the below. i am. this is d. w. news live from berlin hundreds of passengers leave a cruise ship hit by the corona virus in japan but was the decision to detain passengers in the 1st place a mistake. also coming out lucky to be a large despite the dangers many people are still trying to reach europe in the overcrowded boat we have a special report from the rescue ship that's trying to save them. plus why are so many children working as prostitutes in the colombian city of kut to him that he that he goes undercover to find out. how old you are 16 how much is it
11:01 am
that 100 i know a place within walking distance it's safe i always go there. i'm sumi so much gonna thank you for joining us the death toll from the corona virus has now surpassed 2000 and the virus has spread to more than 20 countries around the world on 5 continents now more than 74000 people have been infected the vast majority of them have been infected on main land china now outside of china there have been more than a 1000 cases of people who have been confirmed as infected and the biggest cluster of cases has been aboard the cruise ship the diamond princess it has been in quarantine in the japanese port of yokohama for 2 weeks. now hundreds of passengers
11:02 am
who have tested negative for the virus have started leaving the ship and they are returning to their home countries. what went wrong on board the diamond princess passengers who tested negative for the corona virus are finally being allowed to leave now questions are being asked about how the floating quarantine facility became an incubator for disease. but obviously the situation on the ground to changed and clearly there's been more transmission than expected on the ship and i think the authorities in japan are adjusting to that reality now when the cruise ship 1st arrived in yokohama 10 passengers tested positive for the virus 2 weeks later more than 500 had been infected it'll be very important to study this particular event and see what the issues have been that have led to transmission to to the to the people who've been on that ship other health experts say this ship
11:03 am
has been a failed experiment in containment and want the air filtration and waste disposal systems tested as possible modes of transmission some on board described it as a floating prison one british couple shared their experiences through online videos . we're doing ok we conditioning is still getting us down we've turned off to humidify only leaving the door open but we've closed that now it's so damn cold outside. shortly after they announced they tested positive for corona virus and would be moved to a hospital. thousands still remain on the diamond princess those being evacuated now face up to 2 weeks more quarantine in their home countries. and for more on this story we can speak to simon dan your he is the washington post bureau chief in tokyo hi simon thank you for joining us here on t.w.
11:04 am
we saw there that this ship is being called a floating prison a floating petri dish what is behind the health officials a decision here to keep people on board despite the risks. well you know japan at the time the decision was was taken japan didn't have many cases of the virus it once it's to keep the people who had the virus off the japanese mainland and it felt that coren seeing was the right strategy as it turned out they haven't done it well i think the u.s. u.s. officials are now openly saying the korean team failed and actually as we look and as we know more about the way the quarantine was applied we're beginning to find out that actually it really wasn't done in a medically sound way and that the conditions on board the ship were not we're not suitable. to to to keep this many people on board the ship and in particular
11:05 am
the japanese doctor who went on board yesterday has released absolutely damning video of the conditions on board the ship which he says are chaotic i'm scary and he is not surprised that very many people have fallen sick yes i mean we have been hearing many reports of utter chaos on board and there are still hundreds of people on the spell out what is happening to them. well that they're being released as as you said the people who the foreigners are being taken back to places like the united states and canada being given another 14 days koren see because those governments don't believe that the corn seen on board the ship works the japanese patients who test negative for the virus are being allowed to leave their being and they're being allowed to board public transport the stop the new and go home so japan doesn't really want to admit that quarantine failed even when other governments basically have. made that decision the quarantine was not effective and
11:06 am
that people were still being affected on infected on board the ship it was a difficult decision but japan because they didn't have the cities for 3600 people on day one but as time went by it became increasingly clear as the number of people rose to the core i'm seeing wasn't the right strategy and i think many people felt japan was very slow to react to the changing reality yes i know what does it tell us about the japanese authorities and their ability to deal with this type of crisis do they not have the capacity to deal with an outbreak of of this size. well look you know the doctor's testimony he said that there was no experts in infectious diseases running the show on board the ship it was entirely eurocrats running the show there were no procedures he's covered he's he's treated people in eveleigh in africa in some as in china in cholera he knows how to protect people and protect himself he's never been scared before he said he was head of the
11:07 am
conditions on board the ship and he's put himself in 14 days koren see as a result of being on board that ship escaping away from his family he's keeping away from his patients so he was absolutely shocked so yes bureaucrats in control scientists being sidelined it is a little bit a case where i think the politics of the situation took precedence over the signs and simon just quickly how is this all of this going down in japan what are people there make of how the government is that with this well that that doctors video last i checked it already been seen 750000 times yesterday opinion polls coming out showing prime minister of ace popularity forming quite significantly by 5 percentage points and more and more people questioning his handling of the crisis so yes there is a real political cost to the government in wanting to avoid bad news ahead of the olympics but now it has got bad news and big questions about its handling and it
11:08 am
has to deal with them all right simon dan you're the washington post hero chief in tokyo thank you so much for speaking to us. now in turkey celebrations over the release of anti-government protesters are being dampened by the ria arrest of one prominent activist and 9 protesters targeted over the 2013 anti-government gezi park demonstrations were freed from a jail but outspoken philanthropist as money was immediately ordered back into detention on new charges. reporters waited for hours for the release of all. the philanthropists and activists was jailed in late 2017 accused of organizing protests and attempting to overthrow the government on tuesday expectedly cleared and released but only for minutes he was returned to custody a new accusations of participating in a coup against president. in july 2016. it's not the 1st time such
