3:00 pm
this is deja vu news live from berlin german politics shaken to the core over a far right scandal the conservative and liberal parties under huge pressure over their collaboration with extremists in the eastern state of turin chief. meanwhile chancellor angela merkel keeps the wary eye on developments at home while on a visit to forge economic ties in angola. and china mourns the whistleblower who 1st reported the corona virus outbreak the government has slammed over its treatment of the doctor who was widely viewed as
3:01 pm
a hero. i'm serious i was gonna it's good to have you with us here in berlin the leaders of chess on conservative c.d.u. party have been holding crisis talks to deal with the fallout from its collaboration with the far right in an unprecedented move the c.d.u. in the eastern state of the joined forces with the right wing populist a.f.d. to elect a new state premier well that decision has been condemned by political leaders across germany and the new premier has been forced to announce his intention to resign. well c.d.u. party leader on a good come colin powell has just given a short press conference following that crisis meeting and she once again categorically rejected any form of cooperation between the c.d.u. and the far right. fitted. for the c.d.u. germany and for the c.d.u.
3:02 pm
to n.g.o.s people the principle still stands that there is no cooperation with the a.f.p. either directly or indirectly funded to do just this cd you would not vote for a candidate of the a.f.p. or the left party in addition this cd you would not vote for any candidate that is dependent on the votes of the a.f.p. . and. all right let's get more on the story now our political correspondent simon young has been following the latest for us hi simon what else did the city leader have to say you know she called on the social democrats and greens to put up a candidate to become the next state premier in 31 that she said conservatives could vote for also somebody who could unite that state rather than divide it i think that's a reference to the protests against the man who was elected just 2 days
3:03 pm
ago with the support of the far right party you know there are huge protests against him crowds outside the parliament down there calling for him to resign immediately she also mentioned again that she would foresee fresh elections if a state premier cannot be agreed on that basis but in fact i know that the christian democrats really don't want fresh elections there because the polls are showing they've taken a massive hit in supporters a result of this whole rather unfortunate business there really has been a black ice i mean for the conservatives i mean the regional city there in that state and their india has essentially resisted pressure from the party's national leadership to fix this immediately so what does that actually say about the authority of both the party leader and come about but also the chancellor. well i think as far as a k.k.k.
3:04 pm
and a great crime karen bauer is concerned it does suggest that her authority is weak she has been struggling to really stamp her authority on the party since she became leader and of course she is the woman hoping to become the candidate for chancellor to replace angle americal when she reaches the end of her term and you know there's a battle going on inside the christian democrat party for who who that will be a k.-k. is very much hoping that she can she can take that but you know this type of thing suggests that she doesn't quite have everybody under control at the moment as far as i go america is concerned she has to worry about the future of her coalition government with social democrats here in berlin the national government the social democrats are saying they've got lots of questions they want to watch their coalition partners about what all this cooperation and even on are only
3:05 pm
a regional level with the far right ease and they're going to hold a crisis meeting at the government level tomorrow on saturday salmon why has this controversy been so significant i mean what is at stake here for german politics. well i think if you look from the outside your was already a level of concern about the rise of the far right particularly in the east of germany we have seen the f.t. doing very well in some of these eastern states in 3. it's led by a man who courts of sedes may be described as a fascist because of various utterances of his and it all smacks a little bit of the 19 twenties and thirties when conservative parties on occasion helped the nazis on their rise to power it's created a lot of tension and a lot of concern and a lot of determination by many politicians to send the message that you know there
3:06 pm
can't be a foothold for the far right in a democracy our political correspondent simon young thank you simon well the polling institute in for test the map has carried out a snap opinion poll on the controversy enter into and they found that a 61 percent of those surveyed believe that the swift resignation of the sate state premier thomas was the right move only 24 percent thought that he should not have resigned after he was elected with the support of the far right and for more on that story we can speak to cut from that polling organization and for testy mapa they conducted that survey mr stink of thank you so much for joining us how do you interpret the results of that's not poll. well it has been quite a shock for everybody but the main thing is that the liberals the f.t.p. they managed to get into parliament just with 79 votes above the threshold and
3:07 pm
that's something which is very unusual in germany that the smallest party but it's that just made it into into parliament at the last election that they now try. to present the premier in that country and determine what's going on the others the on the other side we will talk a little bit later what it means for the c.d.u. and the f.t. well more than 80 percent of the supporters of the s.p.d. at the left party the greens think it is right for kemalist to resign but also wasn't significant majority of the conservative c.d.u. s.e.'s your supporters as well what does that tell you. well you see the c.d.u. is the party of guys at to do it clearly besides the other parties said we don't want any cooperation an equal level ration with the a.f.p. even the right wing party on the right side of the parliamentary picture.
3:08 pm
for the voters of the c.d.u. it's pretty clear that even 2 thirds of the voters in germany said no this was correct it was correct that he stepped down and only one 3rd said it's ok it's not ok that he stepped down so quickly so sometimes you see that the interests of parliamentary imagery if you tease like those of the c.d.u. and the voters not to be coherent all right well let's take a look at another one of the results from the snap poll that your institute carried out you asked is it right to rule out any political cooperation with the far right a.f.d. and as we can see here a substantial majority of supporters of the mainstream parties up to 82 percent say that it is right to rule out cooperation with the a.f.p. but only a minority of the pro-business free democrat party b f d p. why do you think that is. yeah that's really the one of the
3:09 pm
most interesting findings we had of this step but of course we had already when we had the federal elections in germany we saw that quite a considerable number of ex c.d.u. voters who said i'm not happy with the c.d.u. and they were on the trip to the f.t. they stopped at the f.t.p. had voted for the f.t.p. in the general elections in germany because the f.t.p. already those days said they moved to be to the right side and said you know we have to apply all our laws to that. to send africans for the refugees for asylum back to the countries where they come from and that's not very surprising that 2 thirds of the labor of this they are live or that say ok i think what you want they say no from case to case we have to consider if we can walk what with a hefty or if you cannot work with them so i don't think it was
3:10 pm
a real shock for the majority of the f.t.p. vote is that they're kind of there was even agreed to by the f.t. parliamentarians and to n.g.o.s ok and you haven't done any polling yet on overall party support but how do you think this controversy is going to play out for both the free democrats and also the conservatives. yeah that's the question of what's going to come in germany it's going to happen number one i want to say no 92020 is not 932 we have 85 percent of people he sent us to say which of us my own personal financial situation is good so we are not in 33. and 2020 now but the other thing is you know the f.t. is only half. straight is only half the numbers they have in the vest and it's double double in the east we just had a poll in hamburg and there they're stuck at 7 percent you know the firm has faded
3:11 pm
the biggest that said in german they always had 6 percent so i don't think it will really give the f.t. a big but for the liberals it will be a problem because we have it in the next 2 weeks we have an election in hamburg. just rated them there at 5 percent all right i have got from in protest the map thank you for sharing your insights with us pleasure. all right now german chancellor angela merkel meanwhile has arrived in angola in southern africa for trade talks with president and so it is the 2nd leg of a 3 day tour of the region which began in south africa talks are likely to focus on improving political and economic relations between germany and angola americal is also expected to show her support for a lot and so is the fight against corruption and his attempts to boost the economy did he's adrien krishna went to the capital wanda to find out what people there
3:12 pm
think of their president after a 2 and a half years in power. no wonder the capital of angola on display in the city center is evidence of the massive oil wealth that has poured into the southern african country in recent decades. but just a few kilometers away is another angola one of poverty and mass unemployment. we ask locals as the new president changed anything. there is a change but it's all happening much too slowly. nothing has changed yet because this i mean we don't even have drinking water you know. but i am without any sleep the government should at least deal with waste removal of it when it rains here there are floods that sometimes drag away our children our houses are
3:13 pm
ruined too we have many problems here. but we want the new president runs so to think about us. things are very bad for us here our country is rich but we don't see any of it. people have a lot of money but we are suffering here. joe wilder and so took office 2 years ago his predecessor had been in power for 38 years lorenzo's ernest attempts at confronting the rampant corruption have surprised many here he's even confronted former party allies. it's precisely because i have seen these high levels of corruption. and because i think it must be stopped. that we are fighting what we've witnessed for decades. it might be comfortable for us to leave things as they were before. be
3:14 pm
correct. my. son we have a chance to make a change. and this is the right time to do it a woman. lawrence so is even going after the former president's children especially isabel little son. she's africa's richest woman and has been accused of illegally diverting hundreds of millions of dollars from state coffers to a company's. many important businesses are still controlled by isabel just santarus and as the leaked documents the so-called one the leaks showed she could often count on the help of her father the former president it will probably take the courts can establish the scale of the corruption in the country and punish the perpetrators. so has the era of corrupt elites in angola past residents

of the capital of london's slums have their doubts they want to see concrete results. now to some other stories making news around the world french president is calling for a more coordinated and european defense strategy in a wide ranging speech macaw set out his country's nuclear strategy and said france should be in a position of leadership in a post that european defense system britain's exit from the e.u. leaves france as the block's only nuclear power. thousands of orthodox serbs have gathered in cities across montenegro to protest against a new willette religious law demonstrations have picked up steam since the law was passed at the end of december the orthodox church believes the law could lead to the seizure of its property something the government denies. australia's east coast has welcomed its heaviest rainfall in nearly 20 years the downpour has helped douses some of the country's devastating bush fires and broccoli for farmers

3:17 pm
berlinger who is standing by for us in beijing hi mathias to tell us more about this doctor who has died. he wasn't off home all or just in a hospital in the war on the one central hospital and in the end of december he noticed that there were several cases. that he has seen who had a severe pneumonia and he alerted fellow doctors in a chat group about it. there were 87 other doctors who posted similar stories all of them were simone by the police and were threatened and silent story weeks later the outbreak howard that the government covered it up and said there was no danger and 3 weeks later the outbreak had spread so far that they had to shut down an entire city and consequently an entire province and people have the feeling that if
3:18 pm
they had listened to him if he had not been silenced this might have been prevented him and his hundreds of people have now died from the corona virus in why is this doctor's death getting so much attention. the 1st thing is that he exposes the inability of the government to react to this crisis he did the right thing he spoke truth the government did not and also he is somebody many people can identify with he was not an activist he was not somebody who was engaged in a long time fight against the system or anything he was a doctor a regular guy a father whose one wife is no pregnant with their 2nd child who went to work who noticed something who did the right thing we spoke out and was punished for it and now the whole country is feeling the consequences of him being punished this is what people feel he is some kind of a martyr to people mathias as we said to suspect this outpouring of mourning and
3:19 pm
also anger i mean how do chinese people feel about their government's ability to keep them updated on the crucial information that they need to know. obviously the the reactions to this to his death show that people have little faith in how the government has been acting in this crisis is the child the chinese internet is on fire. every single post on my we chat moment starts something similar to a facebook feed where people post personal updates is about him people are angry and they speak about their anger in the internet of course censorship has weighed in but it has not silenced stories about him and tiredly it is now trying to erase the worst anti government. posts hashtags like the government owes him an apology or posts that mention freedom of

speech as one of the causes of the spread of this disease are deleted but it's impossible now in this in these out. break off anger to completely silence news about him correspondent yes plenty of reporting from beijing thank you. well as the corona virus spreads the race is on to find a cure or a vaccine for the disease the world health organization is convening an international research conference next week to identify promising drug and vaccine projects to be fast tracked for development one company in germany is hoping that its research receives the w h o s back and. the pressure to produce a vaccine for the novel coronavirus is high and given the worldwide competition time is of the essence in the german city of tubing in the cure of that company has been awarded about 7000000 euros thanks to a vaccine initiative the german government and investors like bill gates the fund
