have to conning plan to get rich. take a 1st look at 1st. imagine the wild west only without the wild no stagecoaches attacks no indian tribe exterminated. and yet there is something threatening in the year the whole time. that is the great achievement of the 1st really good film in this year's competition. for american director kelly reichardt this isn't the 1st time she's made such an atypical western she's just not into gunslingers it's really just a story about friendship and a cow. that's right account a rich businessman brings her to oregon then she inspires 2 friends a cook and a chinese immigrant to develop

a business idea they steal the cows milk at night use it to bake delicious cookies and sell them at inflated prices yes the 1st cow becomes a cash cow in london. meanwhile there's this new economy coming in and that's. going to. wipe out the resources the natural cigarettes but at the same time that you're going to wipe out all the 1st people in the area. the businessman one of those looking to exploit that new economy is amazed that he's cow gives so little milk and eventually suspects foul play with this thread and excellent film is patiently guided into a dramatic turn the rocket has no place for widescreen vistas in a film she shot it in the same aspect ratio as old fashioned t.v. . i think it's a more intimate frame and it works for the economy of the movie the character

what's in the movie the the characters i think it's a actually preferred for closeups. first cow is a subtle clipper film about the american dream its message is that for bad dream to live at least one other must die. or get some 1st impressions now and 1st our g.w. film i mean as it is covering all the action for us on the better than all the red carpet this weekend i mean you got to see that this rather nontraditional western film in a guy got a lot of free festival buzz did the film live up to the hype. well put it like this carl i am finally in the 1000000000 other spirits you know this festival had kind of a slow start for me wasn't enjoying the 1st few films as much that i thought i would and then finally 15 minutes sitting into this film 1st cow i thought there it is the moment when i realized the director is smarter than me and i kind of gave
10:13 pm
myself this story a little bit of that had to do with just the the beauty of the film the historical detail the attention put into it in the film just for an example the director kelly reichardt sent the 2 main actors to a historical reenactment camp where they actually had to learn to make the crafts that they make in the film so that gives you an idea of how much work she put into it also at the center of this film is a story that's just beautiful it's about the relationship between 2 adult men and not in a situation of war or fighting over a woman just a natural relationship between 2 men and it's funny that it took a female director to tell that story well that's like a cow to finally get you excited about the belly now. this will have some stiff competition for that although there are 17 other films in the running for that award how does. well it's still just day 3 this is a long festival there's a lot of good movies with high expectations out there but i'll just say that if the

jury is looking for a well made film with good acting good cinematography then they found a film here and i hope that they consider it. a few more films on tap right now i understand it's time to dust off your friends to talk about these next films. that's right there's a film by philippe fail called the salt of tears and he's one of the lesser known but still prominent members of the french new wave movement some of them have even died because this movement came out of the sixty's people like. also want to fool. so he didn't rise exactly to their level but he still considered a signature. filmmaker and he has this film that's an unflinching portrait of a man searching for love a young man who had a intense relationship with his father the film is a black and white sticks really to the roots of new wave cinema what we don't really know if we like the characters and without giving too much away don't want to spoil it for you but prepare for a very french ending ok very french ending and it looks like
