tomorrow symptoms over the corona virus that's to say a temperature and a persistent cough and on the advice of the chief medical officer i've taken a test that has come out positive so i am working from home i'm so far isolated. let's go straight to d.w. correspondent arrogant mass who is standing by in london barrett what does this mean for johnson's ability to govern in this very critical time for the country well boris johnson assad himself and his message that he is continuing to lead to fight against the coronavirus so he will stay on top of things is what he's saying right now if he should to do that and we know that the foreign secretary dominic robb is stepping in so he would be the 2nd in command to then lead the country but as of yet we're not there yet boris johnson he was seen in the house of commons as recently as wednesday farragut are there concerns that other members of staff and m

p's that they might also have been exposed here. several m.p.'s had just already 2 weeks ago said that they probably shouldn't be all coming together in the house of commons it's quite an hour chamber and people are usually sitting there quite close to each other so m.p.'s had expressed the worry that they would basically be like a giant petri dish and then they could all go out into the respective constituencies all over the country and possibly spreading the virus however just recently last week this week people have been spacing out so the house of commons was much quieter than usual and for example the prime minister's questions on wednesday there were just a few and piece in the chambers normally it's packed so that has already been a shift in their behavior of the m.p.'s johnson of course not the only high profile case there in the u.k. prince charles has also tested positive for the coronavirus pirg it is it possible

that the virus is more widespread in the u.k. than people recognize it's very very likely sarah the official numbers just over 11000 confirmed cases thought i think a lot of people i know already know somebody who is infected say the fear is that the virus is very widespread here in the u.k. much much higher than the official figures and especially in london we also know that hospitals are already coming close to being overstressed and we haven't seen the people of the virus just yet so even though the weather at the moment is very sunny and i think on the staff is the mood at these for many londoners is easy is quite jolly but i think underneath a lot of people would frankly be quite scared farragut mass in london thank you barrett. here are some more of the latest developments in the corona virus pandemic 3 months into the outbreak and the total

in this virus using every financial scientific medical pharmaceutical and military resource to halt its spread and protect our citizens i know that we will achieve victory and quickly return to the path of exceptional health safety and pres parity for all of our citizens other emergency measures include this 1000 bed us navy hospital ship due to arrive in new york harbor on monday to ease the pressure on the city's own hospitals. normally packed times square is now eerily deserted with no tourists in town and do your because he didn't government ban on working and socializing in public. a city already. knows that the worst is still to come. and is that difficult situation not only on the health front but also economically correspondent oliver salat is in washington and earlier we asked him about the $2.00 trillion dollars rescue package due to be

voted on by the house of representatives later it's a again an unprecedented some money that is urgently needed and as you say it's mostly needed as a kind of emergency relief so to compensate 5 people and businesses that are suffering from the situation right now from the lockdowns across many economic centers in the united states but if you look at the health system that puts a killer in the epicenter in new york that many health workers there described as catastrophic were fritz trucks are used right now to store the bodies of the sees patients in the hospitals well that money of course is necessary and would help but only if the necessary material is available and new york's governor andrew cuomo desperately is calling for 40020 leaders for instance he's also stressing that the health care system is running out of supplies very soon so money is certainly not
2:09 pm
the only problem here it's also the fact that the material is not available in the market. that was all over salad in washington meantime the presidents of the u.s. and china have appeared to resolve their feud over which of their countries started the coronavirus pandemic after president trump talked about the chinese virus china's foreign ministry suggested that it had been brought to china by the u.s. military now presidents trump and she have spoken on the phone and agreed to work together to fight the pandemic. we also have some news just in hong kong's government has banned public gatherings of more than 4 people because of the corona virus the chinese territories teenagers are having to study for their graduation exams with their schools closed the exams have now been postponed until the end of april so the students have a bit more time to get up to speed but most of them are having to attend classes online and there are doubts about whether that is good enough. the 1st one the. see

a good chance for them to stay home. and do the stuff that the period before them watching those students i do afraid. their performance if you don't push them over the thought maybe i do worry about ok for the resolve that may not be that good these high school seniors say they're trying their best to keep motivated even the most important exams in their lives to far but even before the outbreak students here were already facing one of the most challenging lines in memory although their final year has been under the shadow of months of pro-democracy protests with many young people finding themselves on the front lines of the needn't and that alone was already taking its toll i think this difficult time for us because we keep this trip out of crude has and somehow we heard about our west there by the polies so if i had to concentrate too so we do not have ropey parish which suffered but you know here comes a protestant here today sorry dan so many things are stuck in the us these students

by d.w. africa correspondent krishna standing by in cape town so i jan what was it like there on day one of the lockdown. so i have never seen capes on like this you can see it behind me the streets are almost empty although i'm in the city center on long street which is unusually one of the busiest streets and so on you know but it seems most people are following the order of the government and the president which you can read right behind me on this house stay home this is an order for the next 3 weeks for them you have said that the rules here are quite strict you cannot just go out and have a walk or go for jogging this is all a bit and you can only go to the supermarkets and to the hospitals and to follow up on essential services this is it and at least in the city center here you can see most people are following it and just come from one of the townships of the crowded poor areas of cape town it's a bit more difficult because it's a very crowded space many people are still going out and it seems things are not enforced as strict as many people believe they would be and how is south africa's

health care infrastructure coping as well. see the reason why presidents who are. now at this lockdown is because he thought that if it continues like this the numbers of cases continue to increase then the whole system might collapse already now there's only a few very good private clinics that hardly anybody who can afford to visit the majority of the hospitals are state run 80 percent of the mainly poor population depends on the state's health infrastructure and it's already now overwhelmed so this is going to be a mess of problems for the country of the numbers don't go down and might also be a massive problem economically as you're on south africa already in a recession with an unemployment rate of 29 percent what is being done to lessen the economic impact of the crisis. on the state says it will invest a lot of money to support businesses but the question is will that be enough it's going to be very difficult south africa has one of the most unequal societies in the world jurists from all over the world are not here anymore

a lot of businesses already had to close down so it's very very tough times that. jan creation cape town thank you it's. it's and uganda has confirmed its 1st case of corona virus last saturday and since then the number of infections has risen to 14 the president has announced measures to contain the spread of the virus including close excuse and businesses and a ban on public transport the restrictions have left many ugandans frustrated and facing economic uncertainty debbie reports from the capital kampala. park is one of compilers busiest sports one ordinary day hundreds of thousands of people come here to board maybe buses but this is all we looks to do and no public transportation no bus and just uganda's president has ordered the police and the military to enforce his directive to bun public transportation in the interest

alternative source of income but health experts say that to contain this creed of the virus everyone must observe social distancing and so far there's no better way to do that than to stay at home. while egyptian authorities have expelled a british journalist following critical reporting of the country's handling of the coronavirus crisis with michael sam has worked from egypt since 2014 and often reports for us here at t w authorities revoked her press accreditation after she reported on a study suggesting each of probably. had many more coronavirus cases than officially confirmed they accused her of bad faith reporting and said that she had been promoting incorrect data. and they are joined now by ruth michael send who is back in britain her home country welcome to the program or if so describe for us what you've been through in the last few days. it's really over the past week so

initially what happened was that the as you mentioned the egyptian authorities revoked my press card. and then they began the process old. calling me to meet with the security services who run the diesel authority and it was understood by by the german embassy i'm also a german citizen that they that this put me at risk of arrest and we understood that there was the risk of them revoking my visa arresting me deporting me some version. of those events but the message was then passed to the british embassy that they they wanted me out of the country one way or another and the german the german embassy then arranged a flight for me to be able to leave so the egyptian authorities and for their part they have accused you of speculation so what is your response to that and why do
2:19 pm
you think that the number of coronavirus cases is actually higher than those official counts that they're putting forward. i mean i think firstly it's important to say that the objection that they raised was that i cited a piece of scientific research in my reporting so this is an epidemiological study conducted by scientists at the university of toronto it was published in the lancet just last night and this model's the likely size of the outbreak in egypt at the very beginning of march when egypt just had 3 cases officially and it's based on the fact that there was obviously a disparity between the number of official cases in egypt hand and the number of foreign nationals who were leaving the country and testing positive for the corona virus. on return home and so there was obviously a disparity in those numbers simply due to lack of testing we heard from the world

health organization at a press conference last week that as of last week egypt had just tested 3015 people egypt is a country of 100000000 people. and so this issue of not having tested enough people to have a clear sign clear idea excuse me of the size of the outbreak is not a problem that's exclusive to egypt but egypt in their response to this reporting has politicized that problem and it's made it a president reagan issue when it's simply a public health issue but let's talk a little bit more about that response why do you think censorship in egypt is so pervasive at the moment. well we see that censorship in and treatment mistreatment of the local and foreign press has been unfortunately a whole lot of the egyptian regime since i just factor as he came to power in 2013 . but at a particular time like this you know corona virus the spread of this pandemic in

many ways is a national security issue for all countries in the world but it is also something that undermines or can outline the stability of governments and we've seen the authoritarian regimes across the world including egypt have treated information about their handling of this pandemic as as much a national security issue as the virus itself and that they're scared that people's reaction to the virus people's reaction to how the government handles it will undermine the stability. of their of their rule of not certainly something that's happening to the egyptian regime well thank you very much for joining us and sharing your story journalist ruth michael sam we appreciate it. let's get a quick check of some other stories making news around the world european union leaders. are have been holding a summit by video link they have tatts to their finance ministers with working out
