i'm called aspen thanks for joining us across europe borders are closing and businesses are shutting their doors as people get ready to wait out the virus pandemic at home italy is still the worst hit country in europe but spain is now also preparing to announce tight new restrictions on movement across the nation that's after 1500 new cases were reported in spain between friday and saturday a low madrid has turned into a ghost town instead of the usual traffic jams motorists have an easy drive through the capital the regional government has ordered the closure of bars and retail establishment only pharmacies grocery stores and newsstands can remain open many residents have fled the city to go to the countryside or the coast those still in madrid are trying to get by as best as they can. i'm not so

worried but i'm still thinking about the situation now we have to be brave and stick together. they know mostly it's time to show that we are a civilized country and comply with health regulations. there's gradually everyone is realizing that this virus spreads extremely fast. several regions have already introduced strict measures authorities in catalonia sealed off for communities on thursday after the number of infections suddenly surged now the entire country is set to follow suit. well authorities here in germany have announced a series of measures to minimize damage from the corona virus outbreak including the closure of schools and suspending the country's top flight football league growing numbers of people are stockpiling food and goods as well like disinfectant and toilet paper almost 4000 people have been infected in germany so far and the death toll is now at 8 the government is calling on people to avoid social contacts

to prevent the spread of the virus. william no igloo craft has been following that advice he's reporting today from home william are people where you are taking those suggestions seriously. well i certainly am not because i'm sick not because i'm in quarantine but that is the prevailing public health advice that if you can stay home you should stay home and fortunately we have the technology that we can have the best of both worlds both continuing to work and trying to live our lives as best as possible while staying home and protecting others i was out in my neighborhood earlier today things seem pretty much usual maybe a little quieter than normal but i was out at the weekend farmers market people it was a beautiful day today it was as crowded as ever maybe the only big difference i saw was the free samples were being covered up or not being offered at all like they they usually are so on one hand it's good to see that people aren't panicking they're going about their lives by the other hand people should be taking the

advice and the request seriously that they should stay home and avoid contact with other people and observe social distancing not for us but for those who are more vulnerable the elderly and people with special medical conditions there was one post on instagram that struck me particularly hard as i was going through my research today from jody edinburg she's a canadian living in florida and she's been posting rather sit firstly about keeping in mind the vulnerable people because it is true the majority of people might not have problems if they catch this virus but there are people both young and old old people and also young people with medical conditions who will be in a very serious situation if they catch the corona virus and it's all the more reason to be protecting ourselves and protecting those people from us who may very well be carrying the disease without even knowing it so what about those those added risk groups the elderly people with preexisting health conditions how are

germans chipping in dead to help their neighbors. well although spontaneously it seems that both in real life and on social media people have been reaching out saying hey i'm healthy i'm young i'm available helping out our neighbors you'd see for example the popular notes group notes of berlin that posts usually funny things going around that they see on the city people then posting notes about helping out neighbors in their buildings and in their neighborhoods there's also been a shop in hamburg that deals with 0 waste and sustainable products they put a post on their instagram account saying that they are happy to reach out to people putting together packets and boxes boxes of food for the elderly or people who are otherwise can't get out of their house or shouldn't be leaving their homes and people have been responding i spoke to the woman who's running that homburg shop and she said that their response online and their neighbors have been out have been

tremendous that people are willing to pitch pitch in people who maybe have a bicycle and can carry extra things to to those in need so the outpouring of support really has been quite incredible all around germany. in small ways and big ways both online and like i say and offline i would certainly be good to see their william know a glue crawford porting from berlin for us thank you very much. are joining me now in studio a lemo talkie from sports to look at how this pandemic is affecting the sports world sort of here in germany the blueness league of finally deciding to suspend the season but it took them a while to make that choice right to i think the german league i think for the long time they were just hoping that hey as long as no players effect that no coach is affected then no harm you know they don't have the crown are as we can continue playing and unfortunately our assistant work that way and we also and then of course they will release key keen on this idea of guy stuff you know which is

always a chance that is the literal translation of it goes caves and that's because you have stadiums without any spectators and it does feel kind of eerie a bit creepy even at times and then what happened was that information emerged yes yesterday before friday's when is it again that perhaps one of the coaches paddleboard skull was showing kroner like symptoms and that's when when you see a panic and they decided to cancel off cancel the games but at the same time people also need to understand that what made that the coronavirus has really turned the football would upside down really on its head because in order to plan next season you really have to sort out this season's over things like relegation promotion the european places so it's a real struggle for football right now dealing with this i mean given the struggle how war players reacting how are fans reacting to this decision that's actually one really nice positive it's very refreshing a lot of the

a lot of the. team to be really accepting of it they understand that football isn't everything that it can be put on on the back burner and that right now the number one priority is people's well being and it's about containing this quote of iris well a lot of speculation as well about the fate of this year's summer olympics in japan here's what the japanese prime minister had to say on the topic earlier today. well the more i want you to look at it we will continue to closely corporate with i.o.c. and of course i.o.c. is working closely with w h s for us we would like to overcome the spread of the infection i'm told the olympics as planned and i start. yes so for now the olympics going ahead as planned accordingly but i mean so many major events announcing either cancellations or postponements really the olympics is starting to look like an outlier here it is
5:09 pm
and i can't help but shake my head at what he just said i mean it seems to me that he's in a state of the japanese government is almost in a state of denial and there's also an element of wishful thinking and i get it from their perspective obviously the government billions of dollars into these games and if they use them if they can't so then they will be in the minus but at the same time it's a huge risk hosting these games lead allowing them because you are putting lives at risk you are asking you are asking hundreds and thousands of hands and athletes to come to japan literally around the world yes yeah and that's how disease spreads that's how it is spread just like exactly what the cronut are so i don't think it's really a smart idea to put people's lives at risk and they are right now also a lot of options ideas emerging and everything and one of them is for example just like we had with football is that let's hold these events that's have these olympics but behind closed doors but of course we also learn from the n.b.a.
5:10 pm
and from football that athletes are not immune to the iris and i was working exactly everybody and then of course the one idea that the talk you organize a seem to be very open to right now is perhaps press pointing it but i would not rule out a cancellation because it has happened before. during world war 2 of course rival these a game scheduled to start in late july at least for now will email the jockey did his sports thank you. well the corona virus appears to be retreating in china that's where it emerged late last year the government says there were only get this 11 new cases on saturday and that for the time most of them were actually imported from overseas the success of its quarantine program is already being touted in state propaganda. the israel full scenes in china this week infection rates are decreasing on friday the country proudly announced on the 8 new cases. who hand city reported 5 new cases before the eyes of the nation the city
