this is news coming to you live from berlin in the u.s. millions vote in democratic presidential primary and a super tuesday showdown former vice president joe biden surges back to put a strong showing across the map while senator bernie sanders looks set to back the biggest electoral prize california. also coming up a show of support for greece as the e.u. faces the prospect of another migration crisis the e.u. commission promises a 700000000 euro package to help athens deal with

a new surge of refugees trying to cross the border from turkey. plus coping with confinement tweet me to hong kong family that's been told to self quarantine in the wake of the coronavirus how are they and others like getting along in isolation. hello i'm terry martin good to have you with us projections from the democratic super tuesday primaries in the u.s. show former vice president joe biden taking the lead against his rivals biden has clinched victories in 9 states so far including texas cementing his dominance in the south exit polls link his success to strong support from african-american older and suburban voters meanwhile senator bernie sanders has won 3 states and is on track to win the biggest prize california sanders is particularly popular with
9:02 am
younger and latino voters. biden is now leading the race with 450 delegates but sanders is keeping things interesting with 377 delegates and 91991 delegates are needed to clinch the nomination just a short while ago joe biden addressed his supporters this is what he had to say. our camp parent likes the diversity of this party in this nation and that's how it should be because we need to bring everybody along everybody we've got to be we will but we can't become like him. we can't have a never ending war between the parties we do the president could fight but may know make no mistake about it i can fight but look we need as badly as badly someone who can heal. we are better than this president so get back up and take back their
9:03 am
starter if they had their share we got a 2nd take we can't yet but i sure would make god protect our church thank you thank you thank you i. will do double reporter william glick croft is with me here in the studio joining us from los angeles is the w's alexander knob i'm telling each other it looks like super tuesday has catapulted joe biden well into the lead . yet so want to night for joe biden he secured them a durance he all of the race is something that was inconceivable only a week ago when he was struggling with his companion and many in the party establishment said that he is not the candidates to really around but then we saw his sweeping victory in south carolina thanks to the support among african american
9:04 am
voters and then more and more endorsements started to come in with he's 2 rivals ammi close and pete booted teach and they are very surprising decision to get out of the race and throw their support behind joe biden so that helped him a large and he run states such as massachusetts oklahoma or minnesota states without having a good infrastructure there without having held a single event there so this is very telling as well as to think that he is projected to win texas. william a decisive day for the democrats in their effort to find out who they want to challenge donald trump what's your take. that as alexandra saying is good it helps not. have competition were actually seeing and bernie sanders having
9:05 am
a problem now that joe biden had just a few days ago joe biden was facing competition on the moderate wing of the democratic party with booted judge and club which are taking votes or the moderate votes are being spread among several different moderate candidates leaving bernie sanders more or less on his own now those moderate candidates are gone joe biden is basically left standing with those moderates support many of the vote their voters are former voters or would be voters going to biden now bernie sanders is left with the one other progressive candidate that being elizabeth warren and we saw for example in massachusetts joe biden quite surprisingly won massachusetts which is elizabeth warren's home state and a neighboring state to bernie sanders but the the progressive or the left wing vote scott split among those 2 candidates leaving joe biden to win this is one example of how joe biden was able to succeed quite quite well for himself tonight well bernie sanders is still very much in the game he's trailing joe biden but he's
9:06 am
still very much up there let's take a look at what he said to his supporters earlier on. you know you were the absolute competence we're going to win the democratic nominee should auburn. to defeat the most dangerous president in their history this country the robin we're going to win the but. a defiant bernie sanders there but to clinch the nomination bernie sanders still has to beat joe biden what's the strategy for sanders for winning over more moderate democrats moving forward given that sand. is pretty far left of center.
9:07 am
well he's comparing is saying that he will continue to reach to different groups of voters to convince them that he is addressing issues that are also important to them and to convince them that there needs to be a revote lucian and a new approach to be done however when we analyze super tuesday and what happens on super tuesday we have to say that yes bernie sanders is projected to win the fornia but that was expected because this state a state plays to he strength with young voters latino voters but he was apparently not able to extend his appeal with older voters and with african americans and americans and and that's dede his candidacy in swing states
9:08 am
states such as the ginia and north carolina so he has definitely a lot of work to do if he wants to be the democratic nominee. william super tuesday has given his 2 clear front runners in bernie sanders and joe biden elizabeth warren has already dropped out of the well not dropped out but she has dropped to the bottom of the of the list there in terms of work she's polled and she's pulling together. also together with michael bloomberg rather low coming out of super tuesday do you think they're going to drop out. that is the big question michael bloomberg has already reported is going to quote reassess his campaign quite soon which is usually code for dropping out or suspending operations which if so leaves you want to wonder what this whole $500000000.00 push was for this very daring odd strategy. if his just go after super tuesday if he's just going to drop
9:09 am
out right after super tuesday elizabeth warren also has money in the bank to keep going the question is if she really can. there are a lot of rules in place in the democratic party that allow her to still have some democrats excuse me some delegates even though she has performed very well she could push for what's called a contested convention where they will have to be many series of voting at the democratic convention in the summer to find that nominee and she would hope that she might eat out a win there but there's to be a lot of pressure on her to drop out and let this be a 2 person race between biden in the center and bernie sanders on the left in the races in the every reporter william blue cross and in los angeles of these wonderful moment thank you both. let's take a look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. tornadoes that tore through the southern us states of tennessee disrupted super tuesday voting there and parts of the state at least 20 poor people died in the
9:10 am
storms with the search for bodies continuing worst hit was the capital nashville. rescuers are searching for dozens of people missing after landslides hit several cities in the brazilian state of some polo at least 16 people are confirmed dead so far brazil's heaviest populated heavily populated southeast has suffered an intense rainy season this year causing flooding and landslides. and north korea has for the 1st time published comments attributed to kim you know join the sister of the country's leader kim jong un in a statement kim describes south korea as gangster like for criticizing north korean military drills analysts say the comments indicate an increase in kim's statue status in the regime. here in europe a sign of solidarity with greece as the e.u. grapples with a new chapter in the migration crisis european union leaders have held emergency
9:11 am
talks in the greek tell of custom yes on the country's border with turkey greece accuses turkey of encouraging migrants to cross its borders illegally and into neighboring bugg areas as well which is also a new state just days ago ankara said it would no longer prevent moderates from trying to leave its territory and that's sparking fears of a new wave of migration into the european union. people are still stuck on the turkish side of the border searching for any possible way to get to greece and further into year at. as it look just over there the greek soldiers are watching us with that they're not allowing us to enter it's just 15 to 20 meters away. but they won't let us in. because we don't wait here for 4 or 5 months we are determined to wait we will not leave we won't give up
9:12 am
and when they finally open the gates we will and if they don't we will wait here have been is i don't know if this is turkey's game or europe's want but they're playing with us they put us in a miserable situation e.u. leaders came to see the situation for themselves after greece asked for help to secure its land and sea entry points. europe has not been up to the task of dealing with my question questions i hope this crisis will serve as a wake up call for everyone to assume the responsibility of the e.u. leaders announced 700000000 euros in assistance support from its border protection agency and patrol vessels now is the time for concerted action and cool halves and acting based on our values turkey is not an enemy and people not just means to reach
9:13 am
a goal we would all do well to remember both in the days to come greek authorities say they've prevented tens of thousands of people from crossing the border trucks have arrived with supplies blankets and pillows for me shift shelters those looking for to europe are preparing for more days if not weeks or months camping out in no man's land. and joining us now from turkey just across the border from greece is our correspondent yulia han you hear that e.u. is giving support to greek authorities dealing with the situation at the border what's happening now on the turkish side where you are. now i'm at so one of the main border crossings between tacky and greece not right now on the turkish side of the border now this is the place where in the past days thousands of refugees and migrants had to gather seeking passage to european union territory. the borders to greece would be open now we know they are not we can
9:14 am
actually move very close to this border crossing because turkish soldiers have sealed the area off they're not letting journalists in so i can't tell you how many people are still stranded there in this buffer zone between the 2 countries but the situation over there appears to be tens we heard shots with fire there we don't know where exactly they were coming from from the greek side or the tucker side we've also seen ambulances rushing pass by here so people apparently have been injured now this is the situation right here at this border what i can also tell you is that i see over there at least 7 buses offering rides back to stumble to the migrants for about 80 turkish lira which is 12 euro so there are taxi drivers here as well and one driver told us that about 40 to 50 people had already left this morning families mostly with the small children and he expects more people to go
9:15 am
back return to istanbul during the day. clearly succeeded in getting the attention regarding the refugee situation is turkey. has responded so far. well it appears present strategy or ramping up pressure on europe by sending refugees towards the european union border is has not worked out at least e.u. leaders say they stand behind greece they support greece in protecting its borders and this despite the brutal measures border guards have used in recent days in keeping migrants and refugees out now prison edwin's communications director on twitter accused the european union off adopting a security air oriented approach instead of a humanitarian one to this crisis he again accused the european union a failing to honor its commitments under the 26th refugee deal and he basically
9:16 am
says the e.u. it's closing its eyes to the other major humanitarian catastrophe in the making there in syria's it led province we know that hundreds of thousands of people are waiting there seeking safety from syrian regime attacks and this is indeed what many analysts and observers say this is a crisis that the e.u. has ignored for way too long and they can do so and he longer. turkey is hosting. this. let me talk about the people who came here in the past days in the phone believe that the border would indeed be open many have actually stayed here for days they have been sleeping outside in the open families with children with nothing more than a few blankets it's very cold here they didn't have enough food they they don't
9:17 am
have enough to drink so for these people the situation here was terrible it was desperate and we also met migrants here yesterday who told us that they actually had made it to the greek side but then they were detained by greed border guards they would beaten up they showed us the bruises on that backs pretty horrible and they told us their phones and their money had been taken away from them and then they were sent back to turkey and they actually didn't know what to do because they don't have the money to pay a bus ride back to the circuit city where they originally came from so this is the situation for the people here and this is basically a consequence of all the political developments we have seen in recent days. thank you so much. there in turkey. now the corona virus has the world firmly in its grip china is reporting a decrease however in the number of new cases for the 3rd day in
9:18 am
a row the death toll in the country however has. is now nearing 3000 in other developments italy's death toll has jumped by almost 50 percent to 79 chile and argentina have reported their 1st cases of 19 and australia's largest supermarket chain has introduced rationing of toilet paper after panic buying hit stores in recent days. meanwhile in hong kong all the coronavirus has forced people to either sell or work from home on instructions of their employers we look at one family dealing with confinement at home. so we have some rice talk about forebears at rice dirt or is ready for a possible walk down water you know very social you know they're our family have been spending a lot of time indoors as the city battles to contain the coronavirus parents have a battle with boredom on their hands my. being read out for. a week or 2.
9:19 am
with schools closed to the children digging into studies alone and with derek's company telling staff to work from home the kitchen table has become a co-working space hong kong is still free to go outside though the virus is a rival brought an abrupt end to large gatherings like the months of political protests that gripped this city in recent months. this if i was utter i thought it came at a good time you know where where and why we are where we are saudi fighter you know that a couple months ago i hope that you know this. virus hopefully will bring us i tried to get there but some say the quarantine conditions have strained divided families in the past before the they can steal a state as day old and in to avoid the like the corals with the family members but
9:20 am
these days they have to stay at home and without any choice is the day we have to like days like this situation or somehow it will also create more tension within the family. the broader social impact of these measures it may take longer to emerge but for now the al family is coping fine with the confinement. joining us this morning to talk about the corona virus and it spread is our science correspondent derrick williams good morning to her. the fire killed over 3000 people there are dozens of deaths here in europe already is there any prospect of stopping this well i think it's interesting to see in the discourse how the experts have moved away from this idea of containment although not officially the w.h.o. still the goal is containment officially but they've moved away from that idea and are moving towards the idea of mitigation now the only country that's managed to in some ways contain it so far to some extent has and china and you see this question
9:21 am
of mitigation is the question is are they going to be a 2nd wave of infections there. after they get this 1st one under control here in germany they're talking about longer term questions of how are we going to deal with large numbers of people possibly in hospitals how are we going to deal with the with the medical supplies. one way or the other what's very very clear is that a key aspect of fighting the current a virus all along has been testing so we decided to take a look at how it works. determining whether or not someone has the corona virus isn't as simple and straightforward as it sounds the process generally begins when a patient complains of symptoms like fever or a dry cough the challenge is distinguishing a coded 19 infection from the flu or other respiratory conditions because the symptoms are so similar testing begins with a swab sample usually taken from the mouth or nose although experts believe mucous
9:22 am
coughed up directly from the lungs is a better indicator many of the various tests use a method known as the polymerase chain reaction p.c.r. it works like this if a sample contains the corona virus the chemicals in a test kit begin to react with its unique genetic material and start copying it over and over again the copies are tagged with the dye so even when low loads of virus are in a sample they grow more and more detectable with each new generation of copies. one such test for the corona virus was developed in berlin back in january by dr coast john to austin and his team who can take several hours to get a positive for a negative result. ups will look at all recipe orders some specific ingredients that they will receive after like 2 days at the same time order this small or cool for us that they will also receive within very short time. and then
9:23 am
they can start testing in the last few weeks the w.h.o. has sent some 250000 have to austin's p.c.r. kits to labs across the planet the means to detect the virus quickly will play a vital role in combating it effectively but in parts of the world like africa the technology is still far from common. so testing is obviously very important how big is the gap between the demand for corona virus testing and the availability of kits and expertise for that well i think that depends obviously very much um on where you are china at the moment says that they're producing and carrying out over a 1000000 tests we. south korea they've tested well over 100000 people they've set up these mobile testing centers on streets where they're just taking people basically out of the cars and testing them straight away italy they're all another hot spots they've already tested in excess of 20000 people but you can compare that
9:24 am
to places like iran where where they're they're really far behind the curve on the us and sub-saharan africa and interestingly also and the u.s. there are only going to few 100 tests performed there i think that by the end of the and people are dying in the u.s. as well a number of deaths are already out in washington state understand there's something of a scandal that merge there tell us more about you know it's really the centers for disease control appear to really drop the ball on this that has to some extent to do with what the structure the way that they that this whole testing for. is launched and gets going in the u.s. generally the c.d.c. is the one that gets the testing up and running and then they handed they're supposed to handed over to them to the commercial producers of the test now the c.d.c. itself produced its 1st tests and one of the regions and the test didn't more and so they've sort of stopped in that they're supposed to be up to what they call phase 3 which is commercial production of test at this point and they haven't
9:25 am
reached that it's really got a lot of people scratching their heads what about people who may have the buyers but aren't showing any symptoms and could be walking around spreading it i mean is there anything that can be done to mitigate that risk when what you're talking about here is what's called a logical testing and there's a comparison between 0 logical testing and and molech and molecular testing were to whether you're testing for the active virus do you actually have it or have you had it then in the past and and so singapore has come up with a test an antibody test last week that will be able to show that they came up with it to kind of tie. a connection between 2 different clusters that was unexplainable for them and so this the sewer logical testing testing whether or not people have had it in the past is going to be very important moving forward into the future because that's going to tell us this big shadowy number of how many people really have gotten it and maybe been asymptomatic so that has that
9:26 am
a knock on effect by telling us what the fatality rates look like very important to track the virus see where it's going and and good to know to the it is not as fatalist as some other viruses have been derek williams from a scientist thank you so much. just reminder the top story we're following for you here today on the w. news in the u.s. race for the democratic presidential nomination joe biden has sealed his comeback after a nationwide wins in na and of the super tuesday primary states including texas senator bernie sanders looks set to bag the biggest electoral prize all california disappointing results for former new york mayor mike bloomberg and senator elizabeth warren mean that they have to reassess their campaign. don't forget you can always get to the news on the go just hello daryn from up from google play or from the app store that will give you access to all the latest news
