towards a pandemic fries. we believe that the risk of a global pandemic is very much upon us and as a result as a government we need to take the steps necessary to prepare for such pandemic. as the number of cases in the middle east to rise travel to holy sites in saudi arabia has been halted months in advance of the annual hajj pilgrimage. even north korea yet to report a single case is taking preventative measures closing its borders and postponing the new school term the virus is at the center and move on in china remains the west hit most of the reported deaths and cases are in the city and the surrounding who bay province. china's infection rates the virus is now spreading faster

more and more countries are reporting cases. outbreaks earlier i spoke with. a spokesman for the world health organization and i asked him why the virus is spreading so quickly in places that don't have a link to china the vast majority of all infections come from symptomatic people and from those. who we can trace back the link but it seems all we still have to understand more about possibly asymptomatic people have been transporting the virus . and then have been showing up in countries or infected without a direct link yet back to the origins of these tests and is looking into history all travelers of infection history is ongoing because we need to understand that how these infections are possible. if there is a link or if there's no link and if there's no link where these infections come from. here in germany the government is taking measures to contain an outbreak of

the virus that's after a sudden rise in infections this weekend a warning from industry of a severe impact on the economy 10 new cases have been reported since tuesday a couple is being treated at a hospital and schools and kindergartens in their town have been closed while officials try to trace the chain of infection and the government has announced interior and health officials will have a joint emergency task force to deal with what they say is an inevitable epidemic this site. shows that we are taking this outbreak of the corona virus seriously and we are reacting to a new situation that germany europe and the whole world are confronting this is the beginning of a coronavirus epidemic in germany i said this yesterday very deliberately in order to prepare ourselves for this new scenario and new developments. forts and brady is with us she's been taking a look at how germany is coping with the coronavirus we heard that they're setting

up a federal crisis unit here in germany what measures will be taken as i say we're not at this point expecting to see any large scale measures the kind of which we've seen in parts of italy for example where entire small towns or villages have been quarantined and closed off but there was some new measures announced today during the press conference for example with deportations of rejected asylum seekers back to wish to they where they originally arrived those will be temporarily halted and people returning from countries most affected by the coronavirus have been asked to contact local authorities when they return back to germany or just arrived here on the travel so that's countries like china south korea japan iran and italy but the main aim right now is to slow down the spread of the virus here in germany and to break down the chain of infection that's the main aim of this crisis commission and so you. one of the main measures that the governments are relying on people to be
3:07 pm
active in as well is self quarantine so if you know that you have been nice and one who is who is being affected by current virus to quarantine yourself at home for the 2 week period so at the moment the german government is very much taking each day as it comes as the health minister said again today we know very little about the virus right now and we're learning more and more every day we know already know more now than we did 4 weeks ago and so are the governments of the health ministry and this commission plan to then adapt the measures as they see fit as the virus develops spreads even all also doesn't how worried you think germans are about this virus germans are concerned this is something new as i mentioned we still don't know everything about it and of course there's still no vaccine at the moment but so far people seem to be acts in quite responsibly they've been approaching local health authorities if they're showing symptoms and at the same time it does seem as well that taking on board the recommendations. by the health ministry as well very

from proven prevention techniques. the world health organization is fighting back putting pressure on social media giants to place reliable sources about the coronavirus higher in search results. and the w.h.o. has launched its own public information task force. there are several measures. to protect yourself and others from getting the new coronavirus the appropriate use of math their top counter measure to dissent from ation is actually simply putting the truth out there really with soap and water for more on the story peter dials from data via social media team is with us he's been looking into the story for us hi peter this is extremely worrying and dangerous i mean why would people want to willfully spread misinformation well there are number reasons obviously we saw some of the reported ones like still cold greed so basically
3:11 pm
trying to make a quick buck off of you know other people's fears. more worryingly i think they're using the misinformation to really as a political weapon so it's to destabilize governments it's to sow distrust in authorities at a time when a lot of people are really counting on officials to tell them how to how to go about the situation how to handle deal with a crisis. in the u.s. for instance we've seen the religious right really mobilized to you know raise doubts and call into question the effectiveness of science we've seen right wing populist jump on this to really stoke anti immigrant sentiment spoke to a number of people from several asian countries who described you know racist attacks physically and verbally and just last week u.s. intelligence warned that. basically an army of trolls linked to russia

has created thousands of fake accounts that are spreading. effectively these wild allegations like this cia created the virus in order to you know wage war in the chinese economy all of these things you know effectively call into question or raise doubts about whether or not we can trust our governments a lot of reasons for misinformation none of them are good ok with that see event misinformation out there what can people do to find out what information is reliable right i mean the good news is that we're seeing especially health ministry is really stepping up they've done a pretty good job at providing providing easy to understand guidelines so definitely check out your local or your health ministries home page a lot of them have also take the social media to actively fight back against misinformation debunking myths but also use your common sense if you see some of
3:13 pm
the numbers that we saw in that report right there hundreds of thousands of deaths well checked other outlets check other major news sources are they reporting similar figures if not well but it's probably not true ok and we seem to w.h.o. it says on that report to set up this public information task force if you think that's going to be effective well i think it's actually a step in the right direction but i think the problem is also much bigger then the w.h.o. one is a problem that they can't really contain and that is the fact that it remains too easy to abuse the social media platform to weaponize information they still facebook and twitter still rely to a to great extent on their users really policing and flacking misinformation as long as that policy continues this threat is going to persist and it's definitely not helping in situations like this rank it at these dollars thank you so much for joining us here in studio. well you can find reliable information

shocking visuals of running dry it's that he was seeing coming out of the location on monday and tuesday so it has been carmel yesterday the police took out a massive flag marches through the era to reassure people that there is police presence but once again in the evening we heard reports of targeted violence against muslims the death toll has risen over the last day and reports say that it could be much higher going forward there is a lot of feel in muslims not only living in the neighborhood but in other parts of the league as well as that are rumors flying around of mob trying to attack muslim neighborhoods but it's also heartening to see that there are other neighborhoods where hindus and muslims are taking out these marches together to say that they have will stand against such violence and that also see experiences and and and and shelter being offered to muslims who are trying to flee from their neighborhoods which is also happening so the situation will have to continue being one of the

riots and not quite over yet what caused these riots i mean what led to this outbreak of violence we've seen politicians are accused of sparking the riots with inflammatory speeches is that true. well definitely some of the 1st attacks have not been documented so we're not exactly clear what was the 1st thing that provoked the riots but one piece of information that has been coming out is that there was a blue chip people edition of the g.o.p. leader who had come out in front of police threatened the protesters against the citizenship law saying that if the police doesn't clear them he will take matters into his own hands now a deadly hot at the delhi high court has called for the police to take action against other political hate speech me good me because this is not new and hate speech has been spiking from the ruling b.g.p. and this has also of course been the cause of concern because this is now it looks like nothing to do instances of violence but of course once again. and the

opposition is calling for the home minister to step down just a lot of criticism of the major piece but the party itself has not taken action against these do you know even though the delhi high court has called for such action to be taken right. reporting from delhi to michigan to talk to you. now many would say it was her oscar winning performance in the 2007 film the queen that proved that helen mirren is acting royalty but she's no one film wonder she has half a century of powerful portrayals on screen and on stage this year america is being presented with the berlin international film festivals honorary golden bear award for lifetime achievement. helen mirren has made a career out of playing strong women often standing up to men. to sound shows your truly we. thank. you. thank you. but she's
3:20 pm
a lot more relaxed in real life so what's the secret behind her stellar career so i was very lucky. and that was the truth for me but. my genetic could face honestly is beyond time and. to anyone at any time that what they are. one of the early roles was in the london gangster flick the long good friday but she was no ordinary gangsters mall. this was the early 19 eighties when strong female roles was still a rarity for many fans a career high was her majestic performance in the queen she won an oscar for her portrayal of elizabeth the 2nd dealing with public anger at the royal family's response to the death of princess diana. despite the quintessential englishness of
3:21 pm
many of her roles in view says so if it's a european it's heart a love to europe and i it was the best thing to me absolutely the best thing that we were a part of europe as opposed to what we had to sort of appendage to america you know which never felt comfortable with myself. and i will continue to be a european. thing it's a cultural thing it's interesting. and that's why she's especially happy to be receiving the golden bear at this year's barely knowledge it's a great. coming especially coming from berlin you know this is a very substantial film town mazing history of german film obviously but also. the. audience is notorious or famous let's say for its critical eye but no criticism right now just a celebration of
3:22 pm
a stellar career that has spanned more than half a century. on this planet. all right and free and scott roxboro covering the belly now let down at the red carpet for us good to see you both so guys helen mirren getting a lifetime achievement award what do you think makes her so special. yeah i mean what can you say about helen mirren i mean for me she's one of those amazing actresses that manages to be both incredibly classy and and also pretty sassy as well. this is a woman who's been queen elizabeth the 2nd and has also played the state films getting storm on a fast in the furious movie i mean i don't know what other actress has that incredible range and she showed today here here in berlin both aspects of our character her incredible class and her quite impressive size plenty of sass i mean
3:23 pm
she objectionably does have just an incredible c.v. she was one of the youngest members oh i think she was the youngest member of the royal shakespeare company in fact and then she holds this clutch of awards known as the trinity in the world of acting so she has an anything a t.v. work she's also impressed in broadway the tony award as well and of course that all sca for the queen which will be shown here in berlin and she said about the budget international film festival that it's a discerning audience here pretty critical here but of course the committee seems to love you know she's got no golden bear to add to that trinity yeah a well deserved award for helen mirren guys you both saw the latest competition film and i understand it was met with silence during the screening is that right. yeah sewerage sea or days said that's a taiwanese film it's county primary and you can see the right call to action just behind me at this time when he's film is about 2 men who meet in bangkok they have an encounter and then they flow back off into that very every day time banal lives
3:24 pm
and over 2 hours known and not a single piece of dialogue up to between a pair and i think it's fair to say scott i don't know what you think we've reached peak house yet you know sort of pretty much i mean for people like that kind of thing and i definitely do this is this is heaven i mean the director he's started sort of movement called slow cinema he thinks he says that cinema should be should be a temple should be like a supermarket. and if you imagine if american cinema was something like mcdonalds maybe tasty and you know what you going to get but not that nutritious this cinema is something else entirely much more enriching but definitely a bit of work for people who aren't used to it and some even members of the audience a few people did not off they did fall asleep a few people did leave early but definitely a very interesting piece of cinema. but you haven't seen most of the competition films by now what do you think what's going to win the golden bear. yeah i think it's interesting i think this year could be the year the 1st time in 20 years that
3:25 pm
america an american director goes home with the golden bear and i picking allies to him and she did this incredible movie never really sometimes always which is a film about a young girl trying to get an abortion without her parents' consent and crossing state lines with her cousin to do so it's very sort of delicate gentle movie but really quietly devastating and i think it's a lot going for it in berlin it's political political theme an amazing movie and it's also got a female director and a lot of bill and i think those 3 points really count as favor when the warts are handed out on saturday you mentioned sort of the committee i thinking outside the box i suppose in their film choices see me i thought that the french movie delete history if a status to the quiz really interesting because he takes on a very serious issue as social media on a day to. but i mean it just deals with it in a hilarious way we see how these 3 people just get into all sorts of trouble because of a use of social media and i think it be interesting to see the jury give a prize to something that doesn't take itself too seriously was taking on a serious issue you know but
3:26 pm
a funny movie winning in berlin that reverse of my opinion we'll see we'll see a great movie we'll see if we see that as a chance our correspondent helena humphrey and scott roxboro at the red carpet for us thank you both so. let's get a reminder now of our top story here on day 8 of you governments around the world are implementing tougher measures to contain a outbreaks of the corona virus the moves come as south korea records more new cases in one day than china where the virus originated from. coming up next on the d.w. news agency nature pan's 1st to disabled lawmakers in parliament but does it herald a change in japanese attitudes towards disabled people. the river island fighting climate change and manmade threats to its survival. there is better she has those stories and more coming right up on your news a shot and don't forget for all the latest headlines you can follow us on twitter or handle their response units or you can head to our website
