out to contain the virus. the cases we see in the rest of the world although the numbers are small but the north to link to china it's very worrisome although the window of opportunity is not all we need to contain the outbreak we still have a chance to contain it but we're doing that we have to prepare the same time for any eventualities because this outbreak could. it could even be messy. the latest country to report deadly cases of the virus is iran where many fear that the number of deaths and infections is higher than the figures being reported by the authorities. concerned about the virus and afraid that it may spread here in iran i'm wearing a mask and gloves and washing my hands more often as a precaution against infection by the. iranian officials are working to quell

fear of the virus and i've asked the country's media to coordinate their reporting with the health ministry. let's bring in virologist alexander who joins us from the german city of hama professor thank you so much for joining us so as we just heard in our report to the w h o in saying it's very concerned about new cases of corona virus that may not have any link to china especially what we're seeing in iran do you think this is a signal of a new phase of the corona virus outbreak. actually this phase has begun quite some weeks ago already. knew already that this is taking place and now we have evidence that this is taking place people have been warning about this all the time and i think we in europe especially we really began quite late to stop to start controlling people at the ports and do some measurements to contain the outbreak
5:05 pm
here in other countries like iran or in african countries and i think they have not many means to do anything don't even have to tests for this new virus so i think we will be just watching how this virus. continues spreading there well we also heard of the saying that the window of opportunity to contain the virus is closing so what can governments around the world do. this really depends on where you are. a lot of violence your health system is in europe you have many opportunities like of the united states the most important thing in my view in my view is really to have a lot of tests in the country and the possibility of testing everybody who has signs of this disease because now it is clear that not only the connection to a traveler from china is important but also people who don't have any apparent
5:06 pm
connection might be infected i called this hint. it's very important to know what happens in the country and it's not only a question of what you do if you're porto's other countries like africa contraries india and also in salt asia they have a much bigger problem because i think the numbers have been gone up there already they don't notice it yet and i think. significant all these countries we were noticing within a few weeks from now well we've heard from chinese have authorities that the incubation period of the virus could possibly be longer than the 2 weeks previously assumed this could make things very difficult indeed how likely is it. no you have only very faint about as and chinese authorities have been reporting many things which turn out to be not so exactly right afterwards i would i would
5:07 pm
really wait and stay with a 2 week incubation period for the moment being that is enough pressure on the people who are isolated or caring time but it is measurement when you remember the people on this on this cruise ship when it really stressful conditions you have to keep in mind that they hope will break is at the end only only a disease it's a disease and what makes this disease a disaster is really our reaction if we overreact if you produced panic if you have a lot of collateral damage in this social area then it really becomes a disaster and you have to really focus on those things which are necessary and devoid overdoing it there ologist alexander we appreciate your insights thank you. let's get a check now of some of the other stories making news around the world counting is

now to commemorate the victims of the attack on wednesday night. the large crowd of demonstrators are also taking a stand against far right violence and page. but here goes i was already enough lived here for 25 years and i've never seen anything like this tributes to the dead continue to be laid. but amid the grief there is anger and frustration at germany's politicians. that there are still enough people especially in the broad sense who have remained quiet who haven't spoken all clearly against racism and i think that's a problem in germany. somehow now i would like saab on so called the kaaba feel that action rather than gestures is what's needed to address far right extremism. just couldn't view of course we as citizens can really take to the streets and hold

back on is and demonstrate against it. but it's our country germany has to do something about it. most. people gathered in one hour hoping their show of solidarity will prompt germany's politicians to back up their words of condemnation with concrete measures to ensure public safety. and w.'s political correspondent kate brady is standing by for us in now now kate so we saw in that report it seems that quite a number of people turned out for today's demonstration what was the message that protesters had. well there were 2 real messages of course the weekend has provided locos here with a chance to unite as well now everyone's off work to show solidarity this weekend and remember the victims who lost their lives on wednesday evening but the main message at the demonstration today was to show

a stance against fall rights extremism here in germany but interestingly enough many demonstrators were also carrying placards criticizing the far right posse with many people reiterating what we've heard from some politicians over the last couple of days as well in their criticism of the far right a.f.d. for their role in normalizing far right rhetoric here in germany in recent years and those now increasing calls for the a.f.p. to be put under surveillance. all right so german politicians have acknowledged that the country does have a problem with extremist far right elements one thing they've now suggested is security around the country kate how do locals feel about this idea is it going to give them an added sense of security. well from the people i've spoken to the

opinion really is very much still divided on the issue well some people have welcomed the fact that the government at least seems to be trying to take some action to tackle extremism here in germany others say it's simply not enough and at the same time many people that i spoke to here particularly those 04 and just sent have said that they don't want to have that feeling that they need police protection they want to be able to go about their everyday lives like everyone else so not since they want to see a fundamental rethinking of how immigration migration identity is handled here in germany because they many of them see themselves for 1st and foremost as germans and want to live just like everyone else regardless of their skin color or regardless of what their name might be. brady in hanno we appreciate your reporting . well voting is underway in togo as presidential elections with incumbent ford nothing but widely expected to secure
