for potential quarantine. i'm married to evanston thanks for joining us large parts of western europe are going into lockdown in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus we begin in france where within a few hours shops restaurants and entertainment venues will be shut down that's in addition to the closure of tourist sites that was already implemented as part of nationwide emergency measures the country's prime minister is calling the coronavirus the biggest health crisis in this century shorties in france a 91 people have now died from corona virus and almost 4 and a half 1000 have been infected. for the latest from the french capital we're joined

now by lisa lewis who's standing by in paris now lisa were people in france expecting this nationwide lockdown. i think many people were indeed expecting this they knew that the situation was quite serious that more and more people got infected and the government had sat in the past and is still saying that we haven't reached the peak of the epidemic yet now france is at its so-called stage 3 and that means the virus is present all across the country . all right so authorities deciding to impose these restrictions now that coronavirus is in all parts of the countries but how are people reacting to these measures are they supportive of the move of the government has made now i think many people understand that the government needed to do that given that the situation as i said is quite serious obviously
10:03 pm
a business people are very worried that they will survive this crisis these few weeks or maybe even months ahead without any income the government has said in the past that they would support financially a different business but we are in france and everything that has to do with the government will be very complicated to apply for so many business obviously very. very of you know how to get access to such money and people in the streets in the past few days at least i've been seeing lots of people in the bars in the restaurants and i think for now they haven't really taken this very seriously and that's also why the government has announced that they would impose more may just close the basque those restaurants because people just still keeping they still kept going there really. and have authorities said how they intend to enforce these measures i mean you say that up to now people don't seem to
10:04 pm
have been taken taking these these restrictions seriously do you think that's going to change now or how will it be in forest. well normally you know it's up to the businesses to close and that's something that they have to do and if they don't do it then they will probably risk fines the government hasn't really gone into detail but i think when it comes to the businesses it's not going to be that complicated because they know that they risk sanctions if they don't follow these measures however there are other measures that have been put in place for example the government has said in the past that gatherings of more than 100 people will be limited now is that really going to be followed through with i don't know because of obviously the government won't be able to control every single person in this country but i suppose that people will now have understood that the government is really serious about this and that they really want to stop the spread and really kind of luck down any social contact here in the country. lisa

10:06 pm
many residents have fled the city to go to the countryside or the coast those still in madrid are trying to get by as best as they can. i'm not so worried but i'm still thinking about the situation now we have to be brave and stick together for the film in most cases time to show that we are a civilized country and comply with health regulations the most conservative going see and this gradually everyone is realizing that this mara spreads extremely fast . year several regions have already introduced strict measures authorities in catalonia sealed off for communities on thursday after the number of infections suddenly surged now the entire country is set to follow suit. all right let's get you up to speed now on the latest coronavirus developments elsewhere u.s. president donald trump says a coronavirus travel ban placed on $26.00 european countries will now be expanded

10:09 pm
some german supermarkets are seeing panic buying many images of empty store shelves are circulating on the internet suggesting a crisis that doesn't really exist and the shelves today are usually fully restocked by the next morning the government says there's no reason for panic buying national keep there are enough supplies and shelves to be restocked but it's quite a challenge to install a sold out one way to solve this problem would be to ease regulations regarding working on sundays on talked about. supermarkets are also urging customers to show more solidarity and imposing quantity limits on certain items like flour and toilet paper tourist attractions like north shore on stun castle are closed the same goes for theaters and museums several cities have introduced strict preventive measures such as limiting events to no more than 50 people and requiring the closure of night clubs and bars. the berlin zoo was busy on saturday just like any

10:11 pm
a sport by the way i sometimes think about people the whole thing just drives me insane it sounds like the kind of thing that would happen to liverpool every year this is the year every year this is the year this is the year. i'm not ok for more on how people's behavior is being at impacted by coronavirus let's bring in sociologist alexander yandell from livestock university hello to you dr yandell so are there typical ways in which people respond to health crises like the one we're seeing now. well luckily we can see that most people act very very very rational and they agree to. come. to very unpleasant rules and the german population for instance is very well just and also excellent site. on its.
10:12 pm
own on the other hand there is of course a man i want to tee off people who do not always behave in solidarity i went shopping today for instance and i saw that there is toilet paper is missing what i read in the newspapers actually really true and also in some of the past or whatever was i can find that in one of the supermarkets and there's also people who steal it as an actor but luckily that's a minority and so there are some people who act panicky and answers and sometimes even egoistical and that's of course also people a minority of people who deny the dangers of. virus and both groups try to come a socio psychological point of view try to control or take control control over something which is not easy to control because it's not easy to control something
10:13 pm
like a virus and how we react on this crisis has a lot to do with how we were brought up for instance in which environment if we were we brought up an environment of safety for instance and our families or did we have dysfunctional families where there was a lot of mistrust and desire so such a crisis can have a negative effect on those who are a. doctor and if i could just jump in there for a moment i'm just interested to know in with all of this can we learn something from the current crisis just based on how people have been reacting. yeah we can learn a lot of that and it's of course very sad what's happening. on the other hand there's also it's han's this crisis reminds us of that we have to be besides being very cautious that we have to keep congress the only for
10:14 pm
a week and we should not panic courters but we should not panic we have to listen to scientific experts and don't believe in stupid conspiracy theories and also what we can learn now is that we are. how watch how that people. behave in solidarity and not behaving in an interesting we can learn quite a lot of that and it was so i think with us now now now it shows us new ways for instance of how we are working the necessity is the mother of invention song it will change all of us. kate says the ologist dr alexander handel we thank you very much and before it will quick reminder of our top story. spain and france have followed italy in ordering and nationwide shutdown of public life as
