10:02 am
with a populist alternative for germany to block the reelection of the last party incumbent installing a liberal premier in the eastern state of turin jia well the shock political maneuver shattered a post-war consensus among mainstream german parties to shun extremist politics. it's been a tough few days for the leader of germany's conservative christian democrats or c. d. you. get it. widely seen as chancellor angela merkel's protege has been caught in a political fiasco ever since our party's regional leaders in the states of touring gear teamed up with far right politicians to elect a new state premier on friday by a once once again on the record saying her party would not work with the far right put it into order for the c.d.u. in germany and also the c.d.u. and. it's still the case that there will be no cooperation with either directly or

in directly in the form been initially care about had said fresh face elections was the only way to solve the crisis in tiring here now in an apparent back down she says she will give legislators some time to try and find an alternative solution to the crisis she feels the s.p.d. and the greens have a judy to elect their own representative of you which hasn't gone down well with the s.p.d. . we should really use some common sense here and recognise what the outcome of this election was if you can't accept the result then you still have to realise that things would have changed for the voters the right thing to do is hold a new election. more talks are now planned in berlin over the weekend i aimed at containing this regional fiasco so that it doesn't turn into a national political crisis. well for more on the story i am joined in the studio by political correspondents simon young and good to see you ok so crisis talks in berlin today what exactly is the objective of today's meeting want are they hoping
10:04 am
to get out of it is quite hard to say really because i think this is going to be a very political meeting the c.d.u. the s.p.d. the 2 policies in agel americans government are effectively both looking for a political result from from this mini crisis that's happened in 3 and. it's all a battle really which is the most extreme policy in germany actually it's not about these 2 parties it's about the left party the for the successes of the former communists as many would say and the conservatives have continued to say well we won't work with them in any sense or is it actually the far right most people looking at the state of the range anyway with their 2 leaders would say it's definitely the far right that's more extreme now that's why it's so toxic really for the christian democrats that they've allowed their man their candidate to be
10:05 am
supported and voted into the state premier job. in that state with the support of the far right so without getting further into those details you can see that the social democrats are wanting to say well you know what is going on here who's in charge they're seeking to weaken further the leader of the c.d.u. and a great crime karen bauer who really seems to have you know found has a very much offside she hasn't been able to persuade her own people to follow her line and she has looked weak frankly the last few days i think that is the message that the social democrats want to come out of here so they may really not be looking for any solution until but the talks will be about what's the way forward and how can we rode back from this position that. they've got right now all right so as you said the leader of the city you and i couldn't come she had things tested fresh elections as a way out of this crisis that proposal has not been backed by the local branch of
10:06 am
the city intervention and so now we have on the american the chancellor she's back in berlin after a trip to africa can we expect her to intervene now if the leader of the party is unable to do so well in the context that i was just setting out is very interesting angle a miracle is essentially being deployed by the social democrats they're saying oh we must have the chancellor come in and put her stamp of all 30 back on all this because clearly a k.-k. the woman now leading the c.d.u. doesn't have the authority to run the policy so really again miracles will hole is that as far as the social democrats see it to sort of weaken a.k.k. and a great crime care about the woman he seeks to succeed medical as chancellor in the future and you know some would say this last week has been has been very disastrous for the for the c.d.u. leadership indeed the political correspondent simon young many thanks indeed.
