and. this is g.w. news coming to you live from berlin joe biden takes the lead in the u.s. democratic presidential race the former vice president wins big in michigan and other states so is it the beginning of the end for socialist candidate bernie sanders also coming up as countries around the world step up the battle against the coronavirus we look at health paramedics in one of the most worst hit nations south korea for dealing with the disease. plus returning to the scene of
7:01 am
a crime we'll hear from a survivor of one of prince's worst terror attacks and point out how she copes with the trauma of 5 years old. fellow i'm terry martin welcome to the program joe but it appears to have cemented his position as the front runner in the us democratic presidential race the former vice president has scored big wins in 4 of 6 states holding contests in the race to select the democratic nominee including the largest prize michigan results are a blow to biden's rival for the nomination for months senator bernie sanders although some of his supporters say he still has a slim chance of winning is what you're biden had to say to his supporters. this
7:02 am
election is it more and it has character on the ballot the character the candidates the character the nation is on the ballot is more than a comeback in my view arche a pretty sick comeback for the soul this nation. this campaign is taking off and i believe we're going to do well from this point on take nothing for granted one earn every single vote in every single state. well in last week's super tuesday biden leapt ahead in the delegate count and now he's padding his lead the current count currently stands at 823 for biden to sanders 663 delegates reflect popular support in each state and candidate needs at least 1991 of them to win the democratic nomination well it's.
7:03 am
well for more on this let's turn now to reporter peter dali good morning peter so a big night for joe biden but instead enough to knock bernie sanders out of the race well he's not quite there yet but he's certainly closer than anyone thought to you know just a couple weeks ago or even you know a month ago that biden would ever come in this race he did knock it off to a very good start he really bounced back super tuesday beginning of a march and now another major win for biden in 4 states including michigan that he desperately need to pick up to really stick it to sander so he's looking very very strong position or well positioned right now to really clinch the nomination. we'll still see how how sanders takes this but biden is certainly looking very very strong coming out of this super tuesday too is called sanders staked his hopes for a comeback on michigan what went wrong for him there well
7:04 am
a couple of things sanders says for one has kind of built his campaign or or or built himself as a candidate who was able to build this broad coalition driven by young voters by african-american voters working class voters. especially young voters have not turned out for sanders the way that they did in 2016 african-american voters we've seen have tended to site with biden because a lot of them are you know ideologically a lot more moderate a lot more conservative then people traditionally voting for sanders. so what we saw this time around this is also really crucial you know you say there's a saying that people vote with their vol it's and we are releasing the economy doing a lot better than it was in 2016 france is a we see a lot of moderate you know well off suburbanites turning out in droves the turnout numbers for the fight and have been much higher than the. most people expect it so
7:05 am
that is some of the reasons why sanders did not do as well in michigan as. people expected now that biden does have a commanding lead can we expect democrats to come up with a common strategy for defeating trump. frankly i think we're not quite there yet i've spoken to a number of sanders voters who are really torn on this who do not feel particular well about getting behind biden i think there is a decided to keep this going for the senator's campaign for a couple of races to come. a lot can still happen it's not looking good for sanders but i would not expect sanders to back down just yet what about the coronavirus how is that impacting all of this this campaign and did it have an effect on the in the turnout for the primaries which you saw right so we've seen both biden sanders call of rallies that they were going to going to hold there's
7:06 am
a debate coming up on sunday where. there's going to be without a live audience so definitely we are seeing the democratic party taking some precautions. but just based on the turnout we're not seeing any indication really that that has hampered that the coronavirus has in any way hamper turnout so it does seem that they decided to be trump currently he is at least as big as the desire to beat the groan of ours ok peter thanks so much for now a reporter peter. the world health organization says almost 120000 people around the world have been infected by the corona virus many of recovered but more than 4000 have died europe's worst hit country is italy a number of countries have closed their borders with it and there is an unprecedented nationwide lockdown to try to slow the spread of the disease.

meanwhile there's trouble with the neighbors slovenia has closed its border to italy well austria has banned incoming journeys by train and plane moves criticized by french president the manual mccomb. wash it focuses we don't want things to get out of proportion that's why because it needs to work good because it's only the beginning of this epidemic and if we take disproportionate measures they'll be unsustainable in the long run and that's counterproductive i sincerely believe that these are bad decision that european coordination is much more efficient as if it just for. european coordination means working from home the brussels based president of the european parliament is in self isolation after a visit to his native italy. back in rome the president of the italian football federation said that the season already suspended could be abandoned as the coronavirus affects every pillar of italian life. here's

a round up of some of the other coronavirus developments around the world there is good news from china which has officially reported its lowest number of infections since the outbreak started there beijing has also announced that in the epicenter of the outbreak workers in key sectors will be allowed to go back to work but elsewhere infection rates are still increasing in the u.s. there are now more than 1000 confirmed cases the national guard has been deployed to new york suburb that's been quarantined in the u.k. health minister has announced that she has tested positive for the virus. well the outbreak poses a challenge and a risk to health workers treating those who are infected in south korea special operating procedures have been developed for paramedics dealing with suspected cases correspondent frank smith is in seoul and sent us this report.
7:10 am
paramedics in south korea are answering some tough calls in battling the coronavirus for each perspective covert 1000 emergency like this one they take time to put on high level protective gear and only one paramedic attends to possible patients to safeguard the team paramedic one is ready for what comes watching for the telltale symptoms of coronavirus. high fever and coughing. $1000.00 calls are difficult to respond to because we still don't have a clear idea of how to distinguish an actual case from a false alarm. even if a person hasn't traveled overseas but is running a fever you still have to assume the worst because there's an outbreak in the community. there when a 3 hospitals in seoul have suffered clusters of the outbreak closing their emergency rooms other hospitals are at times unavailable because they're
7:11 am
overcrowded when transporting possible coronavirus patients ambulances in seoul sometimes travel long distances so 3 a c.d.c. and emergency command center route paramedics to designated hospitals with space in trio in a negative pressure isolation room which has special ventilation to prevent the spread of the virus. after each call the ambulances are thoroughly disinfected in their interiors sealed to ensure their virus free. and if i ever get infected i'm confident that i would eventually recover given my young age. but i live with my parents and they are older so i'm most worried that i might pass that on to event and there are no guarantees that they could receive the treatment they need in a timely manner because emergency services are so overstretched right now. the
7:12 am
medics at the ambulance center are required to live in isolation eating alone at separate times and maintaining social distancing still team members say that morale has remained good. that we work in a field team now so putting in an extra shift now it's another clone is simply a possible job description. if they needed a supreme allowance we simply have to head down and work time out instead of fretting about it they're not going to be. it looks like there will be no let up in work. has just been dispatched for a week with more than a dozen colleagues to dig the epicenter of south korea's corona virus outbreak. and frank spears who filed that report joins us now from seoul frank 1st of all how bad is the corona virus outbreak in south korea well today the total
7:13 am
was nearing $8000.00 cases here in south korea but what's changed over the last 2 days is an outbreak here in the capital which has remained largely isolated from that the big part of the outbreak down in daegu as i mentioned just 93 new cases were announced just in the last day that brings the total here in the south korean capital to $150.00 that took place at a call center at a subway junction where 2 subways lines intersect and so there are concerns that cluster a new cluster could develop here in the capital is this new spike in reported infections frank a sign that containment efforts are failing. well i'm not sure about that one of the things about this new cluster is that 2 of the people that were working
7:14 am
in that called center that tested positive were members of shin john g. that's the cult at which one so-called patients $31.00 spread the virus to many people and sort of initiated that outbreak in daegu which now includes more than 60 percent of those in south korea it's unclear whether that was to sion john g. members at the call center initiated the outbreak here in seoul so whether or not the containment is succeeding i think we have to compare where we would be if the government wasn't engaged in the intense p.r. campaign to see people wash their hands more wear masks and stay indoors more and refrain from from large public gatherings south korea is a major industrial power in asia what impact is the coronavirus outbreak having on the economy there well i'd like to refer very specifically to to
