a motive is still unclear. both mars and in northern has a population $7000.00 all they wanted was to celebrate carnival at the rose monday parade instead a day of horror when a 29 year old man drove into a crowd of onlookers apparently a deliberate act. of god drove right into the crowd at full speed i had the feeling he kept accelerating people flew up into the air like paper a few seconds of deathly silence and then they all started screaming. my classmate was driven into he has an injured foot and a concussion. more than 30 people were injured some seriously several children were among the injured police say the suspect is from both mars and himself they plan to interview him as soon as his condition permits were not assuming an attack but we do think it was an intentional act we don't yet know the background the

investigation isn't far enough along to say anything about a potential motive. as a state premier appeared moved. 5 days after the terrorist attack of course it's in the back of everyone's mind my god not again but my advice is that we remain calm doesn't help anyone if we all start speculating wildly. the police canceled all carnival parade state wide following the incident authorities have set up an information hotline and appealed to eyewitnesses to send them photos and videos and to not post them anywhere else. yet for the latest now i'm joined by correspondent . rebecca what more can you tell us about what happened today for. well but police aside so far is that there are at least 30 people injured 7 of whom are have to have sustained serious wounds and that several children are also among those who were injured now what happened it

happened in the middle of the heart of all parade that was happening in town today the car struck people from from behind they had they had come to the scene behind me here there are there's a grocery store it was one of the bends in the route for the parade. the locals that just said that the parade was just about to wrap up but there was still quite a few people all packed in into this section looking watching the parade so there were quite a few people who were who were hit today when that driver drove into the crowd and rebecca we know that the u. police are saying that the driver could see these attempted homicide charges would be to have you heard from anyone about the motivation here mean why the driver did this. we haven't heard i haven't heard anything just yet about about the motive i know that police are going off of what i've
10:05 pm
witnessed statements previously said where they said that it appeared that the driver had deliberately accelerated into the crowd upon upon coming around the bend here for the carnival parade what i have heard from locals here there's been a couple of people who have wandered up to the scene still dressed in their costumes but obviously what was a joyous afternoon has turned into a really dark dark day for the people of this town people who told me that they even though they weren't there that they're they're shocked that this happened it's not something anyone would have expected on a day that's supposed to be about celebrating with with your loved ones with family and with friends and it comes just after last week's deadly shootings in the western german town of congo it happened in the same state where you are the state of has. security had been increased as a result of the terror attack that we saw west week
10:06 pm
security have absolutely been been raised security was already raised for carnival celebrations all public events actually since the since the 2016 truck attack in berlin police have been especially careful to put up blockades to put up roadblocks to to make sure that people are so that an attack like that couldn't happen again what i what people have said from people who are on the scene i witnessed is upset that the person went around the blockades that were set up here they were apparently plastic barriers. ok your correspondent rebecca wire with the latest there from the town of folk marse rebecca thank you. ode to the united states now where a new york jury has handed down the most hotly anticipated verdict of the me to hollywood producer harvey weinstein has been found guilty of felony sex crimes

a pandemic on monday saying the virus can still be contained. for the moment we are not witnessing the uncle taking the over the spread of this by this we are not meeting the sea level just curious if it is for this does this but it is part of the petition absolutely tires we did promote our system of the market the e.u. has pledged 230000000 euros to support the fight against the virus we stress that. for the moment. w.h.r. has not advised changing up imposing restrictions on other travel or trade italians could continue to face restrictions on them movements however with the prime minister warning residents could be in for weeks of lockdown. and for more tonight i'm joined by dr john campbell he's an independent health analysts he's been following this outbreak since the very beginning doctors good to have you on
10:12 pm
the program why did the world health organization not declare the coronavirus a pandemic and and doesn't even matter. yeah i think the world health organization like the rest of us have been learning about this virus as we go along because of it's in use the un zoonotic infection it's come phenomena more than it's a novel coronavirus that hasn't been recognized in humans before so to begin with things like the pathogenicity of the virus how related to disease it caused how it was transmitted all those things were clear so it's taken time to evolve in outthinking for research to be done and for the world health organization to assimilate all this information because one is that the world health organization has a balance to make between causing undue panic can distress maintaining economic wellbeing and the protection of the health of the world citizens and they still have to pick their balance i would say they've been a little bit on the cautious side this time overall and technically they don't have
10:13 pm
a pandemic classification either at the moment they would call it an international emergency i think i mean maybe this is this is a matter of semantics but what would change if the w.h.o. did declare this to be a pandemic. i think of the w.h.o. clearly said it was a pandemic that's language everyone can understand so some of the technical language and descriptive language the w.h.o. uses people don't really get the message but if you say pandemic not got an impact that really effects people and it would also affect governments around the world and i think it would trigger individuals areas and countries and governments to make much greater preparation for this virus because this virus is going to be very difficult to stop because of its transmission characteristics but what we need to do is slow it down we need to contain it and not give us more time to prepare and it also means we'll get less people who are very sick old at the same time it will be more spread out and we'll have more medical facilities available to treat people
10:14 pm
that need it or dr campbell you say that we're still learning about this virus and because of that and because we see the virus spreading shit in all countries then be handling and treating the situation as if it were a pandemic should they be preparing for outbreaks within their borders. well countries vary a lot on the capacitor they have to do this so many poor countries don't have the infrastructure set up they don't have the trained personnel they don't have the facilities in order to fully prepare for a pandemic this is part of the problem but the impression i'm getting now with the situation in south korea and italy which of course have both advanced westernized countries and they're having trouble with this disease now with the i think the penny starting to drop with all the countries around the world and they are realizing that this is a serious threat to their citizens and that this is going to come and become a pandemic so i think governments fosdyke into a pattern now it's just
