for now is sticking to russia's strict laws by protesting for justice on her own. you're watching the news coming to you live from berlin a recap of the top story that we are funding for you this being a political bombshell in germany and a good who was seen as a likely successor to german chancellor angela merkel now says she doesn't want the job her decision comes just days after hope party was shaken relations with the far right. on the great. is due to make a press statement shortly i'm looking at pictures there the mikes are set up the journalists are sitting there just waiting. to come out and address journalists meanwhile i have with me did political correspondent kate brady kate while we to hear from the woman who's known as. a kid in germany tell us how surprising was
1:31 pm
announcement that she will be stepping down as leader of the cd you bought well certainly was a surprise she's been wrapped up in in several scandals over her time in office as the c.d.u. party leader and then also shortly after that she was appointed the office of defense minister and so far we've heard that she will be continuing to stay on as germany's defense minister but this was surprising it seems that many things had been sorted out over the weekend following the scandal in the eastern state of just to remind ourselves of course last week the state pregnant state premier in thuringia was elected there and that was done through cooperation between the conservative c.d.u. the per business d.p. and the far right a.f.d. so effectively the conservatives there actually overstepped party line they crossed party lines as the c.d.u. the conservative c.d.u. like of the parties in germany say we will know. work with the far right a.f.d.
1:32 pm
either directly or in directly but in the aftermath of that it became very clear exactly to what extent a.k.k. as she's known here had lost or thora tea party the c.d.u. there in thuringia had not only crossed the party line there but then it seemed as well the coals after that apartment that controversial appointment calls for fresh elections to try to resolve this issue seem to fall on deaf ears that in fear and sorry it was really about her or thorazine rather the lack of authority that she had over the concept saves and it seems that that has been really the final straw of course as i mentioned she has been caught up in a in a previous couple of scandals some comments that she made about freedom of speech and also a rather bad taste joke that fell flat last year and so this really was the final straw but in the doubts really over her role for a city in the conservative party the series of missteps and this was what you're
1:33 pm
seeing is the tipping point how would this will be for talking about the c.d.u. party big in a seat of crisis now with leadership we're talking of the party being in a really but is this a crisis which would also affect the german government well for the german government right now everything seems quite stable but of course this government right now is made up of 3 parties in total 2 conservative parties on the social democrats and so the social democrats of course will be looking especially for to know who is the leader of the c.d.u. right now and of them i think it is fair to say this is very much a big crisis for the cd right now and it's very likely that the next leader of this party won't only lead them through these next few months but is also likely to be put forward as the candidate for the 2021 elections of course germany is jews to head to the polls again at the latest by autumn of next year so really well when it comes around for the summer it seems at the moment it will be some of the for. well
1:34 pm
we see who the new leader is of the c.d.u. it seems that there really will be a race that to see who wants to almost throw their hat in the ring to be to put themselves forward to be chancellor as well and obviously there are lots of kind of names swirling around as to who could possibly take over as c.e.o. party leader where do you think this could go because we. see the ability to could actually change the direction in which the body is going what is interesting you should say that about changing the direction because a k.k. originally was seen as trying to assume one to take the c.d.u. on a new direction of course during a time in office as the c.d.u. party leader in her time as chancellor there were many complaints over the years that grew within the party that she had moved the conservatives further and further to the center ground and so there were calls in the party to move towards a more traditional conservative direction and i think a k.-k. was really seen as a stepping stone towards that she was certainly much more conservative than the market but not as far right on the conservative spectrum as some of the other
1:35 pm
candidates of the names that we're already hearing being thrown around and who have also taken part in previous party leadership contest with a k k so we've got names like free today schmetz who's an old. competition with matt cool and it's interesting actually that he actually stepped down from his job at blackrock the world's largest investment company just last week almost sensing that something was in the water something was on its way and he said that he'd be stepping down from his commercial position to make himself more available so he's definitely likely to throw his hat into the ring other names including. of north rhine-westphalia germany's most populated states he's a popular can do within the party and also young bond is another name one of the more younger contestants in his late thirty's he's current. the health minister but
1:36 pm
he seems to be keeping quite quiet so far course things could become quite toxic. over the next couple of weeks and so it would really have to think there might be some new surprise names that come out of the woodwork as well but right now it really difficult to see exactly who will replace again this question who will replace michael this is something that the c.d.u. thought it had already solved a problem that it had already solved but again at the moment the only names on the table the 3 names that were on the table about 18 months ago are absolutely very much a case of deja vu here and also just feeling. such a huge task and win on a good one the leadership contest. a while ago it was always seen as a vindication of chancellor beckett's policies because she was a 2 foot success so. what is kind of stepping down mean for. the legacy i don't think it really affects michael's legacy but it will certainly be
1:37 pm
a point against michael but at this point in the terms in office which we already know as a final term in office it's not going to do anything to damage machall damage her image we've seen over the last few months since she stepped down as party leader and we've seen her really take on a much more international role concentrating more in foreign policy and international relations and really stepping back from party politics in in a big really to let a k.-k. shape the party move the c.d.u. towards a direction that it's grassroots base wanted it to move to so i think merkel here is fine. but yeah we have to wait and see because we're still waiting to hear from an exit she is due to address journalists in a short while from now we're keeping an eye on that story and kate is still with me in the studio and as soon as there are developments from the c.d.u. headquarters in berlin we'll bring them to you let me not move on to some other news and that starts with so. sport and in the bundesliga the match between to be

a minds is been put daylight between themselves and their relegation places ok turning away from sport on a solo abouta has been launched into space on an unprecedented mission to capture the 1st pictures of the sun's elusive pose the one of a half $1000000000.00 craft is a joint mission between the european space agency n.f.l. it's a joint nasa park a similar probe which was launched 18 months ago and will venture dangerously close to the sun in order to discover its secrets. the solo will examine the sun's activity by exploring its magnetic field more closely than ever before the satellite will also look at the electrically charged particles that all star emits into space under average circumstances but also during active phases known as solar storms having some forewarning of when such

relations with the far right if tea party off to an election. now we're expecting to hear from on a great calm cotton ball at the c.d.u. headquarters she was due to make a press statement about 20 minutes ago but she still hasn't appeared the journalists have gathered that the microphones are in place and we just goes to show maybe this delay is because it's still actually a finalizing what she would want to say and discussing it with other party leaders it is in a sense underscores that the c.d.u. party finds itself in a bit of a crisis and with me i have a political correspondent kate brady. kid tell us the cotton bowl has decided that she's not going to stay on as body leader just how much of a crisis is this for a chance to make this cd you bought this is a huge crisis and of course we're not only talking about long term as to who they might now put forward as a candidate for the elections which reduces take place by fall of next year at the very latest but also the policy now needs to decide once again again they forget
1:46 pm
we've already been here before what direction does the conservative c.d.u. want to go right now and how conservative does it want to be and there's been a lot of complaints over the years as we've talked about for about merkel moving the c.d.u. towards the center ground of germany's political spectrum and a lot of the competition or at least a lot of the main candidates likely candidates in the next leadership contest very much much more conservative more conservative than a k.k. and certainly much more conservative than angela merkel and so be interesting to see how they position themselves and that will then have a huge effect on those next elections in 2021 of course they will be the c.d.u. will be vying to win back as many of the votes that they lost to the far right after as possible and that's going to be really tricky situation for them as we've seen already in other parts of germany where conservatives have tried to follow some of the tactics of the anti migrant rhetoric for example we've seen other
1:47 pm
parts of germany try to attempt to use that kind of rhetoric to win back votes from the far right and that is simply backfired we saw that in bavaria and we've also seen in parts of western germany as well so be interesting to see how they attempt to move forward with this and also how far right are they really willing to go absolutely because the key issue underlying this whole leadership crisis is the the hot and the sort of the party and there is a very significant element within the cd you bought which believes that chancellor angela merkel. has moved too far to be from the core of the right wing principle is that she's pulled the body too much to the center so when dick is a leadership contest off to other good. is it safe to assume that a lot of the people who will be vying for that position will be representing the right wing of the c.d.u. think certainly and that not only applies to the c.d.u. but across germany's political spectrum right now i think going into the next
1:48 pm
elections posses including the c.d.u. a very keen to really define what it is that they stand for and the c.d.u. will be certainly taking a more conservative stance but again this is a question how far right are they willing to go especially to try and win back after a vote is uneven at the same time when some votes perhaps from the pro-business free democrats the f.t.p. even to a certain extent some disillusioned s.p.d. social democrat voters and so this will be a really big turning point for the c.d.u. but of course going on into this into this leadership contest which is likely place in the summer we're really stuck on the number of contestants right now or potential candidates for this role again it's the same 3 names the same 3 men ran up against a k.-k. and at the end of 2018 of course she came out victorious but no one new has emerged in the meantime so again the question really does still remain does the cd you have
1:49 pm
anyone right now who really can fill machall shoes of course so far her own appointed as she was nominated an indoor. her own has failed in this job and in a way merkel has even outlived. sesar in the stands and so the c.d.u. really has some soul searching to do to decide what direction it's going in and it will be interesting then to see who exactly throws their hat into the ring come the some and as you said not just the cd but the book the main parties in the governing coalition the isp. and the c.d.u. a hemorrhaging support for the far right if tea party and surely at this point questions will be asked about the rule of the also in this crisis because the other media opposition party politics but also in this recent election which is at the heart of this present crisis to india if deep sea do you. voted
1:50 pm
along with the if the if you did flight a destructive role in the situation precipitating the crisis that we're seeing right now of course in the a.f.d. was a huge catalyst in this and ultimately in the resignation over a.k.k. or she is known here and will be interesting to see exactly how the next cd you possibly will will tackle in dealing with the f.d.a. and particularly with the own c.d.u. factions in eastern germany of course it was in the eastern states of thuringia that this controversial appointment took place last week when the c.d.u. effectively cooperated with the f.d.a. which was additional decision the crossed party line and they the c.d.u. like the policies in germany say we will not either directly or in directly work with the far right f.d.a. and so this to be was broken forever different regardless of how the c.d.u. moved forward now that happened last week and that cannot be undone which is
1:51 pm
something that i'm really magical herself said last week as well and of course we have a few more regional elections coming up as well in eastern germany between now and the next federal election and so the c.d.u. is a very tricky game to play now in in terms of how they manage to whip their factions into shape it specially in eastern germany to ensure that we don't see a repeat of last week and yet more attempts from the more conservative wing of the conservative c.d.u. to work with the far right absolutely but they'll be of course a difficult balancing act because. some would argue that once a genie is out of the bottle and the has been broken you can't put the genie back in the bottle but we're still waiting to hear from come. to why she's taken this decision they are meetings going on in the c.d.u. headquarters here in but ended up going at pitches a lot of journalists waiting to hear what she had to say the microphones are in place but there's still no sign of an

a great. one let us remind you about. who was viewed as a hand-picked successor of chancellor angela merkel to take over from her as party leader. it was all smiles to begin with in december 28th and a great crowd karen bauer was elected as merkel successor a cd party leader the former stalin state premier was merkel's hand-picked heir and firmly set her sights on one day filling her shoes as chancellor. her appointment as german defense minister soon after was a chance to prove her worth in a high office but within her 1st year a cd you party leader cracks began to show after a number of gaffes a joke a carnival mocking gender neutral bathrooms sparked oprah from germany's l g b t q i community did it to let in front of the biggest loser toilets are these of a man who can't get decide whether they want to stand or sit while paying. but

while just weeks later a k.k.k. modifier again after she questioned how opinion is manufactured online following calls from german floggers to boycott her party in european elections. proposals to create an international security zone in syria were also badly received after social democrats said they hadn't been consulted before hand. over while losses for the conservatives in regional state elections added to a whole load of criticism but still she vowed to go on. yeah vala we want the best and the brightest minds in this party and everyone should get involved and if someone has a different opinion from me that's a living democracy we can grow with it and i want this union to grow to make us stronger than we are today that's the aspiration that i bring to this party. but it

was last week's scandal in the eastern state of. the final seed of doubt in a case of foresty the thuringian of the c.d.u. overstepped party line and cooperation with the far right to elect the new state premier now following karam by was resignation the conservative c.d.u. is left with a familiar crisis wondering yet again who can succeed. in that report by a kid pretty a political correspondent who's with me in the studio and good we all remember the time when on a good come kind of was elected as leader with the endorsement of the most powerful woman in many people say in the world. and just over a year in this post and we've seen her confidence go way remind us as to what happened exactly she came to be the leader of the relatively unknown to many people even here in germany as
1:55 pm
a state premier solid and with that endorsement people believed that she was a sort of people believe that she was a strong candidate but very quickly we saw that once she was let loose and really machall stood back and let her try at least to shine on her own that simply wasn't the case and we saw there in that report just a few of the moments that really we saw her confidence starting to ebb away and the criticism at the same time started to grow of course she received a lot of criticism for that rather bad taste in a joke at qana vaal which caused a problem long for many people here in germany not only from the. community and of course also as some issues there on policy as well when she announced that she wanted to create a security zone in syria and of course that was something that the german foreign minister and also a social democrat was extremely unhappy about he said as well that he had. and even
1:56 pm
being consulted on the issue at the time but even just 2 months ago or 2 or 3 months ago we were at the c.d.u. party conference where she really gave a strong comeback speech what even some of her biggest rivals including pleaded i should matts who is likely to be a candidate in them to to replace her as party leader now he took a much more softer tone towards her saying that yes i'll stand back and i'll let you do your work but even then there was a a hint that he might be back and of course now now might be his chance and in the end this scandal last week that we saw play out in eastern germany really was the last scene of doubt in her over the party and she clearly just wasn't able to whip the c.d.u. into shape tell us a little bit more about the mess because he was a strong contender in this leadership contest and he comes with a very. political baggage into this fight he has was
1:57 pm
a grudge kind of candidate of his just over a year ago and now he's got a chance an opportunity again to fight for the position which many say he would dearly love to have and she had the direction away from the kind of like you centrist policies of ocular mecca exactly in the early 2000 he disappeared from the scene of german polish 6 and was formally arrival as well of angela merkel but she picked him to the party to become the party leader of the c.d.u. herself all those years ago and he went on to he stepped back from politics and went into into business and of course his biggest job was a black rock the world's largest investment company which interestingly is a position that he set down from just last week almost as if you could send his moment was coming so it's very interesting timing that he said last week that he was stepping down to make himself more available and of course in the so in the coming weeks now ahead of this cd you. party leadership race we'll just see exactly
1:58 pm
how available he is and of course with him being a former rival of merkel i think it would be very satisfying for him as well not only to take over the reins of the conservative c.d.u. but to move the posse away from the direction that merkel has taken it in over her last 4 terms in office which has been very much to the center grounds of germany's political spectrum and he's very keen to kind of take a u. turn and move the c.d.u. further to its more conservative and further to the right of it's sort of another opportunity for him to settle his political and ideological scores with us because we're still waiting to hear from on a great company and i'm still looking at pictures coming to us live from the c.d.u. headquarters and still no sign of i'm going to come out and vote but we'll of course keep an eye on developments then good night there soon as the press conference starts in the meantime there's been a bring you up to date for some of the stories i fear following for you the 92nd
