging the president is going to be voters judging us senators not him specifically as you mentioned he's not up for reelection right but in the most republicans a majority of republicans are up for election and old come down to whether voters think the republicans the majority of republicans were going to vote to acquit did the right thing or not come november and speaking of elections what we just saw monday in iowa was the iowa caucus you know we're still seeing we still don't have all the results from from the election it's the 1st election in the process to select a democratic nominee to challenge donald trump. we've had a shock a surprise here we've got mayor pete from indiana right now in 1st place let's make very clear he's 1st place in terms of the delegates the iowa results are very
9:08 pm
complicated this year and they're always complicated but more so this year because we're also learning about who got the raw popular vote in 2 rounds of voting and bernie sanders is quite a bit in the lead i think about $3000.00 votes at the moment in terms of actual people voting but the way the delegates get a proportion but a judge is in the lead for delegates so we're really seeing who has the popular support either way it's very interesting that i when democrats basically split their vote between someone consider a fairly moderate if not even slightly conservative democrat and booted judge and then a quite left wing democrat in bernie sanders so we're seeing that that schizophrenia that that that in decisiveness among them are going to join others also you know being able to be in 1st place at least what we know tonight and to put. it to time by term vice president in 4th place no one would have i detected i think that showing that joe biden really is the hillary clinton 2020 he is the establishment candidate he is who the party things we need a name we need someone who's been around and biden has often biden in the way
9:09 pm
hillary clinton seems well because of my experience i almost in a way deserve to be president and i would voters and many democrats are saying but we're not really enthusiastic about you last night quickly before we run out of time the state of the union address there was this show of no love lost between the us president and us speaker of the house losing palosi definitely and i think we should get beyond the personality she has a personality fight here but we should see this as the fact that nancy pelosi is not just a democrat or does any of congresswoman she is 3rd in the line of the president traditionally the speaker of the house has to have some kind of close working relation with the president regardless of party on policy on major issues of national import national security for example and if they're not talking that spells some very dangerous things but we're not going to be and they're not shaking hands either definitely not when they were blue cross as always we thank you thanks frank. our now to stamboul a plane carrying $177.00 people has crashed into a field and broken apart after skidding off a runway at an airport in istanbul the turkish authorities say that there were no

fatalities but at least 139 people have been injured some passengers were able to escape from the wreckage of the pegasus airlines aircraft simply by walking away and were just cruise evacuated others. now jones he is on the story for us and is double good evening to you dorian so what more can you tell us i mean are there still passengers there trying to get away from that plane well according to local media reports all the passengers have now been removed from the plane old oh we do have images still of the rescue workers still combing through the the broken plane that they break into 3 parts we understand that says people are still being taken to nearby hospitals quoting to the governor over 120 people all now in hospital although quoting to other media polls none of believe most believed to be in serious
9:11 pm
condition although there are reports suggesting that a pilot copilot in a serious way it is remarkable though that no one was killed given the fact that the images that are coming out across social media with the plane hitting the runway and appearing to be on fire and all the pictures of each of the fuselage itself on thought that was put out by rescue workers despite those images it does appear that no one has been killed here when we're looking at live pictures right now dorian of what remains of the plate it is a miracle that people were able to walk away from let's talk about what we know about the possible calls for this crash i mean we understand that the weather at the time was not favorable. absolutely istanbul is in the grip of a winter storm for the strong winds driving right icy rain very difficult flying conditions according to the governor the plane coming in to land drop something
9:12 pm
between 30 and 40 meters heating the runway very hard and then one major problem for the plane decelerating images show that of one of the engines that paid to be on fire as it went along the runway he careered off the runway breaking into 3 parts and then flipping over the minister of transport says that according to traffic control recall the earlier part of that was coming to land want a very very strong tailwinds making landing extremely difficult so it does appear that the weather is a major factor in these this crash but it is still very early days of calls and dorian we understand that this accident comes just a month after another pegasus plane skidded off the runway in istanbul at the same airport there were no deaths or injuries in that incident that happened on january 7th but doesn't this 2nd accident now bring the safety of this airline this is a low cost airline doesn't it bring that safety into question. well
9:13 pm
there are similarities for sure and again the weather bad weather was blamed on. incident although it wasn't a serious of cis one of the plane was remained intact but pegasus airlines even though it is a low cost airline is has a very good safety record it says has new planes has a good record of the kind of pilots to operate this is seen as a very successful and very profitable operation and up until now there hasn't really been any questions on its safety record but given the fact that we've had 2 very similar incidents in the space of a month will undoubtedly there will be scrutiny only ally and also the airport itself which is running at nearly 100 percent capacity istanbul is a very important center for planes and they sampled is extremely busy so there will be questions there about the way the plane airport is being run. jones with the latest on that crash at an airport in istanbul dorian thank you. here's some of the

connecting climate change to her students. we're now into an election here in germany that is sitting shock waves across the country for the 1st time ever to mainstream political parties have joined forces with the far right party to elect a regional leader thomas a politician from the pro business free democrats was elected premier of the eastern state of turin jia with the help from the conservative c.d.u. party that's the german chancellor's party and the far right. now until today germany's mainstream parties had long refused any cooperation with the anti migrant anti e.u. . even thomas kennedy seemed dumbfounded by his election as the ranges state premier last fall his business friendly free democratic party had barely managed to top the 5 percent hurdle his victory was secured with votes from
9:20 pm
the far right alternative for germany party that's been met with shock by parties that lead to previous state government. from which is this is this is a rupture of the political landscape the mainstream conservative parties the christian democrats and the free democrats have forged a coalition with a group led by fascists you could see this was a coordinated maneuver. chemical only entered the race in the 3rd round of voting the previous state premier. had lost twice as did his opponent coast of kenya a rural mayor who had been appointed by the far right kinda fatah emerged from the 3rd round without any votes those who supported him in the 1st 2 rounds apparently voted for a candidate the 3rd time around but now he faces major challenges the new state leader has no platform and no team so he will not work with the state leader elected with help from the period and it's the end of the term for germany's 1st
9:21 pm
ever left party state premier. and he's still in shock. we want to bring in our chief political correspondent. this. political earthquake here in germany. that's right well 1st of all because germany's mainstream political parties until now have considered any form of cooperation with the right wing a.f.d. to be off limits politically taboo and that includes both the chancellors christian democrats and the business friendly free democrats mr cameron party now suddenly those 2 parties appear to have coordinated their 3rd round voting today with the far right party the f.t. and i must say that the chapter into ringing is a particularly rabid far right chapter so by doing so these mainstream parties have
9:22 pm
lent an aura of legitimacy to the a.f.d. party and they also open themselves up to questions about what the a.f.p. might be expecting in return that's reason number one reason number 2 mr cameron represents a party that barely scraped into the regional parliament and which barely made the 5 percent vote hurdle so many through the region voters will be asking is it democracy that he now would lead the state government and for that reason we are hearing a lot of calls for the state told the elections and that's a very good point to be in the decision this vote also has implications at the national level the social democrats who are in a coalition government with the conservative c.d.u. that's the party of german chancellor angela merkel they are very upset about what has happened in that the cd you saw i did with the far right i want you to listen to part of what the s.p.d.
9:23 pm
chairwoman said today. you know everyone who ran against the former state premiers knew they would have to rely on votes from the far right and whoever does that is distancing himself from democratic principles. so we can't really underestimate here the potential is there a new crisis brewing now in germany's grand coalition government. well her counterparts in the christian democratic party at national level were very very quick to him mirror those sentiments and to castigate the local branch of the c.d.'s you for breaching the taboo that i mentioned in fact the head of the c.d.u. of the defense minister and the great comic con said that this is a bad day for to ring dia and a bad day for germany she called for new elections in the state and so did the general secretary of the federal party the c.d.u.
9:24 pm
and the main question though is whether they will be heard by the regional party because in fact it's said that this evening that it's not inclined to follow their recommendations that very much makes it looks look like the national say to you doesn't have the local party under control and that certainly will prove a bone of contention in the coalition all right our chief political correspondent melinda cream with the latest here on this political taboo in germany well in the thank you or we hear a lot about climate change deniers what we know about climate change teachers in northeastern england the goal is to be the 1st in the world to have a climate change teacher in every school and for the curriculum there to be recognized by the un take a look. a science experiment a 6th grade class in the northern english town of hexham tries making fire with different types of fuel the teacher meryl botch elder asks her pupils the
