8:02 am
behind me the street is the site where the 1st shooting took place last night at around 2 around 10 o'clock police have been working through the night into the morning here. tagging evidence going in and out as well from the shisha bar where the 1st shooting took place people have been gathering overnight in small groups and now as the city is waking up. to this truly horrific morning more people are coming over and looking and you can really see the looks of shock on people's faces ok a lot of shock there in the heart out today about the details police have been releasing what have they been saying. so what's been known what's been known so far the police have not been releasing too many details just yet because this is still an ongoing investigation we do know so far is that the shootings at the 2 clubs killed 9 people the 1st shooting took place at the bar at the bar behind me the
8:03 am
suspected gunman's then fled the scene in his car drove to another part of town and opened fire at another she should bar 9 people have died from that police then launched a massive manhunt looking for the suspected shooter. released a statement recently saying that they found the shooter after found the forces that were located there shooter's residence after a tip from from somebody in the neighborhood who had seen this suspicious car who fit the that fit the description and then when they entered the apartment they found that the suspected gunman was dead as well as they found another body now police have not released any information about who the other person was or anything about about the suspect himself ok you know what you told us about the location where these customers were where the shootings took place that she. right behind you there. absolutely so what i've heard from eyewitnesses is that
8:04 am
it sounds like the the shots started taking place outside that they took place outside. these bars. there are there were also local media reports from from the site of the 2nd shooting that the gunman reportedly forced his way in or began shooting people into stop at least outside of the bar like i said before the police have not released any official information on that we expect to get a clearer picture from authorities later on in the day but that's what we've heard so far from from eyewitnesses and other local reports ok can you give us an idea. of the she's a bar in this community how important it is for the people there what about the demographics of the of the customers what kind of people are using these kind of locations. well she said hook up ours they're very popular
8:05 am
places for young people to meet and i definitely got the sense that this was this is absolutely normal place where were people went to to go hang out. and so it tends to be younger people. there are quite a lot of people from from different immigrant communities the turkish community the kurdish community. that that will frequent. the bars and things like that but they also appeal to to to a wider and younger crowd ok let's get in bring in hans here in the studio now. we have a letter that's been done a fight also a video that's been released apparently by the suspected shooter what do we know there. well we know that the police have found. these documents a document and a video apparently in which the probable perpetrator talks about his note for these
8:06 am
attacks has been some speculation from the german. newspaper. which says that there might be a right wing motive behind this attack that's very speculative the police have not confirmed any of this yet. you might say that the places of the attack places where people of foreign origin with a foreign background are likely to congregate to meet and also the area of which is an area where there is a large immigrant community or that might be an indication for this kind of motive but at the moment we don't know any of this with any confirmation from the police yet it's all speculative and ok we have to emphasize there that this is speculative right now media reports soli can you give us a perspective here this is one of the deadliest shooting here in germany in years yes we are talking about 11 dead including the probable perpetrator at the moment the most recent comparable attack was in 2016 in munich when
8:07 am
a young man went on the rampage there and 10 people were killed some years before the. shootings at schools in june by pupils at. more than a dozen people were killed so it's certainly within a range of victims of a range of severity that's very unusual in germany certainly we haven't seen anything of this magnitude for a number of years here ok let's go back to the scene in the now and rebecca rebecca what's the police investigation going to be targeting on in the hours ahead. well absolutely they're going to be looking into this video into this document that reportedly. with the suspected gunman confessed to this crime there they're really going to be trying to to narrow down a motive. perhaps if this if this has a wider probably prove it this happens to be
8:08 am
a politically motivated act the want to figure out as well if there was another network behind this if this person had had been planning this for how long or if this was a spontaneous act they're also going to be looking into probably how he got the weapons that he did there were there were reports that he had a hunting license. though like i said like we said before the police have not confirmed anything yet but they're certainly going to be wanting to look into how did he get these guns and and why did he do this very difficult day there and now rebecca stoudamire there we have some political response 1st political response the mayor of a now. making some comments should have been responses both from the mayor of toronto and from various politicians and colluding the government spokesperson here in berlin of the central government his government obviously all of these people have been expressing their shock what happened last night have been expressing
8:09 am
their condolences to the families of those people that were killed or injured in this attack and there is a sense of. not understanding what happened. in the sense of shock and disbelief that this kind of attack happened obviously as we said we don't really know much about the background gets about the extent of these. the number of victims the severity of his attack really is very rare in germany so i think you can say but the whole country is looking into it today. and you got to find all of what exactly is behind us ok we will be on the story gathering the details in the information as it comes in here at g.w. . thanks to you right now in tobacco rebecca on the scene there in more details as they come in. let's get you brief now on some the other

to be acting director of national intelligence now is a staunch supporter of the president's policies his new position puts him in charge of the nation's 17 spying agencies but critics say he has no intelligence experience as acting director grinnell would not have to be confirmed by the senate let's get more on this now with washington correspondent all over solid good morning to all over what's behind the president's move to name now as the acting director of these powerful spying agencies. or run that's a key position in the white house and you really can consider this move to be something like a reward for richard grinnell's duty in berlin as the ambassador to germany of the united states you know critics have seen him a something like president trump's agate tator in berlin but he certainly also will the very polarizing figure he was isolated in berlin as well you know diplomatically as well as the german government but then at the same time president
8:12 am
trump praised him over and over again for his job and particularly because of how he interpreted his position there is a better he wasn't really acting like a diplomat he essentially tried to tell the german the german government there what to do criticizing threatening at times whenever essentially the german policy was not in president trump's interest and so we even had some critical voices here today from democratic lawmakers who said that that's elevating trump's lapdog is what one lawmaker said and that shows that the republicans care more about loyalty than national security obviously tackling the fact that richard grenell has no experience in intelligence spots on the other hand for trump he's a loyalist and someone he can really count on over we'll be right back to talk with you about a major debate the 2nd us democratic party hold as nine's presidential debate
8:13 am
wednesday night with the top 6 candidates vying onstage as they look to be the nominee to take on president trump in this year's election the former mayor of new york city billionaire michael bloomberg appearing in his 1st debate after rising sharply in the polls he's been countries just days before voters in the state of nevada go to the polls in the 3rd contest of the democratic party's primary season . well bloomberg came under sharp attack from his rivals here's how he defended his bid for the nomination and i'm a philanthropist who didn't inherit his money but made his money and i'm spending that money to get rid of donald trump the worst president we have ever had and if i can get tacked on it will be a great contribution to america and to my ok michael bloomberg there throwing down the gauntlet how does he do in his 1st presidential debate. he's quite an unusual candidate and that money he spent in his ads some $300000000.00 more than
8:14 am
all the other candidates is all his own money so he doesn't except that he did nations in he's not planning to accept donations in the future so the democratic national committee had to change the rules for him to be allowed to the debate tonight and he will certainly attack full of that in criticized by all the other contenders essentially that were arguing that bloomberg is trying to buy the election he was criticized there for his wealth for unreleased tax returns also for how his company treated women and it was his 1st debate and you could really tell that he was lacking experience on the on the on the debate stage but on the other hand his ads seem to work and he's currently the 3rd strongest candidate right after bernie sanders and joe biden ok bernie sanders joe biden what were some of the take for you from the debate in light of these other candidates the 5 other
8:15 am
challengers. right well it was a very fiery debate more fiery than recent debates perhaps and that is also because it's just a few days 3 until the nevada caucus and super tuesday is around the corner that certainly is watershed moment because some of the most populous us states will vote on the democratic candidate and interesting bernie sanders who is currently the leader in polls was not necessarily the person most at tact your on the stage 2 everyone else was rather focusing on groom bergen in addition the candidates took on each other like amy kohl bush are again speed good to judge elizabeth warren had a strong performance but the real winner perhaps your today was bernie sanders who was really able to sell his progressive ideas and nobody was really hindering him ok all over thanks much for that from washington this is still to come on the show
