this is d w news live from berlin germany starts to last down to find the coronavirus today's day one of a near total shutdown of public life in 2 german states with out there is likely to follow polls here how authorities in bavaria are trying to keep president on the street also coming down as this slowly gets a handle on the crisis china has
7:01 pm
a need and advice to offer a world putting millions of people on lockdown. for sure again brown. where and celebrating the life of a country music legend candy rogers has died at the age of 81. i married to evanston it's good to have you with us germany is considering tougher measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus so far the federal government has held back on introducing a nationwide lockdown but several of germany's 16 states have already been tightening restrictions on public life 2 of them sorry london the west and bavaria and the south have ordered people to stay home but various public ban came into effect early on saturday. there was an eerie calm in munich on saturday morning
7:02 pm
as the bavarian capital went into day one of its public health lockdown there were few people out on the streets restaurants bars and cafes were closed and people told to stay home there was similar scenes all over the state with public sentiment generally behind the measures. i wouldn't fit into the article i think confinement is a good idea it's also necessary because we have to protect each other and this is the only way we can do it. today you can almost all media young people have to take care of the older one so that nobody behaves in a dangerous way but you see here that we keeping our distance there's nothing else you can do. but very and police say they've seen only a few violations of the lockdown so far group gatherings are banned but residents are allowed to go to work do essential shopping visit the doctor or do exercise.
7:03 pm
turkey it's called i'm doing some shopping now fortunately i have a garden i also do a lot of cycling to be with you but i do it alone. but there is move has sparked a wider debate in germany on whether there should be a nationwide lockdown. well for more on the situation in bavaria and heartache joins us now from the city of munich haloti of boston so it's the 1st day of a 2 week a lockdown in bavaria tell us what the situation is like right now and how are people responding to the new restrictions. those don't really quiet all day today mariano's not a lot of people outside also as you can see maybe it's pretty cold and grizzly outside it's raining so there's a lot of reason for people to god side everything is closed as we heard in the
7:04 pm
report so overall i would say that people they are understanding of this and they are accepting of this because they do understand that this is the only thing right now the only possibility to slow the spread of this virus and there were some people out today of course taking walks or or are going grocery shopping you're still allowed to do that it's also it's a saturday so no one or a lot of people don't really have to go to work. i do have the feeling that people are understanding of this because over the last few days especially when the weather was really nice and warm there were a lot of people outside especially in the parks and along the river and so the population did see that these appeals for people to stay at home weren't really working and that's why the government put in place these more drastic measures and i think it's not only sinking in and people are more disciplined now than they were just a few days ago i think especially if you go to supermarkets for example everyone's
7:05 pm
keep their distance so at the moment this is working well and people are not only accepting they're also welcoming this area and i found hardiker morning for us from munich thank you so much for the update. well here in the capital berlin authorities have so far taken a less stringent approach to restricting access to public spaces to slow the spread of coronavirus while nonessential shops and palms and playgrounds have been shut parks have remained open but today were much less popular in a mostly sunny day here the german capital officials have threatened a much wider crackdown should too many people flout the advice to stay mostly indoors. for more on this let's bring in d.w. political correspondent nina has a hello to you nina so listen even though berlin is in germany is the largest city we haven't seen a lockdown here yet why is that because it is so densely populated
7:06 pm
because the vast majority of berlin was don't own a house with a garden they live in small flats and so it's not so easy to impose measures like the ones taken in the state of the various for example where people can still go outdoors so here experts are warning that confining people to their homes could lead potentially to a rise in domestic violence in child abuse it cetera having said that that varia and other states have implemented drastic measures this could also trigger a chain reaction right so we have heard from the german government that it will be monitoring people's behavior today to determine whether or stricter measures should be imposed nationwide so you know what are authorities looking at exactly. well many people on wednesday evening when chancellor angela merkel addressed the germans in her red t.v.
7:07 pm
address many people had the feeling that this was sort of the last warning shot to . germans to stay at home to practice social distancing and not meet in public anymore and then on friday this feeling was reinforced when her chief of staff actually addressed journalist and said ok we'll have to look at how people behave on saturday to see whether more stringent measures are necessary because people may still meet in public and the state premiers of the 16 states will talk together in the telephone conference on sunday and we'll know more then. well nina corona virus is of course not only a health make it's also taking a major toll on economies around the world and here in germany the finance minister has now said the government is preparing a supplementary budget of 150000000000 euros is this going to be enough to help but it's a pretty drastic step there supplementary budget will probably be passed by the
7:08 pm
government on monday it will consist of for example some 50000000000 euros in aid for self-employed people and smaller companies and then there's also an additional rescue package that's worth another $600000000000.00 euros with loans in guarantees by the german government the economy economy and finance ministers have said that all the weapons will be put on the table to help keep the german economy afloat and now they're trying to prove that they're really putting their money where their mouth is already w. political correspondent neither thank you so very much. well the impact of the corona virus pandemic is intensifying worldwide italy has now reported at the biggest ever one day rise in deaths due to the virus nearly 800 people have died since friday and authorities have recorded close to 54000 infections well meanwhile guatemala has ordered an 8 day curfew from sunday the
7:09 pm
central american nation has so far reported in just 17 cases vietnam has barred nearly all foreigners from entering the country and shut down inbound international air travel and switzerland has reported a 25 percent jump in corona virus cases in a single day with infections there at just over 6000. and now a bit of positive news china has reported 0 locally transmitted cases for the 3rd straight day of already say all 41 of the new confirmed cases were brought in from overseas after weeks of fighting the disease with tough measures china is now sharing its experience with the rest of the world and providing much needed supplies. from being at the receiving end of coronavirus aid from other nations to helping the rest of the world's battle the disease china has its domestic outbreak largely under control and is now supplying millions of mosques and other
7:10 pm
badly needed items to struggling governments around the globe beijing hopes the aid will help build political ties and diffuse criticism that's it was too slow in tackling the outbreak. for people in china life has slowly been returning to something approaching normality many restaurants and shops are still carrying out temperature checks on custom as. in the capital beijing shoppers voiced confidence in government measures to reduce imported cases by isolating a rifle's from abroad. there's just so was so many people here i don't feel so worried because right now this is standard approach to korean teaming the imported cases of corona virus and those who have come back from abroad so i'm not that boring 8 we sat through a. few more everyone is being very vigilant about those returning from
7:11 pm
overseas we absolutely must not let talk god down we can't allow rebound increased numbers and so put to waste the achievements we've made and the battles with one from the visual. as the pandemic engulfs the rest of the world's scenes like this for a glimpse of how life can recover from the crisis. well now for a story here in germany that does not involve the coronavirus media sources here say that members of the most radical wing of the far right a.f.d. alternative for germany party have agreed to dissolve their faction this comes after a power struggle between the parties radical branch and its national leadership the split was accelerated after germany's don't mystic intelligence service classify the faction as extremist and put it under formal state surveillance.
7:12 pm
well for more let's bring in the political correspondent in manoa chess so why not tell us a bit more about this faction and why it was significant. well dispassion is you say this extreme and nationalist group within the far right party of the a few d.s.d. and the right wing party idea of do which is a 1st opposition party to the governing coalition indulge among polymath cons around 777-7000 members across germany and the decision hostin and take and according to reports over 2 days of this year which was founded by one of the most prominent i think is our john hope who is also the leader of the of the in the state of the rings. what was it this decision to dissolve the faction voluntary. well not quite on the one hand you mentioned it these group has been placed under civilians by the germans the mystic intelligence agency last week and
7:13 pm
also on the other hand yesterday on friday a group. of a group of leaders of the a.v. including maraton including alice. gathered in delhi and they discussed future action and they decided it was a vast majority that disco hard into this thirty's of they have to dissolve so it wasn't a voluntary was a decision that has been taken. and this is something that the main party federal party in goes to its most extreme this week. all right so if this faction is being dissolved what kind of an impact is this going to have on germany's far right movement overall. well what's important to see there is that it shows that the far right party in all of the it was believed to be brought to power as suspicions
7:14 pm
a suspicion as well as its most extremist when so it shows they were intending to dissensions between man burns it's also shows a change of tactics because ultimately it is these groups within the party had been sheltered had these protected and here and now and now we see dead they're all they're all solidarity kind of dissolved as well as demands as well as the other group within the party itself to members of the party the most armenians to give such as by those such as his own star such as. decided it was best of all to party to dissolve these extremists branch to the youth in mind as the men are thank you very much indeed. and finally country music fans are mourning the death of legendary singer kenny rogers he died friday of natural causes at the age of 81 the grammy award winning singer songwriter racked
