their way to victory the cats that is will meet some truly fancy felines at vietnam's 1st national yes cat show. it's good to have you with us a document that has been leaked to d.w. news exposes what appears to be china's mistreatment of its muslim minority we people the chinese government claims that camps housing we are simply giving them skills training but the united nations believes that as many as 1000000 are being held in the camps in shin province right there chinese authorities claim that the people. are there out of their own free will and they're receiving book ational

training to help fight extremism but d.-w. news and its german media partners in d r w d r and the german daily newspaper the zoo tortured sites and they have evidence that contradicts that narrative it seems to confirm what many have long suspected that china is putting we in prison based on their religion and their culture naomi conrad to be w.'s investigative unit has this report. it's a detailed surveillance document it's extremely likely that this is authentic yes it's the dress but someone should tell the world what's going on there. is stumble. here on the wall. these men now we get muslims from china back home they could be imprisoned for the simple act of praying and i quickly come to realize that each one of them has

a story of loss. of. the fascist chinese government wants to eliminate that we got people of the entire population of john right in front of the eyes of the world. we asked them to raise their hands if they have family members who've been imprisoned in china's province where missed week is live. across jin jiang dozens of camps holding up to a 1000000 week. let's take a closer look at one of them faces a reeducation camp next to a prison. we identified watchtowers and high walls. that countless camps like this one the chinese government claims they have fallen tree vocational to. centers designed to fight we

stream it. to but we received a document which shows that china is targeting weak is based on the identity and religion it lists hundreds of detainees the reasons for their detention are. caused by force of the weaker academic up to we are you perceived it from a source and took a huge risk sharing it with us. january 8 i received the phone call like it's messenger call and. he said that stop doing this and to be can reach you where were you are yes
8:05 pm
it's dangerous but someone. should take the danger someone should speak up someone should tell the world what's going on. the document doesn't have any stamp or signature we showed it to several experts who agreed that it is almost certainly an official text. me it contains an enormous amount of extremely specific. data from one very small community in john and that. it would take an immense amount of effort and access to publicly unavailable data to fabricate a document like this in this neighborhood in istanbul where many we live we met one woman who sisters are mentioned on the list. to news or talk to news some family members had been imprisoned but it shocked her when she found out that her youngest
8:06 pm
sister was listed in the document called them back yet awhile. i was really sad for days i couldn't sleep. i was really shocked. and sad about her arrest. ok i'll call them. china says it's fighting extremism but talked he says her younger sister wasn't religious her only crime she had too many children along all of them i heard that the conditions in prison are unimaginably bad they don't even have enough food to eat oh. well. she doesn't know her relatives have been released like countless other we did they have been caught up in china's all encompassing anti terrorism drive. and joining me here in the studio
8:07 pm
is my colleague naomi conrad from the w.'s investigative unit talk about this document to your what exactly does it show it's a really chilling document because it shows that basically it doesn't take much for you to be whisked away you can have a beer that's too long veil or maybe even it's just a wife who wears a veil also shows how all encompassing the surveillance system in china is the authorities know whether you have relatives abroad they know if you talk to them they know how often every day you pray i mean it's all pervasive and that's what this document shows it's really pretty chilling we're talking about this document hell do we know how do we verify the authenticity of this document that was a job that took us several weeks actually i mean we received these 140 odd pages in chinese that the 1st step was to translate them into english and we said the document with various leading scholars who will agree that it was most likely authentic and then the next step was to find relatives of the people on the list we
8:08 pm
obviously couldn't talk to those people because that would put them in danger and some people are still imprisoned there we managed to find several relatives talk to them they corrupt corroborated what was in the list and then we also tried to locate and verify the count so that the people were sent to the mentioned in the list we managed to verify 2 of the camps and also find the most likely location of the 2 other camps so we do believe that it is most likely. what we have we learned about the feet of the detainees i mean we know that the details are unprecedented what happened to them we know that some people were released but they weren't released into freedom they were released back into their community where they're most likely very very closely monitored some people might not even be allowed to move around freely we also know that some of the detainees were released into labor camps that could be those could be factories in their villages they could also be factories in camps but they're most likely forced labor force in factories so
8:09 pm
yes. you know that even if they were released them very often being free and we had any official reaction from the chinese government we actually managed to talk to the chinese foreign minister when he was here last week so let's take a look at that. no one has seen any kind of concentration camp and. no one has seen any persecution the only thing to see was people of various ethnicities and living together harmoniously these facts demonstrate that the so-called concentration camps the so-called 1000000 are 100 percent rumors they are complete fake news for. news i mean the one we been hearing now for years absolutely it didn't come as a surprise i mean they've been calling these camps voluntary for quite a while and it was very unlikely that they tend around an auction tell us the truth so it didn't come as a surprise but it's just. the narrative that we've been hearing for quite
8:10 pm
a while i mean it's one thing. expose something that's going on in china so the other thing to effect change and what are the chances that the plight of the week will be improved at all by the world knowing what's going on well a lot depends on governments right i mean the members of the european parliament not that long ago called for talking to sanctions exactly what the united states did but we have to remember that european german companies that doing business and i mean folks in this producing cars that so you know the german industry and the european industry also has a very important say in this. is always known we appreciate your reporting thank you. and you can find more on these leaked documents and the work of the w's investigative team at g.w. dot com or you can follow the hash tag at caracas list.

or here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world authorities in burkina faso say the gunman have killed at least $24.00 civilians in the east of the country the attack targeted a church in the village of ponzi is the list extremists have been blamed for a growing insurgency that started in neighboring mali and it's also extended into newsier the united nations and says armed men have killed at least 20 civilians in an english speaking region of northwest cameroon more than a dozen children were among the dead the massacre followed clashes between government troops and separatists fighting for an independent anglo phone state an opposition party blamed the army for the attack the government has denied any involved a suicide attack has killed at least 10 people in the western pakistani city of. around 35 people were injured in the explosion local police said the blast went off near quite as press club as dozens of supporters of a sunni militant group had gathered outside. china is

reporting an increase in the number of new cases of the coronavirus reversing the trend of the last 2 days the government also says the death toll now stands at 1800 and that more than 70000 people are infected with the virus across the country. in china's hu base province the epicenter of the outbreak noura posted cases are again on the rise after 2 days of declining figures in mainland china alone officials say the total number of confirmed cases is over 70000 with nearly 1800 deaths. chinese president xi jinping is now facing criticism over why the public was not alerted sooner to the outbreaks potential severity official media recently released an internal speech he gave an apparent attempt to show the communist party leadership acted decisively from the start but instead it revealed china's top leaders knew about the outbreaks dangers weeks before the president publicly
8:13 pm
addressed the problem. and you know china's military has now dispatched hundreds more medical workers and extra supplies to a bit to shore up the city's overwhelmed health care system. or earlier we spoke with correspondent and we asked him about the fall well from the release of president she's speech. yeah this speech that we're talking about is a speech that he held on the 3rd of february that is 2 weeks ago it was published in chile sure that's the party's theoretical magazine that a party that spreads party ideology the interesting thing most of it is about combating a war against the virus and his leadership but the interesting thing is that he said in that speech that he had been cheering that battle against the virus from january the 7th now that was the time when authorities still denied that there were
8:14 pm
ayers was dangerous and this period of denial is seen as one of the main causes for the spread of the virus so he is now basically opening the failures from the beginning and that's quite remarkable that he has sat this openly and this could be published in the party magazine it's might be that they're confident to win the battle and that the initial failures will stand back behind these massive efforts that they're bringing on now to combat the virus it might be that he couldn't evade any more. this acknowledgement because the fact that he has not been seen during this period is also has also drawn a lot of criticism we don't know really the motives behind it but we know that we are in the period now when it's when when this battle against the virus is something that dominates the whole country today just we have seen news that most

probably the 2 sessions the annual session of the parliament will be postponed this is a major step in this political system that does not like surprises to their schedule . and that was much he is billing they are reporting from china where the european union has agreed on a new naval mission to monitor the u. when embargo on arms shipments to libya the country is riven by the standoff between fighters loyal to the u.n. back to government in tripoli and rebel groups that control much of the country the civil war has been raging for about 6 years now and libya is awash with arms despite that you win in bargo the new european union military patrol will replace the current naval mission which is called sophia. following discord over measures to help stabilize libya e.u. foreign ministers have reached an agreement critics were outspoken austria wanted to block a new naval mission for fear it would encourage more migrants to attempt crossing

the mediterranean as they try to make their way to europe. first the sophia mission in the mediterranean off the coast of libya will be stopped secondly we've agreed that we want to military mission and not a humanitarian one and it will focus on the arms embargo the task of the original even naval missions sophia was to fight arms trafficking and people smuggling but it frequently rescued refugees that see the new mission will involve aerial as well as naval assets primarily in the east mediterranean that's where there's more arms trafficking and fewer refugee routes but if ships help refugees the naval deployment will be ended immediately. it's fundamentally important that the european union acknowledges its responsibility to take action and play a role in ensuring the homes will no longer be violated that's what's required to end the civil war in libya. but it's not clear if this new plan will bring the

desired results the details of the mission have yet to be worked out. on the terri shoulders has been covering this story for us in brussels earlier we asked her if the new mission monitoring the u.n. embargo means they are not going to rescue migrants and sea anymore they are saying that this will not be the focus of the mission there would not have been able to get agreement any other way and this was something that foreign policy chief burrell very much wanted to do of course journalists asked afterwards what are you going to do when you see these people and he said you know we're leaving the you know the rules of engagement for another meeting but this is this is the risk and this is what austria and italy were saying they're saying there's going to be a mission. creep as soon as those e.u. ships are patrolling the moderate mediterranean people fleeing libya are going to get back on their rafts because that migration route has really decreased now so they're calling it a pull factor and that's something that's going to be watched very carefully and in
8:18 pm
fact in this agreement reached today it is said that if that happens if you start seeing migration spike again in that direction perhaps the naval mission will be scrapped once again. that is terry holt they're reporting from brussels you're watching t w news live from berlin still to come furry fun with some fancy felines join us as we visit vietnam's 1st. national can't show. a perfect storm. i thought about now and late on sunday mine's in shock i came away with a point each in a lackluster encounter were both signs of waste in their chances and one of the best opportunities of the match minds is probably close on so it was shot from close range denied by the crossbar late in the 2nd half and injury time shock was the usa international western mckinney had a corner agonizingly wide of the net. and so the game ended go.
