up tonight tear gas and shots fired on the border between greece and turkey greek guards use force to push back migrants migrants who were told just a few days ago by turkey you're free to go to your. i'm burnt off it's good to have you with us we begin tonight here in germany remembering the horror of han l. 2 weeks after a racially motivated killing spree in the western german town the country's leaders today joined thousands of people including survivors and relatives to remember the victims a far right gunman shot 9 people dead in shisha barged in the town 2 weeks ago he then went on to kill his own mother before turning the gun on himself german chancellor angela merkel joined victim's friends and relatives at the ceremony today. in the aftermath of the attack she described racism as
8:02 pm
a poison in german society and during this ceremony german president. acknowledged germany has a problem with racism and islamophobia he called on all germans to defend democracy here's part of what he had to say he demonstrated on some good minds leaped every person who lives in our country must be able to live in safety and peace our state has the duty to protect this right. to wonder who has to do more and must do everything necessary. responsibility falls 1st of all on our institutions on the men and women at the top and this responsibility falls on all of us. it challenges us to stand together against hate and persecution. against terror and violence. and that is the measure by which we will be judged. as the german president there
8:03 pm
earlier this evening i'm joined now in the studio by my colleague and our political correspondent keith brady key you heard the speech the president talking about responsibility there what did you make of what he had to say there are a lot of interesting elements in that speech one thing that stood out to me as well was when he said that this crime didn't happen by chance that there was actually a back story that to this a back story of of hate speech and exclusion and discrimination against minority groups here in germany and that was very clear the criticism of this normalization of far right rhetoric in germany in recent years a swipe if you will even at the far right. party but also it was interesting that he stepped back from some of the comments that he made initially after this attack as well saying rather symbolically that this was an attack that that was all and of
8:04 pm
course it was a lot of criticism particularly from the community in hanauer uber this comments when they're older they understood symbolically what he meant it was fair enough that they also said to me while i was in had no no it doesn't affect everyone and you don't know what it's like every day to be ostracized and be constantly trying to prove your worth as a german and this was a very much at the center of his speech as well as i issued right now range of me about identity and what it means to be you know the direct aftermath of the attack know we've heard time and time again since then that this attack was a wake up call for germany what did what have you heard to me how bad is the far right extremists seen in this country well this was a wake up call germany has certainly missed many many alarms already this was the deadly far right extremist attack in germany in less than a year of course we had the killing of the shooter. on killing of
8:05 pm
a regional politician in june last year he was refugee and then of course we had the attempted and semitic attack in which to passers by were killed in the eastern city of haliburton going back before that we had the notorious n.s.u. the national socialist underground murders and for years now there have been concerns raised about the far right infiltrating military infiltrating all thora t's in germany of course there is an overhaul plans to try and get to the root of these problems but of course there is a lot of work to be done which is going to take a lot more than than a few commissions hair in there to get to what the but at the end of the day is a very fundamental problem here and 70 can be done overnight either he broods always thank you. our here's a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world u.s. forces have bombed taliban targets in afghanistan after militants killed at least 16 afghan government soldiers in attacks north of conducts the resumption of

until march 15th and the german airlines of tonnes of said that it will ground $150.00 aircraft due to the coronavirus. well now to greece where tensions over migration have led to violent scenes today on the country's border to turkey it was triggered when turkey said that it would no longer start lie grants in its territory from trying to reach the european union was since then greek border guards have been using force to repel thousands of migrants trying to cross into greece many of them are refugees fleeing war zones in syria and beyond but after finding europe stories shut they have now become stranded else signed the turkish city of a deer in. her shots and tear gas at the greek turkish border tensions are rising here as a new chapter in the migrant crisis unfolds turkey accused greece of killing a migrant and wounding others on wednesday athens says the allegations are fake
8:08 pm
news people desperate to reach the european union are stuck in limbo unwanted by both countries with no safe place to return to. live in monte home i don't have a home i have nothing to go back to if i've returned i would have to start from the beginning so going forward is the only option for me and my son. got a lot of. good as we've been here for 4 days there's no food nothing then they didn't open the border i need to go back it's been days. he you council president shall michel met with turkish president wretch of tayyip erdogan in ankara for crisis talks europe has now offered an additional $170000000.00 euros for vulnerable groups within syria but he will fishel say that at obama's decision to open turkey's borders has not increased trust between the 2 sides. are for more now
8:09 pm
we want to check in with boris just because he is the spokes person in greece for the u.n.h.c.r. that's the un's agency for growth. g.'s forces good to see you we know that this is a fluid situation not only at the border but also on lesbos which is also a main entry point for people coming from turkey how was the situation at the moment where you are well the level most of us of the situation thankfully has been calmer since yesterday haven't had any boat arrivals but it has been a tense few days including because of intimidation and violent attacks against united syrian workers from some groups of the locals but also against journalists we've been deploying these actions we've also been affected on sunday one of our senior most colleagues on the island was verbally harassed and pushed as she was addressing a group of locals that were not allowing the boat to disembark on that boat there
8:10 pm
were families with young children they were telling them to go back later on that evening on sunday a transit location that we've been running for 4 years with the help of n.g.o.s for new arrivals in the north of the island was burned to the ground in arson attacks so thankfully these the past couple of days it's been much calmer but obviously the situation is still quite fluid and it's understandable that the local communities are been under intense pressure greece has shown incredible compassion and principle to refugees but what we have now is not just the last few days but months of a critical situation on the islands with overcrowding and now $40000.00 asylum seekers that should at least half of them urgently moved to the mainland through the size of government action bourse we got reports finding in tear gas even. some guns being fired in the direction of refugees at the greek turkish border
8:11 pm
today what more can you tell us about that. well the situation is that the last few days there's been quite tons of border with. you we have reports of people being pushed back and of the excessive use of force being used of course states of the gentleman right to their borders to the regular movements but this should be done in a proportionate way with or without excessive use of force and it should allow those who wish to send asylum to have their cases handled in an orderly way so we have been appealing for calm and straight we hope the deeds of these situations will quickly result in the next few days. because of the u.n. h.c.r. spokesperson joining us tonight from the greek island of lesbos we appreciate your time tonight thank you 30 thank you for having me. are you to the united states
