greece is blocking its borders to stave off a new wave of refugees. i'm married to evanston welcome to the program the united states and the taliban have signed an agreement aimed at ending nearly 2 decades of conflict in afghanistan both sides of the deal and qataris capital doha following a year and a half of talks each have committed to a reduction in violence the agreement paves the way for the united states to gradually withdraw its troops from afghanistan in return the taliban have promised not to allow the country to be used as a base for terrorist attacks against the west. well u.s. secretary of state my home pale hail to the signing of the agreement in doha he called it the best opportunity for peace in a generation today is

a historic day for the united states of america and the american people. today we have taken a decisive step toward peace real peace in afghanistan. just as any worthy journey begins it is a 1st step and we know exactly who we're dealing with if the taliban do not uphold their commitments president trump and his team will not hesitate to do what we must do to protect american lives. if on the other hand the tell about a bug rather promises the united states will undertake a responsible conditions based troop withdrawal. are at 1st some analysis on all of this i'm joined in the studio by. pedro's men who's been covering afghanistan extensively for many years sent us really great to have you here so we just heard this clip from the u.s. secretary of state my peo i mean he sounded sort of optimistic but also very cautious from your perspective how significant is today's agreement is it
4:03 pm
really going to be a step towards peace i think it is a historic moment it's a moment of hope but we got to be careful because there we were still lies ahead especially ahead of the afghan people because this is essentially an agreement between the united states an extension nato and the taliban it doesn't involve the representatives of the afghan people the elected representatives of the afghan people it doesn't involve for present attempts of the civil society of the people and that is now the next big step that is really something that needs to happen before anyone can call this an afghan peace deal well just looking at the terms of this agreement the united states says it's prepared to begin withdrawing its troops or have guess i mean there's what they 12 or 13000 u.s. troops there at the moment but what sort of guarantees are the taliban offering in
4:04 pm
exchange so at the moment if we look at the roughly $12000.00 u.s. troops plus some nato troops on top of that. reduction would be according to the agreement in the 1st $135.00 days starting from today. down to 8000 and then the taliban of course need to give something and they are saying look we break away from terror afghanistan will not be used as a safe haven by terrorists ever again to launch attacks on anyone plus they've. basically admit to something that they have rejected all along as sitting down with her present to tip off the new afghanistan that was built why they were dealing with there and such and see well this insurgency has been going on for nearly 19 years and that means an entire generation was born and reached adulthood in afghanistan knowing nothing but war millions of children are deeply traumatized
4:05 pm
bonds with today's agreement many do have fresh hope that it could offer a chance to live their lives in peace we now have this report on the impact of the afghan conflict on young people. 13 year old works as a shoeshine or instead of going to school. 11 year old son sells dried fruits on kabul streets. there are just 2 of the afghan children who've been robbed of an education because of war. the u.s. military campaign in afghanistan has now lasted for more than 18 years years without peace for the children who were born and grew up in the country. on the stand paces like a dream to us in afghanistan. if peace comes we'll be able to rebuild our economy 3 mining for example business.
4:06 pm
just full of hope in this. nation. which is full of. water which came from education. people are not. blaming everything on each other. for many afghan children the conflict has meant destruction and poverty and the u.n. says child casualties increased sharply since 2015. that was when the taliban started stepping up its attacks seizing territory across the country the reenergized insurgency coincided with afghan forces taking over combat duties from foreign troops. afghanistan will struggle to overcome its internal divisions despite a peace deal between the u.s. and the taliban. that leaves the children whose lives have been ruined by war to face an adulthood also blighted by conflict. so as we saw in our
4:07 pm
report it really has been civilians and in particular young people in afghanistan who've been bearing the brunt of the conflict over nearly 2 decades sandra where does today's agreement then leave ordinary people in afghanistan how is this going to affect their day to day lives now where the past week saw a reduction of violence that was the condition to have today's sign so it can work we saw that it can work because instead of have been roughly 80 a text per day countrywide we saw less than 10 attacks per day which is huge for the people who suffer the brunt of explosions of suicide attacks all of that of aerial bombardments of drone attacks so nothing like that really happened in the state of like we used to see on a daily basis in afghanistan if this could continue or if this could gain momentum and maybe lead to a nationwide truth and if we then see talks people sitting down and really met
4:08 pm
pinault the future of afghanistan whether it's going to be an islamic any rate which is what the taliban want or whether it's going to stay a republic what i guess the political elite in kabul wants which is that loggerheads with each other that remains to be seen but at the moment i think people really wish for the end of violence at least that. isn't it appears as men always great to hear your thoughts on this thank you so much. let's turn our attention now to our other top story and migrants in turkey have rushed to borders with the european union after ankara signaled it would not stop them from crossing observers say the really of sation of border restrictions is aimed at getting more e.u. and nato support for turkey's campaign against government forces in syria w correspondent johan is on of the turkish greek border and she's been speaking to refugees who traveled there in the hope of crossing into the e.u. . well it's been very tough for people here just imagine they came here
4:09 pm
after they heard the news that turkey would no longer stop refugees from trying to reach europe and then they arrived here and they realize the border is closed so they're basically stranded here and you can see it's many many people in this no man's land between the 2 border as there are many families here with small children it's a bitterly cold people are making far to keep a warm i can hear the children cry they are cold they are hungry some of them are sick most people just took a few belongings basically coming here from other areas in turkey because they really had this hope that they could cross the border they could move on and go to graze i've been talking to one family of from stan
4:10 pm
a son for example and they told me they have been living here in turkey for quite some time but they don't see a future here they're hoping to go 1st to greece and then maybe on to germany but of cause the reality here is so much different from the dreams people have as i said it's very cold that's one of the the biggest problems here and of course the question also is what happens next with these people they don't know we don't know the uncertainty here is huge and many many people a very frustrated and desperate. that was. speaking from the greek turkish border earlier. all right now to the latest developments in the corona virus outbreak as it continues its global advance there are now confirmed cases in $61.00 countries and territories around the world and the total number of people infected has risen to over $85000.00 the virus is spreading

fastest in south korea which has reported more than $800.00 new cases bringing the total there to over $3000.00 and contagion is also widening in europe here in germany people who have come into contact with confirmed cases of a primary school have been asked to stay at home in italy meanwhile entire towns remain sealed off and france has banned a large events over virus fears. earlier we asked dr margaret harris from the world health organization about possible vaccines for the corona virus. normally a vaccine takes years to develop we've certainly we've put together an emergency collaboration of scientists we put this together actually after the great west african outbreak of ebola because we realized being able to accelerate something like a vaccine made an enormous difference in being being able to stop an outbreak and we've got something called the research and development blueprint which allows us to get moving very quickly how if you still have to test any vaccine in healthy

people and you have to test that for some time to ensure there are no serious side effects because o.b. nothing worse than having something that cause more harm you must make sure it's something that does what you want to do which is prevent the virus at the same time remain have the same time not having any serious side effects. all right time for some sports news now and friday's von displayed a soccer action relegation candidates fortuna doesn't dorf were looking to make it 2 wins in a row against visitors has a berlin and the hoes would have fancied their chances the berliners are uncomfortably close to the drop zone themselves and are without a manager since or includes munns shock resignation 2 weeks ago well it all made for a thrilling 90 minutes have allowed. her to famously take their name from a ship and without a firm hand on the managerial tiller the aleut rudderless early on. meanwhile where

a quarter of an hour to go ahead his big money january signing crystal was filled in the box he completed the comeback from the spot an ideal time to back his 1st goal for his new club but a bitter blow for the hosts not least for their 2 goal striker. we could have drugs has a down with us today they've confidence with that and the point doesn't do much for us in the end because i'm in. the harder and drawl for how to keep shut to doff at bay though once the frustration has subsided for those lows men they can take solace in a run of form that has seen them lose just once in 5 games. you're watching news a quick reminder now of our top story. the united states and the taliban have signed an agreement aimed at ending nearly 2 decades of conflict and afghanistan. paves the way for the u.s. to gradually withdraw its troops from the country.
