this is deja vu news live from berlin the u.s. announces a 30 day van on travel from europe to fight the spread of the coronavirus president donald trump blames the european union for an increase in american covert 19 kids his decision helped send global markets into freefall also on the program. germany ramps up its coronavirus responses cases jumped to over 2000 chancellor angela merkel warns against large gatherings but stopped short of closing schools the warning comes a day after she said some 2 thirds of germans could become infected. unexposed

her welcome to the program the european union has criticized u.s. president donald trump's decision to ban nearly all travel from europe to the united states the 30 day ban affects countries inside europe's schengen passport free travel area and so excludes the u.k. and ireland the european commission said the decision had been taken unilaterally and without consultation president trump accused the e.u. of failing to act quickly enough to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. until now thi u.s. president downplayed the corona virus but in a sudden escalation donald trump has announced near trusting measures to keep new cases from entering our shores we will be suspending all travel from europe to the
12:02 am
united states for the next 30 days the new rules will go into effect friday at midnight. in his address trump called the disease a foreign virus claiming that cases reaching the u.s. was seeded by european travel as. the e.u.'s lashed out at the president's decision but says it's not taking any immediate action in response. the european union. isn't in the habit of shooting from the hip and as you know we believe. good policy making requires reflection it requires internal coordination and therefore we are going to analyze obviously the consequences. and reflect on what the possible next steps need to be. as well as
12:03 am
making political waves the travel ban is a huge blow to holiday makers in europe and to airlines operating routes across the atlantic its 3 european airports into chaos as u.s. citizens scrambled to return harm before the friday night deadline. it's being handled in such a shotgun fashion that nobody knows what's going on and one thing changes from minute to minute we actually just got here 2 days ago and we spoke with. one of the agents downstairs and she said they'd be no more flights after tomorrow so we're trying to get back home to san diego well we were flying. we were not sure if we would be able to get back in something was canceled so i spent $3000.00 for another flight. because more and more countries around the world tyson restrictions and closed their borders people are thinking twice about whether to travel at all in
12:04 am
these uncertain times. and our washington correspondent. is on the story for us at dulles airport outside the american capital aleksandr what have you been hearing from passengers there. well it really depends who you talk to we talked to barbara from germany who told us that he after learning about the travel ban he booked the 1st flight he could get to be able to enter the country before the travel bad is in place in order to see his son who lives here in the u.s. and he also told us of course that he thinks that the travel ban is. exonerated that it's not going to help to prevent the virus from spreading but we also talked to you as citizens to students who told me that to learning about the travel ban they immediately went to the airports to go the next flight because they
12:05 am
were so confused and so concerned that they may be prevented from from entering the country folk from coming back home but they also told me that they think that any measure that aimed at preventing the virus from spreading is right and important. xander as you know trumps ben announcement caused global market chaos and consternation among our allies in europe has any member of his administration spelled out in more detail why he actually took this step. well i think that was president trump's way of showing how he understands he's america 1st polls he was in the oval office today as one of the reporters covering his meeting with the irish prime minister and we asked him why the trouble then why to impose it now and why no to inform to give the europeans they had set up and he told us that europe has hot spots they're really bad he mentioned italy of course
12:06 am
germany and france and he also added that you know he didn't give the europeans had outs because they also don't consult. as he put it when they raise taxes on that very strange explanation and as you mentioned he is facing a lot of criticism because of this trouble then not only in the euro but also here in the u.s. with many experts saying that it's too late that the virus is already here and we have had a number of community spread situations here in the u.s. ok and apart from this travel ban as contested as it may be what other steps is the american government taking to stop the spread of the coronavirus. well the trauma administration has repeatedly said that they are intensifying their efforts to make sure that there are enough mask and enough testing kits available
12:07 am
but we have to say that this is a very huge problem that there are not enough testing kits available for all the people that should be tested and president seems to be focusing more on the economy he is suggesting take a payroll tax cuts and help for the affected economy industries and the white house is now talking to the house democrats whether they will support a package that would require more measured to protect the american people ok did you correspondent alexander phenomenon reporting from dulles airport outside of washington d.c. thanks for that. and it's not just travelers who face disruption the new york stock exchange had its worst day of trading since 987 on thursday the dow jones dropped 9 percent after the opening bell and trading had to be stopped for 15 minutes for the

2nd time this week around the world fears over the pandemic are hammering markets a sell off in the u.s. came out for president trump's travel ban announcement sparked fresh market panic in asia and europe follows days of market drops as investors fear that governments can't contain the. 19 pandemic. and here in germany the coronavirus death toll has risen to 5 chancellor angela merkel met this evening with the country's state premiers to discuss and coordinate further measures to contain the spread of the virus. she told reporters that her government accepted the advice of the country's leading medical experts merkel said that there will be a coordinated effort to ensure medical facilities are properly equipped for the outbreak she also vowed to safeguard the german economy by all means necessary and to shed a little more light on what that all means i'm joined by hands brant our political correspondent by all means necessary. what means might that involve well 1st of all

one has to say that is a legendary saying it's something that hawk speck to mario draghi who was at the time the chief of the european central bank when it was a question of whether to use the euro as a currency would be able to survive and he at the time said he would do whatever it takes to save the euro that was 8 years ago and it did save the euro it made a very important impact on markets at the time so i think that's what merkel is trying to do now by using that same phrase whatever it takes in other words germany is going to make finances available to german companies to the extent that is necessary even if for instance the budget should go into deficit and we have to say that here in germany a balanced budget has been something like a religious belief in recent years so for america to say that that is something that they might not stick to any longer is an indication of how important how serious the situation is for the german government and this meeting was delayed
12:10 am
somewhat and there were rumors about tensions between merkel and the premier's what have you heard is indeed it was a meeting with all the premiers of the various of the 16 german federal states and because there is such a strong federal system in germany these states in fact have to make decisions on things like such as closing schools or a closing universities extending school holidays banning meetings of certain sizes that kind of thing this is not something that the central government by itself can order to be done so there was a lot of bickering apparently about various states saying well in their region a certain measure was not appropriate in other regions that might be appropriate and so on especially on the question of whether or not to close schools but several states have already indicated that within the next couple of days we may fight here announcements on that so schools i think are likely to be closed at least in certain regions and ok we'll be watching out for that. political correspondent
12:11 am
thanks for that insight fit and here in germany there are over 2300 cases of covert 900 chancellor merkel has said over 2 thirds of the country's population could eventually become ill despite the warning the government has faced criticism for being slow to respond to the virus threat here's a closer look at how people in berlin are coping as infections continue to rise no panic here just an orderly line outside one of the coronavirus testing centers in berlin it may only be an itchy throat or other mild symptom but a growing number of people want to get checked there's no big outbreak yet in the german capital but individual cases are becoming more frequent this school is one of several that have closed after a teacher and a people both tested positive for the virus. no one is yet talking of closing berlin's public transport system even though people know packed underground trains may help spread infection in fact the city's legendary coup is on display.
12:12 am
i'm not going to do anything different from usual i'm carrying on with life as normal as far as possible. and you for me it hasn't made much difference nonetheless in an effort to protect bus drivers passengers could no longer buy a ticket on bought but people we spoke to seemed relaxed about such precautions. i don't think it makes any difference if i get my take it in the bus or from a machine the danger of infection is still there people who are sick and not being taken out. meanwhile the government continues to adjust its response to the changing situation the czech republic has barred travellers from neighboring germany but says it sees no reason to follow suit there are no concrete plans off the federal government to close the border. we think.
12:13 am
at least now this wouldn't be appropriate certainly. it would be able to decrease. ins the spread of. money but on the other hand. it's already i'm sure many already in germany and already in the seat of germany's government parliamentary debates are continuing for the moment but there are calls for non essential committee meetings to be cancelled and after at least one parliamentarian tested positive for the virus the decision has been taken that public visits to the bundestag will be dressed sickly reduced. and for all the latest on a coronavirus ing clue to what to do if you think you might be infected you can visit our website at studio dot com. for
