ahead of bernie sanders albus 5th morning and mike bloomberg look to music test their fading campaigns plus demand for corona virus testing kits is booming around the world we'll find out why they're so fruitful in keeping the virus in check. i'm home assman thanks for joining us there have been a fresh confrontations at the turkish greek border between migrants seeking to enter the european union and police determined to stop the security forces have been using tear gas to prevent groups of migrants and refugees from crossing the land border they've made repeated attempts to breach the frontier in recent days thousands of people have been stuck in no man's land outside the turkish city of a deer in a sense friday and the situation on the greek islands closest to turkey has also

been deteriorating on lesbos long a flashpoint in the migration crisis refugees and locals have been clashing with police. standoff at the port of mytilene me unless of course a group of migrants heard there were ships ready to take them to the mainland but police wouldn't let them through and with more migrants arriving from turkey the situation on the island is tense residents say they cannot take in any more migrants. we as locals stand up against this. is the lead man i mean we want to make it clear to the local authorities the parliament and the government that we will not accept any new migrants in the cab and then make that national. some are taking drastic action to get their message across a new an occupied migrant shelter was set on fire on tuesday. right wing
12:03 pm
extremists even blocked entry to migrants and humanitarian aid during a visit to a greek turkish border crossing e.u. leaders and around $700000000.00 euros in assistance still greece's prime minister called for more to be done. europe has not been up to the task of dealing with my question question i hope this crisis will serve as a wake up call for everyone to assume responsibility. but there are no signs of that at the border where migrants are stuck in a no man's land and wanted by both sides. let's get more now from our correspondent joins us from turkey just across the border from greece either yulia develop a developing situation where you are at the border what's happening on the turkish side. well i'm it's one of the main the border crossing points between taki and greece and there have been some quite dramatic
12:04 pm
scenes further away from me here at the border where hundreds of migrants are still trying to cross into greece into e.u. territory now we can't move any closer because turkish soldiers have sealed this area off they're not letting journalists in right now but according to the reports we're getting and we heard shots were fired earlier greek border guards have used tear gas again against refugees to keep them out there are some reports that something have been fired from the takesh side as well it's a little chaotic as i mentioned and refugees in the area refugees migrants have been trying to cross they sent us journalists covering the situation videos on what's up with the dramatic scenes actually the refugees are saying greek
12:05 pm
a border guards have fired. at them they say several people have been injured and here on the turkish side we saw several ambulances passed so people have been injured and the situation that remains very tense it seems some dramatic scenes over there at the border. is it satisfied. no i don't think so i mean prison edwin says try to pressure on europa by sending refugees to war the border as it seems has not worked out so far because e.u. leaders yesterday said they would stand by they would support greece they actually thanks greece for protecting the borders despite all the brutal methods greek border guards have been using in recent days against migrants and refugees a local government governor the local governor of this region here in turkey was at
12:06 pm
the scene a little he accused of human rights violations and he also said turkey will keep its for this to europe open because he says turkey already hosts so many refugees it's at its limits and it can't take in any more and that's the line of argumentation we hear from other turkish officials they say the e.u. is focusing on security and not on what you money tarion issues and they're turning a blind eye to the yemenis here in situation the crisis in syria is it live where hundreds of thousands of people are basically waiting and seeking security from syrian regime bombings over there and this is what turkey has been warning about so it remains to be seen if they're going to keep the pressure off a what's going to happen here in the next days at the border. children what does all this chaos. trying to cross.
12:07 pm
many of them have been waiting here for about 6 days now they came and the firm believe that this border would be open but then they realize that's not true people have camped stayed day and night outside in the open in the cold families with little children they don't have enough to eat and nuff to drink they only have basically blankets to somehow you know protect them against the elements it's been very tough for them we've also talked to myron's here who say they made it to greece or then detained by greek border guards have beaten up their phones were being taken from them their money was being taken from them they showed us the bruises they have from these beatings and then they were sent back to turkey they told us and now they don't have even the money to get a bus ticket back to stumble or the other places where they came from now we actually also see buses here in the area offering rights back to istanbul for about
12:08 pm
18 that's 12 year olds so the situation is very uncertain we see people are going back but still there are at least hundreds of people still waiting here at this border crossing trying to make it to the other side. ok you leon there for us at the turkish greek border thank you very much for your reporting. all projections from these super tuesday primaries in the united states show former vice president joe biden taking the lead against the other democratic candidates for president biden now has 453 delegates after winning 9 of these super tuesday races so far but the race on over for sanders his 4 wins on super tuesday put him at 382 delegates now to clinch the democratic party's nomination a candidate needs the magic number of 1991 delegates was super tuesday proof that joe biden's campaign for the democratic nomination is
12:09 pm
alive and well just a few days ago the pressure the furnace of the credit campaign to get. i think a south carolina variation to save i was. our charo already got to super tuesday be over well it may be over the other guy was the former u.s. vice president can now claim to be the front runner for the democratic presidential nomination exit polls linking success to strong support from african-americans as well as older and suburban virtues i'm a moderate myself so i think his message can reach a lot of people who are in the middle rich both left and right by been a big fan of his since the obama administration senator bernie sanders is by no means out of the race for the democratic nomination just yet tonight ards oh you are the absolute confidence we're going to win the democratic nomination
12:10 pm
was the and we're all going to the feet the most dangerous president if the history of this country the. sanders went into super tuesday as the frontrunner he's particularly popular with young and latino surges and i think that bernie sanders has what it takes areas that the people that i was hoping very would do better in some of the states it was a little exciting at the crossing at the same time 2 other hopefuls senator elizabeth warren and former new york man michael bloomberg performed poorly they're facing calls to suspend their campaigns and let voters choose between biden and santas super tuesday is an important date in the presidential election calendar but it only represents about one 3rd of the delegates that are up for grabs nationwide the campaign now moves on to michigan and 5 other states holding primaries next tuesday 350 more delegates are up to be won. by let's get more now on super tuesday joining
12:11 pm
in the studio for one call here is us political analyst and professor at bard college here in berlin. what a day for joe biden i mean he won at least 9 states including some he had even really set foot in recently what was behind this big time success for i think 2 things the and they're related the 1st is that the middle lane got a lot less crowded a following the south carolina primary and senator. and. to judge both getting out of the middle lane those votes went to bible moderate candidates there as the moderate moderate candidate that's the bit the other thing i think what we did not see until really this week past weekend 72 you hours ago. your inning and the depth of the desire for. an obama era restoration and that is represented by. joe biden he has
12:12 pm
played that melody and i think that at least among the democrats is a winning strategy for him sanders also had a big night he won a few states including the big prize of the night california with lots of delegates it's looking like a 2 person race could sanders catch up at this point. in many ways it's like a sailing race once you sort of get ahead with the lead you just have to maintain your lead it's going it's going to be a lot harder for sanders from this point on i think we don't want to underestimate the importance of both bloomberg and warren and watch what they do because if we go into the party. convention without a majority. and go into a 2nd round then suddenly 16 percent of the so-called superdelegates the party establishment will have a say and that looks much better for biden and for sanders well the next question
12:13 pm
was going to be you know if you're bloomberg or you board and you see you see this pretty poor showing today do you think about dropping out. for 500. a $100000000.00 having america samoa and a lot of 3rd place finishes the only thing that i could really imagine that might play a strategic role for him is preventing a majority going into the convention of either candidate and being so to speak a kingmaker at the table in buying and with elizabeth ward it's very difficult for me to guess unless she is hoping to take votes from bernie sanders is it possible to say that here in europe europeans are rooting for anybody in this democratic race well let's just say compared to the president the current president of the united states we are looking at a stable of european champions the only person that the europeans should be probably rooting for would be whoever has the highest likelihood of winning the

next presidential election so voting for a winner there i guess the us political analysts are in color thanks very much to be here. our let's take a look now at some of the other stories making headlines around the world the southern u.s. state of tennessee has declared a state of emergency after suffering its deadliest tornadoes in 7 years at least 24 people died in the storms with the search for bodies continuing worst hit were areas around the capital city nashville. u.s. forces have bombed taliban targets in afghanistan after militants killed at least 16 afghan government soldiers it's hacks north of quddus the resumption of hostilities comes less than a week after washington signed a peace deal with the taliban. rescuers are searching for dozens of people missing after landslides had several cities in the brazilian state of south paolo at least 16 people are confirmed dead so far brazil's heavily populated southeast has suffered an intense rainy season so far this year causing flooding and landslides.

swedish activists gretta to mark as many european commission president of the founder lion as the bloc prepares to publish a draft climate plan it will commit to the e.u. $20.00 emissions by the year 2050 you but very has criticised the draft she says the e.u. should be more ambitious in the short term. by turning out to the coronavirus and some good news china is reporting a decrease in the number of new cases for the 3rd day in a row but the death toll in the country where the virus began is now nearing some 3000 people in other developments italy's death toll has jumped by nearly 50 percent to 79 meanwhile iraq holand she lay in argentina have reported their 1st cases of the virus and australia's largest supermarket chain is rationing sales of toilet paper that's after panic buying hit stores in recent days meanwhile
12:16 pm
criticism is growing of the u.s. government for failing to quickly implement effective testing for the pathogen knowing if a sick person is infected with the virus is the 1st step in determining who needs to be quarantined our next report looks at the testing method developed here in berlin and now being used across the world. determining whether or not someone has the corona virus isn't as simple and straightforward as it sounds the process generally begins when a patient complains of symptoms like fever or a dry cough the challenges distinguishing a coded 19 infection from the flu or other respiratory conditions because the symptoms are so similar testing begins with a swab sample usually taken from the mouth or nose although experts believe mucous coughed up directly from the lungs is a better indicator many of the various tests use a method known as the polymerase chain reaction or p.c.r. it works like this if a sample contains the corona virus the chemicals in
12:17 pm
a test kit begin to react with its unique genetic material and start copying it over and over again the copies are tagged with the dye so even when low loads of virus are in a sample they grow more and more detectable with each new generation of copies one such test for the corona virus was developed in berlin back in january by dr close down to austin and his team you can take several hours to get a positive for a negative result. apps will look at all recipe orders some specific ingredients that they will receive after like 2 days at the same time order this small a cure all for us that they will also receive within very short time. and then they can start testing in the last few weeks the w.h.o. has sent some 250000 have to austin's p.c.r. kids to labs across the planet the means to detect the virus quickly will play
12:18 pm
a vital role in combating it affectively but in parts of the world like africa the technology is still far from common. eric williams was the author of that piece he joins me now in studio for more on coronavirus testing i mean 1st of all how big is the gap between the demand for these tests and the availability of these tests well that depends very much on where you are of china has reported that they're now producing and carrying out upwards of one and a half 1000000 tests a day a day a day. a week a week in a week in the course of a week south korea is that would be the next country that has the most number of people there over 100000 people that they've tested so far they've been set up they've set up these drive through centers where you can actually drive your car up and you can get testing from you are tested on your car which is actually helps cut down on the infection rate among the people who are actually conducting the tests.
12:19 pm
italy is upwards of 20000 tests right now but of course the other big. iran we don't really have a lot of numbers there about the the implication would be that there's not a lot of people getting tested there and interestingly also in the u.s. as we heard earlier in the show there's also in the hundreds let's talk about the u.s. i mean what's going on there we heard about this major scandal right now involving testing for the krona virus in the united states right it's really the centers for disease control seem to have really really dropped the ball that really bungled this pretty badly is it has to do with the way that the that it's set up the way that it set up in the states is that 1st the virus gets isolated by the c.d.c. and then the methods get developed by the c.d.c. and then they pass that along to commercial developers and and they've never made it past that 2nd stage yet they've had to sort of jump over the f.d.a. is not allowed to approve testing that hasn't come from the c.d.c. and so they couldn't use for example this test from berlin well they possibly could
12:20 pm
but the way that the it's set up in terms of the regulations in the states the f.d.a. has to approve it they're now doing that the u.s. . it said that by the end of next week there's going to be about a 1000000 test kits available in that they're going to be testing people there's some skepticism out there a lot of outrage in the american media a lot of frustration what if someone has caught the virus they've recovered from it could it test then later detect ok this is a person who who had the virus at 1 point one of these is this is testing for an active infection and what you're talking about as a logical test so that's a blood test that checks to see whether or not you have produced the antibodies antibodies in these proteins produced by the immune system whether you produce the antibodies that fit with a corona virus and so that's something though that is important information to have in the long term for a number of different reasons not least because we believe that many people who have it have have very mild symptoms or might even be asymptomatic so being able to
12:21 pm
prove retrospectively that somebody has had it or not had it is going to for example allow us to define things like the fatality rate and this disease but it's also going to allow us to do things like draw links between clusters of infections that was somebody that might have silently carried it from one to the other not even knowing that they were ill so knowledge is power the more testing we can do them the more numbers we have the better but where do we go from there how do we start to use that information how do we continue to battle the spread of the corona virus and what's been very interesting for me watching the discourse on this over the last couple of months is that we've moved away from the whole ideas and containment containment containment we need to do what we did with sars we need to shut it down at the source as quickly as we possibly can and then it just goes away but so the w.h.o. is continuing to say we need to contain this disease but the only place that it's actually that could arguably be said said to have contained the disease so far is
12:22 pm
china and of course they've done it with these drug kone in measures that are not going to work in other parts of the world and so you have there also the question is how long is this high heat is how long is it going to get. and you could there be a 2nd wave of infections with people bringing it back to china sometime in the near future and so we've moved away in this discourse away from the idea of containment towards what's called mitigation which is that experts are beginning to say i think that we have to accept that this is going to be endemic where do we go from here in terms of preparations and where do we move forward in the future in terms of of planning for this derek williams with science thank you very much for well after more than 5 years of civil war rival leaders in south sudan have overcome their dive visions and formed a unity government last month but many people are still traumatized by the war especially the thousands of young people who were recruited as child soldiers against their will girls are often rapes and used as sex slaves the un is trying to
