this is d w news live from berlin tonight here in germany after the hate crime in a far right extremist shoots and kills 10 people in its hell near frankfurt the gunman walked into 2 bars in the city of hama and killed his victims execution style prosecutors are treating it as an act of domestic terrorism german chancellor angela merkel has expressed her condolences. to gather with people across the whole of germany i share with a deep pain shall today find that people have hung out over the brutal deaths of so

many of our fellow citizens and the german president from. joining other political leaders today to lay wreaths at the crime scenes he said that he stands with all those who are threatened by racist hatred adding you are not alone. it's good to have you with us we begin tonight with a community here in germany that is reeling from the deaths of 10 people in a terror attack a suspected far right extremist with a gun walked into 2 bars in the city of canell which is near frankfurt he targeted people of color and he shot them execution style the suspect a 43 year old german man who national police have named as toby as are said to have
8:02 pm
later killed his mother and himself in their report. the morning after in hanoi. residents woke up to speculation that far right extremism motivated attacks in their neighborhood the severity of the incident is being felt far beyond the city strong condemnation from the german chancellor. racism is poison he. and this poison exists in our society and it is to blame for far too many crimes already. at 10 o'clock last night local time the shooter opened fire in a hookah bar and killed 4 people before driving to a 2nd venue where he shot dead 5 more people the bar owner son describes what happened. it was like a massacre. around page there was blood everywhere people on the ground. my kids and i were in good spirits. i live 100 meters

from here and when i went upstairs i had 567 shots that's what i saw and. i know i was at st john's of some sort on the one hand you feel a bit powerless and on the other hand i don't want to call it fear but it's something like that that you have to be afraid to go out to go to a bar but also a good. many of the victims are believed to be of turkish or kurdish descent. prosecutors say the gunmen had a motive following the discovery of a confession letter the attack is being treated as an act of terror the suspect had uploaded a video to you tube a few days earlier in which he expressed his extremist ideology the suspect along with his 72 year old mother were later found dead in his home. police are

searching the property and seizing items of interest as part of their investigation might overload from the feds he looked out of the window and saw a lot of police officers. around 25 to 30 with 20 cars. and dogs and they were running around on. the attack comes amid growing concerns about far right violence in germany investigations are ongoing. and there are so many questions tonight to talk about those questions of possible answers i'm joined now by dick lobs he's a journalist a writer and it's all maker who specializes in documentaries dealing with far right extremism and violence here in germany good to have you on the program let me just start by asking i mean what were your 1st thoughts when you heard about this attack
8:05 pm
and. well i wasn't surprised we are my friend warning that more attacks will be coming for some time now along with colleagues and other experts because the situation is so dire and to some extent the situation is out of control so i wasn't surprised. and you say you've been warning that the far right scene is growing in this country. and your warnings have they fallen on deaf ears. well the problem is you know we had the big scandal with the underground terrorist group and it's you a couple of years ago 8 and a half years ago and then after that you know it was a group running around killing migrants in germany and after that we had you know dozens of parliamentary commission is looking into that case and we found out that the interior the secret service is sort of playing their own game and covering up mistakes and so all the energy of the authorities that supposed to protect us went into covering up their mistakes and that's a big problem you know we're not focused on the issue at hand and also i think the
8:06 pm
german authorities are sort of turning a blind eye to the to the fact that we have to have a that we always had a message right problem here that's nothing new you know if it's a huge group much bigger than jihadi violent new nazis in this country there is concern that here in germany the security services i mean from the police all the way up you know to be indeed that these services are infested with people who are sympathizers with the far right. what is your opinion and has anything been done to basically to find out who these people are and to change that situation. well not enough action writing a book about that right now and when i started doing my research i was sort of skeptical i thought maybe it's like an hyped up topic but it's really a problem you have lots of cough soldiers offices that are clearly right wing activists and you know if looking into the investigations in that matter and so we
8:07 pm
not satisfying it's not professional enough you know there's a lot of weapons a stolen ammunitions a stolen their right wing chats with soldiers and police and men are joining in you know it's just it's just not a situation that sustainable for germany and it's not and i think clearly the situation is not under control and it's a big i think it's a big problem and it's not under control of the government in this case what what we understand is that socially he was somewhat of a loner but online he was very active do you think that security forces are they equipped as well as they should be to patrol and to surf the web to find suspicious characters perhaps as this government would have been. i strongly doubt it because you know it's a global movement you know you have to think globally you have to understand that you're facing is almost like the jihadi movement you know islamic terrorists you know they're inspiring each other online they're looking at each of the videos at the polls facebook everything and you have to think global to sort of understand
8:08 pm
what's going on we had christchurch's we had another right wing attack and how that and i don't think that the german security services are really up to the to the task at hand because they're sort of trying to catch up with the old style right wing terrorists and you haven't done so successfully and now they have like this new style terrorists so they're really overwhelmed i think you know we also we hear it many times not only here in germany but across the atlantic in the united states that security services they just they're not as willing to go after domestic terrorism as they would be against you know foreign sources of terrorism jihad as for example as you say why do you think that is is it because the investigators sometimes are having to look for people who look and sound just like them. well i think if you look at the u.k. and the u.s. the stories they're slowly coming around every day f.b.i. clearly says that white supremacy terrorism is the biggest threat to the u.s.
8:09 pm
in terms of domestic terrorism the same is happening in the u.k. right now and germany has to catch up and made it may be a problem i think that they don't want to i spoke with a lot of experts i'm speaking with a lot of investigators and they know that the biggest threat always has been the right wing movement because there's so many of them and they don't want to put that message out to scare the people that's why they were so you know silent in the past years but now as it has become apparent that the situation is somewhat out of control and bear in mind we have a big party in the the parliament that actually works together was right when terrorists and yet the public accept that situation somehow so this is really i think a lot of things have to change in germany pretty quickly in order to get the situation under control you know what you described there is is very troubling. journalist and author and documentary maker with sharing his insights tonight with far right and far right violence here in germany there thank you. finke you feel as if
8:10 pm
germany mourns the victims of this latest far right attack your frankfurt world leaders have been expressing their sympathies. for the gunman's rampage has reverberated far beyond germany many of his victims were of turkish descent president wretch of type offered a message of support. express my condolences to our expired traits who lost their lives in the german city of hono last night. i was patients for their families and friends. i believe that the german authorities will make every effort to shed light on all angles of this attack. european leaders gathered in brussels for a budget summit also offered sympathy and denounced the attacks yes i can see it on t.v. we say very clearly that xenophobia and racism have no place in europe and that this
8:11 pm
despicable and cowardly act is against everything we stand for and. i want to express france's support and solidarity and i wish to stand by their sides in this sad time of grief also in the fight against hatred and racism that is being strongly led by the chancellor and also by most of the german political establishment surgical support secure. us a misuse of ship was a horrible right wing radical terrorist attack that took place in germany which must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and it also shows us that it is important that we continue to fight against all forms of radical thought in europe let's keep. this comes as far right parties are surging in many european countries while germany mourns the latest victims of extremist attacks. the german president joined other political leaders earlier today to lay wreaths near the site where the
8:12 pm
government carried out his attack later the president spoke at a vigil for the shooting victims. just be seen as. this year old enough to be seen is some of what happened last night here in hanoi has left us stunned as. they make so sod on these milestones songs and it makes us angry busker sheen is this is what happened was terrible just what happened is something that we all fear most deeply. losing people who we love the dimensions of our lead an image. need sky no nothing can take away our pain and nothing can explain this senseless act nothing can only do it. when you see. and observing the president there speaking earlier yes it's been a horrific day here in germany near the site of the shootings in our very own kate
8:13 pm
brady she's covering that side of the story force and here at the big table with me is our chief political editor because let me start with you we just heard part of what the german president there said they're calling this an act of domestic terrorism so what's the reaction then to be an act of domestic terrorism well 1st of all people came out onto the streets here and across more than 50 towns and cities to demonstrate this so that darsie with those victims 1st and foremost saying that they simply won't stand for this society going this way and we also had steinmeyer have would be cool and everybody just sat in the responsibility now to stop individuals being singled out minorities being singled out and tackle this hatred so a lot of big what this evening but a nation still clearly in shock about where you are there you're basically at the
8:14 pm
site of where you know the killings took place what are people say. he's actually a friend i'm stood right in front of well that 1st of the 2 shootings took place last nice and it's very much the same feeling here a feeling of shock but also one of frustration particularly as i've been talking throughout the day to members of the turkish community here and many of them say that this is fresh ration that lingers on as many of them now descendants children grandchildren even all of turkish people who moved here in the fifty's and sixty's and they are german and they still struggle to feel completely accepted here and feel that they're still discriminated against and only considered to be hof and german and so of course this is very much a bigger question of identity in germany and one that needs to be questioned and also answered in the coming weeks we understand it was their skin color or their
8:15 pm
ethnicity that made them a target for this gunman what more do we know about the gunman tonight. well investigations are still underway but we know that prior to this shooting at last night's he had indeed retin-a left that missing to the fact that he had carried out the shooting and also in the days ahead of this terrorist attack he actually posted a video online in which he also expressed some fall rights ideology but we're also waiting for more details about his background and how it seems he became radicalized became part of the far right extremist see here in germany and you're seeing there about you've got this german man who's on one gets radicalized you heard our 1st guest there the filmmaker is saying that the situation is out of control here in germany that that's an extreme. is that correct.
8:16 pm
that isn't an extreme assessment i don't think it's out of control i think you know germany is still look at the statistics a very safe country at the same time he did describe that there was kind of a lack of lessons being drawn from the and assumed where basically a far right extremist terrorists were able to kill people in broad daylight for decades and the authorities didn't or didn't want to catch on to it now i think there has been a learning curve what we saw happen last night is we saw the prosecutor general take this case on very very swiftly seeing its magnitude but also the far right extremist direction this was going into powers have also been drawn to the christ church tax and zealand religious and now at the main priority right now is to find out whether this guy really was as lonely as it is it seems because he clearly would have been in contact in his own bubble among the line exchanging conspiracy
8:17 pm
theories that at the very least and whether there is an active or passive network behind this but quite clearly the fall of extremism that we saw here today is far from being the full extent that exists in germany definitely more questions than answers tonight is for sure ok me hillock of me here in the studio with me and. the site of the shootings you know views on brady to both of you thank you. well in what is being described as a surprise move u.s. president donald trump has appointed the current u.s. ambassador to germany richard grinnell as the acting intelligence chief in charge of the u.s. is spying agencies the move has been criticized because of his complete lack of experience in intelligence however took to social media he wrote that grinnell had done quote exceedingly well in representing the u.s. abroad and that he looks forward to working with richard grinnell.
8:18 pm
what to make of this decision let's go now to washington a corresponding public joins me now good evening to you pablo so what's been the reaction so far to this surprise appointment where you are. well i don't repeat what you've just said brant but surprise is definitely the word that i've heard quite a lot also shock is what's being used quite a lot to describe the appointment of ambassador grinnell's and the reason for this is the apparent lack of you know relevant experience and it's very interesting to hear from particularly democrats in fact one in particular that senator mark warner he's the top democrat on the senate intelligence committee and he said the president a selected an individual with any intelligence experience to serve as the leader of the nation's intelligence community in an acting capacity and now also critics of
8:19 pm
this appointment have said that it's been handed to ambassador grinnell because he's a staunch trump loyalist who has been particularly vocal in his calls for a conservative empowerment and for reasons. you know it's very clear that he's not going to be very unusual in his position as the acting intelligence chief which is another reason for a lot of this criticism. but the white house has said the colonel will actually take a non partisan approach brant. public holiday leo's on the story in washington probably think you. well here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world roger stone the longtime advisor and ally of u.s. president donald trump has been sentenced to 40 months in prison for 7 counts of lying to congress obstruction and witness tampering charges stemming from an

investigation into alleged collusion between russia and the truck campaign during the 2016 presidential election the u.s. billionaire michael bloomberg came under attack at his 1st democratic presidential debate on wednesday night rival candidates blasted the former new york city mayor over allegations of sexism and over his record on race bloomberg argued that he was the democrats' best chance of beating donald trump in november. at least 85 people have been rescued from a blazing building in me and mars commercial hub. the 12 story building in the chinatown area contains apartments in several stores as you see right there safety standards are considered low in the city's downtown after years of under investment. the berlin film festival the belly nala as it's known is now underway it's the

where the party has just under way right now as we speak right of course david and i had an opportunity in the press screenings often need to see it is something like devil wears prada through a need to rary prison if it tells the story of a young aspiring poet who has to new york city with those big mystery jury she's played by moderate quality of course for once upon a time in hollywood by tearing when she gets to the big apple though she starts to realize that what she's going to do is anything but quite as glamorous as it's because sigourney weaver plays the miranda priestly if we're going to still go yeah right devil wears prada. who puts her to work answering letters addressed to j.d. salinger who is her client of course the reclusive author doesn't want fan mail and so margaret callie's character is is responsible for basically writing to all these poor souls who connect with holden caulfield from the couch on the right writes to them saying well we're not going to respond to you and we're not going to forward
8:23 pm
your mail either to j.d. salinger but along the way she starts to connect with some of their letters and feel that they may be deserve a better response than that and on the whole i think especially say that the film is a kind of love letter in itself to a bygone era in new york and i have to say you guys are spot on with this comparison about the devil wears prada because it looks exactly like that film we asked about the jury the jury was presented today with some cinema royalty who is in charge. right jeremy irons the british actor is presiding over the jury this year that will be watching the films in competition and selecting the winner for the coveted golden bear or word journey irons great actor big name a bit of an honor to pick this year especially since the valley knowledge is a very political festival and he's an older white guy who said some strangely off color things about women about gay marriage yeah that's certainly something i mean

he tried to set the record straight on immediately were at the opening press conference this morning i don't waste it living a kind of shakespearean citic we for which of course you know he was famous he tried to set the record straight on those issues brian i mean taken to what he had to say. i support wholeheartedly the global movement to address the inequality of women's rights and to protect them from abusive damaging and disrespectful heris munt i applaud the legislation of same sex marriage wherever it has been a tame and suddenly i support how hotly the rights of women to have an abortion should they so decide ok there is jeremy irons there telling us what he wants us to know about him but there are other characters connected with the bill and although who are providing lots of talk and can link for scandal tell
8:25 pm
us about that. right well this is the 70th edition of the berlin international film festival the festival started in post-war brylin under the american military authority and the 1st director of the festival i floated by our in recent weeks it turns out was more connected to the nazis than than we previously know now there was a price that was connected to his name the alfred award in light of this coming to light his position within the nazi party that prize has now been suspended by the committee here it remains to be seen i think whether that controversy will continue to cost a shadow over this festival over the coasts often x. 10 days all right lots to talk about the berlin wall is now underway helena humphrey and david leavitt's we will be talking with you in the next hour and tonight on the day see that. all right here is a reminder of the top story that we are following for you germany is in mourning
