after turkey threatens to let them cross into europe our reporter visits them in no man's land. i'm rebecca riches welcome to the program the corona virus has claimed its 1st victim in the united states where a patient in his fifty's died in washington state elsewhere the numbers of infections in south korea continue to rise and australia has recorded its 1st fatality from the disease our report begins in fronts. this hospital in paris is the site of a mini outbreak the corona virus transmitted by a patient who was not initially considered infected. special at 1st there was no reason to isolate the patient because he didn't come from any of the risk areas when we realized he was infected we identified all the staff who had had contact with him. at least 3 hospital employees and now infected with the virus the french

minister of health has called on the public to keep their distance from one another not to shake hands and to refrain from the traditional french kiss on the cheek. but he delivers the number of infections is also increasing in iran officially around $600.00 people there are infected and more than 40 have died but many fear that the number of unreported cases could be much higher understandably iranians are being cautious like at this bizarre. because of our business has dropped to 2 or 3 percent of the usual people are buying from us in. south korea is also in a state of emergency and there's been a sharp rise in cases within one day more than 800 new infections were reported the military is now disinfecting train stations and public places in so-called corona drive ins motorists can be tested using a quick procedure without even getting out of their car they receive the results

via s.m.s. within 2 days. let's go now to pay to hotels he is just an vaccine expert at the battle college of medicine and joins me now from houston texas professor heard has thanks for joining me we've now seen the 1st death from corona virus in the u.s. what measures have been put in place to stop the spread there. well the big worry in the united states is and before we knew the origin of it and that it was in the visual abrupt back from china or an infected area but now for the 1st time we've got 4 cases where we don't know the origin and we suspect we're seeing the beginnings of community transmission in the northwestern part of the country northern california oregon washington state we don't know for sure about this particular death but we think we've been predicting that this virus will gain a foothold in the u.s. and and this is how it it may be starting and other measures being put in place to
6:04 am
try and stop that spread. there certainly are there's been a lot of effort to in the areas that are affected to start doing active surveillance that is for instance in northern california where we've had a few cases where there's been potential contacts to. do expanded testing in those areas so that's going on then isolating in will start we suspect may possibly be infected that that's happening but a big priority right now is to see if we can protect our health care workers one of the concerns that we have and i'm sure it's true in europe as well if you start seeing. widespread infection among health care workers and serious illness then the whole thing starts to break down very quickly so i'm thinking certain that all spittles and clinics are personal protective measures and also are rising our
6:05 am
clinical algorithms because our or our or how we decide who we're going to test because business this is usual was only if they came from the effected area but now that you have transmission there's a lot of complexities to work oh absolutely i mean south korea is another critical point europe has seen a huge increase in cases over the past few days would you say the virus is already out of control. i don't like used the term out of control because it's not that our public health authorities are out of control it's just i think where what where our moving towards is is going from epidemic in multiple areas to eventually we're going to reach the point i think where we'll be able to call this a pandemic the world health organization is not using the term. at this point but but that's where we're heading and we're going to be really mindful about how to manage this and the my concerns are that it's the case fatality rate is pretty high
6:06 am
it's 2 percent and that's about 10 times higher than seasonal flu and 1st we thought well that's only because we're seeing the serious cases not the non serious cases but the world health organization has come out last week and said no they think that 2 percent numbers real and it's also highly transmissible a multi 1000000000 i want to tell we don't have much time left but i thought sorry to interrupt you there but i just want to i know it's a $1000000.00 question but can we expect in fact same for this virus. well we're developing a vaccine and there's about 5 or 6 other candidates and we're all moving quickly into clinical testing i think that will happen in the next few weeks but the problem is this despite what the empty vaccine lobby says that we don't adequately test vaccines for safety the opposite is true no the most thoroughly tested pharmaceuticals we have for safety it's going to take months to show that these vaccines are both safe and effective i doubt very much that will have the vaccine

fired by the greek police. this is one of the major crossing points between taki and e.u. member greece it's been heavily guarded in the past few years but as soon as turkish authorities announced they would no longer stop refugees from trying to cross into europe hundreds of people started arriving here and they easily passed this border fence on the turkish side at the same time greek border police beefed up security and the border of their remains closed so this is the situation now hundreds of people many with children and just a few belongings stuck in the no man's land between the 2 countries. feared us and his family set a little further away 5 years ago he fled from the syrian city of homs to turkey it's here where he met his wife and it's here where their daughter was born now

a shame for the entire planet these people have been left to stay outside in the cold. most of those waiting here came with the firm belief that the border was indeed open and that the tax the europeans opposed had moved in their favor at the realisation that this is not true makes it all the more bitter i don't see as we'll end user for little purposes they should not use refugees like this is inhumane. perhaps abuse or not we know that this is all a game nobody knows what the result we just want someone to tell us what will happen. knowing what's in store this is what everybody here once feared us who even here watches the news from syria. and the many others who now say they want to stay until the border is opened. even though they sense
