our documentary slavery routes starts march 9th on d w. this is d w news live from berlin the head of the e.u. says europe is united as the continent faces a new chapter of its migration crisis as refugees gather at turkey's border to greece e.u. chief was about $1.00 and says europe will help greece safeguard its borders and warns turkey not to test european unity that's a spouses of migrants are stranded as they try to enter europe. also coming up on
3:01 pm
the show at super tuesday in the u.s. presidential campaign and a key test for democratic front runner bernie sanders we take a look at another one of the candidates in the running michael bloomberg. south korea's president declares a war on the coronavirus his country as the 2nd highest number of infections after china and seoul just reported a record surge in new cases. i'm sorry the summer is going to thank you for joining us a sign of solidarity with greece european union leaders have been holding emergency talks there with the aim of finding a solution to the migration crisis on its border with turkey the talks were called by greek prime minister meets with takis who is accused turkey of encouraging migrants to head for the greek border said over the weekend it would no longer stop migrants in its territory from trying to enter the e.u.
3:02 pm
the head of the european commission it was a left on the line says it is up to europe as a whole to protect greece's border. those who seek to test europe's unity will be disappointed we will hold the line and our unity will prevail now is the time for concerted action and cool halves and acting based on our values turkey is not an enemy and people are not just means to reach a goal we would all do well to remember both in the days to come i think greece for being our european speeder in these times. and by f.p. to you commission president there was thanking greece for being europe's shield ok let's talk about all of this with our correspondent yulia she's on the turkish side of the border crossing to greece and we have our political correspondent kate brady
3:03 pm
with us here in our studio yulia i want to start with you because i was the last on the line we heard her say there that turkey is not the enemy but she also said that those who seek to test our unity will be disappointed i do think that will come across in turkey. well that remains to be seen i so far have not heard any official political reaction to tucky has created facts on the ground here and as you can see i'm in a small takesh a village along the banks all of the river everest that's the river that runs along the tukey greece border and you can see there are still people here behind me many of them families with small children they've set up a makeshift camp they tell me they have very tired because many of them have been here for the past 3 or 4 days they say they don't have enough food and water even
3:04 pm
though there is local aid they have no access to proper sanitation or toilets for for them it's been very tough on the people here although there are not too many here today say they're determined to stay and wait for the greeks to open the border now it's very difficult here at the border to understand how many people actually have gathered here who are still here how many have maybe returned to the cities in turkey where they came from but the tuckers shot president just yesterday or the day before threatened that millions of people will soon be headed towards the european union's board at this is his threat and we've seen thousands gather at the border with greek in the past days and that was him proving that he follows through that his threats are to be taken serious. all right these images kate the reality facing europe as they try to confront the situation and was about fonda
3:05 pm
line you know trying to show solidarity with greece there what did you take away from what she said in terms of what europe's reaction is going to be here well and europe's reaction as a whole is going to be very interested in complications when already in monetary terms at least we've seen money put on the table from fund a line this afternoon saying that 7000000 viewers will be put on the table for greece in terms of financial assistance but when it comes to this unity the underlying was talking about that's where it becomes extremely complicated and extremely difficult because it's been 4 years now since turkey in the e.u. agreed on this deal and in the meantime the e.u. the e.u. member states have not been able to really reach an agreement when it comes to how as the european union bloc how they want to deal with migration and instead they have pushed the situation right to the wire again and now we are still for having office ition from countries like poland hungary italy austria for example and even
3:06 pm
since 2060 we now have more right wing governments in power in various member states as well so it's going to be very very difficult to actually push through with this unity from the lion is offering greece right now while the greek prime minister also commenting today on the crisis that his country's border with turkey let's listen to what he had to say. greece expects terrible sort of thing from the europeans. and i can tell you the presence of the entire european leadership europe the old the borders of the union sums a clear signal to everyone. but let's be honest europe has not been. dealing with my group of course which i hope this crisis will serve as a wake up call for everyone to assume. those are pretty stark words are saying europe has not been up to the task and he hopes this is
3:07 pm
a wake up call i mean it does really seem to highlight europe's inability to find a coherent solution to this i mean why has that been such an issue but this largely has been that opposition which i mentioned a few months ago from some member states within the european union but the the e.u. really has failed to bring through what it played straight and particularly when it comes to your helping to process incoming migrants incoming asylum seekers particularly to greece and a full 5 years ago they were promising that they would be able to help speed up that process instead west of the situation that we're seeing on the greek island of lesbos for example where people are facing months or years now waiting to be processed and there is a very difficult as well to negotiate within the e.u. as well how migrants asylum seekers refugees come be fairly distributed among different european union member states as well and that's what countries like poland and hungary and austria and italy as well have really made the situation
3:08 pm
more difficult and have put their foot down and made it harder to fairly distribute refugees and asylum seekers across the european union so of course the situation that we're facing right now on the borders of scene there with you is extremely distressing to see but at the same time that is not going to suddenly change the positions of some of these opposing in countries i've been night yet really see of the results of that discord right now. coming back to you there on the border you're saying that there are still so many migrants their families we see camped out there behind you and they say they do definitely want to cross over into europe but they've been facing a lot of force from the greek border guards for example have had acted as a deterrent to do people say that they now want to return back to turkey. well we heard people are saying that they have already returned or are returning and indeed greek border guards have used draconian measures to keep people out as
3:09 pm
a water cannon we also heard from one young man from a fan a son today that his friends have tried to cross why is this river to greece greece is on the other side where you can see the trees and they were detained by the greek police they took their belongings their money their phones and then they just send them back to turkey that's what this young man told us so even though they make it to the other side it doesn't mean they can stay there and this is a political discussion that with seeing here and as kate just said it's very distressing to see what it does to the people because you have to know many many people here they came with this from believe a few belongings by the fumble leave that this board a 2 year old what indeed be open now they have been staying here for a couple of days and they see that's just just not true they have been sent here they are here but nothing is happening they can fulfill their dream to go to europe and it leaves many people here with frustration and bitterness all right we have
3:10 pm
our correspondents covering of this developing story for us. there on the turkish border with greece and our political correspondent kate brady with us here in studio thank you both so much. well let's take a closer look now at the situation situation on the border and the frustration that many refugees are facing as we heard thousands of migrants have made their way to the turkish town of air d.n.a. but as this next report shows that they've been let they've landed in limbo and they're unable to cross into greece and they're out of options. migrants make their way through fields heading towards the greek border searching for a way to cross to the other side earlier turkish security forces at the official border crossing stopped letting people through those migrants forced to turn back are angry. about a lot is you know we were shown on t.v. how turkey was being its borders and told we could go to the e.u. we were expecting compassion but we got the opposite the greeks treated us like
3:11 pm
animals. the greek military has repeatedly used tear gas to disperse crowds of migrants some responded by throwing stones at the border guards the tension is escalating the turkish president to one says turkey is sticking by its decision. should be a couple or since we opened our gates we've been getting one call after another they're saying close your borders we say no we've made our decision. many families are now camping out along the every us river on the border several afghans tell us the groups of migrants were driven here for free in buses provided by turkish police in istanbul many used rubber boats to make it across to the greek side they said greek soldiers took their money and their mobile phones and brought them back to turkey. also i've no idea what the place to doing or what's happening between turkey in europe we don't deserve to be treated like this with people. here
3:12 pm
on the turkish side of the border anger and frustration is growing one migrant says everyone is aiming a weapon towards europe and using the people here as ammunition. to the u.s. now and democratic presidential candidate joe biden has gotten a big boost ahead of super tuesday former candidates better work amy close but charge people to judge have all endorsed by and ahead of today's key slate of primaries democrats and republicans nominate their presidential candidates their primaries and caucuses there's little doubt that donald trump will win the republican nomination but the former vice president is one of 5 candidates still in the running for the democratic nomination so what's so unique about super tuesday well it's the most important of all primaries because people in 14 states will be voting under this system with the more votes a candidate gets the more delegates they're awarded and the states with the most democratic delegates that are for grabs are california with 415 and texas or with
3:13 pm
228 so by the end of super tuesday it should become clear who the democratic presidential nominee might be or perhaps no other candidate has been banking on super tuesday success more than michael bloomberg the billionaire former new york city mayor is hoping an impressive delegate haul in today's primaries can catapult him into contention for the nomination bloomberg has already spent more than half a $1000000000.00 of his own fortune on his campaign but will the gamble pay off. mike bloomberg a woman whose maria rallies soon houston texas here the form a new york mayor is presenting himself as the only candidate who can stop donald trump so if you want someone who talks turkey and who has a record of accomplishments on all the big issues facing our country and country and if you want somebody has the resources to be trump that's made. up of mike bloomberg resources in other words his will is
3:14 pm
a controversial topic among voters some say his money makes him independent others say the billionaire wants to buy the election. we're essentially in the middle of the political science experiment we don't know how this is. going to turn out no one has ever thrown this much money out of primary before i don't see that he's trying to buy the election he's using his resources to make a difference for america i say that. he can't be bought is really what that means a nation divided by an age of control president mike bloomberg is running on president did lee expensive campaign he has spent $300000000.00 on t.v. ads he doesn't accept donations relying instead on his own fortune brings people together that means he's expand president trump in 2016 but dropped about $66000000.00 of his personal money on his campaign and his democratic rivals mike bloomberg spent already twice as much as bernie sanders and joe biden combined.
3:15 pm
thanks to his money mike bloomberg seems to be everywhere he has bought 1500000 facebook ads and even paid ordinary people to post messages supporting him on their profiles the mayor bloomers not going to charm you and he's not going to make you fall in love with this policy ideas but his ads are thing to behold wonderfully produced the best visuals the best audio he's good at making commercials can he persuade voters that commercials are enough. i don't think so. super tuesday mike bloomberg is on the ballot for the 1st time goose primary season some polls put him among the top 3 candidates for now it seems like to speak spending has paid off. let's catch up now on some other stories making news around the world of ok no on the indonesian island of java has erupted mt merapi

3:19 pm
a matter of whether or not to queue there are no toilet rolls i checked 2 stores today but they didn't have any. despite the public's concern the world health organization remains optimistic that early and aggressive measures can stop transmission and save lives. the number of new infections has also been increasing in germany the country already has the 3rd largest number of cases in europe after italy and france there are now 188 can. cases nationwide 13 of germany 16 states have been hit by the virus so far and the city of light saying has now announced that it's canceled its annual book fair because of the corona virus the 40 fare was scheduled to open on march 12th here in berlin 3 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed and 2 schools have been shut down here's how residents have been reacting . germany and the corona virus in a big city like berlin the infectious agent might be lurking anywhere invisible to
3:20 pm
the naked eye but potentially deadly. so far there's no sign of widespread panic here all that's anywhere upwards of you can't protect yourself from it completely but if you follow a few basic rules then hopefully it'll pass you by but still it's worrying but. i just try to follow hygiene rules and wash my hands i also try to teach this to my pupils that's it really. has to hafe time worried about it sure i read the newspapers and listen to the radio you do have to stay on the alert. i think it's really being played up ok it is dangerous a few people are getting sick. but they've had only mild cases maybe. the max planck institute for human development in berlin risk researcher again has some clear advice. and sponsors relax and try
3:21 pm
to avoid dying the things you probably will die of. this if thing went into pushing the stuff to us is that would be a thing such as the ordinary case of flu smoking or people you see on the street in their car who insist on using their smartphone while driving. but who always behaves rationally especially when it comes to shopping. a few people have started panic buying staples such as canned goods and pasta and especially cleansers and disinfectants. so the shelves might be picked clean. unusual for germany. because on the especially in our supermarkets in the section for hygiene articles where the soap and disinfectants are we've had shortages some items have sold out and it is also called here 3 of the constant reports on the radio t.v.
3:22 pm
and other media play a part where suspected cases and deaths are tallied up for the 3. it creates the impression that it's the biggest problem we have it's not. just the scripts to quickly get it you know someone problem is this is missed. although the extent of the corona virus epidemic is hard to assess for now panic won't help. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu appears to be holding on to a solid lead over his main rival with most of the votes counted after monday's parliamentary election but it also appears that his likud party and its allies are likely to fall short of a parliamentary majority to form a government and official results are expected later today. so. this is the night of the giant victory. netanyahu is victorious and so exit polls were announced it wasn't clear whether his alliance of parties would get the most votes
3:23 pm
his opponent benny gantz leader of the centrist alliance did not concede defeat but he didn't sound that upbeat we saw the lowest campaign in the history of israel where many lies and slanders were spread against us and me personally they thought i would get frightened they thought i would blink and i'm telling you i did not and i will not. and that's in your who supports is were pleasantly surprised. it's a story like. that but it is that. it's likely netanyahu will be given a chance to form a coalition for an historic 5th term but it's unclear exactly how he'll break the deadlock this election was called after he tried and failed to get enough support last time around netanyahu campaigned in the shadow of a looming corruption trial which is due to start in 2 weeks his victory to cement
