threats prison edwin for example earlier today said that millions of migrants and refugees would be heading towards the european union's a border and from my understanding this is intended to ramp up pressure on european governments to act over the situation in syria is it live to share the burden when it comes to the refugees and migrants and knows how afraid european governments burdened paris athens are all of another major refugee influx what gets lost in all of this are the facts and that makes reporting right now very difficult just to give you a brief example. turkish authorities say nearly 120000 migrants have left turkey in the past days while the greek authorities say that's entirely falls they have in
2:06 pm
fact prevented nearly 10000 people from crossing into greek territory now the truth this probably somewhere in between but it's not entirely or not very easy right now to see that truth yulia let's talk about the people who have been caught up in all of this the migrants where are they coming from and what conditions are basing. well their situation is desperate i've been at the border crossing at the turkish border in the past days many families came with small children this chaotic makeshift camp has sprung up they're open to the elements people would make small fires to stay warm they do not have enough to eat and drink at the same time greet border police has been firing tear gas at people who were attempting to cross some migrants have also been throwing stones and other things back so the security situation there is also quite tense now people have also tried as you mentioned in

european commission president. held a major news conference flanked by 5 commissioners who she is calling her crisis response team they sought to purchase say the european union the european commission as being in control of everything that can be brought under control they said that they're going to be channeling everyone's efforts under 3 different pillars mobility economics and medical and of course underlying herself being a medical doctor told everyone don't panic rely on science so it's also important to point out that each member state has its own plan so the commission really really performs mostly a coordinated wall they also updated the figures to me there are now $2100.00 cases across 18 of the 27 member states and there been 38 deaths across the european union terry what is at stake here for the e.u. . a lot is at stake and you could hear that in the answer of economics commissioner

the u.s. and the taliban signed a long ago she added agreement to end the war in afghanistan but it has already run into trouble afghanistan's president says his government has not pledged to release thousands of taliban prisoners even though that was part of the deal. these signatures given at a historic summit in qatar as capital doha are a milestone on afghanistan's road to peace after almost 20 years of war. i but that road was always going to be rocky under the deal the afghan government will release thousands of taliban prisoners ahead of talks between afghan factions but afghanistan's president ashraf ghani said his government never agreed to that and it wasn't for the u.s. to decide. now when that would be better you know commitment has been made for the

release of 5000 prisoners. well but we have repeatedly said this issue clearly with the u.s. envoy south my colleagues that and other officials mommy this is the legitimate right and self-determination of the people of afghanistan. a request has been made and it can be part of the negotiation but it cannot be a precondition yet the might of the my flintstones. for many afghans the hope of an end to the violence is tempered by fears for their country's future. but they don't think that you know if the u.s. leaves afghanistan we afghans are worried about a return to the brutal situation that the taliban will stop their attacks again. so we call on the taliban to sign the peace deal with the afghan government as soon as possible that i'm in talking about. women and girls especially suffered severe repression under taliban rule. kabul veterinarian toher is worried about the threat

to women's progress if the group regain strength through talks with the government . i don't feel very optimistic because i don't know who will come to power if there's peace with the taliban. looking at their history i feel less hopeful that i'll be able to continue my work if there is peace with the taliban the war will come to us and it's now a waiting game to see how talks between different afghan groups play out following saturday's deal. like reside people here hope they won't have to pay for peace with their freedom. you're watching d.w. news still to come on our show in the bundesliga life it was hoping to cut the gap to leaders byron to a point but it did not go as planned. that 1st voting is underway in israel's 3rd election within

a year as the country tries to end a political impasse once again polls show conservative prime minister benjamin netanyahu in a tight race with center left opposition leader benny gantz in the previous 2 elections neither side won enough seats to form a government but with voter fatigue setting in many hope the 3rd time's a charm. he needs all the votes he can get fears of a coronavirus outbreak could put a dent in turnout but as well. prime minister benjamin netanyahu is urging people to head to the polls anyway go vote. it's a proud day this is a democracy you have a great right that you should exercise with confidence. is completely under control today we've taken all the precautions that are necessary people can go and vote with complete confidence thank you it's not just the virus that could make people stay home analysts say voter fatigue has set in this is israel's 3rd election in 11 months and support has splintered among many parties netanyahu has popularity has

waned after corruption charges were brought against him in november his likud party is projected to claim only a quarter of seats in parliament polls put him in a virtual tie with his center left rival benny gantz. one group hoping to make gains is the joint list an alliance of arab israeli parties they've taken heart from recent polls. today of we will make history. we have at least 15 seats and we're getting close to 16 seats with everyone's efforts. yes our votes the boats of the joint list are the ones that will prevent benjamin netanyahu from forming a government and the joint list is the one that will make history. netanyahu may yet come out slightly ahead but with no hope for a clear majority his conservative party is bracing for more coalition talks and
2:19 pm
perhaps more deadlock. and let's speak now to gil hoffman he's the chief political correspondent at the jerusalem post newspaper gil thank you for joining us so what are the chances that this election will finally break israel's political deadlock. it's quite unlikely at this point benjamin netanyahu would have to pull off a very impressive victory he would have to get a majority for his right wing block excluding the people in the bloc that don't want to be the prime minister of it because of his corruption charges there's he's run a very smart campaign i've been following him around i've seen how his grassroots is very motivated but it's would still be extremely difficult it's remarkable that this is israel's 3rd general election in a year i mean what are voters saying are they fatigue that's entire process are they frustrated. you know i thought they were after the 1st election i wrote on the cover of my newspaper the day of the 2nd election lowest turnout ever
2:20 pm
expected and i was wrong and the turnout ended up being relatively high and waited almost 70 percent the turnout went up so while i definitely feel the fatigue of people we could end up having the same 70 percent turnout despite that because people realize that there are very important issues on the line and no matter who wins this election we're going to have a peace process right after the election efforts to solve the israeli palestinian conflict it's very serious what about the fact that the prime minister is about to stand trial on corruption charges i mean how does that affect today's vote. well there are people who would be quite humiliated to have a prime minister on trial and because of that they will be voting for him it's in the out so that will definitely be a factor in how people vote then there are people who consider the the charges against him frivolous or a witch hunt much like the supporters of donald trump were in the united states and
2:21 pm
they will vote for him anyway and what about benny gantz his chances i mean how has what is his message been to voters. his message is has been to voters that way you can have a former general like him keep the citizens of israel safe and secure while also being clean that it's time to after 10 years in a row 14 years in total that being prime minister to give somebody else a chance and that he's assembled the right team to be able to do it to run the country better and and to put the citizens 1st and himself. and i just want to throw this forward what happens if after this election it is inconclusive once again what happens then. the problem all along has been that the politicians have not been lying during the campaign they said i would sit with him i won't sit with her and after the campaign we thought they would break their promises and they didn't know the hope is that they would be such outrage at
2:22 pm
the prospect of a 4th election that they would break those campaign promises that somebody would finally compromise and give it if they don't we are going to a 4th election and maybe a 5th and maybe a 27 to but god forbid hoffman the jerusalem post chief political correspondent thank you for joining us. in bundesliga soccer rb lights a loss to ground in the title chase after one all draw at home to byron leaf a consent light 6 remain 2nd in the table but now 3 points behind leader byron unique white 6 fades believe it's their year to win the title and they were pumped up for this top of the table clash with lever who see. i haven't seen company have the better momentum coming in with a 6 game winning streak plus events you need in europe. for t.-mo vanna in the
