this is d.w. news live from berlin tonight a ceasefire russia and turkey agreed to stop the fighting in syria as it. became after talks in moscow between president vladimir putin and the turkish president want the leaders back opposing sides in syria's conflict and they are trying to reduce tensions after turkish troops were killed by syrian forces last week also
8:01 pm
coming up as violence in northwestern syria forces nearly a 1000000 people the fleet a standoff over migrants and refugees at the border between turkey and greece is growing turkey has deployed 1000 special forces there and to the united states former front runner and progressive champion elizabeth warren ends her campaign for the democratic presidential nomination. i will not be running for president in 2020 but i guarantee i will stay in the fight for all the hard working folks across this country have gotten the short end of the stick over now that's been the fight of my life and you will continue to be so indorsing one of her former rivals could reshape the race for the white house but warren says she's not ready to give her support to anyone not yet.
8:02 pm
i'm hearing golf it's good to have you with us there is a possible end to the fighting in northwestern syria tonight turkish president richard tell you a better one and russian president vladimir putin say they have agreed to a cease fire for the countries in the province that ceasefire takes effect at midnight tonight the deal was announced after 6 hours of talks between the 2 leaders today in moscow. earlier we heard from our russia correspondent emily sure when we spoke with her about what exactly the 2 leaders had agreed to. well as you say these talks seem to have been rather tense they went on for over 6 hours 1st there was a tete a tete meeting between put in an air to one then ministers from both sides from both countries joined those talks they've agreed on a ceasefire to come in to force at midnight they've also agreed to create some sort
8:03 pm
of a security corridor or in if live and they've also agreed to start carrying out of a joint patrols between russian and turkish forces in the province they the 2 leaders also emphasize the importance again of fighting terrorists in syria fighting terrorists in that in that province and as well of the territorial sovereignty of syria now of course as one expert who i spoke to ahead of these talks said there have been cease fires in it live before the question is really whether this one will actually laugh. and there was really sure when they're reporting from moscow we're doing you know the big table here is to be a schneider he is the middle east research fellow with the global public policy institute here in berlin it's good to have you on the program turkey and russia they've agreed to this cease fire we don't know how long it's going to last is there any chance that it will hold this time very little chance at best this is
8:04 pm
just another step up the agreement signed today has only 3 provisions that basically freeze the conflict in place as it stands now but does not charge forward another path forward what does it mean for turkey in russia what will they do while the fighting has stopped presumably try and play for more time both sides trying to entrenched themselves support resupplied their respective proxies on the ground and try to involve more international stakeholders on their side international stakeholders what does it mean for turkey to one once nato to get involved those any. sense is that he is that we go party in relationship to russia and so he's been trying to get over the europeans or the americans or nato in a broader framework involved in it but all of these have been reluctant to actually materially contribute to the effort and how do the migrants in the refugees europe's back door step how do they play into that i mean they're being used by the
8:05 pm
turkish president aren't they right so this is one stunned play but it. took a government right now to try and get europe's attention that. what has happened is rather than europe getting involved in it has been a political backlash on himself so the whole thing has blown up in his face a little bit and what about the position of the of saud regime rochelle assad wants to reclaim it province that has not changed right in this ceasefire doesn't change that from day one the syrian government has been very clear that it has wanted to reclaim every inch of syria and every inch means every inch that includes a very strategic border crossing baba how that connects at love to turkey as well as the city which is after all the capital of a major province what about the people on the ground and it looks right now the ones who have not left that is a humanitarian crisis they need aid do you think that it's going to be possible to
8:06 pm
get aid to the mill during the cease fire while aid access has been restricted but it has not broken off the problem is that just sheer scale of the displacement has absolutely overwhelmed response in the area and the cure and ceasefire as it stands right now would not allow for major return of the recently displaced and so it would not really lessen the burden on the humanitarian response when you look at the stakes involved in this would you agree that for turkey and the turkish president the stakes are much higher than for him or putin i mean would you agree that vladimir putin he's concerned basically about the status quo and also about weakening. nato well. one of both invested quite a lot in the russian relationship over the last couple of yes on the whole things definitely politically a much more extensionally than it is a lot of pressure at home to the refugee situation inside turkey turkey has 3500000 refugees mostly syrians but also afghans and so he's really under pressure. resolve
8:07 pm
the refugee situation as he says either inside syria or internationally for putin he basically does not want to surrender his advantages position inside syria so he wants to press this advantage. remain the power broker on the ground and internationally when it comes to the middle east not break his relationship with another one at the same time so what we're actually going to see is a sort of phased step by step recapture of it lip to be assured of the global public policy institute here in berlin to be as we appreciate your insights thank you or let's take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world iranian authorities have some an iranian director muhammad to serve a one year prison term and this comes just days after he won the berlin film festival's top prize for his movie there is no evil or was it is last year for
8:08 pm
anti-government propaganda his lawyer says that he will not turn himself into authorities due to the corona virus outbreak in iran an explosion and fire at a refugee camp in the gaza strip have killed at least 9 company and injured more than 50 officials say the blaze broke out at a bakery before engulfing a crowded market initial investigations suggest a leak from gas cylinders may have caused the explosion. the climate campaign a greater tool bag and other activists from across europe have demonstrated outside the european commission in brussels the protest comes a day after the e.u. unveiled a new climate wall that proposes making the european union carbon neutral by the year 2050 the activists are calling for swifter action. to one in putin held talks in moscow today the crisis at turkey's border with greece is intensifying turkey says it is sending
8:09 pm
a 1000 riot police to the region they've been ordered to halt the return of refugees who have been pushed back by greek authorities after trying to cross into the european union the migrants headed for the border or we could go after turkey said that it would no longer stop them from entering your rickets ortiz say 35000 people have tried to cross into their country in the past week a reporter thunder met a group of migrants who made it to greece he has their story. exhausted and with nowhere to turn to these young pakistani men managed to slip into greece. says the turkish military force them to the border he tells us they have been walking aimlessly for the last 10 hours. being moved from one side to the other by the military with stuck in the middle at the beginning there were around 25 of us but only 3 made it the others were arrested. they know that if they are
8:10 pm
caught by the greek police they too will be arrested. others didn't even get that far. like these migrants who gathered behind the border fence in turkey in an attempt to cross greek security forces used tear gas against them and allegedly even deadly force. these images from the other side of the border were given to us by the turkish government injured migrants being carried around from the fence. on caresses greek security forces shot live rounds into the crowds killing one and injuring 5 others a claim the greek government has called fake news pressure continues along the greek frontier almost a week after turkey said its border to the european union was open to everyone it's a cross. for the tough handling of the situation greek authorities have not only received praise by european leaders but also the highest cleric in greece
8:11 pm
archbishop almost travel to the border town custom yes for a special service in honor of the greek security forces and those living in the border region yes this is the move. this you know that we are proud of your what makes this case proud of your struggle is the most not only for the army not only for greece one of a view of the european friends partners and allies should be here as well because we have to support these borders all together. people here in the border town of custom yes for along have felt abandoned by the european union local mayor. is calling for a common and sustainable solution to deal with migration but for the people waiting at the border he has offered up a little hope anybody can bet if. there is no chance for these millions of refugees to end up in europe and in great spokesman is there wouldn't be. i wish for all these people to reach their destination minutes in the lava but what's happening
8:12 pm
right now is impossible. not only for us. but for all of europe to take in these blots numbers of people. whom by sheer and his friends have made it to europe but their final destination germany is still a long way to go i'm out on a mission and. we will keep walking we have no car no money no food and nothing to drink we'll just keep walking with god. god i am guard. as they continue their journey they have no idea if they are going to make it but they know they want to get away from this dangerous frontier as fast as they can. in the united states senator elizabeth warren has announced that she is dropping out of the race for the white house her decision comes after
8:13 pm
a poor performance in the latest round of democratic party primary elections sworn surged to the top of the field last summer with a progressive agenda but her failure to win primaries in any states including her home state of massachusetts left her campaign really so today speaking outside her home in cambridge massachusetts warren said that she had misjudged her place in the democratic field i was told at the beginning of this whole underclass that there are too long a progressive white thought very thing anderson is the incumbent for only moderate . one time but for now there's no room for anyone else in the month and i thought it was possible that that wasn't the case that there was more room and more room to run another kind of campaign but evidently that wasn't it that was sort of you know those lives elizabeth warren. for more let's take the story down to washington d.c.
8:14 pm
our correspondent define is on the story for us good evening to you stefan so they're very clear she says there was no room for a campaign line curds i mean is it then is a dead simple mean where did her campaign go so badly so wrong. yeah i think it's a front it appears to be simple but it is of course very complex but just as with one got squeezed out that shows you how polarized not only the country is but also the democratic party is you do have bernie sanders standing for and going for a very very very big progress if liberal intel and you have on the other side joe biden who is. pushing for the you know conservative democrats the middle of the way democrats so to speak and those 2 really squeezed her out in terms of her topic one of the major topics for her was. getting rid of all the
8:15 pm
corruption in washington d.c. while that wasn't all of it of course the pushing women to the women issues to the top of the agenda is that right but. sender's to go all of those issues and when actually a step further and biden took those issues to some degree at least and pulled them back. so that other democrats could kind of feast on this without running away she had no standing with the african-american kraut that's biden and bernie sanders was very successful with the really with the younger folks were young and progressive 30 and under so she had no chance she didn't get the numbers in all the primaries and with that the money dried up and that was it she's out she's out but we understand yesterday both sanders and biden phoned her. you know people want to know is she going to endorse one of them now that she's out of the
8:16 pm
race yeah that's the level of the made by her for the political geeks here what is she doing this important so what is she going to do who is she going to endorse sander or biden and i think nobody has really the answer for this at the moment i don't even think that she is the answer i think there's a lot of soul searching going on what to do because there is of course some things to think about do you give your internet infrastructure to biden then and she doesn't necessarily was politically speaking on par with joe biden or to bernie sanders and there was no love spend either between the my between the santas campaign and the warren campaign so i think that's an open question that needs to be a question mark right now we've just got to be a little bit more patient until she comes out and then will fully give us good reasons for her decision or there may be new endorsement at all that it's also an option to fonzie was on the story boards tonight in washington is different as
8:17 pm
always thank you. now to the latest on the corona virus in the united states california has become the latest state to declare and state of emergency after one person there died in the number of new infections. california joins washington state and florida and letting their governments free up more resources in the battle against the virus meanwhile australia has banned travel from south korea the country with the highest number of cases outside of china switzerland has reported its 1st death from the corona virus and the u.n. has warned that almost 300000000 students around the world face school closures because of the virus. where the virus continues its disrupted spread around the globe here in europe italy is the hardest hit country with over $3000.00 cases and more than $100.00 deaths fears over the virus have forced the italian
8:18 pm
government to close all schools and universities until mid march. school is out in a city but the students on time holiday or universities and schools have been shut across the country and to at least much the 15th part of the emergency measures to try to slow the spread of the corona virus infections have been soaring by around $500.00 per day making it city europe's west hit states. the for some students in rome the coronavirus isn't the most pressing concern. i'm a little worried about my school grades about the lessons we will lose this year i had a class assignment today so i'm a little happy but i'm also a little worried about how school will progress and the fact that we will have to work harder so that we can be ready for next year. but there are if i get the coronavirus o.b.'s i'm young and i can handle us the closure of university worries
8:19 pm
me a bit because of the behind in my exams and pieces they overlap but unfortunately i can't do anything about surviving until. italians and tourists alike have been adapting to the new reality the usually heaving streets now sparse metro stations empty. italy's prime minister just up a container addressed the nation to explain the government's trust it measures and called on everyone to do their part. so well for facing the challenge of the coronavirus it's a challenge with no political color it affects the entire nation it's a challenge that must be won with the help of everybody citizens institutions scientists doctors healthcare professionals civil protection and police forces the whole of italy is called on to play its part of. with many of the countries gyms also closed people have had to change their lifestyles with some opting to work out
8:20 pm
in the fresh air instead. and while many italians have been a bank authorities advice to keep at least one meter distance between each other it's not a guideline being strictly observed by everyone. iran's health minister has announced that all schools and universities in the country will remain closed until the end of the iranian calendar year which is march 20th iran is one of the worst hit countries by the corona virus outbreak and has officially recorded more than 3500 cases that includes 107 deaths. well meanwhile 2 men in iran are being punished after defying coronavirus health warnings by kissing and licking holy shrines it's a problem in the corona era u.w. soccer has that story for us ok well i mean you know it's
8:21 pm
a little bit tongue in cheek here but looking holy shrines does it sound like a good idea. to get out there and it's quite a serious story as these videos have been emerging in social media online of the last week of different holy science in iran of men kissing and making these shrines some clerics believe that these shrines can actually cure all diseases that that's why they doing it now one of these video shows this this man this is been used over a 1000000 times on social media he says he's not afraid of the coronavirus. you can see him headley king in the shrine another video shows a man explaining that he is looking to shine so he can get the virus and somehow inexplicably help other people from getting into other vistas has he says he's taking it away from the shrine by constructing the virus yet 2 of these men have been arrested and they're facing jail time and even flow going for spreading this is just information so it's
8:22 pm
a bit of an odd one like authorities seem to very worried about this even going to like draconian measures like flogging but on the on the on the other hand they're not shutting these sites down they sending a bit mixed mixed messages. and yes it's not a problem if you're the only one licking but that's not the case here so what are really authorities what are they doing about this so i mean iran is one of the worst affected countries outside of china they have the highest death toll outside of china at the moment but there is a lot of secrecy so it's hard to know what numbers to believe health care workers have been saying that there are even security agents in hospitals making sure that they don't spread information outside the hospital and so it's difficult to verify the information but we have. video from tehran. of. disinfecting the streets and we know that's happening you can see that in this video here this was a proposal to send some 300000 militia members around the country is to disinfect.
8:23 pm
that help expose a saying that that might backfire because these are not trained health officials so that might even spread the virus more so it's a bit of a hodgepodge of measures that taking and then on top of that on wednesday president hassan rouhani he rejected an offer from the u.s. of a in in helping with the with the with the outbreak and he said that washington should lift sanctions instead ok so it's always about the sanctions on a lighter note here some dance moves are trending in iran now right tell us about that's true doctors and nurses in hospitals who through a very difficult situation dealing with this virus that started posting videos where the singing and dancing of the calling it the koroma i don't know if we have a name yet but we can probably call in the sahara fuel and as they're imposing these videos to boost morale this one even shows you how to wash your hands if you
8:24 pm
follow if you follow those high movements so we should all probably pay attention to that was right wash your hands. full as always thank you thanks. we want to take you now to northeastern india the remote state money for is said to be the birthplace of modern polo the sport there was traditionally the domain of men but the number of been playing has dwindled since an insurgency which began in the 1980 s. now it's money poor women who were challenging stereotypes to revive in the city. nice round readies has self a battle between many ways she and her teammates have already won in the sport of kings these queens have broken the mold. if when the lama if men can play polo why can't we do it too. we want young female players to
8:25 pm
think like this they watch us play and ask us how to play we tell them don't be scared you will also play like us this is how we encourage young girls to play polo of the mind and what does the interest. is essentially hockey on horses the modern version of the sport originated here in india's manapul states in the early 19th century. later british colonialists took up polo and spread it around the world but now man of poor has been left behind and without these women training intending to the ponies the tradition mice have died out completely. but out of the world will walk community elders and many poor show interest in other sports but not in our state's game polo how are women going to ride horses and play polo that's nonsense desa mentality they have. challenges
