nations a senior health official who has been infected appeared fia video link to praise measures taken so far but with a warning. and his. analysis from last week in certain regions shows that the measures are little by little having the desired effect now it wouldn't make any sense to try new measures very important measures were rolled out on the 15th of march. it's me that is getting that if it does this you know if you miss him i'm not going to look at the but we can institute more measures if the present ones are having an effect this isn't a race to the top. in the west. meanwhile with many medical facilities strained to the breaking point incoming patients are being treated in makeshift hospitals like this one in madrid's convention center which just opened up a new section on monday. as the death toll spikes the leader of

spain's main business association complained about the effect of stay at home orders. if industry cannot stop we have to try to not stop it and if it has to stop it should be for the minimum time possible this is because industry gives strength to the spanish economy that she apparently was not in the industry must be treated with special care because it generates employment and services it is a very important issue. that it clearly is soldiers in hazmat suits have been called up to help disinfect public spaces as the battle against the deadly virus grinds on. in the united states the death toll from the corona virus has now reached 3 and a half 1000 that is more than in china almost a 3rd of those deaths reported in new york city i'll bet is where a field hospital in central park it started taking patients and the tennis center

a war of words president donald trump says that medical equipment already in place should be enough for the city but the mayor and the state governors say they both need more help from the federal government to be ready for what's coming. it is a fundamental blunder. to only prepare for today that's why in some ways we are where we are we've been at behind this virus from day one you have the scientist in the data projections show you a curve the curve goes like this you're over here prepare for the high point of the curve and do it now when you can do it the night before. medics have become the heroines and heroes of the day and monday was even national doctors' day but in new york they've had no chance to celebrate their on the front lines in

a city or the coronavirus death toll is rising rapidly. and for more i'm joined now by dr celine gallagher she's an infectious diseases specialist and co-host of the epidemic podcast on the coronavirus and dr gallagher it's good to have you on the show you work at bellevue hospital tell me what is the situation there right now. so doctors working at bellevue as well as many other hospitals across the new york city area are really short we have a very serious shortage of personal protective equipment so most of us are operating without the appropriate and 95 respirator masks even surgical masks and face masks face shields gallons are in short supply and that means not only can we not protect ourselves appropriately against infection but it means that if we do have patients who are in the hospital the few who remain in the hospital who do not

have code at 19 it puts us at risk for also infecting them with this virus so it's really quite a concerning situation and you know they've been shocking statistics and images coming out of new york one new york resident died every 12 minutes from the coronavirus over the weekend that was according to the city's health department and there is now a field hospital set up in central park what message should these images be sending to the world outside of the united states well i hope people will learn from the mistakes of new york city and for that matter the mistakes of hahn and italy and so on i think unfortunately what we're seeing again and again is until people see this in their own backyard they're not taking the appropriate measures they're not being aggressive enough and i think that's really unfortunate because too many people are going to die as
8:08 pm
a result of that and we know we're going to go there or there are lots of specialist well trained specialists in the united states you're one of them you worked in west africa during the boat with crisis are there any lessons from there or useful to you today. well i think to me what's what is most analogous are the conspiracy theories the idea at the time that ebola was a hoax we heard similar things here in the united states that corona virus was a hoax you know and there was a lot of messaging done to convince people that this was real this was something that they had to take seriously and unfortunately both cases these were epidemics pandemics that were unfolding in the midst of presidential campaigns and so the messaging very much got politicized you know and i just have to say i think we really need to focus on the science and do what makes sense from a public health perspective and so that means the messaging needs to come from
8:09 pm
scientists not politicians we are using the it has been politicized in the united states so we have the daily press briefing from the white house now what's your opinion on behalf well i guess i think those need to be led by the scientists who are really spearheading the response i think the problem is when you have politicians that are doing the messaging people will decide whether they believe the message or not based on whether they like the politician or not and so even if what they're saying is true it really muddies the message so whether it's dr tony foushee dr devore parks you know one of those leading scientists should be really the ones who are doing the messaging not politicians really on either side of the aisle doctors celine dion are joining us tonight from new york we listen to your point. as often as we can talk together it's an excellent piece of work thank you i pleasure thank you. our list take

be extended because of the pandemic however games may still be played behind closed doors when the season resumes there are 9 rounds of matches left in the current. league. and joining us now is lots of fun enjoy deal of these sporting director of bonus league aside for tuna dusseldorf loops is good to have you on the program the german football league the d.f.l. wants to finish this season in full do you think that is a wise decision yeah i think it's an important decision i would believe it's a wise decision as long as we can guarantee to deceive deals to players that now it's always must be the most important. let's aid in good state and we can we can play games behind closed doors and i think it's a good thing for
8:12 pm
a football club school's a full economical site to try and finish the season and what about for the country and the fans what if the pandemic is still raging across germany across europe what will it look like then to have bonus league football players playing matches while people are dying outside of a virus well i think you have to look at it in a in a bit of a different way i mean it's very dark times no doubt about it but i think. if people are a home they don't have much to do or think it's yeah i believe it can be a special thing as well for them to have actually the ball in this league up back to watch the players and as i mentioned before as long as we have a guarantee reece the taskforce off. the d.f.l. which is there are lots of doctors also from the labor koch institution i believe it's a good thing because it owns reese good for the emotional people we heard the d.f.l. chief executive say that some clubs could have their existence threatened by this
8:13 pm
suspension is that true for dusseldorf. well i think our case is slightly different i mean you know we are a smaller club has a smaller budget our finances are healthy but obviously being on a rich club these huge budgets smaller builds but overall of course if you don't play football for a long time as long as there are the non-game time goes on as more as monday fickle get it for all the clubs in the 1st as well as in the 2nd division and for now i think i think we will be ok but every club has his own measurements by. not getting the full salary and things like that you have different measurements to actually try and save some money like yeah of course it's a it's a difficult time for every club in the leak are you concerned if the season is finished behind closed doors on health how can clubs guarantee the safety of their players. yeah that was one of the topics today i mean if there is
8:14 pm
a danger then i'm 100 percent convinced there will be no games so right now today when he spoke youngs i thought it was clearly set that there will be a task force. very well known specialists who really look into the dangers and look into the goods of it how it can be done so there is no danger for the players but also for the people who will still work in a stadium like broke crosses and stuff like that one of the measurements is to keep the numbers of people in and around the stadium as small as possible and we have a clear plan of measurements a clear plan of action and i think if all that will be done in a proper way we have a realistic chance to actually start the season early may and finish it by the end of june arrives let's punish deals sporting director of fortuna those that are joining us tonight i think from inside his car this is a dedicated man thank you that's unclear. you're
