to gradually withdraw its troops from afghanistan and in return the taliban have promised not to allow the country to be used as a base for terrorist attacks against the west. well u.s. secretary of state my pump aoe hailed the signing of the agreement in doha he called it the best opportunity for peace in a generation today is a historic day for the united states of america and the american people. today we have taken a decisive step toward peace real peace in afghanistan. just as any worthy journey begins it is a 1st step and we know exactly who we're dealing with if the taliban do not uphold their commitments president trump and his team will not hesitate to do what we must do to protect american lives if on the other hand the taliban abide by their promises the united states will undertake a responsible conditions based troop withdrawal and we'll be speaking with our

correspondent in doha a little bit later in the program but for now let's turn to our other top story and migrants in turkey have rushed to borders with the european union after ankara signaled it would not stop them from crossing observers say the relaxation of border restrictions is aimed at getting more e.q. and nato support for turkey's campaign against government forces in syria w correspondent junia han is on the turkish greek warder from where she sent us this report. these people have been waiting to cross a closed border that they've been told was open men and women of all ages families with young children from all over the middle east some have been living in turkey for several years for streets and with their situation there now congregating next to what's essentially a no man's land between greece in the european union and turkey site it.

what would help with the moral of the. news. for you don't have a life here we do have a license i don't think that's what he wanted. at one point it looked possible that people might have been live through the border into greece so hundreds of people surged towards the gates but their hopes of entering the e.u. were short lived it's not stopping some others from taking matters into their own hands 7. turkey has been removing its checkpoints a desire actively encouraging refugees to head for the e.u.'s borders this is being seen as a deliberate tactic to peer pressure on nato to offer more support in dealing with the influx of refugees. citations arrived at the border with greece with an iris of heating that they might be able to get 3 greek police have been firing tear gas to tear them. that's on cuba thought they thought that was going to be

my last breath that's not right but i didn't leave i'm still here and i'm ok. turkey's president rich attire heir to one has called on the e.u. to keep its promises and says his country can't cope with another wave of refugees for now these people are stuck here caught up in the geopolitical game. now to the latest developments in the corona virus outbreak as it continues its global advance there are now confirmed cases in $61.00 countries and territories around the world the total number of infected people has risen to over $85000.00 the virus is spreading fastest and south korea which is reported more than $800.00 new cases bringing the total there to over $3000.00 and contagion is also widening in europe here in germany people who've come into contact with confirmed cases in

a primary school have been asked to stay at home while in italy entire towns remain sealed off and france has banned large events over virus fears well earlier we asked dr margaret harris from the world health organization about possible vaccines for the new coronavirus. normally a vaccine takes years to develop we've certainly we've put together an emergency collaboration of scientists we put this together actually after the great west african outbreak of ebola because we realized being able to accelerate something like a vaccine made an enormous difference in being being able to stop an outbreak and we've got something called the research and development blueprint which allows us to get moving very quickly how if you still have to test any vaccine in healthy people and you have to test that for some time to ensure there are no serious side effects because so be nothing worse than having something that caused more harm you
5:07 pm
must make sure it's something that does what you want to do which is prevent the virus at the same time remain have the same time not having any serious side effects we'd like to take you back now to our top story which is the signing of an agreement between united states and taliban the signing ceremony took place earlier today in doha in qatar and our correspondent. joins us now from there where she's been covering the signing ceremony so. what is the mood in doa after the signing of this agreement are people optimistic that this could be the 1st step towards peace. well 1st of all right here at the sheraton the mood has calmed down a little before there was excitement all over the taliban were very optimistic and very confident it was really interesting to see how they walked around the venue
5:08 pm
walking with broad shoulders and now we have to see what happens next the ball is in the court of afghans and we will see what the in traffic and talks will bring. well will find it interesting to note is that they or very few women who were involved in the signing ceremony in doha today why is that was that demands by the taliban or are there other reasons behind it. i don't believe it was a concrete demand by the taliban and it's also important to note that the americans also did not have any woman in their delegation so there were no women in both delegations there were no afghan female journalists besides me. which was kind of interesting to see it was sad because 50 percent of the country of course are women and those are the ones that have the most to lose inside the country. now was not
5:09 pm
today's agreement was signed in just between the united states and the taliban but of course it's the afghan people who have the most to win or to lose in this in this conflict what do you think people ordinary people in afghanistan make of today's agreement. ordinary afghans. a large number of ordinary afghans are happy about the peace agreement they just want peace they don't really care anymore who's in the government they have lost confidence and trust in the government anyway so what they want is that their sons and daughters are not dying anymore that they can pursue an education and live a normal life. of course we have to see what the afghan government does the taliban spokesman this person so shaheen who told us that as soon as the afghan government
5:10 pm
released this 5000 taliban detainees that's their condition they will start the talks. seem a reporting from we thank you very much. change of pace now and the top prizes of this year's berlin international film festival are set to be awarded tonight the final competition premiere was for there is no evil production from iran the film combines 4 stories that deal with the death penalty and resistance to the regime director mohan. absolutely was not allowed to travel to berlin at the news conference she was represented by and di chair. while helena humphrey and scott roxboro have been busy watching many of the films at the berlin wall and they join as now hello to both of you so just a few hours to go today is all about those bears who will be going home with gold to you guys have

a feeling that you know who the winner will be. yeah well i have to say 1st that almost always wrong with these it's a small group of 7 some person jury is going to pick them up they never have the good taste that i have but i think i think we could have a big sensation tonight because i'm betting that it will be the 1st american winner here in berlin for 20 years there's an amazing film never rarely sometimes always from allies a hit man and i think it has a really good chance to win the bare this is a really quite delicate film about a 17 year old girl trying to get a termination of her pregnancy without her parents' consent and she crosses state lines in order to do it because it's very difficult in our home state of pennsylvania to get a legal abortion and i thought it was a really amazing touching movie and the you know it deals with a very strong political subject it doesn't you know in a really gentle subtle way and. the lead actress flanagan is amazing she's a 1st time performer i think she could even walk away with something tonight but
5:12 pm
you know what i'd agree with you that on that one stunning performance that as well incredible acting i think it could be a great year for america i think that potentially we could also see the golden bear for 1st cow that film from kelly reichardt which is a subtly told west in a different kind of west and we need examining with a sense to portrayal of 2 men's friendship 8 and the wild west is they still milk from the 1st count to make hot cakes which end up selling like hotcakes and at times eights dramatic at times it's comedic i think it's got all the makings of potentially something it could take the gold bed of the jury did say at the beginning of the festival that they were looking for films we've hearts and i think both those films definitely exemplify that. now the berlin nala of course is it's 10 days long there are so many films i know the 2 have you been watching lots of films of move told me who you think are 7 7 possible contenders for the golden bear
5:13 pm
but just for you personally one of them have been some. of the highlights for you at this year's berlin international film film festival. well it was interesting one of the my main highlights was the film we just saw there is no evil the iranian film this is a stupendous i had the opportunity to actually just before the bell and i want to talk to the director who is unable to leave iran and he's also. under a one year prison sentence for the last film he made this movie not only is it a sort of powerful look at how to be a moral person in an immoral world and under a regime like the iranian regime but it's also. a phenomenal tale of filmmaking because he's been banned from making movies in iran but still he managed to make this film in secret and to get it out of the country and to and to be shown and i think that amazing show a sign of bravery really really deserves recognition might win
5:14 pm
a golden bear but it's definitely an amazing film an amazing story and i would just say you know some of those heavy topics i think especially that in august i definitely need to some levity and for me then my favorite movie here was delete history taking a look at the perils of social media in particular when you happen to be some middle aged friends living in the middle of nowhere in front i thought it was hilarious and that was my favorite all right telling the humphrey and scott iraq's 4 hour movie buffs reporting from the berlin all of the berlin international film festival thanks so much you guys and enjoy the rest of your evening with the awards tonight it's really exciting thank you thank you. you're watching the w. news a quick reminder now of our top story. the united states and the taliban have signed an agreement aimed at ending nearly 2 decades of conflict in afghanistan the accord paves the way for the united states to gradually withdraw its troops from the
