a look at the growing market for humus your again it so well later that whole c o 2. this is your views of your business report i'm stephen there's in berlin it's good to have you with us the corona virus outbreak in china has rattled the global economy disrupting virtually every major industry and the travel industry was the 1st sector to be hit the world's biggest gambling hub mark how has sent shut down many airlines have scaled back services and shipping companies are even canceling calls to chinese ports entire supply chains automotive electronic industrial are beginning to creek carmaker hyundai shut down operations in south korea due to a lack of parts from china apple meanwhile warned that its production numbers could drop by 10 percent because of supply chain issues companies like adidas or starbucks have also closed thousands of their stores in china. the question now what's the overall impact the global economy grew by 2.4 percent in 2019 and for
7:32 am
this year the world bank has estimated growth of 2.5 percent however many economists are warning that a further spread of coronavirus could lead to a contraction of the global economy and possibly even a recession. now those effects are increasingly visible take the singapore air show it's the biggest event of its kind in asia with more than $1000.00 companies in attendance for its last run and $28.00 team this year however major companies have already pulled out and attendance is significantly down analysts fear that that could just be the tip of the iceberg for the aerospace industry. flying in the face of adversity these chinese fighter jets did make it to the singapore air show this week plenty more didn't. the biennial aerospace event opened on shoes day but the deadly corona virus outbreak has seriously clipped its wings singapore is

a long way from china but it has reported $45.00 cases so far. as a result over 70 exhibitors including major players such as military aircraft maker lockheed martin and the canadian plan maker bombardier have skipped the event. at least 10 chinese companies are also not here due to a travel ban on those coming from the country imposed by singapore. well i notice that there are the football boots which betray him this morning i think some people didn't turn up and this day they seem to have reduced presence. but this is still a major industry event boeing and airbus are in attendance among 930 exhibiting companies what is one of the biggest global shows of its kind organizers have imposed strict medical checks and hunch shaking is being strongly discouraged not that much of that was expected here anyway with few anticipating any major deals to be announced while the outbreak has hampered this event those attending are hoping
7:34 am
that the longer term impacts on the aviation and aerospace sectors will be kept to a minimum both with chinese g.d.p. for 2020 expected to lose at least one percent on the back of the outbreak that looks like an increasingly for lauren prospect. and for more on this i'm joined by our correspondent in taipei gold's on the hub. so how are restrictions on business people like we've seen there how are they affecting business overall in the asian region. well we know more than 50 countries they have already insured travel ban on china after the hour break but what really matters is actually the travel restrictions inside china because the scale is just unbelievable it's estimated that 40 to 45 percent of china's adult population is under self-imposed or mentoring quarantine so many foreign and domestic countries they have already. banned it all or their production because

there's simply not enough manpower this includes some big names like apple panasonic toyota etc and sent some tonys companies they told me that what they fear the most is the dominant domino effect they mean for example different parts of i phone produce in different factories so if one stops the others have to wait and the loss is just incalculable. so you mentioned several big companies there panasonic apple is there any talk about these large companies potentially moving their operations out of china if the situation continues well it's probably too early to comment on this right now but what i can tell you is that i've also talked to some of the companies in sens in one of the major manufacturing hubs in china and they told me that only around 20 to 30 percent of the company's a factory open during the past 3 days so given this uncertainty many businesses they have already placed their orders elsewhere to places like taiwan south korea

japan and except they have to do this because they have to continue their production so if china cannot control the outbreak by march or april we might see more and more business leaving china and even reorganize they say they should of the whole supply chain. now there was a counterpoint to this if you look at some of the market activity right now the markets seem to be a little bit more optimistic at least some of them seeing the possibility that perhaps the virus has peaked even foxconn is up 3 percent right now how do business people in the region see it themselves how do the businesses see it are they optimistic or is it way too early for that while there are more fear and uncertainty among tens of billions of business in china they are expecting huge losses this season because the core of the virus outbreak happened during the chinese new year holidays which is the most important the largest sells season of the year that have impacts on many business for example like the

retailers and best friends. they are now have to actually rely on governments rescue plan and before they have to close for good they lost almost half of their annual income or write an important point there about the importance of the lunar new year holiday so it's going on for us in taipei thank you very much. and let's say in asia it would be the most extensive trade agreement the e.u. has ever reach with an emerging country the deal with vietnam is up for approval today in the european parliament it would lower trade barriers on trade worth 23000000000 euro and it could cement the southeast asian nation status as an upcoming economic player but of course there are concerns. of sports shoes could soon get cheaper for european buyers german sporting goods maker added us has been producing sneakers in hoti minh city for years footwear is a big export for vietnam with 15 percent of all germans walking on shoes made in

vietnam most goods leave the country via haiphong ports the e.u. imports products whether around 38000000000 euros from vietnam and it's not just shoes there are a lot of elec tronics and agricultural products european cuisine might be a bit less spicy without vietnam as it accounts for nearly half of all paper imports. the agreement would mean the end of virtually all tariffs on bilateral trade. the benefit of the human so many preferential access to a vibrant to come to me of almost 100000000 people removal of non-tariff barriers for exporters which according to the famous for example on cars. spirits. to vietnamese side says it will comply with international labor and environmental standards and that also includes the possibility of founding independent trade unions something so far impossible in the communist state.

or a story we'll be keeping an eye on as it progresses climate change is already a challenge for farmers around the world as conditions alter such as the availability of rain so to planting strategies many organic farmers are now hoping that nutrient rich humus that is the organic layer of topsoil can give them an edge in changing times and there's a bonus it traps more carbon. brussel sprouts one of the few vegetables harvested in the middle of winter in the german state of time near the danish border there's been a lot of rainfall and the plants did well. the organic brussels sprouts are top notch thanks to the high quality soil that we have a relatively long harvest especially for brussels sprouts we've picked up until march and that comes from taking good care of the soil just going to. the land belongs to the organic farmer had includes and he's been building up humus or the

hectares of farmland. for example compost teen he mixes compost with water then lets the mixture sit for 24 hours after that he brings it out onto the field the mixture is simple to make and saves money just as the situation's always getting harder for farmers the climate extremes are getting worse more drought floods we need the humus to improve the soil so that the location remains productive stand up . another method to improve the life of the soil is targeted grazing in the summer commutes and as cattle on his fields in a new the cation every day but the sheep have the run of the place in the winter. we can be shoved under the also long we can leave the sheep there long enough to eat everything down to the ground and stomp everything down like on the levee but we don't want to do that. they only state a short period and eat about half of it if we don't then things start happening in the soil humid acid can develop. in that just by leaving the soil
