says 3rd time's the charm israelis canst their votes to get for a 3rd time in less than a year will they break the political deadlock between prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his main challenger many gods or will it be another stalemate. why are thank you so much for your company everyone well we begin this newscast with a border battle and a humanitarian crisis along the european union's eastern frontier thousands of desperate migrants are trying to make their way from turkey to greece and that's after the turkish government said it would no longer try to stop migrants from crossing into the e.u. for greece is pushing back to. ploy its military to protect border points they're
5:02 pm
using tear gas to turn the migrants away athens fears a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis and it's suspending asylum applications for one month valuing to return anyone who enters the country illegally well now many migrants who attempted to reach the e.u. are camped out in the turkish border province of a deer and while some are still hoping to cross into greece while others plan to turn back. they shout peace from the turkish side of the border. grieco 30 say they stopped almost 10000 attempted crossings over a 24 hour period. they fired tear gas to disperse the crowds gathering at the border fences the migrants can hit a message from greek border or thirty's across the river.
5:03 pm
it's not a command that's likely to be obeyed. we'll keep waiting here because we left our homes those of us who had homes whatever things to sell got money for them so they could get out if we have to go back we will have to sleep in the streets. what can we do we're stuck here we can't go back home. on sunday some groups tried a hazardous route across the river ever us with some success greece accuses ankara of organizing a campaign to push people through the greek turkish border. this migrant from cameroon waded across the river to reach greece she says she'd been told to leave turkey and along with refugees from syria she was taken by bus from istanbul to the turkish border. and one syrian

woman. many many people this is in the seventy's. no she. didn't do a. but greek police were waiting on the other side. on tuesday european leaders are going to assess the situation for themselves. tomorrow we presented as of the 3 european institutions the parliament the council and the commission that is president it's a solid presidential michelle and me we're going to get there to greece to show the full support of the european union as i said the challenge greece is facing is a european challenge and we have our full support. with migrants stuck in
5:05 pm
a no man's land the pressure is on for politicians to find a way out of the stalemate. all right let's get you the very latest on the this developing story to be a correspondent joins me now from istanbul good to have you with us here some harrowing scenes that we're witnessing today the news agency workers got a hold of footage released by the turkish authorities which they say shows the greek coast guard pushing back a boat filled with migrants i don't know if you can see this but it's a pretty heavy handed way of going about this you'll hear how has it come to this. well yes these pictures are deeply disturbing turkish authorities have shared the pictures with journalists they claim they were failing and of boardroom at the turkish coast which is very close to the greek island of kos earlier this morning
5:06 pm
now. a word of caution here because this footage is coming from the turkish authorities and they clearly have a political interest right now sharing such videos but then again. greek border guards the coast guard they clearly have orders off absolutely not tolerating any illegal crossings they have fired tear gas at people at one border crossing where i've just been in the past days they've used water cannon and i also got some information today that i think is worrying it's coming from local producers in the area from fellow journalists and they said some refugees on a boat have reached out to them and these refugees said that they were intercepted stopped by the greeks coastguard the guards then jumped into their boat took off the engine of the boat and dumped the engine into the water and then they pushed
5:07 pm
this boat back to the turkish coast these refugees they were terrified because they couldn't make it to the coast without. a motor in an engine in their boat so they were trying and get some help in the end somebody called the turkish coast guard and coast guard and they came they help the refugees this is disturbing 6 and you know if concern these illegal pushbacks at border they would be a violation of human rights and of refugee law you have but i do want to get the perspective at this stage in our conversation because they accuse turkey of using these refugees migrants as pones against against them and against the e.u. to exert diplomatic pressure which is also quite questionable.
5:08 pm
yes what we're seeing right now is a war of the turkish authorities and that's hardly surprising are rejecting such criticism one spokesperson of prison edwin said criticizing turkey's refugee policy right now was shameful that's the word he used and then again is just renewing its surprise and add on himself just earlier today warned that soon millions off refugees and migrants would be headed for the border and clearly that's why insecure taishan here and i think that's the general interpretation this is a measure off the turkish government to ramp up pressure on european that governments to you know act over the crisis that in syria is it live and to also share them with turkey when it comes to hosting refugees add on knows exactly what kind of an effect such pictures that we're seeing right now of refugees desperately
5:09 pm
trying to cross into europe what kind of an effect these pictures have on european governments in paris in berlin or in athens and finally the optics are obviously not good but let's not lose sight of course of the people caught in this border battle talk to us a little bit more about them who are the. well i've seen many of families with children out the turkish border has just been there . i've seen people from all kinds of countries mostly afghans people from pakistan from many many people from iran as well some syrians as well and these people are in a desperate condition i mean they have no shelter they sleep outside many of them sleep outside it's very cold there so they make small fires to keep warm they just brought a few belongings they don't have enough food they don't have enough water to drink
5:10 pm
and then just imagine i mean these people came to the border in the firm believe that it would indeed be open that europe or turkey or both would have ruled in their favor and then there realize that's just not true so for many there is a strong sense of frustration and bitterness right now and many refugees also told me they feel like they're being views in a political game. you leon are reporting. for you think you're. and meanwhile travel and border control is also on the spotlight as the number of cases of coronavirus around the world continues to increase rapidly but the show has set the world is in quote uncharted territory although its director maintains that the outbreak can be contained while the total number of infections around the world now is nearly $90000.00 more than $3000.00 patients have died in tunisia and
5:11 pm
several other countries are reporting their 1st cases officials in italy the worst hits country in europe so the number of people infected with the virus jumped by 50 percent to nearly 1700 the number of patients who have recovered from the virus is over 45000 while now across europe far right and nationalist movements have been fast to turn the corner virus outbreak into a chance to push their anti migration rhetoric and call for stricter border regulations do for you reporter for that a budget has been looking into this development fit into how far right parties trying to use this greek to further their agenda well there has been a lot of misinformation circulating especially online surrounding this virus and among that there's also been an effort by nationalists to try and tie this occur in a virus to migration you need to for example which as you mentioned is the highest
5:12 pm
in the country the highest number of cases in europe and the leader of the league party the far right popular opposition party. he has been at the forefront in this discrimination campaign and just recently he posted a video of a ship migrant ship rescue ship docking in sicily along with the message that it is simply insane that the landings the. as if nothing had happened meaning is they occur in a virus hadn't happened and he's criticizing the government for acting surprised that the at the outreach of the virus need to lean plying well of course if you let so many migrants in of course there are so many cases which of course not the case . greece the nationalist government has cited the risk of current virus as a reason to go ahead with a controversial plan to create a closed migrant camps and just recently and you mentioned that earlier they have
5:13 pm
said they're going to suspend asylum applications for months now and that's also citing current virus risks but now let me stress that there is no proven link between migration and the current virus especially for i mean if you look at the numbers europe for example has a lot more cases than than africa and i understand correctly in some far right parties across europe have actually been calling for the sharing in borders to be suspended or closed at least a freedom of movement to be suspended temporarily that's right that's for example what friend says the plan of the national front party has suggested suspending the freedom of movement of people within. particularly to close the border between it's early and france that idea was also echoed by other far right parties across europe as such as and here in germany the alternative for germany party and this is vital
5:14 pm
who's the head of the a d. in the german parliament saying it would be more than negligent if necessary measures to contain the virus were not taken or were taken too late due to what she calls a one sided fixation on the dogma of the open borders of course because of the needs to contain the virus national governments are holding necessary conversations about whether and how to control the movement of people within even within. their own borders but what we're seeing here is clearly an attempt by far right parties to tap into the current panic and fear surrounding this virus and again point the finger at migrants and they're trying to push push for what they've always wanted so close borders less immigration and more division within europe. thank you for. and here in germany the number of course in a virus cases has nearly doubled health officials say there are now 129 confirmed
5:15 pm
infections compared to 66 on saturday there's a closer look now at how germans are dealing with the threat of covert 19. germany and the corona virus in a big city like berlin the infectious agent might be lurking anywhere invisible to the naked eye but potentially deadly. so far there's no sign of widespread panic here although it's a new one up with you can't protect yourself from it completely but if you follow a few basic rules then hopefully it'll pass you by but still it's worrying but ultimately sheffield's will i just try to follow hygiene rules and wash my hands i also try to teach this to my pupils that's it really. close to hate time worried about it sure i read the newspaper some listen to the radio you do have to stay on the alert. it's think it's good i think it's really being played up ok it is
5:16 pm
dangerous a few people are getting sick. but they've had only mild cases. with the monks planck institute for human development in berlin risk researcher again has some clear advice. and sponsors are here to relax and try to avoid dying the things you probably will die of. the stuff is that would be things such as the ordinary case of flu smoking or people you see on the street in their car who insist on using their smartphone while driving. the goats. but it's not always behaves rationally especially when it comes to shopping. a few people have started panic buying staples such as canned goods and pasta and especially cleansers and disinfectants. so the shelves might be picked clean. unusual for germany. because under
5:17 pm
especially in our supermarkets in the section for hygiene articles where the soap and disinfectants are we've had shortages some items have sold out and it is also called here. the constant reports on the radio t.v. and other media play a part where suspected cases and deaths are tallied up for the 3. it creates the impression that it's the biggest problem we have it's not. it's just gross to quickly get us where you know is this is not just. although the extent of the coronavirus epidemic is hard to assess for now panic won't help. aren't bring up to speed now with some of the other stories making news around the world. japan says it's working closely with the u.s. and south korea after north korea fired 2 short range missiles into its eastern sea well the launches were the 1st since november and traveled

elections neither side won enough seats to form a government but with voter fatigue sitting in any hope the 3rd time's the charm. he needs all the votes he can get fears of a coronavirus outbreak could put a dent in turnout but israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is urging people to head to the polls anyway go vote. it's a proud day this is a democracy you have a great right that you should exercise with call for the. the corona thing is completely under control today we've taken all the precautions that are necessary people can go and vote with complete confidence thank you it's not just the virus that could make people stay home analysts say voter fatigue has set in this is israel's 3rd election in 11 months and support is splintered among many parties netanyahu has popularity has waned after corruption charges were brought against him in november his likud party is projected to claim only

a quarter of seats in parliament polls put him in a virtual tie with his center left rival benny gantz. it's about time that we be much more united much more was one another unless the ones against the other one group hoping to make gains is the joint list an alliance of arab israeli parties they've taken heart from recent polls. young today of we will make history. we have at least 15 seats and we're getting close to 16 seats with everyone's efforts. yes our votes the boats of the joint list are the ones that will prevent benyamin netanyahu from forming a government and the joint list is the one that will make history. netanyahu may yet come out slightly ahead but with no hope for a clear majority his conservative party is bracing for more coalition talks and perhaps more deadlock the concious will tell us around 3 for israel's elections
5:21 pm
let's get you the latest tiny at cramer did a correspondent is standing by in jerusalem tiny a wonderful to see what are the chances that this election right now will break israel's a political deadlock. well i think it's going to be a very interesting election evening because up until election day today all the polls have shown a neck and neck race in the last states a slight advantage for benyamin netanyahu but also a neck and neck race between the 2 blocs because he is or you look mainly of the religious right wing blog that by the likud party in benjamin netanyahu and the. center left bloc led by many guns and this blue and white alliance this is what we will be looking at both have been painting in the past weeks and months but it has been a very fatigued come pain but i have to say voter turn out got some think is during
5:22 pm
the day slightly higher than september so i think israelis really want to see an end to this deadlock there's a lot of patience you know to see that there will be a new coalition government being formed after this election and tell your prime minister and netanyahu is about to stand trial on corruption charges how much of a role does that play in the voters' minds. well i think you have to come see i mean there are those who say this is impossible for a prime minister to sit in the court to stand trial and at the same time to be a prime minister and those are many people i think who would go and vote you know for the opposition for blue and white there are also some people within the liquid party but they're not such a strong voice yet but of course they have a lot of supporters that are. for prime minister netanyahu the acting prime
