this is news coming to you live from in the u.s. millions vote in democratic presidential primary in a super tuesday showdown former vice president joe biden surges back to put in a strong showing across the map while senator bernie sanders said to back the biggest electoral prize california. also coming up a show of support for greece has the e.u. faces yet another migration crisis. who seek to test europe's future will be disappointed we will hold the line and our.

european commission president or slope underlying problems is to help deal with the surge of refugees trying to cross the border from turkey. plus coping with confinement we need to hong kong probably that's been told. in the wake of the coronavirus power they and others like them getting on in isolation. following terry martin good to have you with us projections from the democratic super tuesday primaries in the united states show former vice president joe biden taking the lead against his rivals biden has clinched victories in 8 states so far with an especially strong showing in the south exit polls link his success to strong support from africa. older and suburban voters meanwhile senator bernie
8:02 am
sanders has won 3 states and is on track to win the biggest prize california sanders is particularly popular with younger and latino voters just a short while ago joe biden addressed his supporters this is what he had to say. just a few days ago the press the pundits who declared campaign. i don't care in south carolina days i'm sorry if i was. your trial well when you got to super tuesday and you're over well maybe your average ever guy was. well reported william good cruft is with me here in the studio this morning and joining us from los angeles is our correspondent i think on the nominee sandra looks like super tuesday has catapulted joe biden well into the lead.
8:03 am
seem to have an audio problem there to los angeles with maybe to get the line up a little later let's bring in william glue cruft here he's been covering this for several hours watching as the results come in from super tuesday william it's a decisive day for democrats in choosing who they want to challenge donald trump what's your take i think the big way is that it helps to have competition after joe biden had a strong showing as many people thought he would in south carolina his main moderate competitors to judge amy club which are they decided to drop out and put their support behind joe biden that drove a lot of votes that might have split among several moderate cabot's to him and now we've seen him very much up in the delegate count ahead of bernie sanders now who was the clear front runner now we have 2 front runners really quite neck and neck
8:04 am
that's really the big takeaway from this that and in the inverse we have bernie sanders now facing elizabeth warren taking votes away from him just which was joe biden's problem just a few days ago so the field is definitely narrowing is this going to make it easier for democratic voters to try to come up with a choice in this rather crowded field till now well it's interesting it's interesting that there is a choice for for the traditional wisdom of primaries is that democrats have to go further to their left to win upright to win the nomination and republicans have to go further to their right and candidates will often appear to be further left or further right than they really are and then come back to the middle to try to win the presidency in this case we actually have a true tried and true left candidate and a tried and true moderate candidate and democrats have a choice to make which kind of candidate do they want and which kind of candidate do they think is going to be the one to beat donald trump ok well bernie sanders is definitely still in the game even though joe biden seems to have edged him out
8:05 am
largely in this primary let's take a listen to what he had to tell his supporters earlier. no you were the absolute confidence we're going to win that democratic nominee should be obvious. to defeat the most dangerous president in their history there's cock robin we're going to win the but bernie sanders they're still sounding very confident course he has a good right to seems to have done very well in california willing we do have to clear front runners now for the democratic nomination in bernie sanders and joe biden joe biden looking
8:06 am
a bit stronger michael bloomberg and elizabeth warren not doing very well what super tuesday do you think they're going to drop out of the race and well michael bloomberg already said he's going to quote reassess his campaign in the coming days quite maybe we'll have an announcement quite soon that is usually code for a dropping out or suspending his campaign which leaves the question of what this $500000000.00 strategy was all about putting all those hopes on super tuesday if then ultimately nothing really came of it elizabeth warren is the bigger question mark because as i mentioned she's now drawing votes away from bernie sanders she has a lot of money to stay in the game but doesn't have a lot of the delegates doesn't have a lot of the support or the everyone's favorite magic board momentum will she drop out or will she try to push forward to the many more states and delegates to win yet to come in hopes of pushing for a contested convention where they really have to vote at the convention who the nominee is going to be rather than it being
8:07 am
a foregone conclusion going into the convention ok we are still in the primary states are still a lot a lot of states to go on has to be said that not all the delegates are being to. and here on super tuesday even though it gives us maybe an indication the big question for the democrats is who is going to be in a stronger position to beat donald trump if it comes down to a 2 head race for the nomination of the democrats between bernie sanders and joe biden are there any one of the polls saying in terms of who might be better against trouble i find this so fascinating i theel like reliving the 2016 election where we had a centrist candidate hillary clinton and establishment candidate a clinton and person to the left a person who wasn't even really isn't even really a democrat bernie sanders let's not forget is an independent running as a democrat definitely establishment democrats didn't like him very much wanted to see hillary clinton be that candidate thought she was the one to beat dollars from bernie sanders still calling himself a democratic socialism exactly democratic socialists in the u.s.
8:08 am
in a very different way than a very different era exactly a very different way something that younger voters are actually very much a very much appeal they appeal to that they don't have the same association with socialism that older generations in america america do now are seeing again an establishment democratic moderate former vice president with the blessing of barack obama of wildly popular president trying to make the case i'm the guy to beat dallas trump and bernie sanders saying hey i was you try this already here i am again let me have a shot and that's we're really seeing this battle at the democratic party of which way do we go to try to take down this president because democratic voters across the spectrum are saying our number one priority is to make sure donald trump is a one term president well we'll be watching still a lot of suspense in this primary no absolutely the democrats william thank you very much william good crop there reporter thanks a lot. some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. tornadoes that tore through the southern u.s. state of tennessee disrupted super tuesday voting in parts of the state at least 24

of a woman and a girl as spurred recent action against gender based. now here in europe a sign of solidarity with greece says the e.u. grapples with a new chapter of the migration crisis european union leaders have been holding emergency talks in the greek town of cost and yes on the country's border with turkey greece accuses turkey of encouraging migrants to cross its borders illegally and also into neighboring all garia which is also an e.u. state just days ago ankara said it would no longer prevent migrants from trying to leave its territory and that's sparking fears of a new wave of migration into the european union. people are still stuck on the turkish side of the border searching for any possible way to get to greece and further into europe. you know look but just over there
8:11 am
the greek soldiers are watching us with a but they're not allowing us to enter it's just 15 to 20 meters away. but they won't let us in so much because i'm a little bit because we can wait here for 4 or 5 months we are determined to wait we will not leave we won't give up and when they finally open the gates we will and if they don't we will wait here have been is i don't know if this is turkey's game or europe but they're playing with us they put us in a miserable situation e.u. leaders came to see the situation for themselves after greece asked for help to secure its land and sea entry points. europe has not been up to the task of dealing with my question questions i hope this crisis will serve as a wake up call for everyone to assume the worst possible. the e.u. leaders announced 700000000 euros in assistance support from its border protection

agency and patrol vessels now is the time for concerted action and cool hads and acting based on our values turkey is not an enemy and people not just means to reach a goal. we would all do well to remember both in the days to come greek authorities say they've prevented tens of thousands of people from crossing the border trucks have arrived with supplies blankets and pillows for me shift shelters those looking for 2 year up are preparing for more days if not weeks or months camping out in no man's land. d.w. correspondent dorian jones is covering the story and joins us now from. dorian is turkey actively encouraging migrants to cross illegally into the e.u. as greece claims and if so what's it trying to achieve with this. well on kryptonite it is actually

a facilitator refugees to enter the european union for the same time it says there is no law in the world that the mines that they stop them from entering another country and they say from now on they will keep their borders open and it's up to the european union countries to accept these people if they are seeking asylum under international law why on korea's doing this he said this basically they saying it takes a crisis to get the european union to address the the refugee crisis in this region and chris had ever since his signed an agreement in 2016 with the european union over migration europe has shown little interest in a coup addressing turkey's concerns and it says this is all about getting the european union attention and why now it's not so much the $4000000.00 or so refugees in turkey it's a fear of a more refugees still to come they fear that another exodus of between $1.20 syrians from the province could be emptying towards turkey if that crisis is not addressed this move by turkey to create
8:14 am
a crisis on the european union border is about getting brussels attention ok well it seems ankara has gotten brussels attention meetings are being held at cetera is turkey satisfied with the response so far. well i mean president been talking about so there is a need for a complete overhaul of the my dealing with the migration issue all across europe he's talking about a fair of egypt of the burden but for sure or is please with the attention of the german chancellor merkel is reportedly spoke with president one last night and no one is saying that the european leaders are queuing up to speak to him now after months in years of showing little interest so i'm very pleased about that attention and particular they are focusing on building up international support for the creation of safe zones in this province in syria chancellor merkel of reportedly has voice can support for that move and that is. certainly welcome to build an
8:15 am
international coalition of support for this new strategy what has become of those plans for a so-called safe zone inside of syria because turkey sent its troops into syria without express. signs that that is actually taking for now. well they have floated this idea before last year when they controversially intervened in northeast syria against a kurdish militia which considers a terrorist but also an ally of the west in the war against the islamic state and there does appear little support internationally for the creation of a safe zone there because of fears that basically kurds will be pushed out and replaced by. province which is predominantly arab there is a belief a noncredit they can build support will be looking for building that support ahead of his meeting tomorrow with the russian president but i think putin way he will be facing down putin and his demands to create that safe zone which moscow is not very

enthusiastic about. dorian thank you so much that was. talking to us from. now the world is in the grip of the corona virus and today we're taking a look at some of the tough tactics that governments are using to slow the spread of the pathogen that's killed more than 3000 people worldwide france says it's seizing stalks of facemask says cases of the infections sore president amount will not call it says authorities will redistribute the musts to health professionals and those already infected with the credit world health organization has warned that protective gear supplies used in fighting the corona virus is running out globally italy's death toll has jumped by almost 50 percent to $79.00 and argentina and chile are the latest countries to report their 1st case of the virus meanwhile in hong kong the coronavirus is for people to either self quarantine or work from home on instructions of their employers we look at one family dealing with the

combine mint at home so we have some live talk about full basket lies dark hours ready for a possible walk down water you know very central to our family have been spending a lot of time indoors as the city battles to contain the coronavirus parents have a battle with boredom on their hands oh my. read out for. a week or 2 per week. with schools close to the children digging into studies a line and with derek's company telling stuff to work from harm the kitchen table has become a co-working space. hong kong is still free to go outside though the virus is a rival brought an abrupt end to large gatherings like the months of political protests that gripped this city in recent months. this if i was a try i thought it came at

a good time you know where where you know where where we were 45 or you know a couple months ago i hope that you know there's. hope it will bring us together. but some say the quarantine conditions have strained divided families in the past before they can steal a state as day old and then to avoid the like the corals with the family members but these days they have to stay at home and without any choice is the they have to like days like this situation or somehow it will also create more tension within the family. the broader social impact of these measures it may take longer to emerge but for now the al family is coping fine with the confinement. joining us this morning to talk about the corona virus and it spread is our science correspondent derrick williams good morning daryn. the virus has now killed over 3000 people there are dozens of deaths here in europe already is there any prospect
8:19 am
of stopping this well i think it's interesting to see in the discourse how the experts have moved away from this idea of containment although not officially the w.h.o. is still the goal is containment officially but they've moved away from that idea and are moving towards the idea of mitigation now the only country that's managed to in some ways contain it so far to some extent has been china and you see this question of mitigation is the question is are there going to be a 2nd wave of infections there. after they get this 1st one under control here in germany they're talking about longer term questions of how are we going to deal with large numbers of people possibly in hospitals how are we going to deal with the with the medical supplies. one way or the other what's very very clear is that a key aspect of fighting the corner virus all along has been testing so we decided to take a look at how it works. determining whether or not someone has the corona virus
8:20 am
isn't as simple and straightforward as it sounds the process generally begins when a patient complains of symptoms like fever or a dry cough the challenge is distinguishing a coded 19 infection from the flu or other respiratory conditions because the symptoms are so similar testing begins with the swab sample usually taken from the mouth or nose although experts believe mucous coughed up directly from the lungs is a better indicator and many of the various tests use a method known as the polymerase chain reaction or p.c.r. and it works like this if a sample contains the corona virus the chemicals in a test kit begin to react with its unique genetic material and start copying it over and over again the copies are tagged with the dye so even when low loads of virus are in a sample they grow more and more detectable with each new generation of copies.
8:21 am
one such test for the corona virus was developed in berlin back in january by dr coast down to austin and his team who can take several hours to get a positive for a negative result. so we'll look at all recipe orders some specific ingredients that they will receive after like 2 days at the same time order this small or cool for us that they will also receive within very short time. and then they can start testing in the last few weeks the w.h.o. has sent some 250000 have to austin's p.c.r. kids to labs across the planet the means to detect the virus quickly will play a vital role in combating it effectively but in parts of the world like africa the technology is still far from common. so testing is obviously very important how big is the gap between the demand for corona virus testing and the availability of kits and expertise for that well i think that that depends
8:22 am
obviously very much i'm on where you are china at the moment says that they're producing and carrying out over a 1000000 tests we. south korea they've tested well over 100000 people they've set up these mobile testing centers on streets where they're just taking people basically out of the cars and testing them straight away italy they're all another hot spots they've already tested in excess of 20000 people but you can compare that to places like iran where where they're they're really far behind the curve on this and sub-saharan africa and interestingly also and the u.s. there are only going to few 100 tests performed today or i think that by the end of it and people are dying in the u.s. as well a number of deaths are already out from washington state understand there's something of a scandal that merge there tell us more about you know it's really the centers for disease control appears to have really dropped the ball on this that has to some extent to do with what the structure the way that they that this whole testing for
8:23 am
. is launched and gets going in the u.s. generally the c.d.c. is the one that gets the testing up and running and then they handed they're supposed to handed over to them to the commercial producers of the test now the c.d.c. itself produced its 1st tests and one of the regions and the test didn't more and so they've sort of stopped and they're supposed to be at the what they call phase 3 which is commercial production of test at this point and they haven't reached that it's really got a lot of people scratching their heads what about people who may have the virus but aren't showing any symptoms and could be walking around spreading it i mean is there anything that can be done to mitigate that risk when what you're talking about here is what's called a logical testing and there's a comparison between 0 logical testing and and molech and molecular testing were to whether you're testing for the active virus do you actually have it or have you had it then in the past and and so singapore has come up with the test an antibody test
8:24 am
last week that will be able to show that they came up with it to kind of tie a tie a connection between 2 different clusters that was unexplainable for them and so this the sewer logical testing testing whether or not people have had it in the past is going to be very important moving forward into the future because that's going to tell us as big shadowy number of how many people really have gotten it and maybe been asymptomatic so that has then a knock on effect by telling us what the fatality rates look like a very important to track the virus going in and good to know to the it is not as fatal as as some other viruses have been in the williams resized just thank you so much. international olympic committee president thomas baa remains confident that the tokyo games will be 6 a success despite concerns that the coronavirus could disrupt the event which is scheduled for july japan's olympics minister says the country could postpone the
