7:25 pm
that happened just 2 weeks ago well we earlier heard from one of the sisters of one of the victims aside as she me her brother say eagerness are hashemi was killed during that terror attack well before the german president fine called her my steinmeier was also speaking at the ceremony and he said so many things that i'd like to discuss now with my colleague a kid brady. what was so poignant about his address is that he unequivocal he and there was no doubt about that this was a racist attack and that germany has a problem. and i think one of the most poignant points was that. made it very clear as well that he could no longer say. he can recognize what it feels like to be targeted as one of these people who was targeted in this attack
7:26 pm
people that are targeted every day by racism in germany at the same time there was quite humble in a way to step back as of course immediately after this attack he said this is an attack on us all and this is an i heard in the in the days after the attack as well from several local people saying this was an attack on everyone this was an attack on us because we are from a minority group who may have darker skin hair might be darker we may have been on stereotypically german name we are the ones who feel attacked by this and targeted and so that's something that was very different in my speech today that he made clear that the germans also need to become aware of what that might feel like to be ostracized every day to be working your whole life as he's put it to feel like you're accepted despite being german yourself and then he talks as well about how
7:27 pm
there are no different levels of german us and of course this feeds into a much bigger debate in germany right now about identity something that germany has been grappling with for decades what it means to be german who is considered german and of course we still hear all sorts of. terminology being thrown around today when particularly this idea of being b o h sometimes even laughed at but this idea that you are generalizing but what's what how what extent do you have to go she walks in you have to reach to really be accepted as german these were people that were born in germany whose sometime parents are born in germany as well and regardless even if they're migrants and become german citizens what makes them german and this is such a big issue right now it is a big issue because there's a question about who is an authentic german right who gets. desired. things like authenticity but what i want to ask you is you know we saw the chancellor there
7:28 pm
standing shoulder to shoulder with relatives of these victims we saw the president we saw all these leaders standing with the victims how far does that go to telling the general public this is no longer ok we need to stop inflammatory discussions about you know who's in who's out who's really german who's not because it could lead to things like what we saw unfold in one out yes certainly and there's also a huge political element there as well of course we had. talking as well about how this crime didn't happen by chance that there was a history of exclusion and discrimination of people and that was very much a message directed at the far right particularly the far right if they would go as far to say the far right after a party here in germany and there's been a lot of criticism of that path
7:29 pm
a full feeding far right rhetoric in recent years and so this is something that needs to be dealt with by politically and in german society as well. the entire country of course is trying to still come to grips about what unfolded in that concludes our special coverage just thank you for spending this part of meeting with us. during the conflict. year after year the war in germany goes on within our current indian sites but who's really trying to stop it my guess is we here in munich is the country's foreign minister mohammad abdullah and the german authorities are civilian casualties would be enormous human suffering. from the. conflict. in 60 minutes phone d.w.
