this is g w news. tonight a mission on the mediterranean rescuing infants from the sea we'll take you on board a migrant rescue boat as it pulls almost 300 people from the mediterranean in the middle of winter how many more will risk their lives when spring comes also coming up tonight new uncertainty as hundreds of passengers disembark from
8:01 pm
a quarantine cruise ship hit by that corona virus in japan they tested negative health officials fear the passengers could still be carriers of the virus without even knowing it and. how old are you 16 how much is it hundreds but i know a place within walking distance it's safe i always go there. why are so many children working as prostitutes in colombia goes undercover to find out and more champions league action to mind as soon as we get so i'd like to see face last year's finalist. coach julia novels my baby. will take on the real. i'm. and often it's good to have you with
8:02 pm
a desperate migrants overcrowded boats and a dangerous crossing sadly it's an all too familiar combination on the mediterranean d.w. news has been getting a close look at a rescue operation to help some of the people risking their lives to reach the sures of europe one of our reporters is on board the rescue boat ocean viking which has carried out its 3rd mission in just 48 hours off the libyan coast the ship it took 80 migrants on board today some of them infants and small children there are now almost $280.00 migrants on board and they're lucky to be alive they face an uncertain future. all right we want to go now to our correspondent. who witnessed these rescue missions over the last 48 hours good evening to you mia we're seeing the images that you filmed earlier today tell us more about this latest rescue mission. well the latest rescue mission
8:03 pm
was really tough the weather conditions were challenging we had strong wind sends to now 3 metre high waves when we approached the rev a boat we saw that was severely over 5. people with 21 women and 28 miners we had 3 women who are pregnant and the driver of the fast rescue boat. where i was. he did i think it just the credible credible job it does it's pretty. balanced as best so that the refugees would come over from their boat. it was really a dangerous situation because if you hit the boat off the refugees they're both going to break that if they're refugees that have fell fell out of the water so the
8:04 pm
rescue operation occurred near an old platform and there was also other ships present but no one did anything and today i started a new career i had to. make sure that 5 children in my that there were lots of aboard that there will state in the in our rescue boats you know it was a really intense situation yeah i'm well i'm sure that those children if their parents were them were glad that you were there helping to save them what happens to these migrants next to me i mean we're able to ship bring them and will they even be allowed to go on shore. well this is really a great question and. i don't have an answer and i think no one has it we have an answer the ocean biking has sent a request for a place of safety to the libyan authorities with a mouthpiece and italian authorities poppy i don't expect tripoli to be responsive
8:05 pm
they haven't been responsive in the last days and weeks we may also see even mold boats in distress in the ouse and they so calm that that means that more rescue operations are going to come meanwhile dr without bobus in the field in libya have confirmed that the port of tripoli was hit yesterday by missile strikes and that over 400 people have been forced back due to detention in the past 24 hours off to be intercepted at sea but that didn't post don so what is going to come next i don't have not and you know you you've had a chance to talk with the team there on board the ocean viking and what do they say one of the biggest challenges for them as they attempt to rescue michael it's. well they're working day and night many of them up. they just need
8:06 pm
a couple of hours of sleep but if you have one rescue mission after the others you know you just cannot sleep you have to make sure that somebody is taking care of those refugees the doctors taking care of them and i think the medics also reporting in i think this is a new information the medics are reporting having seen rewards from violence related injuries that patients report to having been sustained during that time in libya so this is another proof that you know those people who left libya that they had no other possibility to do anything else that there was nothing at this point to. a corresponding new drugs or it she's reporting tonight from on board the ocean viking also as he said having to help save some of those children who were being rescued from the waters mia thank you. oh
8:07 pm
now to the corona virus the death toll from the virus now officially named code 19 is top 2000 including 2 deaths from the virus now in iran the virus has spread to more than 20 countries around the world on 5 continents as you see right there more than 75000 people have been infected the vast majority of them remain right there in mainland china about 74000. more than 1000 cases have been confirmed outside of china you know the biggest cluster of them has been aboard the cruise ship the diamond princes it has been in poor into you know the japanese port of yokohama for 2 weeks hundreds of international passengers aboard the ship they are now on their way home. passengers have tested negative for the corona virus a finally allowed to leave the diamond princess questions are now being asked about how the floating quarantine facility became an incubator for disease. an expert on
8:08 pm
infectious disease control was invited on board to inspect the ship's response to the outbreak with completed cerdic and some clues had a fever they went to the medical center while reading and 95 mask but he didn't have any protection between his room and the medical room he says he was worried about catching the virus while on board the vessel and say stuff it failed to take adequate measures to halt its spread. in site princess diana went out with scared i was so scared of getting caught between 19 because there was no way to tell where the pharisees no green zone no red zone everywhere could have virus and everybody was not careful about it when the ship 1st arrived in new york a hama 10 passengers tested positive for the virus 2 weeks later more than 500 have
8:09 pm
now been infected japan has defended its response. with the urgency of the current situation japan has taken full measures to ensure prevention of the spread of infection taking into consideration human rights and humanitarian needs cooperating with the relevant nations and taking appropriate measures with. someone board have described it as a floating. prison one british couple shared their experience via social media. we're doing ok we really are conditioning is still getting us down we've turned off to humidify and we're leaving the door open but we've closed that now it's so damn cold outside. shortly after they announced they tested positive to coronavirus and would be moved to a hospital shortly. thousands still remain on the diamond princess for those evacuated the jennys far from ivan they still face up to 2 weeks quarantine in
8:10 pm
their home countries. were earlier we spoke with the washington post bureau chief in tokyo simon deng and we asked him why japanese health officials had decided to keep people on board the diamond princess despite the high risk of them being infected with the coronavirus bill you know japan at the time the decision was was taken in japan didn't have many cases of the virus it wanted to keep the people who had the virus off the japanese mainland and it felt that coren seeing was the right strategy as it turned out they haven't done it well i think the u.s. u.s. officials are now openly saying that currin team failed and actually as we look at as we know more about the way the quarantine was applied we're beginning to find out that actually it really wasn't done in a medically sound way and that the conditions on board the ship were not we're not suitable. to to to keep this many people on board the ship the people who the
8:11 pm
foreigners are being taken back to places like the united states and canada being given another 14 days koren see because those governments don't believe that a coin seen on board a ship works the japanese patients who test negative for the virus are being allowed to leave they're being and they're being allowed to board public transport this afternoon i go home so japan doesn't really want to admit that quarantine failed even when other governments basically have both made that decision that the quarantine was not effective and of people were still being affected on infected on board the ship it was a difficult decision but japan because they didn't have to sit. 3600 people on day one but as time went by it became increasingly clear as the number of people rose that wasn't the right strategy and i think many people felt that i was very slow to
8:12 pm
react to that changing reality and that was the washington post tokyo bureau chief so i mean you're speaking with this earlier well here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world turkey's president richard tell you a better one has threatened to launch a military operation in syria's live region everyone says an operation is only a matter of time unless syrian forces pull back behind turkish military positions russia has warned turkey not to attack syrian forces meanwhile a court in turkey has postponed its verdict in the trial of a group of human rights activists accused of aiding terrorist groups a german citizen. is among the defendants detained back in 2017 while attending a digital security workshop the verdict is now expected to come in early april in mexico thousands of people have attended the funeral of a 7 year old girl whose brutal murder outraged the country the girl is believed to have been abducted as she left school last week amid the public outcry of all

makers have approved an increase in prison sentences for femicide and abuse of minors. we're now to colombia where many in the popular tourist city of kut to him are concerned about the growing number of children who are being forced into prostitution the problem has been deepening has come to india sunny beaches attract more and more international tourists but a local group of residents is pushing back to break up under age prostitution rings . nicole for others sent us this report. during the day of the heinous duns with its vivid colors and vibrant caribbean charm a picture perfect holiday destination for tourists from all over the world but when the sun goes down things change. as night falls sex workers flood the squares
8:14 pm
popular with foreigners many of them far too young to be doing this as a d.w.i. undercover reporter finds out after just a couple of minutes on the central. how well do you 16 how much is it 500 i know a place within walking distance it's safe i always go there the city's booming tourism sector has helped many families secure their livelihood but the wish to escape poverty has created a blind spot when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable. for nando who wishes to remain anonymous was 13 when strangers 1st offered him money for sex. are going through when i saw the money i obviously gave him i didn't anticipate the harm it would do to me. but once you enter this vicious cycle which it undoubtably is you can't escape on your own you need tools and people who can get you back on the right track. in
8:15 pm
colombia prostitution is illegal before the age of 18 the fight against sexual exploitation of children is regulated by law but legislation wasn't able to protect fernando and thousands of others from becoming victims. to shield young people from those who want to take advantage of them a local foundation has launched the campaign. i am the wall. for yours and i think you're a lot more honest so you know is a defense strategy for all boys and girls in the tourism sector environments there are protocols and codes of conduct we also have service providers especially hotels to input. in coordination with the authorities that's the reaction part. also doesn't put in prevention work and it tends minors whose rights have already been violated and. since its launch hundreds of hotels taxi drivers and street vendors have joined the initiative one of them is victor he runs
8:16 pm
a beachhead rental and feels like much more than just another brick in the wall. who knew about this problem. if we see something we make sure to tell people hey listen what you're doing is wrong we need to protect our children we can't put them in the hands of criminals when i do this from my heart nobody is forcing me this is community and when i want for my community i fight with my heart my hands my feet my teeth with all i have. but not everybody is as dedicated as victor our undercover reporter was offered sex with a minor just metres away from 2 patrolling policeman proving once again that it takes a village to protect a vulnerable child but only one person to let it fall through the cracks. where the u.k.
8:17 pm
government has published proposed new immigration regulations that will restrict access for workers wanted to enter the country from the european union after the breaks a transition period ends that's the end of this year it's one of the big promises the government made during the departure from the european union my colleague on the t.v. she joins me here at the big table with more on this what is this all about is the 1st real bicep price if you like from the beginning of january next year people from the e.u. who want to go and work in the u.k. in exactly the same footing as people from anywhere else in the world what they're talking about is to try to would use the number of people going into the u.k. altogether. and certainly to reduce the number of low skilled low wage migrants who go there to work now in order to do this they've introduced a point system which they say is similar to one that used to be used at least in australia so let's take a look at the points there's a whole list of characteristics which are only these immigration points you have to
8:18 pm
have all of these 1st 3 ones you have to have a job offer you have to be working at an appropriate skill level and you have to speak enough english to do that job those 3 together give you 50 points you need to earn 20 more to get into the u.k. next comes a section on money you have to earn at least $20480.00 pounds a year the more you earn the more points you get and finally qualifications if your job is within an occupation where there's felt to be a shortage of workers you get points you also get points if you have a ph d. and more if that ph d. is in science technology engineering or math now what's missing from all this is really the low skilled low wage workers now there's lots of them in the u.k. and their needs are let's listen to the government's home secretary and then also to the opposition labor party spokeswoman on this with basically redefines our immigration policy so the brought in the best people with skills need to come to
8:19 pm
the u.k. and we will no longer have the routes for cheap low skilled labor that obviously has dominated immigration on our labor market for far too long in this country. they think that the level of your salary per move how valuable your worry is what do you have what we know that there are people in relatively low paid occupations like social care who are you and why you or and when you 1st make it keep people out there i mean they are there redefining the policies there and these loose skilled workers are they talking about i mean what are your. what kinds of jobs what kinds of things do they do well the classic one of the people who come and pick all the fruits and vegetables in the u.k. often for peanuts quite frankly and the other ones the last lady was talking about is really the people who come workers nurses or care workers now we have reaction
8:20 pm
also on this from unison which is the main trade union in the u.k. the represents care workers and they say that here we go suddenly ending this desperately needed supply of labor will cause huge problems across the country because you just simply cannot going to have the people that's what they're saying what about the employers they've also been reacting obviously because they face you know potentially a labor shortage the government paper has been talking about just in the u.k. economy saying it's been reliant for too long and too heavily on e.u. workers coming in and working for small amounts of money they used the phrase in this paper employers will need to india adjust. there's obviously put the cat among the pigeons and we've got reaction here from the confer confederation of british industry which represents many employers in the u.k. and they said that in some sectors firms will be left wondering how they will
8:21 pm
recruit the people they need to run their businesses so they're obviously very concerned about this too now there's no route being enabled or being being mapped out here for lower skilled workers to come into the u.k. and the paper that i've been looking at today from the government makes it clear that they don't include intend to create any loopholes for them to come in early think this is going to play out here where you've got a couple of different options either the british government or the british economy sorry are going to have to start paying people better wages so that they get people to come in from the e.u. also they can attract domestic workers from the from the u.k. to do the g.e. these jobs or they're going to have to buy a whole load of robots if we're talking about greater automation which. and i got there so i think yeah right all the other option is going to create an even greater opportunity for people to bring in these people smugglers to bring in people who are desperate who then work without any protection it's wolf a no money in a no money but hardly any wages but no protection and that's a real concern it is
8:22 pm
a concern because as we hear many times the market does find a way to get the cheap labor in even if it's illegal how likely but there's always a think you can well tonight kelly she is hosting conflict zone a program where politicians and other people in power are in the hot seat to answer tough questions the topic tonight the rise of the far right here in germany syria's guest is a member of parliament she represents chancellor merkel's party the c.d.u. he says that the party should stick to the center to the middle if it wants to defeat the forces of the far right take a look we have to be very aware that we have about 20 to 30 percent who are able and willing to vote very right wing parties and about 10 to 15 percent who are really fascists and we cannot be more right wing than the fascists are we have to really separate us from such thinking if we offer right wing candidates for chancellor to conservative people we won't win we will create opposition leaders
8:23 pm
but we will not create chanceless we will create chances and we are on the center and that interview starts right after this program conflicts on g.w. you can also see it online dot com. are here some of the other stories making headlines around the world the european union has unveiled its strategy for regulating controversial artificial intelligence technology which is known as a in all 27 member states the european commission president or so if another is calling for strict oversight of the sector saying that ai must comply with people's privacy rights prince harry and his wife meghan are to carry out their final duties as active royals in late february and march that's according to british media reports now their decision to step down means that they will no longer have an office at buckingham palace as of april 1st this year. the us rapper pop smoke has been shot dead during an apparent robbery and his los angeles home to men
