this is d. w. news live from berlin surprise and disbelief in turkey as a court of quits antigovernment activists the 9 had been charged in connection with their role in anti-government protests 70 years ago the case had been widely regarded as a test of justice in turkey. also coming up chilling new evidence of china's crackdown on its minority leader population the document leaked to d.w. news confirms that time it is and personating imprisoning excuse me members of its muslim minority based soley on their religion and culture we will speak with the

relatives of those being held at the plug pulled on tesla the electric car builder was clearing a site for and met the factory near barletta but a court has ordered it to halt operations after its petition are mentalists and it's deja vu for paris and her mom coach thomas to fill in the champions league tonight as he returns to his former team for the year don't. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a turkish court has acquitted 9 civil society activists accused of seeking to overthrow turkey's government in the 2013 gezi park protests the verdict was not expected judges ordered the defendants immediate release the defendants include the businessman and rights act. and the actor and director method.
3:02 pm
critics have called the trial of attempt to silence or appease opposition and criminalize anti-government protest the gezi park protests were triggered by plans to build a shopping mall on a small park in central istanbul. and for more i'm joined by yulia han correspondent it is stumble yulia how big of a surprise was this verdict. i don't think anybody saw this coming as the defendants of us journalists we were actually bracing for a tough verdict today because turkish prosecutors had asked for aggravated life sentences in solitary confinement for 3 of the defendants and long jail for the others so for anybody who's been following this trial these acquittals come as a huge surprise we've actually heard about 110 years celebrations erupting there
3:03 pm
inside the courtroom and outsides a court that is outside of istanbul here in the city and you've just mentioned also he is a well known businessmen here in turkey he is also somebody who has been doing many civil society projects with a european organizations and he was the only defendant behind bars he had to spend more than 2 years in pretrial just tension so today's verdict means he's going to be set free and this is of course a huge relief for him for his family for everybody supporting him and the other defendants he is one of the defendants how about the others what is this verdict mean for them. well we've seen some reactions already there on social media they're being widely shared i've seen one of the defendants actually saying that he's still in disbelieve this has come very unexpected but he
3:04 pm
also says it makes him happy and he would like to see this as a sign that change in turkey is a possible you have to know the defendants are active as journalists city planners so all well known civil society figures here in turkey and they have been accused of a grave crime trying to overthrow the turkish government i've been talking to some of them especially last year and they told me they feel like they're somehow part of a weird fictional movie and they can't get out of it because all these accusations leveled against them are just so. so this is how they felt about it and but i can only repeat this again for them this is of course a day a good day a day of relief what does it say about the judiciary in the country its independence and just the general state of affairs in the country. well i think some clearly would like to see this as
3:05 pm
a sign of an independent judiciary here in turkey we've just had from istanbul's opposition may want to get present ed once party here in istanbul in the election last year he says the verdict is a true source of joy and it restores trust in the turkish judicial system but then there are others who are more skeptical because they have been saying this trial has been politically motivated from the very beginning the turkish traditionally has been turned into a political tool so the verdict today has to be seen as another political decision after all this trial has been going on for nearly 2 and a hols years one man had to stay behind bars for more than 2 years let me tell you what one has been saying that has been closely following this trial it's the ngo article 19 they said was so relieved but still angry the gaze upon trial is
3:06 pm
a perfect example of judicial harassment the case has never made any sense you leon admissable thank you. now for the last 3 years there have been suggestions that china is systematically persecuting its muslim minority population the weekers now w. has obtained damning evidence that they are indeed being targeted because of their religion and culture a document leaked on its partners shows that china is detaining weaker people for reasons such as praying wearing a headscarf visiting a foreign website or having relatives abroad it also reveals that chinese authorities are using high tech surveillance to keep track of the identities locations and habits of individual bleecker muslims the document was made available to you at great personal risk by a whistleblower and independent experts contacted by you said that it's highly unlikely that the document is genuine now the chinese government has always denied
3:07 pm
that it persecutes the weak or minority saying that the detention centers there held in our vocational training center is built to fight extremist ideas and provide weaker us with valuable skills just last week the chinese foreign minister issued another forceful denial of the mistreatment have a look jewish. no one has seen any kind of concentration camp and. no one is you know any persecution the only thing to see was people of various ethnicities and living together harmoniously these facts demonstrate that the so-called concentration camps the so-called 1000000 are 100 percent rumors they are complete fake news for. another harsh denial from the chinese government there let's get more on this with nicola because he is a director for amnesty international in east and southeast asia and the pacific thank you so much for joining us on this latest leak gives us a lot of new insight into the reasons that china is detaining the leaders does
3:08 pm
anything about this leak surprise you or is it consistent with your research. if i think it's unfortunately it's very consistent with what amnesty international and other human rights organization and journalists have been documented saying over the years that isn't all out states on sort compared to stamp out the religious political against d. of we go as in other muslim ethnic groups in disenchant we go to thomas region the communist party thinks that any. identity mark whether religious or cultural is a possible they call for aspiration for greater autonomy or for résistance to the gradual as simulation of the region by the chinese central states and therefore it's decided to completely stamp it out the so-called war on terror has provided

an excuse and allege to mitzi that the government uses to pursue it is policies that are incredibly violative of human rights and the scale of it is really and parallel in the history of china how difficult is it to get information about this issue or are whistleblowers the only way. or that it's almost impossible to get information the moment you step foot in since you are secret police will be following you. and will prevent or intervene to prevent any kind of independent. investigation or interviews and even more wearing go after people have talked to find those so investigators so it's impossible to do and carry out any kind of independent best occasion from sin john and china has rejected all the demands by the united nations investigators and special reporter to calm to the
3:10 pm
region what reaction are you expecting to this leak. well i think that china has been actually pretty inconsistent in its response to allegations of mass scale foundation named in the show and at some point that said there was no such thing as as the camps down it needed that there were camps but that they were not forced detention then it moved and said yes these are for detention but this is to eliminate terrorism so i think there is no we shouldn't really ask what the chinese government say's about what is happening we now have enough evidence and these elite cues is extremely important because it gives the details and the identification number of hundreds of people who were detained. and just continue to document and press the chinese government for access and for answers about the
3:11 pm
policies and scary. when the government says really doesn't matter anymore it's lost all credibility respect to what's happening to igor's and to various groups in india nicolay because i from amnesty international thank you. and staying with china another doctor in china has died after contracting the new coronavirus inable han the epicenter of the outbreak the doctors death comes as health officials in china publish details of a study into $70000.00 cases of the virus the report suggests that the number of new infections is falling so far the virus has killed just over 2 percent of those infected with older people and those who think existing condition is more likely to die but beijing more answers that could change when people start returning to daily life. let's get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world afghan president has been declared the winner of september's presidential poll following a recount ghani was reelected to

3:13 pm
press has started calling it the tesla forest and the machines felling trees here have stopped a court order has brought them grinding to a halt the environmental organization glue league says the company shouldn't be allowed to continue clear cutting before it has all the appropriate permits could use if you had just starting activities right now sets a precedent these are things that cannot be reversed after all you can't just put the trees back in the ground after you cut them down because of the. cutting has to be suspended during the bird nesting season which begins in march if tesla hasn't cleared the site by then it could delay the opening of the factory slated for next year. if it doesn't work out with tesla and i hope it does it will send a fatal signal to german companies but also to in. your national investors did say that when it comes to global competition germany has grown unable to assert itself as the right place to do business. but on social media users in other parts of the
3:14 pm
world are scratching their heads at the german delay to a major investment that would bring $3000.00 jobs tesla has already cleared 60 of the 90 head tears planned for this site the carmaker has promised to replant 3 times as many trees nearby the dispute has some people worried that tesla could withdraw from the deal the matter is being taken up by a state administrative court it'll decide on wednesday with the cutting can continue. and fizzle in from our business desk joins me now so what's the reaction from tesla here this awaiting to see what's going to be decided by the courts that could come as you heard there today tomorrow or the next few days it's a very interesting and unique situation i think for tesla specially after what it did in shanghai i mean it managed to build a gigafactory day and start rolling those model 3 days off of the band like within
3:15 pm
a year i think it was which is crazy stuff i mean but china is a very different place to germany and as you mentioned you've got this german bureaucracy to get through which is there for good reason i mean you've got communities to worry about you've got ants and reptiles and bats in those forests that people worried about and all those trees and 2nd bombs that have to be diffuse there were 7 of them but there's also jobs at stake and i mean what does it mean for the state of brandenburg if this project does indeed fall through it hang on a 2nd have you seen one of these factories i mean there aren't people in their robots building all those cars but there are a lot of people who have to build robots you have to program them so we are talking about thousands of jobs. but does the region have the expertise we're talking about brandenburg you know it's an area that is suffering with a skills shortage germany is suffering from a skills shortage so. it's going to be really interesting to see how musk goes about this in the land of cause i think he's going to be nabbing a whole lot of people from all the other comic isn't the comic is going to be
3:16 pm
worried about that it is interesting that this is taking place in front of her because there is another project that everyone might think about bradley airport you know mismanagement of that project in particular the opening of that significantly delayed. is there an issue when it comes to realizing big projects like these i don't think is it an issue in germany i think is an issue in bullett that's for sure does not have the expertise and has really stuffed up these projects like that airport my goodness i mean how many airports does china build within within a year and germany can't get one up and running just one within a year in berlin rather. it is a bit of an embarrassment we've also seen these movements against big tech companies like google the google campus that wanted to set up shop in quite spec and was kicked out basically people here are worried about rents as well as the environment they're worried about their lifestyles and they don't want to see both
